here we got jamie foxx i don't want to grow up hey that's good i am a toys r us kid we got chris martin from coldplay i feel like he's gonna be bad at it hey no [Music] welcome back to another daily video my name is joel from room official and there is zero calories in this video you will not gain any weight from watching this video today we're looking at singers improvising on the spot there's a lot of singers that can sing really well but i do think that improvisation is something that can set really good singers apart just elevate them to another level let's get started here we got mariah carey improvising bam just play any old thing because you know you can just play [Music] is she improvising at christmas time is it beating like christmas time [Applause] she sounds great here i don't know from what here this is but this is mariah carey killing it i hope this is recent she had such a long time with just sounding that's great but this sounds over the great today is a new day sorry but if you're improvising and you're like today is a new day that's like saying the sky is blue okay here she shuts down an eager backup singer [Music] baby oh yeah someone's singing on top of her there that's weird makes me wonder if the label had told him like yeah mariah might not sound that great today so we want you to dub her just you know support her and then she turns around like stop it you can say what you want about divas and you know performance with big egos but they're fun to follow they do stuff they're just like whoa did he really do that oh here we go brendon you're improvising this i am into let's have a listen give me a key in g okay we're going for g so hard the lyrics is making up are interesting is this typical like yeah it's hard to be you when everything goes wrong improvised lyrics often say something about the mentality of someone writing it and this sounds like one of those songs where you're supporting someone who's going through a tough time or like want to give a teenage girl some cheering up and like yeah it's gonna get better type thing that's what it's improvising which i think is probably pretty accurate with a lot of brendan's mentality i don't know that much about brendon but having seen his fan base i think it's something that a lot of them need to hear it's very little of brendan's signature belting here it's a little bit uh i don't know how much he practices his belty parts the thing about brendan's belting like his high notes and stuff i think it would be hard to just belt something out of the blue the way brendan does it because he sings in a very peculiar way up top there's so much power going on so if it's just a little bit wrong where the lyrics don't work with that type of belting he's gonna be in trouble so that might be one reason why he might go for this softer vibe next i got ariana grande okay [Music] [Applause] am i saying about what's happening right now shooting my campaign i like ariana but this type of like singing what's happening thing is one of the things that makes me cringe the most in the world it reminds me of that one tick tock with a girl ordering starbucks by singing can i get a guava white eliminate with life i don't think that singing should be a spontaneous part of real life not even ariana can pull that off for me let me know in the comments if you think differently by the way guys i'm saving up to buy rednecks so please get the merch we got this merch get this merch we got this merch they're all good merch and they deserve a loving home your home next up we've got ella fitzgerald the classic jazz singer many of you guys might not know who she is so let's just have a quick gander on wikipedia ella jane fitzgerald was an american jazz singer sometimes referred to as the first lady of song queen of jazz and lady ella she was noted for a purity of tone impeccable dictation phrasing timing intonation and horn-like improvisational ability particularly in her scat scene that might be what we get to see today she definitely specialized in improvisation she will probably out improvise most pop singers in that regard she's probably gonna be more like a jazz instrument here let's have a listen to it [Music] [Laughter] this is so impressive it might not be something you would put on in your car but when you see it like this it's amazing and really really impressive this actually kind of sounds like something you could have in the background of a comedy sketch or something with someone's being chased or whatever the thing about this as well is that there's a lot of scales and stuff you have to study if you want to be a good jazz improvisationalist instead of an improviser i guess and she would definitely have to do that for this as well so there's so much theory and stuff you would have to figure out in order to do this because singers have a tendency to not really care about theory that much that was awesome really really cool next up we have john mayer one of my favorite artists of all time but he doesn't strike me as someone who might be the best at vocal improvisation even though he is great at improvisation on his guitar so who knows you could sit here all day [Music] you can go okay maybe that's something but if you don't go sunlight's beating on the corners of the walls and i'm a mr know it all having calls get yourself right get yourself right now if you're not if you're not ouija boarding immediately you don't you're wasting time that is an interesting way to write music ouija boarding that makes sense actually just make up random stuff we're gonna work it out get on get on get on and just stare at the corner of the wall stare at the corner of the wall try to get it going on but i can't you just keep going till you get something and maybe i'm a little bit shy maybe someday i'll tell you why i'm mainly a fan of john mayer's really early stuff where he had a lot more interesting things going on harmonically and the melodies felt more thought through i can't imagine this is how he writes music nowadays but i felt like there was more thinking behind it when he was writing on his early albums like room for squares and heavier things amazing albums that's just me though i know he's been more successful with his more recent stuff than he was with those first two albums because i don't know it's all stuff but you gotta keep forcing it forcing it forcing it go get it from the universe hey god the radio guide the sound effect that's cringe bro his mind is blown oh that's why did the blow sound effective that just makes it more cringe come on man everybody's listening to thoughts coming out of my mind but i won't be scared cause i do it for a living it's not a taking it's a given tell me why do you still want to hear me sing it's definitely impressive and it's not something that i could do i think but it sounds pretty generic i often like to start on the other end with songwriting and be like oh what is the interesting thing going to be here like a lyrical hook when i wrote living for that i was like oh i want to have living for that in the lyric and then i kind of worked around that you may argue whether that is the best song in the universe but i find it a more interesting way to write next up we have christina aguilera let's have a listen [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] yes that was more of an improvised vocal run she's a great great singer something that's interesting about fast vocal runs and stuff is that people often learn them in big blocks so it's like oh i have this phrase that i do and then that's a building block and then they can kind of transition from that into another phrase that they do because no one has the brain power to be like yeah that note and then that note and then that note when you're going like a hundred notes per second so if you at home want to learn how to do vocal runs or whatever you should probably start thinking about phrases and how to connect them and practice them a lot here we got bobby mcferrin and joey blake i've forgotten who they are get on wikipedia robert keith mcferrin born march 11 1950 is an american jazz vocalist okay we got another jazz guy i've definitely listened to it i think he might be a little bit more world music and joey blake who that is it does not say you go ahead and start something you always stop i'm start i'm always dying so start something i'mma stop by something [Music] so this is basically improv theater for [Music] music [Music] [Music] [Music] take me [Music] [Music] yes [Music] oh they're so in sync that's though [Applause] [Music] it's only a mic like that now that'll change the overtones and stuff for just overall the harmonic quality of your voice if you might get there compared to here make it a lot more muffled oh dope i guess that's like throat singing [Music] just blowing and doing nuts to make their rhythm with the airflow that's so fun here we got jamie foxx ah it's a phallic [Applause] john legend singing the toys r us jingle to be fair i don't believe for a second that these are improvised it would just be way too much of an unknown to throw someone into something totally improvised in a show like this because they might just be burped i don't wanna grow up hey that's good i am a toys r s kids [Applause] [Music] be a maybe [Music] [Music] i'll give you and he don't ever get excited who's losing oh that is true by john legend [Applause] this fridge that is funny here we go beyonce she can't really sing or dance or anything like that so i don't really think she can improvise [Music] is she singing i'm beyonce she wants them to sing beyonce she's like say beyonce [Music] wow she can pull that off as well but imagine like any nuts like top-tier artists being like hard to think of a good example you know james arthur being like sing james arthur i don't know this is something about it you have to be top level iconic to be able to pull off demanding the people sing your name [Music] [Applause] oh nice wait is this from nowadays or is this this child it would feel weird if she did this now when she's like married to jay-z or whatever [Applause] [Music] even close the curtains what happened in there do you think security comes and grabs the men that's what i think that was dope a little bit different pretty far away from the jazz improvisation but there's also no room for that in pop music i would say we got chris martin from coldplay i feel like he's going to be bad at it i think it's because in this video like beside dance and he was kind of doing bad dancing i feel like he's going to do dad improvisation as well hey kids what are you doing here in the basement we have a load of people on the phone who have got bleak morning stories and then we'd like you to set them to me well i'll try it's four in the morning i wake up and i have to go to work for six so i come into work six o'clock ready to lifeguard and turns out that it's next week that i meant to be working so woke up at four o'clock for nothing that is my sad story oh you're a week early for work yeah gutted absolutely get it that is a bad sad story that is a bad sad story or sad story wasn't good enough let's see if we can workshop that into some sort of song something great at the time when most farmers are still in their pajamas my lung went off to get me up i wasn't shuriken i was thinking about working as i pulled my coffee straight into my coffee cup what is this oh i wasn't going to school i wasn't going somewhere cool i like how he's leaning into it being bad that actually made it a lot better he is a good singer so i could see him like trying to make it nice but it's a lot funny for him to be like uh [Music] or i have dad humor one of those let me know in the comments which one is that's as far as i got that was the best thing ever i mean well i don't know where it came from that is that was extraordinary all right i guess you should be called like [Music] got my life got stuff on i got my little um panzo this is such an awkward setup alright there's something about that dj that makes this all weird then it is him and the joke of it all is i can't swim that was amazing yeah wow that's it that was funny i was actually impressed by that i thought it was funny okay guys you're here for more music commentary videos again for music vs videos and i will see you tomorrow in another daily video it's always fun to see singers improvise and there's so many different styles you can do it i think especially the jazz singers stand out even though i don't really listen to jazz that much anymore by the way guys i don't know if you noticed but i'm in a hotel room check it out paint me like one of your french girls
