hi everybody it's susan from sunrise quilt studio and today i thought i'd give you a review on my singer patchwork sewing machine i've had several questions about it in the comments and various videos on since i've had it since last december you know how i like it and so i thought i'd go ahead and give a review and this is not sponsored singer is not involved in any way shape or form other than this is a singer machine i bought the machine with my own money and they are not sponsoring this video at all so all the opinions are my own okay well here is my singer patchwork i bought this back in december 2019 so it's now september of 2020 and i've been using this exclusively this machine i bought at joann's and i paid it was on sale last december and i paid 199.99 regularly it is a 450 dollar machine so i got a good deal on it and um i just want to show you some of the features what i was looking for is i needed something that would do a blanket stitch and it has the blanket stitch here number 20 has the zig into the towards the right 21 goes towards the left so um you know it has that and then it has these two stitches here which are a little bit different but um kind of give you the same effect i also needed a zigzag and it has several zigzag stitches on there of course it has a total of 99 stitches in it so it's got a lot to choose from and then it has all those buttonhole stitches so if you're into garment sewing and you want buttonhole options you've got them right there this machine also has a needle threader which is really convenient it wasn't something that would have been a deal breaker for me if it didn't have but this one works really well and i'm glad it has it the it comes with 10 different presser feet and there's just a little lever in the back that you push forward and the foot comes off so it's really easy to change the feet this is my quarter inch foot that is on there for most of the time and i like the fact that it is wide in the back and that we have a lot of feed dogs there are five feed dogs on this machine so it feeds your fabric through really smoothly and it doesn't want to pull it to one side the only issue i have with this foot is this cutout here causes me a little a little trouble when i am sewing something with if i have the seams up like you will hear me say over and over again in my stash buster series to put your when you're sewing over something that has a point put your point up so that you can see where the seams cross so you can go just right to the right side of those well you got that seam up and the presser foot is coming along and it just slides right underneath there and it wants to press it down and sew it down so in my videos you will see me stopping and raising the presser foot and then lowering again and what i'm doing is raising it so that will flip back down and then i can go on sewing without turning that seam over that's the only complaint i have about the presser feet is that's just a design feature on this foot that maybe they need to look at and see if they can do something about that so we'll see if anybody from singer is watching maybe they will look into that it has a drop in bobbin and it winds up here at the top the needle position up and down button is right here and it has a stop and start button and what that does is it will just automatically sew for you if you have that turned on and it goes at a kind of a slow speed but it's really good if you've got long lengths of straight stitching that you need to do and you don't have to use a presser foot so it'll just sew it and you can just you hit it when you want to stop so that's a nice feature the base plate here is um one of the features that i wanted my viking had this and i really wanted something that gave me a lot of space and so it has this feature and then it has a measuring guide here it goes up to 13 inches which is and has the centimeters marked on it also so 33 centimeters and i find i use this quite a bit especially when i'm piecing if i'm you know double checking to make sure my cutting was accurate my piecing was accurate then i can just lay my patchwork up against here and make sure that i've got the right size this is the reverse button this is the speed button down here it goes at the slowest speed up here it'll go at the fastest speed and you can just set it wherever you want so you still control the speed with your foot pedal but it'll only allow you to go so fast so if you turn it down here you can't go any faster than what that'll allow you if you need to go faster just slide that up a little bit more and then you can go faster so that's kind of a nice feature there it's a self-lubricating machine so you don't have to oil it which is also nice this is the screwdriver which to me was kind of new um but you know you need that to change your needle which i always just used you know a little short screwdriver on my other machines but you need it to remove the the base plate around your um bobbin areas to get in there and clean you don't need it to change the bobbin to change the bottom and you just slide that back and that pops up and then you can change your bobbin but to get in there and clean what you do need to do because there is lint buildup in here okay and you can see i struggle with this i'm i'm just don't i'm not real graceful with this the thing is you can't you know when you're using it you you kind of need to get your hand in there and it's just there's just not very much space in there so it's just a little difficult and i'm not ambidextrous so um i find out it works better if i use both hands on it and i just have to loosen it enough so that i can just spin those out and then i can lift this out and i can get in there and then i can brush out any lint that collects in there so um you know that's it's a little bit inconvenient but again that's not a deal breaker it's something i can live with so um it doesn't you know some machines will have a magnetic plate that or a plate that kind of snaps in magnetically or it has little clips in there that you use to secure it in this one just kind of drops in and then you screw it back into place so um it's just a different way of making it and i'm sure it's probably you know less expensive to do this so anyway i like this machine i think it has you know a lot of features for the the money and it was you know basically what i was looking for i wasn't looking for anything extravagant i didn't need an embroidery unit and you know i just didn't need a lot of bells and whistles so um you know it does what i wanted to do so it's i'm really happy with it it's been really reliable um i really haven't had any trouble with it the only thing you know if you were looking for something that will do some heavy duty sew some heavy duty fabric this may not be in the machine yo this is made for making patchwork it's not for industrial type sewing it won't do unless i don't think i haven't tried it and i don't intend to try it i'm not going to try leather on it i'm not going to do heavy duty fabrics on it like multiple layers of denim like doing felt seams with denim i'm not going to do that not not the doubled ones up the doubled up ones you know you know i don't know if what i'm talking about is the the seams on the outside scenes of your denim jeans the way those seams are made you know there's a lot of layers right there i don't know that this machine would handle that it's it's not designed to do that for one thing so if that's what you're looking for this might not be the right machine for you so you might want to looking for something else um this plate comes off easy you just have to tug it off and then you have your cutaway here so that you could you know put sleeves of garments in there and sew them real easily with small projects that you know are enclosed and you need to slide them in there and it has a leg here that will fold down so that you can store it and it just slides right back in you just have to line up get the thread out you just have to line up the pins into all of the holes and then there we go and then snap it on and then pull the leg out and there you go it's nice and sturdy so has two spool pens it has a horizontal one which is good for the cross brown wound spools of thread and um like here it's cross wound so there's a crosswind spool and it's got the vertical one for just the straight wound spools of thread and of course you can run two spools at the same time through the needle if you're doing like twin needle sewing or if you're i just like to blend two threads together you can do that anyway i'm very happy with this machine if you were looking at it and you know it has all the features you want i would recommend that you try it out so you know see if they will let you test the machines out i don't know if they do that i didn't ask to do that i just bought the machine and i just you know looked at it really close in the the demo in the the display model in the store and um saw the features that had on it and then i did some research online and saw what it what they could do and of course you know if it didn't work out for me i knew i could return it so um you know i'm really happy with this one i thought i'd go ahead and show you some sewing on this first i'm just going to use a straight stitch and this is set at 2.5 in length and okay this is just two layers of quilting cotton that i'm going through here there's the thread cutter so there is the quality of the stitches that is the front side and there's the back side so figure out how to turn this it's hard for me to see there we go okay so that is that's really good if you want to do stitches i need to change the foot i'm going to use a clear foot here this well it's also got a channel cut out in the back so you know for heavy duty or thick stitches it will allow the foot to go through that easily i'm going to try the blanket stitch i just have to dial in 20 and then you can adjust your stitch width this is how it here's the default here i'll show you this it's pretty big if you can see that so i'm going to dial this down a little bit so i want the stitch length let's go down to two and the stitch width i'm going to go to four and see what that gives us and so there's the difference between the stitches this is the smaller stitch and then there's the default so we got that i want to adjust it so i can see it see what's going on there there we go okay and then here's the back so i'm getting good quality stitches and that's the blanket stitch i like to use let's try 20 7. and when you're changing your stitches you're just hitting the arrows here on the side make sure your needle is up when you do that so that you don't break a needle and just letting the machine do its work and all these settings are set on the default we have this and this machine does have a thread cutter on it i forgot to mention that but it does have a thread cutter so here we go and then here is the back side okay um what else should we try let's try uh let's do 30. i can count there we go and i'm just doing these all in the default but you can adjust the width and the spacing between the designs this is a great key i'll show you this one and there's the greek key design and there's here's the back i went and i stitched over some of the threads here but there's that i'm gonna go ahead and trim these off and let's try something else um let's do something heavy let's do i'm gonna do 40 and this is a scallop satin type stitch so here we go with that that design notice the back so that design it's nice and smooth you see where it's not it's not puckering up the fabric tension is just really good on this machine so we don't have those kinds of problems to worry about um let's do let's do a leaf design it's number 61. and just let the machine do the work i'm just kind of guiding it so it will go straight but barely touching the fabric so here's a cute little leaf design now wouldn't that look nice on a quilt and some applique i think that'd be cute and here's the back and let's try let's do something a little bit more intricate this is let's do 65. nope 64. they're both the same they're just mirror imaged so this one is like a tulip design with a couple of leaves this one's a little bit more intricate okay there is that design front and the back there we go i was afraid it wasn't focusing and it wasn't okay so there's the tulip we have the leaf design this is like a greek key this is a kind of a zigzag this i do this on quilting machine and then we have the blanket stitch here we have the scallop design there so they give you some really nice options for stitches to do and let's do one more let me see something that would look fun um i'm gonna do number seventy three two three okay let's try this one here is this design that's a little bit different design and you look at these and you can figure out how to do them with your quilting machine you know as larger designs i think that's kind of cool so lots of stitches that you can do you could tell like oh here's the back if i'd show you the back you know the tension is really good i'm not having any trouble with that at all this is all on the back side so you know you're getting good stitch quality you've got a large variety of stitches that you can make you've got the ability to adjust them that you can like on the blanket stitch you can make them you can make them larger you can make them smaller you can make them closer together um you know just a lot of variety of things to do so i'm going to show you these dials over here i don't think i explained them very well okay i don't know if you can see the screen very well but this is where you will adjust your stitch width and your stitch length so if i'm going to go back to straight stitch this is the default setting 3.5 and 2.5 for the length and 3.5 is the width you can change it if you want to do the length you're going to use the up and down arrows arrows if you want to do the width you do the the right and left arrows so if i want to go up to a basting stitch i'll just go up to as far as i want and come back down if i want to do my blanket stitch um say i want it the stitch width a little bit narrower oops i need to go this way but i want the length a little bit higher then you can go up or you can go down however you want depends on the project that i'm doing if i'm doing some really small applique a lot of times i will set this at like 1.8 or 1.5 and then i'll dial this down to about two and that'll give me some really tiny blanket stitches so that works well for anything else you can do the same thing we went to 27 there's the standard setting and then you can change that if 27 is this stitch here okay it's that stitch here in the middle okay it's this stitch right here this one okay so that was what the settings were on when i sewed that but you can change that here you can make it smaller or wider you do that with any of the stitches so this is where you regulate your um stitch width and length and this is where you dial in what stitch you want you just find the number of the stitch you want and then just dial it in so easy to use think that's about it for this video i hope you found some information that you can use i hope it answered questions you may have had about the singer patchwork machine and if it didn't just post your questions in the comments below and i'll do my best to answer them overall i really do like this machine i'm glad that i bought it it it's fitting all of the needs that i have and i'm just really been enjoying it and i hope i will have it for years to come so that's it for this video i hope you're all staying safe and staying healthy and in the meantime i'll see you in the next video thanks for watching for more quilting ideas click on the video links and to keep up with my latest
