hi Quilters welcome to the 11th video in our series of projects to use leftover 2 and 1/2 in strips of fabric or jelly rolls this pattern is called typeit and uses one colorful jelly roll and one white Junior jelly roll I'm going to be using my leftover strips that have a black background and maybe a little bit of color on them this time I do recommend pressing first as I was pressing I sorted the strips into piles by length some of the strips were full width of fabric strips some were longer P strips and then I just made piles with a different lengths short medium and a little bit longer than medium plus I found one that was the perfect length for The Binding I probably made it for a different project and lost it before I could use it or I decided to use a different binding altogether luckily I saved it and now I get a chance to finally use it on a quilt I'm using this white grunge Junior jelly roll if I'd had enough light strips left over from other projects I probably would used those but I've been using them up in other projects so it's time to break out some new fabric I'm going to set aside two of the strips and cut the rest on the fold to end up with 36 strips that are about 22 in long if you are going to use leftover strips for the light make sure that all 36 of the pieces are the same length you could even piece smaller sections to get the right length the colorful strips need to be about about 42 in long or full width of fabric as cut off the bolt from Salvage to salvage I'm going to sew my full length strips to the White Strips first if I have duplicate strips of any fabric I'm only going to use one or two of them I want to have a wide variety of patterns and designs in the quilt top for more visual interest for the strips that are longer than 42 in I'm going to cut them down to size for the strips that are shorter than 42 in I will piece them together end to end to get the length that I need I'm going to make myself a length guide here at my sewing station so I can quickly measure the strips I'm going to cut a piece of this blue tape 42 in long and put it on my sewing table now instead of reaching for my measuring tape with every single strip I can just compare the strips to the blue tape to know if I need to add more length or trim it to size now that we have everything ready to go it's time to start sewing with right sides together sew a white strip to both ends of a 42in strip usually I'd say use Quin seam allowances but this time I'm sometimes not using Quin seam allowances I want to make sure that the Salvage edges aren't going to show I will trim the seams to a/4 inch later basically we're sewing a loop of fabric keep them as Loops at this point do not cut them now you can just keep feeding them through the machine until all of your white strips have been used up once I'd used up all my fulls size strips I cut some of the longer strips down to size and used up all of those the pieces I cut off my longer strips were put in the piles of smaller strips this quilt pattern is one I've been wanting to make for a long time the bonus is that it's also black and white quilt I like to make those once in a while forun they are so striking in their Simplicity but this pattern could be made in any two colors blue and white red and white or you could flip the values and use the darker blue or black in the center with a lighter fabric on the outside blue with yellow black and orange you could use any two colors as long as there is a strong contrast between the colors once i' used up all my longer strips I moved on to sewing the short strips together to get the length I needed before I added The White Strip when you are sewing The White Strip to both ends of the 42in strip do not worry if the loop gets twisted I accidentally twisted my Loops a few times it'll all work out when we cut the loops later on just keep sewing until you've used all 36 of the white strips if this is the first video you found in our series to use 2 and 1/2 in strips we will leave a link in the description below for the playlist to all of the videos we've put out so far make sure to subscribe so you can easily find all of our future strip videos the link for the pattern called type it will also be available in the description below you can print it right at home once all of your white strips have been used cut the loops apart from each other and trim the seams to a/4 in seam allowances as needed I cut them apart at my sewing table just using a scissors but you could also go to the cutting table and use your rotary cutter once they've all been trimmed it's time to head to the ironing board make sure to keep them in Loops do not cut them apart yet just press the seams to the dark fabric or press the seams open if you prefer that I ended up with 18 pieced loops and 18 whole strip Loops now I'm just going to pick out two of them to sew together and then I can cut now find a place to lay it out so you can cut the loops as you go along use the floor or a table a bed or design wall I cut my first Loop in half on the dark part of the loop and then the second Loop which was a pieced one I took out one of the off center seams put the two strips right sides together and sew them with a/4 in seam allowance the White Strips should not match up they should be a little bit off from each other use the safety pin to Mark which end you start sewing the seam we're going to leave that in until the very end if one strip is longer than the other just trim off the excess fabric with scissors after each strip that is sewn on you will need to press the strip set this will help keep the quilt flat and make it easier to work with and prevent the whole thing from turning into a curvy mess I highly recommend pressing the seam open that way it's easier to keep it straight as you're pressing if it needs some convincing to lay flat so Mary Ellen's best press spray should do the trick when I press something from the back side at the end I'll usually turn it around to the front side so I can make sure sure that I haven't pressed any creases into the front once it's pressed lay it out and determine where to cut the next two Loops to offset the white strips in the centers pin them in place and head back to the sewing machine I add strips to each side of the center unit so that I can sew two seams each round instead of one seam at a Time start the seam on the opposite end each time you add another row this will also will help prevent it from curving as you add the strips to each side keep placing safety pins at the start of the seams so you can keep track of which end you started on sometimes the strips will be on top when you add a new strip and sometimes the new strip will be on the bottom if you always had the strip on top and you only sewed the seams in One Direction the Quil top would eventually start to make a curve and it will not lay flat that alternating the direction of the seam and careful pressing should prevent it from happening make a point to remember to mark the starting point of each seam with your safety pins as you keep adding rows to both sides of the quilt top there should be a safety pin on every other row the nice thing about using the safety pins to Mark where you started each of the rows is that if you have to walk away from this project for any amount of time you will always know where you started the last seam remember to press after adding each of the rows just keep adding rows until you're done the path of the White Center fabric can be subtle or Jagged it's all up to you there's no wrong way to put this together I was so happy to be using up some of these strips I had so many that the black background strips had their very own bucket after you've sewn on the last two strips remove all of the safety pins the finished size of the quilt is 62 in x 72 in once the quilt top was finished I layered it with batting and backing on my long arm quilt frame and machine quilted it for the batting I used warm and white by the warm company in the white parts of the quilt I used white thread and on the black parts of the quilt I used black thread it's a little more work to keep changing the thread color as I'm quilting but I sure love the way it turns out I waited till after I was done quilting the quilt top to trim the sides of the quilt I started by cutting off the top and the bottom and then I used a pen and a ruler to Mark both sides so I could trim exactly where I needed to trim I used my giant Square ruler and a long ruler to Mark the sides with a Choco liner and then I cut on the line waiting until after it was quilted to trim it also helped me from stretching the edges of the quilt top I sewed The Binding to the back side of the quilt and then flip it around to the front side to top Stitch it in place with black thread and here it is completed yay in the white parts of the quilt I quilted a squiggly line design in the black parts of the quilt I used a stipple and spirals design as I was looking at this I was realizing that if ID used a light blue fabric instead of the white it would have kind of looked like a river flowing down the quilt top for the backing I pieced together some leftover hunks of backings from other recent projects that's a win-win for me because I used up scraps and I didn't need to buy anything new I only added a few new strips to my bucket this month so that was good and I was able to put the remaining black background strips into the bigger bucket they don't need their own bucket anymore so that's another win for me I'm down a whole bucket I'm going to do my happy little I empty to bucket dance and I will see you next month for another strip quilt we hope that you will hit the like button leave us a comment share with your quilting friends and sub subscribe thanks for watching and happy quilting
