Simple ESL Vocabulary Game: "Mystery Word"

hello everyone my name is Val and welcome back to my channel in today's video I'll show you a great ESL game to review vocabulary it goes by many names but I think the title the mystery word fits it best it's easy to play easy to set and as usual it requires no preparation all you need is a black board a piece of chalk and a few students to play with it encourages students to use the vocabulary they have learned and listen to word definitions you can play it as a warm-up at the beginning of your class or recap activity at the end of the class let me show you how to play it hello my my dear today we will play a game called the mystery W to review the words we learned yesterday we have two teams team ice cream and team gelato look at the board the wart in squares is a mystery wart that you need to guess first we decide which team goes first then you pick a number one to six any number you want after that I'll give you a clue the answer is a word related to the mystery word the first letter of this word goes into the corresponding Square on the board if you guess the answer correctly you earn one point and play continues with the next team selecting a number if you guess the words incorrectly you earn no points and the other team has a chance to guess while it's uh your turn you can try and guess the mystery word but remember if you guess wrong your team loses a point so please don't rush and guess the mystery word only when you are absolutely ready understand understand good the team that can guess the mystery word correctly will get Five Points in addition to one point for that round any questions any questions no questions wonderful um let's play then let's play uh Team ice cream team ice cream you want to go you want to go sure show us what you got I pick three three it is here is your clue it is something your teacher gives you to do at home after school it helps you practice what you learned in class and get better it homework homework yes yes that's right it's homework very good here we go home work good job team gelato it's your turn which number do you pick I pick one smart choice here is your clue this person goes to school to study make friends and get smarter H student yes that's right it's a student good job here we go good guess are you ready to guess the mystery WordArt no not yet that's okay that's okay team ice cream team ice cream it's your turn oh which number do you pick number six number six number six you say okay here is your clue it is a small computer that you can carry with you like a book you can use it to play games do schoolwork or browse theet laptop laptop yes that's right it is a laptop you are so clever oh my God laptop so clever are you ready to guess the mystery word no not yet that's okay that's okay no problem at all team ice cream it's your turn which number do you pick number four good choice here is your clue it's like a school class but you don't go to a classroom instead you use a computer to see and talk to your teacher and classmates on the screen the answer is two words uh online lesson online class yes yes that is correct it is an online lesson good are you ready to guess the my reward s h o l what is it are you ready yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes I'm ready it's school school yes that is correct excellent school look at that good job team gelato you get five points and oh no I forgot to give you points for correct guesses team ice cream has two points team gelato has two points and team gelato gets the mystery work which is school so team gelato get five points extra 1 2 3 four five yeah well done who is ready for round number two me me me me me me me me me please please teacher pick me me me me please please me me me me me me me me me yes you have a question well guess what I have an answer what is it teacher teacher teacher what are words number two and five can you tell us please I like your curiosity my dear number two is a special stick that teachers use to write on the Blackboard it's usually white I know I know I know I know it's chalk yes it's chalk now the last one the last one is number five so number five is a test during which your teacher asks you questions and you have to answer with words not writing it's like H it's like having a conversation with your teacher to show what you know the answer is two words H I think it's an oral test or an oral exam uh one of those things yes yes yes it's one of those things yes you right well done well done who's ready for round two anyone well I hope you enjoyed this video and if you did please like And subscribe for more educational content content if you'd like to support my Channel please consider becoming my Patron or Channel member or leave a small donation by clicking on a super thanks icon the one with a dollar sign inside many thanks and happy teaching [Music] bye
