I mean Simon I've got to say and I know yeah this is coming from a Scot and Scotland are out there could be no excuses now for England not to go deep if not all the way oh because the draw favors them I mean each game at a time I mean there's nothing we've seen from the three games that we can grasp onto to suggest that the pre tournament ratings and perceptions and optimism is going to manifest itself in an ultimate outcome but when you get into The Knockout stages you have to be a little bit braver because you can't to Simply allow the game to be well it's the next game that we can get a result from I would prefer to play the Dutch um because I think it's a more open game I think the Dutch will play a brand of football that's attacking and whilst we've had reservations and repeated reservations about our Central you know our defensive unit that seems to be the least problematic part of our team right now yeah so I would prefer because I think our better players are going to be given an opportunity to express themselves against a Dutch side but look whoever they play they've got to play well in um and at this moment in time it's very difficult to make an argument besides grasping at straws about how well we're playing and Five Points tells us that we've gotten out of a group um which is a very Bland group someone was saying Scott was talking about the 1990 uh um uh World Cup and how that resembled specifically the same sort of outcomes the only team that won a a game in that group were England different points totals at those times but look we have to be a lot better and a lot Bolder and that starts with the manager ends up with a players um because what we've seen so far and people don't like it and people can talk about criticism and this idea that um English fans are discontented and Mal contents there's a good reason for that because they're seeing when they talk about oh the French just struggled through and this team and the Italians are struggled through yeah but they've won things in recent years they have opportunity to celebrate some of the things we've had six Decades of not winning anything and what we're seeing is and we've managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in three tournaments in a row and England fans can see the same thing replicating itself this is why perhaps you've got this attitude and Southgate talks about this sort of environment this strange environment it's all well and good being brave and walking over to the fans and clapping them be brave with your team selection be brave with the way that you set your players up rather than be brave tub thumping over to the fans and clapping them whilst they give you a few booze have you where are you at this morning then Simon with your expect have you tempered your expectation with England well I think you can't not do can you I mean I still think there's a possibility that they're going to find their way through because I don't think there's any one at this moment in time that's really I mean the Spanish look great the Germans are having a you know a good time of it because they haven't had much opposition at this moment in time but there's still this perception in me that we're going to find something that eventually for a combination of luck and um sheer bloody mindedness an opportunity to get ourselves through to a meaningful stage of the tournament and still yet have that fixture that I always allude to which is the fixture where no one one really puts England to be the favorite in that game and then once we win that game then we'll win a tournament but at this moment in time we look such a poor outfit and people saying criticism criticism criticism the only thing that wrong about criticism is if it's unfair if it's unfair and it's destructive well it's not quar is it we we watched an England side yesterday in the first half that without taking it to the superlative Beggars belief I mean I don't know why KL Walker's told that he mustn't go over the halfway line in the first half I mean there's something that's being told to these England players as before a game that's exhibiting CU in the second half the tempo the momentum the urgency all of the energy everything that we talked about that you can probably expect as a fundamental from a top International side that we purport to be exhibit itself okay the quality at the end wasn't there our finishing wasn't great and we didn't create many chances but the actual tempo of the game if we'd started that way we'd have beaten the slovenians and people talk about this High Press the slovenians play with a 35% percentage so they are counterattacking side we knew that we could press up against them and the Conor Gallagher decision most people even you know us that sit on the sidelines as non-f football people thought that's a strange decision Connor Gallagher and so the kid gets the hook because it's not that the dynamic is not right and I and I do lay the blame at Southgate to some extent what about the players as well though yeah of course the players I mean I'm I'm Keen to get your view on that this insipidness that seems to um pervade from at the moment how much of it is down to Southgate his tactics and how much of it is down to these players who are extremely experienced top professionals but we talk about confidence and we talk about the belief in themselves and I was listening to some observations last night about you know Belling and warming up and ballooning balls Over the Bar looking like he lack confidence when get on the pitch are we really talking about I know he's young but are we really talking about how these players can have a couple of sort of low lowlevel games and all of a sudden their confidence is gone I mean we've got we've got a 20 19yearold kid comes on at halftime Kobe Mayo that's played 20 odd games with man united now we're turning around and saying that's a solution what about the senior players that have been out there what about the players are supposed to be the players that give you the example of how to play for England they're the ones that aren't doing their jobs Simon can you point to one England player who right now is playing at the level he would expect to be playing at in the finals well the challenge is that we look at our players and this is the English fans look at our players they play for the biggest clubs in the domestic league and the most well no it's difficult to say that it is but the reason why I'm caveat it is because we build these players up to be these wonderful well beaters and then we look at who they're playing alongside so you know Jude bellingham's playing in for Real Madrid where a manager that's got a very definite set of ideals and philosophies that leads his team with a group of players that understand their jobs and responsibilities so he gets to look like the player he is drop him into England we don't know whether we're Arthur or Marthur half the time so the challenge for the players is how do they look good they're playing in positions that often aren't their position they play for their clubs and they're playing within a culture that seems to have a constant mentality of worrying about what's going to happen to us rather than what we're going to do to them so then you look at the the individual players and go well where are you I mean I think you're seeing more from foden I think you're seeing more from foden in the last two games um to illustrate that he's beginning to find his feet um in this tournament I mean bellingham's been in and hours um but other than that you're looking around the pitch and going well what is it co Palmer comes on and the next thing that everyone will be doing is co Palmer let's not forget that if Cole Palmer started in this game he probably would be in the same position as everybody else he comes on with 20 minutes to go against a tiring Slovenian side and all of a sudden he's the cure for all our alses um it's difficult to take much positive away from it besides the fact that the Tempo that we are required and should be playing at was exhibited in the second half um just to recap though we when we arrived here in Germany and and the tournament got underway it's fair to say that you you you were saying to me this is the time this must be the time but you were quite bullish about it it's got to be the time that England lift this trophy as you say almost six Decades of of frustration are you tempering that expectation at this stage well you know I'm not um British bulldog mentality of ultimately everything is going to be positive because that's my my default setting there's very little that you can take from the first three games to suggest that we've got a side that's going to find itself into an opportunity to win it yeah but these three games are incidental because we've gotten through the group that group is done now and so we've done the job on the price on the ticket was to get out the group and win the group however we've done it we've done it right for since for for a combination of luck and other teams being not particularly great either yes but Simon if they're incidental why were England fans only a couple of them Chuck in plastic cups at Southgate last night and why were some England fans booing if those games were incidental because because you came with me last night samon and you expected quite rightly in my view you expected to see an England win over svia well of course I did because on paper which is not where the game is played performance yeah and you would expect a performance and you expected a raising of the game and in the first half well you got neither you saw 60 Minutes against the serbs where it was it was poor we saw 90 minutes against the D where it was poor and we've now seen 45 minutes against um um the slovenians that were po so you've got to ask yourself why is this man and all can you point to any positives this morning Simon for me not not really no I can I know you would wish to in an Ideal World I can look at the fact that the tempo in the second half this idea that the players are tired and they can't press and and and ultimately we've got a challenge on our hands in certain respects we showed a significant level of urgency in the second half that if we have played that way from the first whistle I would have expected us to have eventually unpicked the cenans there wasn't enough out there to pick at we can sorry to put your hat on and say aha I can which direction we're going in some of these decisions are going to be forced upon Southgate and I want my big thing was with the front six that we've got if we're Brave and we go after these games um then we will be in a good position but we haven't been so we can't be optimistic can we no I think all of that is Fair Simon more than fair um what was your reaction to it last night and we're going to take some calls Simon Simon and I in dorf we are based at this present time uh obviously I'm going to move as to where England end up if they get through on Sunday night etc
