hello everyone my name is Rita I'm from Lebanon I speak Arabic well I speak the Lebanese dialect also but today we're going to focus about on first Hub rather than the Lebanese dialect so hello everyone my name is Gaia I'm Italian and I am Sicilian so I live in Sicily I was born here um and I speak Italian with most of my relatives and Friends however Sicilian is well has had a very strong influence for me growing up and of course it's a very important part of my culture perfect thank you so much I'm very excited for this video we have a bunch of words that we're going to compare in common between the two and there's a there's a lot of history behind this which I welcome people to talk about and discuss in the comments but uh it's very very interesting and as I mentioned there are some words which might be a little bit different when it comes to how they are used today but once we talk about them and Define them you'll understand where the similarity is so now we're going to start off and do the first Arabic word whenever you're right okay so first word is jeziero zero oh like gcira so like an island a peninsula yes that's a nine yeah okay I I see I see the similarity now okay so the first Sicilian word is tabuto uh it's the wood and Arabic it's a it's a coffin yes it's exactly the same wow yes it's it's what we refer to uh when we want to describe a coffin yes okay interesting okay second word is skin oh me skinny this is easy um Sicilian so it's like someone it's like saying it's an exclamation and you say like poor thing poor you I'm sorry for you yeah exactly can you say that again okay rice yes it's a bus yes yes um here in Sicily it's actually used to refer to it was used mainly to refer to the man that uh LED uh fishing the fishing of tuna um and the rice was the man who took care of placing the Nets and then directed like um traditional uh Sicilian fishing ceremony which is known as a matanza which actually literally translates into Slaughter or killing because it it is how we traditionally captured uh tuna fish and it was quite bloody um and very um Macabre I would say that's a fishing process um and everything was detected by the the rice so the man who took care of everything I think probably because you know as people who live in an island we give a lot of value to fishing right which is what mainly provides us food and everything else so there's a deep connection with the sea um therefore I think that the person who takes charge of fishing necessarily has to play an important role in Sicily so it's mamluk look this is also easy in in Sicilian um it's like a stupid person a full uh someone you make fun of so that's for me this is a this is another word that has um kind of changed the way that it is used and in Arabic it means um a Slave someone who owned by another one oh okay okay the next Sicilian word is Diary it's um it's a house but yeah my house okay um it's uh oh we also have the in Italian but it all it only refers to um something that like places where you sit outside of a restaurant that's like the water uh however at Yeti um are ancient uh repression houses carved into limestone Rock which is very malleable and they are quite inaccessible nowadays but they are very common you can find them in many many caves around the area where I live okay that's interesting because it still means um a house but I guess it changed yeah whereas mentioned it's like a specific kind of house yes the word is land but I have to say that before doing this video I never ever heard about this word because uh in Lebanese we say Samsung okay I see I don't think it means anything in Sicilian but it's yeah it's it's actually the first word you said connects to Sicilian and the second one to Italian so in Sicilian we refer to Sesame as didulana whereas in Italian oh I always use the word to refer to a traditional Suite that we make around Christmas time which is made with um sesame seeds almonds honey and that is referred to as the Juliana and since the main ingredient is in fact Juliana then it is also the name of Sesame and Sicilian okay so the next word is kitara it's a guitar what's the word in Arabic guitar okay um shizor shisha can you say that again sure it's like to to fight can it be really oh okay and it's Sharia Sharia Sharia okay so the last word is aditsari Adidas okay um can you say it again oh it's as is yeah yeah so what does it mean in Arabic uh someone who's very close to you um sometimes we say um like you're you're special to me like you're someone that's special to me oh okay we can also use another sweetheart in a way to like you can I mean the way we use it it could mean like sweetheart or deer yeah exactly sweetheart okay okay for a guy and Aziza for for a girl you can mention how in Sicilian it has a similar meaning but it's um a little different yeah um uh is a verb and uh it needs to make someone or something attractive like to embellish something to make it beautiful through ornaments accessories and everything else and again the history behind this is that the original word as we mentioned is like sweetheart or someone who's very uh you know special to you so you know the way you see them inside and outside are very beautiful right so the way that it's used in Sicilian is like oh to make something very attractive and beautiful you know so again the definition changes but you can kind of see how absolutely yeah yeah it's interesting how it's a verb so now let's uh we're gonna do the sentences okay so the sentence is okay uh I understand the last word which probably means like sugar yes which is in Sicilian but as for I mean before I cannot say can you say that again ashai so I make it easy for you yeah yeah sorry just because I I'm I know about chai tea not because we say chai in Italian or something yeah I figured that's why I used it yeah it means I drink tea with sugar okay yeah okay so I wasn't as nice as you because my sentence uh is a tongue twister so it's so funny okay so the sentence is um the word is the second one yes it's uh cotton it's a cup yeah but the rest of the uh no yeah um it uh it's not easy okay so it's meant to make you swear in Sicilian I'm not going to swim but the purpose of the tongue twister um means on my knees that means cotton and kujiya is the past tense of um to pick up something okay so I was picking up cotton on my knees kudia I was about yeah guess that's but the word the word obviously you kind of get it on the spot yeah what happens a lot of times like with sentences once you pick up one word and then you can figure out another just by context you can sort of put it together and guess that was really wonderful thank you so much to both of you um but I always knew that there connection between course but this gave me like a chance of actually seeing how these languages are connected not only through language but also through culture and all the cultural references that we have to make when we speak a language right so it's wonderful to see how words change adapt but still maintain or share something like that relates them to the core and it makes us able to understand each other even if um we're just talking about a few words but yeah um I always knew that Arabic had a lot of influence on uh Portuguese and Spanish just like I told you but it never occurred to me that it could also have an influence on Sicilian and it was really interesting to see that well a lot of Arabic words are also present and in this in this beautiful language but sometimes not in the same meaning like the meaning changes a lot um through through the years but but well you can always find um a link between between these words yeah yeah exactly exactly like as I said before like the definition is not exactly the same sometimes but once you trace the history and you you look at it in depth you realize oh okay yeah now that makes sense yeah anyways thank you so much it was it was really interesting like that the research for me was very educational as well so I I learned quite a lot through the process and uh for people who are watching I know there are other connections and other terms out there that link the two languages so you're welcome to share that with us but uh once again from me thank you so much it was really wonderful
