what's going on everybody it's Joe from Gad stre Tech and today we're going to talk about the simgot super mix 4 the four being the fact that it has four different driver types in this tiny little housing we're going to get into all the specs but it's a new and exciting release the em6 L has been probably one of my most talked about IMS on the channel at least on the gaming side because you know when it came out and at the current sale price of 110 bucks the performance you get for gaming and overall technicalities and base qualities was excellent so when the super mix 4 is coming out with the new driver technology switching instead of a hybrid to a quad driver system for not much more money naturally there's going to be a lot of excitement about this now simgot did send this to me for review it won't affect what I say and I do use measurements to kind of back up some of the sound quality claims I'll be making not everything's going to be positive I will disclose what I like and don't like about this IM but I do want to disclose that I will have generic uh affiliate links in the description below I have no Kickbacks with simgot but you know obviously purchase it wherever you like and hopefully you found this video helpful in making your decision so the super mix 4 what makes it exciting for one it's the price it's being touted as an upgrade over the em6 L but it's not much more than the em6 L this one's only $150 and when you consider that it's going to a quad driver system instead of a hybrid as long as it's executed well chances are this should be a better IM and in some cases it is but for $150 one of the first things that stood out to me and this is really important to consider when you're uh choosing what to to pair it with is the impedance of these guys is 7.2 ohms that is very very low IMS are typically lower impedance but usually 16 to 40 ohm for the most part being all the way down to 7.2 means it's going to be more sensitive to output impedance and this is critically important because if you have something like the creative gc7 which has an output impedance closer to 10 ohms that's not going to be the best pairing with this now it will work you won't damage anything but whenever you have something that has crossovers with different drivers that likely have different individual impedances your output impedance will have a greater impact on the tonality of the IM when I measure this I measure this with equipment that has less than 05 ohms of output impedance so the frequency response you'll see later is of that maybe I'll show a measurement with high output impedance to give you an idea if and how it changes but I do want to disclose that people often ask me about sensitivity and with most I they're very easy to drive this is no exception it's raded at 120 DB and frankly I found that I could pretty much run it off anything whether you have a $10 Apple dongle or something that's much more elaborate these are going to respond uh fairly well now the other spec that's incredibly important is the boore and the only frustrating thing physically I had with this guy is the fact that there's still no lip some people don't care about that this is a smaller design it it helps significantly with comfort so I do like that it's a smaller lip and just to show you what I mean so this is zeroed out now I'm going to measure the bore and I'll go to the more precise little piece here 5.73 mm and just in case it's slightly oblong let's go to that 5.65 I'm at a slight angle here you're at about 5.7 mimet so it's a fairly small bore when you consider the driver Arrangement that's pretty reasonable and the fact that there's no lip which most IMS take you in the 6 Plus millim range it should be very comfortable the only downside with not having a lip and my only complaint is just like the em6 l once in a while the tips just slide off there's less holding it in place so it's very sensitive to uh tip placement as far as the board length it's this is pretty average it's not like it's a a huge uh length barrel so if you're worried about how far it goes into your ear you know that's going to be kind of subjective um your ear shape is going to play a big difference on comfort so I don't want to say anything in terms of absolute I do like this shape though and this little scalloped piece here that kind of sticks out that does help it uh maintain a more stable fit in my ear a lot of times when you get like a flat face ey in they tend to move a little bit that can break the seal which leads me to the tips there's not a lot of tips in the bag mine came with six totals so three different pairs you have a small medium large silicone tip nothing special playing around with tips if you're not happy with the fitment depending on the opening of the tip or the size of it it can change upper frequency response as well but the most important thing with the tip is making sure that you have a perfect seal because you don't want all that base to be rolled off if the seal is broken or if they're a little bit loose or if you go too large of a tip and it crinkles you lose a lot of that subbase extension and that's something super mix has a lot of normally I don't dwell too much on the cables but they're getting more and more important nowadays because competitors are stepping up this is an awesome cable Sim got cables on the higher end stuff they tend to be really nice the only Sim got cable I wasn't a big fan of is their you know $20 ew100 but this is really nice it's a silverplated ofc cable which means oxygen-free copper some companies don't use ofc whether you think it makes a difference in sound quality is your own opinion but it usually means it's a better quality cable they're at least using real materials for the wire and not like tin plated stuff so I like the cable I like the length I like the memory effect on what Hooks on your ear it's just the right thickness for me and stiffness so I find them very comfortable to wear so let's talk about sound quality from an objective standpoint first which takes my opinion out of it and it shows you how my rig measures it I'm using an IC 7eleven coupler clone straight to the coupler with an XLR interface so if you are comparing measurements just compare it to other measurements on my database other coupler clones there may be a slight variance there or if they're using a totally different method the measurements don't translate but this does help you kind of compare against IMs I have measured so taking a look at the measurements it's quite nice now when you compare to the Harmon 2019 curve it's pretty well in line the glaring thing here which this can change significantly this is how my coupler here is the upper treble but just focusing on like 10,000 HZ and up you're going to see some extension there where these Peaks uh hit your ear is going to depend on your ear canal shape how deep your ear canal is the size of it how they're positioned that greatly affects upper treble and where the Peaks are because you're dealing with you know resonances of the human anatomy you know like your ear will resonate differently I'll translate some of this so obviously you have really good subbase extension it's filled in all the way down to 20 HZ and then some so if you're craving deep base these do a significantly good job there and it does carry a little bit into the mid base and upper base area where it transition in a mids you can see like in the 80 to 150 Herz it's just above Harmon now I think there's been some studies that say the 7-Eleven couplers kind of overestimate base response and we typically hear a little bit less than what the measurement suggests I'm not trying to confuse you but this isn't like gobs and gobs of Bas but it's still very very nice base very full I'll use my subjective uh word soup afterwards the upper frequencies so when you look at like 1,000 HZ to 2,000 Just a Touch forward again on my coupler clone it's not too much deviating from that this is very much a har and tuned now you have more filled in area in like the 4 to 6,000 htz area which is like kind of like your PIN region um depending on how you're sensitive to these frequencies it can come across as a a little bit too forward and detailed and to some people it's going to sound just right uh a lot of times you'll see a little bit of a scoop here so it just depends on the product you're shopping and then again going all the way back to the Tweeter Arrangement you have a lot of upper treble extension now this four driver system uses a dynamic driver for the base then you have Bas for the mids balanced armature you have a planar driver for some of the uh upper frequencies you know getting into your low treble then it uses a piso Electric driver for your super high frequencies which is a science explanation in itself they're really better suited for ultra high frequencies and in this case that's where you're getting all that extension and when you have a lot of upper frequency extension it's going to react very differently to different people I I don't like too much upper treble but if you have some hearing damage or loss or you just prefer a very bright sound signature having that extension is nice because it can create more of a sense of space and openness a lot of IM IMS tend to sound closed off and claustrophobic if you will and the super mix doesn't really do that thanks in part to that driver Arrangement now the other thing I want to point out is it does hide the crossover points rather well so it's it's a little bit difficult to hear where the base is transitioning to the ba where the ba is transitioning to the plan R um you're not hearing like a gap or any kind of like really odd Spike where there's a harsh point so I feel like they tuned it really well on the crossover side and you can see that with the measurements now I do want to compare it to a few others that are kind of standouts to me so the EML is something I've talked about a lot I love the em6 L you can see on this chart that the em6 L has a little bit less subbase and it carries more into the low mid so it's going to have even though it has less deep base it'll have a slightly warmer sound signature partly because as you get into the upper mid-range and treble region it's just not as emphasized the vocals are going to be a little bit softer and smoothed over and you don't have that same peaky upper treble EXT ition as well so some people are going to like the em6 L more if you're preferring to have more of a warmer uh more comfortable sound profile whereas the super mix are going to be more revealing now I want to talk about one more IM that's really popular in this price range and the retail price is 150 I know it's gone down a little bit but this is the truth air Nova the Nova has almost the same subbase extension but because of the way it's tuned elsewhere not being as forward as the super mix it will come across as a little bit more Bassy to me the Nova when you wear it has deeper bass extension it seems to just dig a little bit deeper so if you're chasing the strongest subbase you can get whether it's hip-hop trap music that type of thing uh the truth their novva is still going to give you that I'll I'll talk about them more subjectively but from a measurement side you can see a lot of these are fairly similar with the em6 L again being a little bit warmer comfier sound these are incredible at $150 so I'm going to start with some of the things I absolutely love about them it one is the technicality and detail retrieval is exceptional it's not just the fact that it has strong treble and upper treble which a lot of people perceive as detail but when you have more nuanced and Quiet Moments something like the super mix 4 is definitely class leading in this area it Rivals much more expensive IMS in terms of technicalities and macroon dnamic now if you don't know what that means it's okay basically when you have another IM IM that may not be as resolving you know the the background like finger sliding on the string of an instrument or the pedal creaking in a piano some of those sounds are more subtle and if you have a poorly resolving audio product you may not hear those as much it's almost like there's just a little piece of fabric between between the driver and your ear higher quality IMS the reason why I have some of these more expensive ones here that I'll talk about tend to be more resolving it's not so much that their sound signature is always better in fact some very inexpensive IM IMS have better sound signatures than much more expensive IM IMS but in this case um this really Bridges the Gap in terms of that resolution and for those of you that are concerned with gaming performance I'll get into it more but that does help with that as well another thing I like is the base response it's not just the amplitude side because that is more personal preference but it's still very detailed in the subbase region so the base texture is great on the super mix and that's no small feat because the em6 L was great and it was still considered one of the best values under 200 bucks but the Nova the base texture in depth is was a standout feature if you're chasing subbase the Nova was to me always one of the better picks to go with and this is so so close for the base extension while also having some other advantages on its own so I think that's a huge uh win for the super mix in my opinion it's just a matter if you want that much base or not now where I struggle a little bit with the super mix 4 is the mid-range and treble and it's a kind of a two-part thing it has great technicalities I talked about how much detail you get out of it but the only issue I have is when when you have this kind of tuning with the Harmon curve being what it is plus a really strong up or treble extension with this particular driver Arrangement it sounds just a little bit metallic to me in the upper frequencies and vocals primarily female vocals have more of a wispy breathy type sound to it it's not as natural you know if you're chasing neutrality from music is as great as these are for base uh performance both quantity and quality and detail retrieval cuz again I don't think there's much under $200 that resolve as well as this the issue is I don't think certain vocals or instruments sound quite as natural now I may butcher the name so I'm sorry but one classical track that stood out with was box uh cello Suites number three and four by Sonia wider atherson um I'll put a picture on the screen certain classical music and and orchestral music just sounds absolutely incredible on these when you get that kind of detail retrieval and upper extension that these have those songs are like an worldly listening experience you may not like the genre and that's okay but if you get these give it a shot and maybe you'll see what I'm talking about my issue is when you start dealing with this kind of extension and metallic tamber to it even listening to like an acoustic guitar which you don't think metal you think more like um you know romance in the music more intimacy and connection to an acoustic performance these add just a little bit more of a ring and metallic Plucky sound to the guitar so depending on the track it can be a little off-putting uh again on thinner vocals I find it to be a little bit too breathy and thin and I want it to just be a little bit more full it's one of those things where you can fix some of this with EQ and then for under $200 you're getting something that's kind of like the king of detail with the Bass Performance and it's much easier to reduce some base than try to add it when it comes to audio products it means you're not working the driver as hard so you're almost better off having to do reductive EQ than additive EQ and that's a huge advantage of the super mix there's no real area that I feel like I have to add I would just reduce it and the byproduct of that is you're going to fill in the mids a little bit more just by tampering the upper frequencies and maybe the base but maybe just start with the treble on the node of gaming this is where these things shine and it's not perfect so that metallic upper treble issue I was talking about it really depends on the game you're playing uh Call of Duty doesn't have too much upper treble extension so this kind of helps preserve that spaciness and sounds stage that some people are looking for and with the subbase it has it keeps the immersion Factor really high because it has a multi-driver Arrangement because the image uh Imaging and Driver matching is fantastic which is not an easy feat for a four driver system on each side I find the Imaging performance to be absolutely incredible that detail retrieval also comes in handy in games like Call of Duty and here's where I'm in the conundrum cuz the em6 L has always been my favorite uh IM for gaming for the money I recommend it left and right you're going to see more videos coming out where I still talk about this where the em6 L um shows some of its weakness to the super mix is you can't hear that really really subtle detail as much as you can with the super mix I still would rather EQ the super mix if I couldn't EQ either I'd probably just play on the em6 L but when it comes to like explosions game performance all of that I didn't find it to be a significant issue in any regard and it's not so forward in the area that Call of Duty has like that metallic ringing sound when a I use this example a lot but just to keep it simple when a uh casing is leaving a rifle um you're reloading uh shooting certain guns this still does a good job there and it's not like two ear piercing so that's okay I think the em6 L has a better sound signature but this guy the super mix just is better for detail my and it's also excellent for Rainbow 6 Siege and X defiant this is a good sound signature future for that I'm going to be fixing or releasing some eqs for those games soon because the first one I'm coming out with very very soon I've spent a lot of time on this is my Apex Legends custom EQ I do not like the super mix as much on apex Legends the problem with Apex is when you have certain kills and effects and the amount of Base that game has and when there's explosions it can drown out some footsteps and this sound signature uh is too Bassy for me in chaotic scenes on apex and at the same time all the kill effects that you get that's like really high frequency comes through very strong on the super mix and that creates listening fatigue so you have to turn the volume down a little bit and then you're losing all those really important audio cues in the mid-range whereas even though the em6 L isn't quite as resolving it has a sound signature that allows me to maintain a slightly higher listening volume because it's focusing more on the audio cues that I care about so without EQ I it really depends on the game you play now I would take both of these over the Nova as far as gaming I think they both perform better for gaming the Nova is just a little bit better for me from music um overall because it has some of the same flaws of the super mix but without that really strong metallic upper treble so of the three this is a good balance of detail retrieval and overall Harmon tuning the em6 L is a little bit warmer and easier to listen to the vocals don't sound as thin but it's also not as clear now on the note of gaming I'm going to bring up some uh to me future Legends here I'm going to do a dedicated review on this but I got the Kiwi ears Orchestra light these are $250 uh and they're really no better than the super mix for the money so that is huge the only advantage that the orchestras have to me is in Apex without EQ they seem to work much better for Apex whereas Call of Duty the sound signatures are pretty much interchangeable I do like the super mix comfort more my issue with the orchestras are the shells are absolutely massive you can see a big difference there um they also don't vent as much and that's an important thing for people these are still rather sealed they're not super open feeling on your ear so like that plunger effect but the orchestras are kind of at the upper end for creating a seal and suction and that can create long-term Comfort issues they also have a slightly larger bore but not by much now I want to talk about two really expensive IMS and why the super mix is still in contention here so this is the high senior Mega 5 EST which I think some people are starting to call Mega Fest I'll be reviewing these These are absolutely fantastic for music um just incredible IM IM because they're a little bit smoother up top and it's similar to the io audio valare which is a $600 IM these are gorgeous I mean they're comfortable they sound great they reek of high quality if you will the reason why these are here is yes they are a little bit better on the music side for me but when it comes to technicalities and detail retrieval the super mix is up there with them they are pretty much as resolving and that is a huge feat when you start comparing to IMS that are essentially four times the price depending on you know the time you buy in your discounts these just have an edge and overall tuning for me for music I think they sound more natural and that's kind of where you start paying a little bit more I think it's a more refined process I didn't bring these out to say these are just better than that I think the fact that these are even in the same discussion with much more expensive of IM in terms of how well you can hear subtleties of things as a testament to how good the super mix are so at the end of the day you just have to decide if you're okay with that sound signature for music it's going to sound again thin it's going to sound a little bit metallic and bright some people are chasing that that's going to favor orchestral music classical it'll work well with rap and hip-hop if for those chasing the deep subbase but the sound signature isn't the best for a lot of female vocals and a lot of rock especially acoustic fix I think it's just a tad bright nothing a little EQ can't fix cuz they're crazy comfortable and again I don't think there's an IM remotely close to this price range that excels in other areas as well as it does so hopefully you found the review helpful uh if you have any questions shoot me a comment below let me know what you think about this do you think this is a good sound signature for you or are you chasing something else you know what what's important to you as far as what you expect from this price range cuz I'm always curious what you think as well but yeah thanks so much hit that like And subscribe subscribe button and
