[Applause] oh very very exuberant yes happy christmas to everyone at sib cd from megan and myself and of course fabian and kate behind the scenes as well we'll be joined by lindsay chapman in a minute of course but we love chris i love christmas i really enjoy i mean i've got into the festive spirit chris on the other hand quite yet but you will in a second yes get that on your head thank you thank you thank you i have actually got into the festive spirit so perhaps not the tinsel not quite yet but it's certainly christmas morning there's still time there is still time there is still time listen i've got a cracker anyway go on oh little packet of marbles there is there a joke or is this is there a joke that we can read out on there normally oh there is a joke okay i've got to be a joke it's got to be you can't have a christmas cracker without you those feeder cams in america are pretty yeah they're great aren't they right i love the um the the penguin one okay this is one of my favorite jokes actually i read this in the bino when i was uh just a boy many you look at the action look oh yes cardinal yeah superb what's that on the other side there sap sucker is it oh no it's not it's a casserole of some kind had a look getting back i remember many years ago what happened to the hyena who swallowed an oxo cube he made a laughing stock of himself oh absolutely super shocking absolutely superb where's lindsay chapman lindsay are you there i am here yes merry christmas to both of you and you both got something on your head so hurrah yes merry christmas to you all it's wonderful wonderful wonderful to see you i hope you're all doing okay this christmas day obviously things have chopped and changed quite a lot over the last few months and weeks and days so it's lovely to be with you on christmas day what have you got for us lindsay there's quite a lot of activity on social media people who are locked down again are looking into their gardens and engaging with their wildlife just like they did in the spring they certainly are yes and we've seen some fab things on social media this was sent in to sibc by paul roberts and this is fantastic because this christmas tree is absolutely alive with pied wagtails this is in bridge end in wales so look there's the christmas tree and then if you get up close and personal with the tree it's full of birds incredible and um we actually tweeted this out and said you know can you do any better than this clip from paul roberts because it is quite stunning what do you both think about a live christmas tree wow i love pirate wagtails you see they're one of my favorite birds and when they come together for roost in cities in the winter time it's great i mean they go into the cities because it's so much warmer in our cities up to five degrees centigrade warmer in the city center and for these tiny birds of course that's the difference between life and death overnight in the winter maybe those lights are helping probably yeah and also the tree evergreen so it's going to be sheltered it's tucked down there in the precinct but what a treat for those people who've gone to see that christmas tree fantastic really really nice just wonderful wonderful stuff but as i say we did tweet out we said look hey can you do any better than what's going on in bridge end in wales and there was lots of chat lots of people started talking to each other and said i've seen this i've seen that there was somebody that had a sparrow in their christmas tree last year not quite sure how it got in but they opened the window and it flew off because that tree was inside so not too sure how that sparrow got there and lots of people's cats play with their bottom of their trees their baubles as well but have a look at a few of these pictures that we have been sent in when we said with four balls did you say that the christmas tree the cats were playing with their baubles yeah this is a family oh christmas day it's a family show your mind honestly honestly the normal the tree ball balls oh of course oh yes yes yes i'm sorry lindsay that's all right megan i'm i you know we didn't have to explain cheeky chris beckham but yes yes quite right the tree bubbles anyway uh some people got back in touch and we were sent this picture so have a little look i believe that this is from a ravens big wildlife center look at that little owl it's not a little owl in the sense that it's not a little out athene noctua this is a foreign species sore wet out it's a north american species it is yeah it's a smaller species that they get in the northeast of america they only grow to about 8.6 inches but this little guy hitched a ride by accident on the rockefeller christmas tree and went all the way across the state of new york and then what they found him on the train we found him on the tree and i think he went to the wildlife center didn't he bit of recuperation to kind of get his strength back a little bit i think he's doing quite well lindsay isn't he that's right yes it's all good now but you've got the story exactly right and what what a brilliant thing to capture and to see i knew that you'd enjoy that then we only should get this one this says greetings from slovakia on it so take a look at this it's just a very very pretty tree indeed ah now that is a way to decorate your tree isn't it come on you wouldn't complain too much about putting up the decks if they were all bad i would not looks like there's a roller down at the bottom oh yes woodpecker at the top angelic woodpecker subspecies of i don't know which other subspecies of a subspecies superb that's more my type of yeah that's your kind of tree isn't it it's very nicely done and i have to say it does outdo the robin that i have made out glass on my tree every year though my tree gets a name so it's been kate bush last year it was daniel defer and this year it's called fiona spruce so they've all got good names that they might not have quite as much wildlife on then uh we would send this picture this one came in from michael curtin so again not bad in terms of i quite like the arrangement of birds within that tree it's quite nicely done yeah it's quite kind of semi-symmetrical isn't it well there's a little bit down on the left hand side distribution yeah i like the distribution of the birds i like the silhouette the black and white monochrome nature of it yes okay i'm going to give it christmas it's christmas chris what are you giving it on 1.4 4.4 merry christmas everybody what a generous man uh and then lee sent this one in as well lee amer sent this quite stunning picture in and i really like the the lights and the birds within that one although i can't tell what they are because i'm not actually wearing my contact lenses so i have no idea that's lovely they look like pied wag tiles yes yeah it's a roost isn't it that i like that a lot i like the lights going up and then they're all sat there it's very sweet it's pretty good yeah nice roost and and you can see things like long tail tits as well we get those in quite big groups around us as well so it's lovely to go out and see them so just some brilliant chat that came back from that fantastic piece of footage from paul roberts very nice indeed although meg's i think that you have also been on the lookout am i right in terms of yeah i have been i found this brilliant photograph of a fox investigating some foxy christmas decorations look at this because i thought this was really sweet imagine being that fox wandering up there and thinking who is that and why is he shining brighter than me well i'd argue that he's probably not shining you know i like real boxing yes it's pretty cool christmas decorations isn't it that is a pretty cool forget about you and why is it everyone's got more cool christmas decorations than i've got because your christmas decorations are from the 1800s what have you got for this is it is it a candle handed down to the family you know generation after generation um all the way from the neolithic i've got some um you know i mean this tinsel is how i mean it's falling a bit you know the bits of reindeer that we've got were found in a cave in uh in southwestern france um they're archaeological relics and they may not be too glittery but they're you know fascinating from a sort of a you know human cultural point of view of course fascinating fascinating shall we move on shall we move on to kate mcrae's cameras because kate has fantastic cameras and she's got a christmas setup as well she has indeed kate's a great friend of course sibc and many other people follow her cameras they're brilliant really really hard and she's gone a little bit um well i don't know over the top oh i wouldn't say over the top oh it's a perfect christmas scene oh my goodness i love that yeah the little nutcrackers she is absolutely brilliant very imaginative with what she does she sits down with um peter perv's john knox and valerie singleton and they they they glue them together and handcraft them out it's a joke way too late okay yeah yeah um very blue peter but very very good indeed so you can always check out kate's cameras online wildlife kate now is her moniker which she uses top work top work yeah keep watching keep watching because i think there is also a wood mouse that then something quite surprising happens to let's see if we can watch this this is an incredible piece of wood look at that oh no way oh i haven't seen this before now that is incredible so that looks it's a wood mouse being ambushed by a tawny but obviously the tawny can't get through because of the wonderful christmas decorations let's take another look look at that oh my goodness me that's good stuff isn't it saved by garish decorations it's brilliant isn't it just hunkering down in the back of that little market there goodness me yeah it's me fantastic stuff so what have you got planned for the rest of the day then bit more um christmas spirit yes a little bit more christmas spirit just gonna go and check on my cat and it's baubles i don't have a cat um but yes then a couple of mince pies i'm a bit of a mince pie fiend so i'm gonna get going with the old mince pies and then maybe a mulled wine it's all to play for i'm not going anywhere so you know as with all of you merry christmas i hope you're making the best of it lindsay mulled wine in a block of cheese goes down really well yes and i have to say being from yorkshire christmas cake and wednesday dale cheese together that is where it's at okay christmas cake and wednesday dale cheese it's a big thing in yorkshire it's amazing try that that sounds good merry christmas lindsay thank you so much hope you obviously i'm doing it i'm doing the christmas dinner so obviously um it's gonna be three minutes uh take out we cover that's why i got you this as a present oh yeah yeah what is it well you have to open it up you know because you said you were cooking the dinner because normally you buy you know them in bags and put them in the oven the roast potatoes you have to make roast potatoes from scratch you can't do it because last time you put the ones in the um the oven they came out still frozen when we had frozen christmas dinner that was a couple years ago now so if not i mean i make really good recipes so i can do it if you want but i thought i'd give you maybe maybe i'll give you maybe your christmas present can be a roast potato master class it's been raining [Applause] [Music] yeah yeah okay but it isn't it's not no not wine online no very definitely not it's much better than that this is a cracker raising awareness of birds raptor aid raptor aid i've got it from wrapped array a small but a very effective charity and this is a top present it is an owl pellet dissection yeah and guess what's in the bag got an owl pellet do you have an old pellet yeah yeah yeah oh this is gonna be the best day right that's what i'm gonna be doing for the rest of the time yeah look you've got your little wooden you know picks your wooden picks here you've got your magnifying glass you've got your tweezers um you've got your little sample bottle if your case you know you find anything really really super super super super you've got your bone guard quite cool have a look at this it's got his phone guide for and then you can find in it i love this look wrapped up in silver paper individually wrapped oh it's beautiful thank you very much she got your own little private palette it's your own little private bar now palette look at that yeah thank you yeah that's good to enjoy this towards the charity yes indeed that you can get these online on the raptured website they also do some amazing bird boxes for owls kestrels all those sorts of things got one of those recently yeah going up in the tree behind us here tourneys are out here all the time and they're making a lot of noise i'm hoping to tempt them in tempt them in what about that though come on i did get you another present because i mean i i couldn't just give you a potato well normally that's more than i normally get that's rubbish i'm good at presents i'm good at presents i'm getting presents this is quite a special book okay so i've been out recently filming for winter watch and i met a man who is a wildlife cameraman but he's also an amazing poet an amazing poet he's such a fantastic way with words his name is john keeling and he's written this book a country man's journey um and i have to say some of the poetry in here is honestly hedgehog's common we used to say alas no more this statement make on the step he'd find his milk but nowadays the cats would take a friendly neighbor in the garden eating slugs and aphids there if eggs were taken we'd beg his pardon those were things he would not share but back again to that same old truth the killer man's been on the loose as with osprey peregrine dormouse and many more the little urchin lies upon the floor with ddt and pesticides spread from the ground and the skies little chance insects have of escape and in turn he doth take if past these dangers he doth make and with his lucky life escape there are still dangers near and far of course the man in the motor car isn't it yes it's really good he's got some amazing stuff in there a lot about british wildlife lots of information and he's had the most incredible life um countrymen's journey by john t keeling yeah it's a great book 9.99 yeah i spent a fortune on your president 1999 i also got you a potato what are you complaining about well thank you very much i'll enjoy the poetry yeah it's really gorgeous right people have got christmas to get on with it yes you do we need to wrap this we've also got a few birthdays so i just wanted a wish but you can't forget birthdays around no it's also i wouldn't like to say that but because it's a lot of people's birthdays you want to wish them a very happy birthday i mean yours is quite close to christmas you know and i still managed to get you a present but i can't tell you if you yes exactly that's relatively close to christmas all i can say is that you know had you been born on christmas day or boxing day you know help yourself yeah next year i'm getting you a carrot okay a carrot a carrot all right all right okay birthdays wendy mason was 74 on the 19th of december very happy birthday to you wendy we've got jamie who's twin uh who's 21 on the 20th of december we've got diana's birthday on the 22nd of december she's loved being part of sibc and has since started an access course to study zoology fantastic lovely william yeah i hope it goes well i'm sure it will do keep us posted on that that's really um amy would like to wish her husband lee a wonderful birthday on new year's day he feeds a fox called gherkin every night and since july the son of gherkin has been a regular visitor too i like that that's fantastic stuff it's a great name for fox but a very happy birthday to you yeah and also another new year's eve birthday from barbara who will be on crowd control this christmas day at her local church so happy birthday to everyone and also a very merry christmas very merry christmas indeed now we will be back of course in um in uh yeah new year yeah and we're going to be upgrading some of our technology hoping to bring you some more sort of dynamic ventures yeah inviting all of our young contributors to get out in the field and send us what they see we're looking forward to luke massey's bear and we've been looking forward to luke massey's bear film since um i don't know what june oh early may yeah yeah a while haven't we we'd just like to say a massive thanks to all of those contributors this year who have sent us things for the sibc we couldn't have done it without you of course all of those people have gone out and sent us their video clips or made those films too many to mention here yeah all of those of you who've sent photographs and all those who are active on the sibc website as well it's been a great community it's been great to see all of these people coming together but obviously during these times of lockdown as we find ourselves again now under stress and strife you know where to find that solace and raspberry it's right outside all you've got to do is find your local green space whether it's your garden or that park where you can go safely and safely distance from other people that get in touch with that wildlife and there's plenty of it out there at this time of year oh there's so much is so much yeah absolutely lots to keep you know your eyes peeled and if you can't get outside then watch our live cameras the ones in new york for example give you plenty of joy and improve mental health too just watching things online so there's lots of resources lots of things to do of course it's a really tricky time of year and this year you know it's been a year like no other it's even more difficult probably now more than ever and hoping that you were all staying safe and kind of connecting with one another like you have been all throughout the year and having a very happy and safe christmas indeed and we're going to sign off by saying that if you enjoy nature writing our former spring watch producer birder and author
