in today's video we are exhaustively testing the tap test on soda cans does it actually work and is there a method that works best hey everyone if you haven't heard we've got a handful of our old project build kits up for sale in our shop one of these kits is the spy scope which lets you turn your cell phone into a powerful microscope you can also get some special challenge slides that will conceal a secret URL which will lead you to a hidden video so if you haven't checked them out yet go down into the description to take a look all right guys we've got a lot of soda and not too long ago we did a video about dissolving the outside of a can of soda using something very caustic took away the metal left behind the plastic it was very cool if you haven't seen you should go check it out but in that video while some things were dissolving we did a quick test to see if tapping on the top of a can will make it not explode when you've shaken the can up and the results that we got were that it really made no difference at all we just sort of perhaps on the top and that's what I had always heard it's supposed to make it settle but in the comments we had a lot of people saying no no what you need to do is gently tap the outside the side of the can because that knocks bubbles off of the side of the can I've heard some comments that talked about tapping the bottom some people said you had to flick it there was like it was a comment war on this like it wasn't even about the video but that was like 90% of the comments was you did it wrong here's the basic idea we have seven different types of soda in various containers we want to see if there is a best method for tapping on your soda to remove the bubbles or if there is a method that just doesn't work so we are going to test that a little bit more and we're going to set up a few standards by which we will abide to to make official tests of how we're going to do all these things so we're going to come up with sort of a standard amount of shaken mists from the cans we even have a professional pneumatic paint shaker and we're going to try putting of soda cans in this because it shakes very aggressively they might just explode in here lots of types of soda so for defective cans we've got root beer you got sprite we've got coke we've even got an energy drink because I just want to see what might happen if they're gonna react any differently and then for the opening what we're actually gonna do is we're gonna hold them at an angle and we're gonna use this little lip at the bottom we're gonna hold them at that angle so it's consistent and we're gonna open them as fast as we can this direction so you know whatever explodes we're gonna have some volume of the soda spilling out then to see which one exploded least or the most we're going to pour what's left in the can into a clear cup so we can have those side by side and see which can lost more liquid all right all right we've got a coke can in our paint shaker everything is hooked up and ready to go there's no way this could end in disaster knit on and see how much you can just you can shake up a can of soda nice also exactly 20 sorry Bart Simpson it's not bouncing and jumping [Music] nice so much fun I do think that the angle thing we may have to change on that because I think it is just pouring out to the tilted angle I think we have to abandon the tilts and just go for the straight up and down alright ok 3 2 1 I lost a little not a lot very nervous about this one west nervous about this one maybe do a little bit more a little okay I think root beer is our phoniest you got sprayed so because root beer gave us the most explosive results I think all of our tests should be done with the root beer to see what can calm it down the most I think let's see if you can see an actual like visible difference in the amount that we have right here actually the sprite is the lowest did that particular sprite can come with one cubic centimeter less liquid in it and it's not like we can open them pour them out before we tried the experiment because you need the fields man I want to just open this one this one hasn't been shaken it's just been sitting in a box and then I fairly gently carried it over here so I'm just curious what's gonna happen to it if I just open it the same way so foam came up onto the can but there's no spray yeah nothing escapes the lipid began so there is a difference clearly so now I think we need to start doing our test maybe 20 seconds of shaking and then you can try the tap top again I can try the side tap the way they're asking maybe a couple of varieties I've heard the bottom clicking the bottom of the bottom yep you guys were very upset that we did not exhaustively justice we're gonna you're going to test the heck out go okay I'm not looking forward to this it definitely overflowed way more than our can that had not been shaken which was none so there is another thing that I want to test while you're doing that a testing if I just take this unshaken can and give it just one shake how does that compare to our paint pan that should more that looked like at least as much foam pouring out to me you may have less than I do it's possible uh I think I did have a couple seconds less between stopping shaking and opening all right so now let me just start shaking things thirty seconds in the paint shaker and then try all of our tests to see what's gonna actually help first of all I want to do is shake it up but then just let it sit for thirty seconds before we open it not touching it not tapping it not doing anything manipulating in any way just waiting 30 seconds three to one I did it made a difference it yeah it was definitely still more foam than non agitated but it was definitely less than the one where we just shook it in the paint cane and open it immediately so waiting did something but it did not restore it all the way let's do our tap on the top test so let's do a top aside and a bottom tap the top for 10 seconds or something I am covered in root beer all right 30 seconds side just for about 10 just try and get all the way around and knock all the bubbles off a little less everybody has such a strong opinion on this and it's a very serious opinion like no it must be done this way so we're trying them all but the results are kind of showing that may not even be necessary about 10 seconds 3 2 1 well I looked about the same as the other two tapping tests yeah not shaken just a still can of soda we just opened it then this one we gave one solid shake just up and down opened it right away this one we shook in the paint shaker and then just opened right away paint shaker we waited 30 seconds to open it paint shaker we tap the side for about 10 seconds paint shaker we tapped to the top for about 10 seconds and paint shaker we topped the bottom for about 10 seconds the main thing that I'm taking is the one that we did nothing too just took it out and open it obviously has the most fullest and the one that you just shook once and then open immediately this has the lowest yeah it's probably a quarter inch below pretty much everything else like below the lowest mark in the cup whereas most of them are like at that mark I'm gonna go ahead and say that any sort of method of just like generally agitating it after a drop is gonna help a little bit especially if we compare it to that one shake and open that you did because that obviously you know is the most explosive yeah that's lost the most foam so far so one heavy shape seems to upset it more than just being shaking constantly for 30 seconds so I want you to try something I want you to take we have exactly one cam left right yes maybe if you shook it really really hard and then tapped it on the side see if that makes any difference from the one shake so do a one shake tap all over it a little bit and see if it's different than your one shake but only do it for a few seconds [Music] Wow it's quite a good spill those look pretty much the same there might be like an extra millimeter the difference is so little like it spills out and tapping the sides generally do much I really didn't but what we are seeing here is that just agitating it so if your soda is sitting in your car if you're carrying it from your car to a barbecue or something just jostling it around you're not losing that much maybe a tablespoon of liquid is what I'm thinking here hold on your hand your hand is gonna get nice and sticky I know in the comments you guys would be like oh but you still did it wrong so if there's still something here that we're missing you can let us know you've got a scale this is our completely full nothing spilled out can we're gonna get 384 grams now with our one big shake that we opened immediately we're down to 337 grams so that's 47 grams lost to our one big shake just waiting 30 seconds 375 grams so we've only lost 9 grams of liquid by just waiting on the bottom 373 so it's sort of between 373 and 374 371 with the side taps so we lost more with that so hey that might be worse than the bottoms 1/2 top tap 368 where the bottom tap actually lost the most so that's showing bottom tap work to battle well it worked the best of the tapping waiting 30 seconds we have 2 grams more than any of the tapping waiting 30 seconds is deafening so this should be the one big shake but then not happening on all sides yeah 346 so clearly lost a lot but again the big shake seems to make it lose a lot more than the rest of the shaking paint shaker know most educated you can get how bizarre I wonder if that's the same with with sprite and the diet coke should we try a big shake with those and see if it loses more than the shaker nice alright that was not shaken and we saw that the sprite was not the phoniest so that's not terribly surprising nothing escaped onto the ground all of it stayed in or a tiny bit on top of the can but nothing lost now we're gonna do one big shake Wow quite a bit more gone so this would be like you're at a barbecue you go to pick it up out the cooler but it's covered in water so you just drop it Oh crud whoo that fountain now that could also because the candy forms so it's physically pushing on it more it's now we're gonna do about 30 seconds in the paint shaker nice [Music] that was that was less than the one that wasn't shaken at all like nothing even came up on to the top the one we didn't shake there was a little bit of foam it didn't go anywhere but it foamed this one I opened it and it just like nothing well we've been doing testing and I think we fairly conclusively found that a single large shake does considerably more to shake up a can of soda but even a paint shaker with the sprite it was so severe that the one we put in the paint shaker like seeing the least agitated of all so we're gonna use our Diet Coke and we're going to retest the tapping on the side the top and the bottom and see if one of those seems to settle the soda down more than the other ones first one this one hasn't been shaken it's just been sitting here okay so then this one will be the shake once open immediately no taps ready okay this one I'll shake once and then I'm going to tap the top for ten seconds [Music] I had a hard time opening that but also quite a mess this one I'll tap the bottom I don't know that shake was a big [Music] oh my gosh just waiting 30 seconds works so much better than tapping get these on the scale the best of course is no change where we didn't shake it nothing spilled out that was at 372 waiting 30 seconds we only lost two grams of sort of barely anything poured out tapping it on the bottom we lost 14 grams tapping it on the side we lost 23 grams tapping it on the top we lost 26 grams and giving it one big shake and then opening it immediately we by far lost the most we lost 34 grams so in terms of tapping bottom where it's best than the sides than the top so people were right to tell us that we were doing the bad happiness we're just happy the top I think the most surprising thing we've learned today is that the pink Shaker does not actually make a can of soda as much as just one shape that was completely counterintuitive to me I would definitely have thought this would shake it more but maybe the agitation is just like mixing the carbon dioxide back in let's see how much explosion we get by just shaking a red bowl OneCard red bowl shape just watch this one hit the ceiling oh my goodness well that's 30 seconds looks very shaken now what do we do with it where's your machete we've got some throwing stars and we're gonna try and throw them at our soda bottle see if we can pop our soda bottle we're very bad at this we are but we're not gonna let that stop us that ruptured open so Nate would you recommend the tapping a bottle for somebody if they've got a soda no not particularly I'd say just wait for half a minute maybe even a whole minute you know yes the tapping works a little bit but honestly just waiting that's gonna work better Oh possibly even maybe go well guys that's not all you know we've always got more for you to see hit that box up at the top and we'll see you the next one talk to you then [Music]
