[Music] what's up guys welcome and welcome back to my channel if you're new here i'm recipe and i'm a recess associate working in biotech if you've seen my past videos and you know that i have a bachelor's of science in biology and i've been working the lab for the past two and a half years now i kind of just happened to fall into this career field like after the fact and so knowing what i know now and based on my career i wanted to answer the question would i recommend a biology degree my answer may surprise you so keep on watching to find out before we get to this video don't forget to subscribe to my channel and hit the notification bell so you don't miss any videos like this also if you feel so inclined give this video a thumbs up below and leave a comment letting me know anything you'd like for me to cover on my channel and lastly if you're looking for like a resume template information about the astp or anything related to the lab don't forget to check out my laboratory guide which i will have linked down below in the description box now that that's out of the way let's get to the video so for my bachelor's i went to the university of maryland college park and i major in biological sciences the requirements for this degree fall into two overarching categories general and advanced and then under these you have subcategories so starting with general you have the basic program requirements that include your intro biology courses like ecology cell bio and your intro lab courses in the supporting courses category you have various math classes intro to chem physics courses as well as more lab courses for the science classes and the last subcategory and the general section is the gen ed classes so that includes things like your english 101 professional science writing history classes humanities diversities et cetera et cetera once you've completed everything under the general category of about 74-75 credits you can move on to the advanced classes or the advanced category which are all advanced science courses kind of like electives because there's so many of them to choose from and totally you'll be choosing about 27 credits and this can come from a range of classes including biochemistry genetics animal behavior immunology and lots more one of the classes i took and my advanced portion of my degree was the biology of extinct animals along with the lab to go with it and that was one of my favorite classes that i took throughout my four years in college it was so interesting and so like different and fun so that was one of the classes that i really enjoy and that is like the good part about the like advanced science electives is that you can like choose any science class that you want there are a little bit of more subcategories under like the advanced science elective portions of it but for the most part you can choose like basically whatever you want so besides the category of the gen ed classes this degree is comprised of tons of science classes along with labs to go with them so now to answer the question of would i recommend getting a biology degree i would say biology degree is best suited for those who want to go on the pre-med route or the route of an educator there's not like a plethora of jobs to someone as a new grad with just a bachelor's degree in biology most of the times you have to see continued education whether that's a master's in biology another science continuing to med school or any other health care field yes you can find other science related jobs like i did but i say this in a lot of my videos that it is a ton more work to do so but it's definitely not impossible i personally find that the degree is like so general it's hard to jump start a career with just a bachelor's in biology alone but that's just my opinion if i could go back i likely wouldn't get a biology degree even though biology is still my favorite topic i would do something a bit more like specialized or more specific or direct because i do feel that biology itself is just so broad i guess you can say that like i said finding a job right after college in a new graph with gesture biology are just your bachelor's in biology it's super rare super hard to find you can't find them but they're not probably like the best paying jobs you know are doing exactly what you want to do so yeah overall i wouldn't recommend a biology degree whether you want to come into the lab or not i just don't recommend a biology degree at all i don't think it's a good degree to be completely honest but if you are going to like i said med school and you know for sure that's what you want to do i was in the pre-med track when i first started college and then changed my mind so if you are certain that you want to do biology i mean sorry go to pre-med then sure however even then i still recommend a different degree besides biology if you're going to pre-med but again that's like a different video for a different day and like i said that's just my opinion i hope this video gave you just a tad bit of insight of my thoughts on a biology degree and gave you some things to consider if you're thinking about majoring in biology also if you like this video let me know down below in the comments don't forget to like this video and subscribe as well i'll talk to you guys in my next video until next time bye guys [Music] you
