Should you Buy The Meta Quest 3?

equestry has finally been revealed all the cards are on the table with the AMA from Buzz answering more of our Quest 3 queries to more gameplay from Zuck showing us the capabilities of their new VR device whether you're new to VR owner Quest 1 2 or Pro the time has come yet again with this new generation to ask the question should you buy the metaquester so I feel like the best way to do this is step by step compare the specs and features of each of the headsets starting with resolution to start the quest 3 we'll be using pancake lenses which is a step above both the quest 1 and 2. the pro does feature pancake lenses and from my experience they provide a night and day Improvement you get a real sense of clarity when looking through them and the only determining factor in terms of image quality comes from the panel resolution The Quest 2 and pro do have similar resolution in terms of pixel density but thankfully the quest 3 will have a resolution of 2064 by 2208 compared to the previous resolution of 1832 by 1920 and this in Zuckerberg's own words coming from the most recent Lex Friedman podcast provides a 40 sharper screen you can also expect 120 hertz refresh rate out of the box which is an improvement over the Pro's current refresh rate of 90 Hertz in terms of resolution it's clear that the quest 3 is the current winner but in saying that the pro does have excellent local dimming and the original Quest still has that OLED panel for those incredible blacks but the quest 3 is a clear upgrade unfortunately the field of view will be the same as the quest 2. as per the AMA from boss now on to Features the quest 1 and 2 represent the first stage in development of VR headsets and from the pro onwards represents what's called VR 2.0 or mixed reality and that's the introduction of color mixed reality just to give you an idea what this looks like here's a short clip of the quest 3 in action this is Quest 3 our most advanced headset yet it's got high resolution color mixed reality it's got a lot better displays and a lot more experiences Pro your pretty familiar with some of these features it's clearly an upgrade from the blurry grayscale pass-through of the quest 1 and 2 but something I find interesting and slightly annoying was when Boz was asked if the quest series mixed reality would be better than the pros the quest 3 is better in mixed reality and the reason for that is we have two higher resolution color cameras on the quest 3. um to my last answer initially with the quest Pro we had this other vision of how we would colorize that we felt was okay but it wasn't as good as what we ended up landing on there so Quest Pro still has great mixed reality uh still has great access to the presence platform but it will be slightly improved on Quest 3 from a prison's platform standpoint and dramatically improved in terms of the user experience of the clarity that you get of your surroundings now the reason I'm slightly annoyed is because a lot of you have paid three times your mic for the quest Pro then the quest 3 will cost and while I understand the technology moves fast it just seems like the pro was a testing grounds for mixed reality but in saying that I was left slightly disappointed with the pros pass through it was noticeably grainy and this was most probably due to the lack of that depth sensor to give a good comparison the Bloomberg Hands-On report from the quest 3 describes the difference between the pro and the three is being able to read text on your phone so it's a clear Improvement in Clarity but let's be honest this is only interesting to those interest in mixed reality most of you I'm guessing are interested in VR so this extra 2.0 feature could be no more than a gimmick to you but as for the pro it looks like the only good thing to come out from it are the camera track controllers face and eye tracking which are the three features you won't be getting from the quest 3 and that's my next Point controllers the quest 3 marks the transition to a new type of hybrid tracking as explained in boz's ama this is the question I've gotten the most frequently I love it um so the or going back to the original Oculus touch controllers the ring on the outside is covered in a constellation of LEDs in a specific pattern that allowed the computer vision on the Inside Out headsets to track the controllers in space and what we so the new controllers that we have still have infrared LEDs on them in a constellation that you can't see because you can't see infrared light but the the cameras that we have on the headset can see however they also are going to be in positions where many of those LEDs are occluded and so we have fused the computer version we were using for constellation tracking with our hand models so the hand tracking is also going to kind of running at the same time and so we have a model of your hand uh that tells us where the controller is in conjunction with all the tricks we've been using for a long time using Imus and smoothing to fill in gaps they work really well but I'll definitely be interested to see how this compares to both the quest Pro and the quest 1 and 2's tracking I would make the assumption that the quest Pros controllers will remain Superior as they do their tracking independently but time will tell on this one but coming from the pro controllers and the shape and ergonomics are hands down an improvement which is something you can expect from the quest 3. now on to what I'd consider the most important factor in buying a new VR and at the time meta reported it provided double the power over the quest 2. but if I'm honest this isn't really noticeable because the quest Pro is capped at 90 Hertz the quest 3 will be using qualcomm's Next Generation chipsets the xr2 Gen 2 which again according to meta provides double the computational power over the quest 2. so it begs the question which is better and well Boz answered this question in his AMA it does depend a little bit about what you care about for the most part I think the answer is going to be yes the quest 3 has a lot more processing and thermal space than even the quest Pro does and still has a lot of the great features that we wanted to introduce including things like mixed reality which I think will be more important to a set of games that come in the future having said that if you are somebody who plays games in Worlds where face and eye movement is really useful because you're playing Cooperative games or you're playing in in Social spaces um the face and eye tracking that you get in the quest Pro might be the differentiating feature that you really need I also personally love the open periphery design of the quest Pro so it really depends a little bit on your preferences but I think the general answer is is yeah Quest 3 is uh just gonna be a tremendous headset for gamers now again this is kind of good and bad good for those who are looking to upgrade from the quest 201 but not so good for those who Fork tight for the pro the direction they went with the pro was a mixed reality for a work environment and it turns out the quest 3 will provide more clarity in that area too so it does make you wonder if the only reason the pro exists was just to cut manufacturing costs for the quest 3 either way it seems the quest 3 is an improvement over every headset but it really boils down to what you use it for pcpr users really won't see much of these benefits and I'd personally wait to see what valve have up their sleeve if you're primarily a pcvr user but for those who enjoy Standalone the quest 3 is a clear winner over all three headsets and at a price of 499 it's definitely in the mass consumer range the only part I'm
