duramax powerstroke cummins which is better guys if you watched that last video you guys saw that i was stranded in the colorado mountains i was actually delivering a giveaway truck from the state of michigan all the way to nevada it was about a 32-hour drive most of you guys saw that video but i wanted to make this video because it's a really hot topic and not only that reading through some of your guys's comments i have to answer some questions but what actually happened back there i mean i was traveling from michigan 32 hours okay that's one way to nevada i didn't even make it halfway back i got into colorado and the dpf completely plugged up the truck wouldn't even start as a matter of fact the exhaust wasn't even coming out of the tailpipe you guys can see here in the topic of the video will i ever purchase a new truck a brand new diesel so i'm gonna answer that very question here in this video but if it's your first time stopping by definitely consider subscribing if you guys love truck builds truck content or you just love diesel trucks or trucks in general this is what i'm all about i give information i test out products see if it works see if it doesn't and i'll let you know either way what my opinion is on those here's a story really quick the truck that i ran the giveaway with a couple months ago you know of course we already delivered that i bought that truck specifically because it was sort of newer it was an 07.5 or an 08 if you will and it was a little bit newer than of course the truck you see right behind me this was the truck that i had i started the channel with i built it to this craziness right here i mean pretty much to the t it's my daily driver i didn't want to go crazy like a thousand horsepower but i wanted to throw this normal stuff that you would see like a lift pump manifolds turbo you know piping kit stuff like that never had a real problem with any of those products you know the transmission's built rear end transfer case i mean the works i not saying i'm tapped out on this vehicle but it's definitely a really cool ride i had some issues with it for example the transmission cooler lines blowing i had to get the truck towed just a few little minor things but since the truck is older i decided to buy a newer diesel i mean i just wanted something newer i've been using this truck to pull a trailer i've been picking up diesel trucks of course moving them back and forth on my 14k trailer never had a huge problem on the road with the exception of that one time when i was picking up the 08 and i blew a return line years ago i made a video on this but the drive shaft just worked its way loose from the rim but overall i've never had a real problem with the transmission the emissions stuff the engine stuff like that the hard parts i've just never had a problem with it but i just thought it would be a good idea to get something newer after building up the newer diesel truck i decided to just give it away i wanted something even newer i wanted to sort of step my game up last year i picked up a 2018 gmc denali i wanted the best of the best and i was actually going out researching i test drove the power stroke and the cummins as well yeah i'm a little biased it's a gm product only because i know it better i know how to work on them and if there was any warranty issues i couldn't get past i can fix it on my own i have years of experience working on these vehicles so you know to me it's just a no-brainer during my hunt looking at other trucks you guys are probably going to kill me for this but i don't care it's just my preference when i drove the power stroke and i drove the cummins in my opinion i just loved the denali because i had the bells and whistles it was the most comfortable ride and guys when you got on it it went man okay you ready [Music] i there's just a lot more acceleration with these trucks you know stock for stock and the ford and the dodge they're just dogs compared to these gm trucks but it was sort of a no-brainer when i picked it up but i just wanted for reliability now if you watched that last video like we talked about i was stranded i slept on a park bench for two days luckily i had my brother to help me out and then we had some friends that came up and rescued us long story short i paid two thousand dollars to a hot shot trucker to move that truck from colorado all the way to wisconsin where my buddy ryan at ryan's diesel service squared me away we removed the exhaust and lo and behold this is what we found the emissions blocked up my dpf my diesel particulate filter so much what i mean by emissions is the soot level the soot grams all the unburnt fuel that black smoke that's harnessed in that canister basically backed me up and went through my turbo blew my intercooler boot it was just a bad deal i mean guys this is so frustrating because older truck i wanted to get something newer for reliability i wanted to keep it emissions attacked you know throw a couple things like a manifold you know downpipe stuff like that nothing that would really affect anything but i did put a tuner on it if you guys don't know i've been working on these trucks for several years i know it works and what doesn't but i wasn't too keen on what works on a emissions compliant newer diesel engine on these medium light duty pickup trucks for example the duramax power stroke and cummins decided to go ahead and play around with it and let's be honest guys you put a tuner on this thing no matter what brand it is it's gonna mess with the mapping a little bit and it's gonna tell the computer to do certain things it's not programmed by the factory so these things may help with mpg which i personally noticed it actually increased my mpg it helped me with my towing and let's just be honest guys it's a rip no matter what brand the tuning may be if it's emissions intact still going to ramp up the fuel and harness some of that unburnt fuel into your dpf or the soot level or the grams and it's going to plug it up eventually you're going to see a case where your truck may go into regen more than normal and that's sort of what i've learned i think it's really a tuning issue and the only reason why i say that is because i noticed when i bought the truck initially noticed the truck would go into regen more than normal so i kind of just brushed that one off don't get me wrong throwing different parts at a newer diesel truck probably would contribute to that but i don't think that was actually the cause of why i broke down i brought it to ryan's diesel service we removed the exhaust i didn't cut it i didn't do anything crazy like that because i wanted to reuse it if i ended up cutting that exhaust pipe they ended up paying thousands for a brand new exhaust system you know the dpf all that stuff that goes with it the muffler the scr like everything i would have had to have replaced so i wanted to keep it all intact at the moment ryan and the team were absolutely awesome they were actually able to get that stuff baked out cleaned up they actually removed and replaced the def sensor and there was a melted wiring harness which i didn't get on camera i should have but all that stuff right there was defective it wasn't allowing it to regen but after they got all that squared away and put the exhaust back up and got everything back to factory i was good to go and even now i'm good to go as a matter of fact the highest that i saw on the way back from wisconsin to michigan which is about a seven hour trip 25 mpg which was my best my worst was 18. for some of you guys that said you should have got a ford you should have got a dodge i mean let's be honest here for most of you guys that own these newer vehicles you all know that they all have the same garbage on them they have all the same emissions crap on there we all know in the back of our mind if we don't remove this stuff and tune it and get it rid of it it's going to eventually come back they all have their issues they have their weaknesses and their strengths you know what some of you guys are right because i really was considering the 67 liter power stroke they're actually dubbed the most reliable diesel engine on the market today the newer stuff i guess the biggest question is should i delete it you know should i do this and that but i mean you know i got a channel people are watching me i don't want to get caught up in that i do own a fleet of diesels and of course i have the cummins you guys know i have the power stroke so i have all three brands they are older trucks like for example the commons the 24 valve 99 it's actually p-pumped it's mechanical none of the emissions regulated garbage is actually on that engine the thing breathes freely and i think it's going to last a very long time like i said the denali was a reliable piece for me i mean i bought a newer diesel 68 000 at the dealership it was used of course it wasn't brand new the newer ones are going for about a hundred thousand which i'm just not gonna fork out the money for and with the way the market is i was sort of at the mercy of the market so that's why i paid so much for it you know pre-2020 i think that that thing would have been way less but it is what it is at this point answer some of those questions you guys are saying you should have deleted it you know i kind of hit on that here already but you need to understand something to delete a duramax and what i mean by deleting is removing the emission system completely straight piping it unplugging all the little wiring harnesses that go to the egr cooler the egr valve and throwing a modified ecu or engine control module in the engine to basically fool it thinking that it has the stuff on there remapping everything and not actually worrying about using diesel exhaust fluid there's just a lot of things you don't have to worry about none of that it's less problematic but the real story of course on that is you're gonna end up spending five to ten thousand dollars depending on what you're trying to do in order to remove those emissions and it's illegal lots of eyes are seeing it you don't wanna get caught up especially for some of you guys that have states where you run emissions checks for example like some parts of ohio pennsylvania california also i didn't want to delete it because i wanted to see what an emissions intact diesel truck will actually do is it really that reliable and if i take care of the emissions systems and i keep an eye on things will it treat me good there was a few things that i didn't know that i shared in the last video for example the edge cts-3 monitor which is awesome by the way i was able to monitor my soot grabs which ryan told me to look at when i started initially having problems once the exhaust grams get to a certain level that means that your dpf is starting to plug up with some of that that unburnt fuel that's being harnessed in that canister and you need to force that thing in the regen which means to jack up those exhaust gas temperatures to a certain level in order to spit that stuff out of course clean but to break all that stuff up in your exhaust that way you don't have an issue after thinking about it now that i'm home and i'm safe and i'm not sleeping on a park bench now and i'm not stranded and i'm not spending thousands of dollars to get my truck home and fixed and all this extra stuff it makes me wonder and i have that question in my mind would i ever go back to buying a newer diesel as far as i'm concerned all red would have probably treated me better than oh i know for sure it would have i wouldn't had all these issues and also here's the kicker this is kind of interesting the hot shot trucker that i paid to move my truck from colorado to wisconsin as you guys can see in this video the guy's driving a gas truck i did have a discussion with him he told me that it pulls like a dream the only problem that he doesn't like is that the mpgs are so low i mean yeah the thing isn't going to be very torquey and you're not going to get the best fuel economy but it's sort of a trade-off because owning a diesel is very expensive repairs are very expensive with the expensive diesel filters that go on on those diesel engines of course the diesel oil you guys have to use exhaust fluid to break up some of that soot that's inside of the exhaust canister there's just all kinds of stuff of course you're gonna have injector problems depending on what truck you own you may have transmission issues one thing i like about gas trucks especially the three-quarter tons is you just start them and you go now don't get me wrong guys i'm not selling out i'm not saying that i'm gonna ditch all my diesel trucks and just buy a gasser i always say but it's sort of like the old muscle cars back in the 60s and 70s if you think about it nowadays you get to hear that engine it just sounds cool it's a lot of fun very powerful it'll put you right in your seat it's just very satisfying to drive that's kind of the big thing it's more of a hobby it's a lot of fun to you know play with these trucks and have fun with them and test them but you guys can be rest assured it wasn't the duramax diesel itself it was the emissions craft that's on it that's what left me stranded but given the issues that i have and now that we fixed it and now that it's home and it runs perfect no issues there's always going to be that question in the back of my mind will it happen again at this point guys the truck has returned back to stock and i'm going to leave it that way i'm still going to pull my 35 foot gooseneck trailer i'm still going to travel the country with it of course picking up loads bringing them back or just doing gigs here and there i'm going to do it and i'm going to document everything guys make sure you subscribe though if you haven't already because if anything happens again i'm definitely going to be videoing this now with a price tag of 68 000 have i considered just selling it and getting an another older diesel for reliability i'm just going to be chasing my tail so no i'm going to keep the truck okay i'm going to do a better job at keeping an eye on the soot grams if i continue to do that i don't think i'll have a problem and of course using high quality diesel exhaust fluid and it's kind of hard to do this one but just make sure that you have quality fuel and use some of that injector cleaner but i'm gonna keep a better eye on this truck than normal than what i used to for me to do it all over again sell the truck maybe get a ford or a dodge i'm probably gonna be in the same boat that's kind of where i'm getting at so yeah i have the newer diesel but would i buy a new diesel after these issues absolutely not no way i think i'm gonna go ahead and stick with the old stuff and if i'm a hot shot trucker and maybe not doing it all the time but you know here and there i'm gonna want a gas truck at this point i don't want to deal with any more of those crazy issues i know there's going to be a lot of uneducated comments down below or even some constructive or just mean comments and that's fine i love reading it matter of fact i just read one comment it was kind of funny some guy had a toyota i guess his dad bought him a brand new one and it's electric ev and he said that he cannot pull any diesel or something like that a lot of you guys are just saying shut up and just delete the truck well you know that's true too easier said than done if i do that i have a lot of eyes watching me on the youtube channel i don't want to get caught up with the epa which they're the ones that started this whole deal with emissions i don't think that your race car or your race diesel truck or just rolling coal down the street is going to harm the environment as bad as some of these other businesses but they have deep pockets right if you guys want me to do a full youtube video on it i absolutely will you're basically introducing your exhaust into the combustion chamber for a second burn so you're re-circulating that through your engine and then it's going through you know your egr valve your egr cooler of course your catalytic converter not in these orders but you know you have your diesel particulate filter which is where it's harnessed and then you have a diesel exhaust fluid which is supposed to soften that stuff up break it up and then at that point your engine is supposed to go into a regen mode now over time that's going to destroy the longevity of your diesel engine and no matter how new that truck is it's going to build up soot it's going to build up your turbo your y-bridge your intercooler pipes stuff like that we all know that these diesel engines will last a very long time as a matter of fact over well over a million miles if you keep up with the maintenance and everything and that's exactly what chokes the life out of these diesel engines and just makes them unreliable some people are getting lucky with their newer diesels where they're getting four 500 000 i've even seen up to a million completely stock no issues it may be the luck of the draw you know in a lot of cases guys are having so many issues where they're taking their trucks back to the dealership more than once multiple times a lot of the cause of their trucks is the emission systems not trying to freak you guys out this is more of a heads up just from my experience just keep an eye on the stuff for example like i said the soot grams make sure that they don't exceed you know like 100 90 you know pull over regen the truck make sure you're good to go if i would have done that more often when i was on this trip i would have no issues the truck would still be good right now but given that i blew the intercooler boot on the highway and then i had to limp the truck with a 35-foot gooseneck on the back to the next exit which luckily was only a mile away i think that's what did that truck in remember a couple years ago we purchased a 2004 gmc 2500 hd with the 66 liter in it it had 400 000 miles on it we've restored it from the ground up and we paid about 50 i think it was about 52 000 to do everything i'm talking every nut and bolt just to make it brand new again i guarantee you that truck would have more longevity than my newer gmc denali to sum this whole video up i'm not buying a new diesel i'm going to stick with what i have and hope to god this doesn't happen again if they start lessening the laws on what we can do to our own vehicles that we spend our hard earned money on then i am most definitely going to delete that l5p but again keep that dialogue going we want to learn from each other that's why i have this channel and hey if you want to support the channel i'll leave a link in the description it's truckmasterdiesel.com i sell diesel parts t-shirts key tags hats stickers whatever but big thanks to everybody that supports the channel i really do appreciate it and also let me know in the comments if you haven't already bought a newer diesel would you buy one now after what you heard today i just i'm curious i'm not trying to scare you guys again i'm just trying to let you know what i've dealt with and what my plans are when moving forward with my diesel hobby but that's it we'll see on the next one stay tuned hey what is up so here i am in eagle colorado the same place that we broke down in the durmax i am here with my silverado the 1500 the gas truck and i just thought it would be cool to show i just came from las vegas area just like uh just like you did josh and uh the gas truck did really good over the mountains and carrying this car on the back this is my new 1962 pontiac temptus convertible so anyways thought i'd share here we are same place you broke down headed back to my house in colorado from the same place you left gas vehicle doing good just thought i'd give you a little video on that peace out
