hi everybody it's precious pioneer and welcome back to my youtube channel the channel we talk about food and lifestyle and sometimes entrepreneurship and i know a lot of you have followed me because of my cookie business uh video and so i've gotten a lot of different questions over the past couple of months um related to that and so i wanted to just answer the question on whether or not it's worth it to go ahead and start a cookie business especially during this time and i'm here to tell you yes of course yes i think it's definitely worth it still to this day and i'll go into the reasons why if you're curious if you have never started if you have started already and don't know where to go this video is just gonna cover why you should keep going why you should get started um even in 2020 2021 i think it's just such a great business venture especially if you're new to entrepreneurship or you're passionate about baking or if you're looking for a side hustle to get started or if you want to grow it into a big storefront with your family and everybody else it's just a really great thing to get started in and so i'm here to help you with that if you're new to my channel welcome um don't forget to hit that subscribe button below that really helps to support me in the creation of these videos um but without further ado let's jump in so like i said a little bit earlier it is the perfect having your own small bakery whether that you're selling um cookies or baked goods um such as bread loaves or cakes and things like that it's the perfect thing to get started because the startup cost is very small and there's a lot of room for trial and error i think it's a great um business to get started just as a side hustle to make some extra money um each month uh it can range from like 200 to like 500 each depending on your location um and where you're selling whether you're selling online you have a bigger opportunity but if you show up on certain markets i don't know how cove it is but i think social distancing and things like that you're able to get more income that way taking orders for celebrations such as like birthdays events hooking up with different businesses like if they're throwing a promotional party or something like that is a really good idea contacting your local businesses for that sort of thing uh catering i think is a really great thing facebook marketplace is one of the biggest our facebook in general is a really great way to sell online baked goods and it's a perfect thing because you can start off by selling to your friends your neighbors co-workers and then you're able to get a lot of good feedback and then once you develop your recipe you learn the business in the back end it's a really great thing to start because then you can take that and grow it into whatever you want it to be you can have your own storefront um your own bakery you can sell wholesale and individual packages and bring them to big grocery stores such as lidl aldi whole foods publix wherever you're located h-e-b and have a partnership with them and sell your cookies through them or local smoothie shops you know when you go get a smoothie there's always like a kiosk with different like healthy snacks or bars or cookies or whatever you can throw your stuff up there and you just have to get really creative when you're a small business and the thing about small businesses is that oftentimes you actually have a leg up in many ways because i think a lot of people are looking for niche markets and looking for something that makes you stand out something that makes you unique and you being small like hey i'm a local business in this specific city like i live in dover delaware like dover's very tiny and so if i had my own bakery it would be kind of a big deal in this area and depending where you are you can have your own niche market whether you're selling vegan products or you're selling the most beautiful products and i think finding your own uniqueness is the key to winning that sort of market if you're starting from home i can't i cannot stress that enough because as much as i can make cookies and sell them my neighbor can make cookies and sell them your co-workers can make cookies and sell them but finding your unique twist on starting your cookie company or business is honestly the biggest element that you need to stand out and to be successful that and your margins and so i think any mom or i think a lot of i'm not trying to categorize you here but like a lot of people who start from home with their own bakery um usually don't know like the business or entrepreneurship side of that and so when you start off small there is some room for air and you really need to know a lot about your inventory your margins how much things will cost and you're only going to learn that through trial and error and so when you buy your flour your eggs your sugar chocolate chips baking soda butter and you combine that um let's say it's like 50 or whatever it may be and you can make two dozen 24 cookies with that you need to know how much each individual cookie will cost given all of the cost of all of your ingredients and you have to consider your labor the time that you're putting into it so if it takes you like two hours to make each batch of cookies you want to have all of that into consideration you want to consider your energy and your power because your oven heat is not free so you want to consider that as well you want to consider the cost of your packaging and you can stand out in many ways that are relevant to that so if you're sticking out in like eco-friendly packaging you want to keep that in mind at how much that will cost but you're only going to learn that through trial and error and if anything like starting a cookie business is so great because uh once you learn the business side and you and you start this then you can branch out into other things and learn all the different elements you can hire people to bake certain things and maybe you can hire somebody for marketing because marketing is big nowadays and people really love beautiful photos of your products so keep that in mind as well and also when you're small you really want to take advantage of like the holiday seasons that go around the ones that are coming up are obviously thanksgiving and christmas and so you can be really successful in that way by um just making an instagram page or making a facebook page and asking um your local members in your group what their favorite holiday cookies and holiday desserts are whether that be gingerbread is very popular peppermint chocolate cranberry anything cranberry you know so you want to ask them what their favorite things are and take a survey take a poll and offer to bring little samples into work and so everybody can try and they're like oh you know that's so good like where'd you get them and you can say hey i made them i'm selling holiday cookies on this date and then i'm taking pre-orders and then suddenly you have everybody sign up on how many they want and that's how you can just simply start your business starting your cookie business is so simple and so easy you just have to figure out the math part of it first you know make sure that the cost matches how much all your ingredients your labor all of that make sure that your numbers are correct um because there's nothing like i mean you can do it out of love and that's super great i've done that too i've given so many free cookies in my lifetime but on the same time you're trying to make money you know so you want to make sure that your numbers you're you're getting some it's worth it for you and then also your packaging is important for the holiday season and that's just a really easy way to get started you know it's like the quickest way um to just ask somebody because more than likely they're willing to support you but then also if you have a really great product people just love holiday snacks and help out and they love a delicious a delicious treat you know and so i think that's really good to keep in mind so i think it's still definitely worth it to go ahead and get started it might be a little bit nerve-wracking at first you might be worried if that's how you feel then like i said you can start off with the free sample route like just for marketing purposes like you can give out a free platter to your neighbors around be like hey you know like i'm thinking about starting a business do you want to sample it and then just tell me what you think and then they may say like oh it's a little too sweet or hey there's not enough chocolate in these or they're kind of dry and crumbly and then also you want to test your packaging and see how long your products will last on the counter and they're going to ask for recommendations of like the best way to store it and so you want to have all of these things kind of generally prepared when you're starting and you can give yourself enough time to experiment and see what that process is like but the whole process is kind of fun because you get to pack excuse me you get to pick out your company name and then your logo but i wouldn't worry too much about all of that before getting started with your product because that is the most important thing and you don't need too many to get started you can have just one or two maybe even three different types of cookies to get started so you don't feel stressed with all the different inventory and it makes it really simple and as you grow then you can worry about all those different things like a website and intense branding and all that different stuff you know you can start off really small i think that's the best part of starting a cookie company in this time because you have the free range to make it your own and personalize it and that was my favorite thing about it i just made it my favorite things my favorite flavors and sometimes that's okay too starting a baking business could be the perfect passion project for you so if you're new and you just want to get started and jump in then just try it because you know i think it's the best thing just to go ahead and try and then you can alter it how you like i would definitely look into your cottage food laws if you are baking from home and make sure that they align with your state and regulations there that's really really important there's nothing worse than getting a flat a red flag or anything like that because that will ruin your name and your reputation and those sort of things and red tape squash small businesses like larger companies can definitely handle stuff like that but smaller companies cannot and that's your name on the line so as much as it's really great that everything has your name on it it's not as great when it comes to breaking laws or regulations and especially with covid um going on right now be very careful i would recommend being very open and transparent with your customers and letting them know what exactly you're selling and who you are and different precautions that you have taken given the current environment um i think it's very important to be safe so whether that's through delivery or through uh usps uh systems i would just be very very careful handling that and then being open and honest to let your customers know what you're doing to handle the situation given the current climate because it's definitely safe to bake a given covet and everything just i would let your guests know that you have taken the precautions by whether that be wearing gloves washing your hands excessively and having different systems in place to help regulate that but given everything i definitely still think that you should definitely start a cookie business or bakery business if you're thinking about it because i don't think desserts will ever go out of style and if it's and it's so much fun to get started and to learn about it it's a beautiful process especially if you're just getting started if you have already opened one then yeah you can look at a lot of my other videos on how to grow it how to maintain it how to market how to have different branding to maybe even launch your website online but thank you guys so much for watching this video if you enjoyed it and got any value then go ahead and give this video a thumbs up that really helps just to support me and the creation of these videos and if you have any more questions uh regarding like um cookie businesses or restaurants or food or anything leave a comment below and i always answer and reply to all of your questions but best of luck to you who are starting i wish you all the best and i'll catch you guys next time bye [Applause] [Music] you
