welcome back to the happy camper coming to you from the beautiful mountains of Southwest Montana today we are back at our sponsors dealership here rocky mountain RV and we are going to be reviewing the new XLR 28 DK 5 this little 5th wheel is one of the shortest offerings on the market in a toy hauler 5th wheel with two slide outs and a garage big enough to take almost any UTV on the market this is really an innovative and new floor plan that that is just taking the UTV owner market by storm it's done extremely well for XLR they brought it out last year and have done a lot of really really nice improvements on it here in the in the 2020 model year so we're going to take a look through this you know I'm gonna start with all the technical data I do have the main room slide out slid in and I've got some tape measures down here in the floor so I want to show you exactly the dimensions of the cargo capacity in it and that'll give you an idea of your machines capabilities of fitting into this unit so right down here below me on the floor you're gonna see that the cargo length up here to the kitchen cabinets is going to be right at 17 feet and that is based off of the tape running all the way back I've actually got it up against the rear screen walder so you could pick up a couple inches figure 17 feet is going to be the the length of the cargo in this unit the interesting part to this is it does have this slide out here in the main floor that comes in but you'll notice over here that we don't have any fender wells down this side so we can go right up against that wall over there and the width with the slide-out in you're gonna see right here is right at about 71 inches overall width so that's gonna accommodate most of the side-by-sides on the market and and again a length is generally going to be plenty the width is where you really gotta gotta be beware this little sofa here will fold up against the wall because it just does protrude out of the slide-out just a touch so it'll fold up flat against the wall to gain you back all that extra space in there I'm gonna go ahead and step back here on the slide-out out again the thing with this fifth wheel is it's a tandem axle the fifth wheel itself is going to be one of the shortest of the month I'm gonna go over all the actual particulars on here in just one second of course you slide out your just your standard electric slide outs are gonna be push the hold on the button here and that's gonna run that slide back out but it is amazing the difference it makes in this particular unit for what you're gonna get in the main floor living room here versus a you know fifth we wouldn't have a slide out down here over here conventional bumper tow type trailers that are gonna be in this open living quarters configuration you'll see we got tie-down rings down here on the floor those are extremely heavy duty they are mounted under the framework underneath the flooring very solid very good field of this unit let's take a quick look at the technical data on this unit right back here to to the 28 d k5 the impressive number is gonna be the exterior length overall exterior length of 32 feet eight inches that's gonna be a solid 10 feet shorter than any other garage model fifth wheel on the market that's that's able to accept the large UTV so you're really gaining a lot smaller unit to be able to get back in the back woods be able to get back into that Tiger camp spot still be able to take your big UTV of course the disadvantage is this is an open quarters it doesn't have a garage system and it works completely separate the back and that's the give take on this there's no free lunch in physics sure easier the ground was still thick a big machine we have to make up that room somewhere so that's the interesting number on there 32 32 feet 8 inches overall total length on this particular unit the overall height is going to be 12 foot 10 that's a very common high thrash for these for these toy hauler 15 this might be a little less and than some of your big full stand-up stuff but right in there the unit weighs in unloaded vehicle weight is ten thousand two hundred fifty nine pounds which again that's gonna be three to four thousand less than your dry weight on your big triple axle models with the 14 or 15 foot garage in the back that would take the same machine so you saving a bunch of weight there to your cargo carrying capacity is gonna be sixty six thousand thirty six pounds your hitch weight at 22 95 so you know that puts this thing in a comfortable tow rating for a 3/4 ton pickup that's kind of what they're shooting for with this unit so you don't have to have a big 1 ton or duals or that type of thing to be able to tow this toy hauler your freshwater tank is going to be a hundred and two gallons you're gonna have a great water capacity of 71 oh I'm sorry great water capacity of 80 gallons on this particular unit and then black water capacity of 50 this is it a full wide-body so it's a hundred and two inch full wide-body on this unit as well now we'll take a look through the more more particulars on it get a feel for how it looks how it features work of course in the back here we're looking at the power double bunk system the lower portion here is the is the convertible dinette 6-pack dinette so you can sit three full-sized adults on each side of this and then of course these will make into another in a queen-size bed they're gonna be about sixty inches wide and then probably longer than your standard clean but that's that's about the bed size it's gonna make we do have a coarse little removable tables here in the center that just pop down into the flush form faces down here on the floor the upholstery in here they do it in a in a very nice very easily to clean type of material they did the XLR stitching into the back there this is um it's tight it kind of a vinyl material but it really feels good it's kind of a texture to it the stitching looks really good and it it's nice and heavy duty again this shoot it's going to be used out in the backcountry we want to be easy to clean that's why they're going with this type of book this type of upholstery we do have windows on both sides of the dinette here and then up above on the course the power system we do have the overhead queen bed I'm gonna try to get a little better picture of that and that does have a little ladder up there as well so you can climb up and down and that butt is adjustable you can pin it up against the ceiling up here if you're not using it and you want an additional head space down here at the at the dinette of course both of those just push the button they go right up against the ceiling the lower benches will fold down against the walls to give you additional height in here so if you have a tall machine this again should not be an issue that market changes so so quickly that that we don't you know we never speak in certains with it but you know check check your machines specs against the unit itself most of them this is a fairly new design again coming out last year so it should be able to take almost any UTV on the market if we have something that's that's been modified then you really have to really have to take a look coming up the door sidewall here we do have the two gyro recliners they do have a little table there and then we have this very large picture window here below them right up above that is going to be some storage cabinets in our entertainment center this this unit does come with a TV and kind of a central home home stereo system directly across on the off door wall over here we have our sofa that's mounted into the slide-out we have overhead cabinets that you saw there and then for most in this slide out is going to be our Dometic 8 cubic foot refrigerator that is mounted here storage above and below the refrigerator in there as well coming up closer to the front of the unit through the off door sidewall is going to be our kitchen and you know I get fairly standard you know toy hauler kitchen they've done some things to give it a little more I appeal you'll notice your upper cabinets are in a very light color I would almost call it a buttercream type of cabinet color and then down below here on the base cabinets they're done in a very dark almost a walnut type of wood color so it's a nice it's a nice contrast the lower cabinets do you have of course the solid surface tops counter tops your madam and they're very light color and that is going to not show you scratches that type things some true solid surface so if you got a nick or a scratch you can you can buff that out on this countertop but it's a big job you know it's much better to have the lighter color than the than the very dark ones that showed every little scuff and nick and dings so I like that color on there I think they did a nice job with it they did kind of a black gooseneck faucet with some stainless steel accents on I think that's a nice look as well they do these little uh little roll-up cutting boards pretty interesting there's stainless and of course down below at their stainless steel sink under mounted below the countertop we do have of course for storage drawers and big cabinets down below this is a fury on range so the three burner cooktop with the the gas range in it and this is a really nice feature it does have lighted oven with the window in there and then down below they did this just as a again it's just a standard drawer but they put this metal front on it just to give it more of a pop and row type of look from your from your new or more modern home design so an interesting take on this I do like it it's a nice big drawer it'll fit your pots and pans the full extension ball bearing roller guides on it so it's gonna be a heavy duty drawer up above that we do have a stainless steel residential style microwave pretty standard of ferreting unit like this looks good the overhead cabinets again our crown molded up at the top and they are staggered so they give it a nice look on the step back here so we can get as much as can try not to step on my tape measures while I do that but there's your kitchen in this unit and again I think they've gone a long way our friend Rob McCartney out there at XLR did the design work on this unit himself with with help from his team and I think they did a really really nice job of bringing nitro in to the next level of toy haulers they've really taken a big swing at this and done well with it this particular unit up over in the kitchen here does have the power fan that is a 12 volt fan that works extremely well in the backcountry you can open a lower window and that fan and crank that up in the evening and suck the hot air out of here it is an exhaust fans will pull hot air out and cold air in and you wouldn't believe the difference that'll make if you're not you know running your generator and have the EC on and all that stuff it's just hot my trailer cool outside really makes a big difference entry door here is kind of midship as you expect with a toy hauler down here in the in the step give them a little carpet out of the way there you can see that we do have the the toe kick power dust pan here in the unit which is really nice on a on a toy hauler unit like this again you're expecting this unit to be out in the sticks it's gonna get some dirt and stuff tracked in which you can sweep everything over to here kick that little that little tab there it has a little uh a little central back that's mounted down here in the main compartment and this really a nice little feature with these units we'll head up towards the bedroom bathroom on the upper deck here and see some more of the the integrated features in this unit we're gonna have our main control panels right here coming in inside the entry door and up towards the main and even see it's a pretty elaborate control panel in this particular unit we have of course all of your all of your lighting switches all of your awning and slide-out switches your bed lifts switches there as well as the generator start/stop switch that that is a nice feature just to keep everything centrally located so you're not hunting and pecking all over the unit for all these different little switches below that you are going to have your thermostat as well as your rear awning extender track button down below that we have the LCI main control panel and that's gonna offer it your leveling and things like that below that is going to be your max air control for that vent you'll see that the event was up way high of that exhaust vent we were shown in the kitchen there's up wait I can't reach it so we do have a remote control for it here that will operate that unit I was going to show you the door entry the swing doors I'm trying to say the heard swing doors that are in the bedroom and the bathroom they did a nice job just adding a little dimension to them they're not just a flat slab and they really have some heft the door is nice and heavy it feels good it does not feel like it's one of those RV doors it's going to come apart they close very positively and that's both in the bedroom area as well as going into the bathroom here I'm gonna start in the bedroom we'll come back to the bathroom as I kind of work my way around the corner here the bedroom features probably one of the most unique things about this particular unit it is gonna have the front automotive windshield so you come into your bedroom it's just light it's bright I'm you know I'm uh just under six feet tall the Headroom up here I'm gonna say it's probably about six six just judging on what it is so if you're under six six you should be able to stand up up here without any issues the deck that I'm standing on of course once you come up is a complete flat upper deck so it really does give you a very nice bedroom it feels very open even though it is a fairly small bedroom because we're trying keep this fifth wheel as short as possible it feels good because of this front windshield as well as this ventilation window over here we do have overhead overhead vent up here as well and that has a little fan in it it's a small one but the nice thing with that is if you wanted to do the big fan it's already pre-wired for that that vent is also wired for a second air conditioning unit if you wish to do that up against the front wall here of course we do have overhead cabinets as well as reading lights and with some small directional reading lights and then some bigger LEDs up there underneath that cabinet the upper the upper in the center there is going to be a shelf and then cabinets on each side and then down below we have nightstands with two drawers in each side as well as electrical outlets there we do have the Wardrobe slide out in the up here in the bedroom as well so this is going to give you three cabinets worth of hanging and that's gonna have hanging rods for three cabinets and then we have down below here we have three additional small drawers and then this nice big drawer as well so once again the cabinetry is really well done in this unit they did a great job keeping keeping it consistent throughout the unit again you're gonna see some dark wood with some light wood accents and that's gonna be an upper and lower type of type of arrangement really really nice unit I'm impressed with it all the way through the bed up here appears to be a full residential sized queen so it's gonna be 60 wide it's gonna be that full 80 foot 18 inch length that will take home linens which is very nice the bedroom is wired for a second TV this one does not have it installed that's a very simple easy installation if it's something you want to do your dealer can do it after market your or you can do it yourself it's really not a lot of hard thing to get done let's take a look at the bathroom in this unit and as most times with RV bathrooms it's gonna be usable not overly large but they did a nice job with it and the thing that really jumps out at me the second I walk in the door is gonna be this one piece fiberglass shower insert that they did in this unit really really a nice feature this is so much easier to clean than plastic when you when you you know have the plastic units are going to be in this two-piece configuration you step in there it feels like you're going to go through the floor and then they're just a miserable thing to clean the other side plastics and this climate is the almost always will cold crack in the winter it's a very very common warranty issue on units with with plastic shower surrounds plastic tubs so this is gonna be your one piece fiberglass they did a great job very solid feeling as the built in seat built-in shelving large and they did a high quality showerhead in it we do have a skylight up above LED lighting in there they really did a nice job in this shower we also added little linens back here behind the shower stall so they give you just enough room to put us and linen shelves in there some other things you're going to see is the toilet paper holder is mounted I know that sounds stupid thing but every other trailer you buy you'll have to put that in up here above we do have a towel bar already installed others do not come with that in a general generally speaking and we do have a towel hook up on the door there over here get a shot of the toilet here standard pneumatic porcelain toilet and that's of course but it is pretty standard fare your base cabinet here it's gonna feature the stainless steel bowl sink again that nice kind of black faucet up above it there and then a this is a seamless countertop it's not a solid surface but it's a seamless so again your cleanup is very easy to a nice beveled edge around the sink here to keep that again very easy to clean the lower cabinet is dark in here you are gonna see it does have a toe kick light and then of course we do have a medicine cabinet up here above with storage built into the back of it there also right over here is a little towel ring and I mentioned the things that towel rings are the towel hooks little linens that are a little linen shelves are mounted back here behind the shower for the simple fact that this shows to me company there's really spent a lot of time in Rd these people Rob McCartney especially goes out uses his units and and you know has a forum for his owners and he listens to what they say so when they come in and say hey you know why don't why don't I buy fifty sixty thousand dollar fifth wheel doesn't even have a toilet paper roll her in it or a towel bar Rob's listening to those type of things that he's installing those deals and and you know again with somebody someone probably commented two more he noticed it himself and we'd go out I gotta put all my linens in the bathroom or or in the bedroom someplace I have no room in the bathroom so just a little redesign on this unit to be able to allow for things like that it goes a long way to show me that XLR and Forest River is is really after a quality product on the market a lot of attention to detail I'm gonna pan through the interior here one more time just to kind of show you everything that's here and then we'll step outside take a walk around the outside of the unit again if you guys remember I am here at at Rocky Mountain RV today doing our filming so I'm right up on the street I apologize for the noise I do have the big muff on the microphone today so it shouldn't affect too much but we'll go out walk around it we're still still fighting the weather here I'd love to get back to my off-site filming location I'm just not quite there yet but I want to keep bringing the bringing the material to you as best that I can as we step back here we're gonna see a lot of the features here on the XLR nitro completely new look for for this model year versus what they were doing last year they did a very nice light white exterior and then added a lot of dark accents into it to give it a lot of definition I think the front cap speaks for itself the nitrile logo XLR up above it and we do have of course that big residential excuse me the big automotive style windshield up there on the front of the unit the lower portion of the front is the black and that's kind of a tougher coating so when we're going down dirt roads that kind of thing and rock sand and mud and things are flinging up against there gives us a little additional protection on that front and you can see of course they do have some lighting here in the front cap we do also have the Rhino pin box in from LCI this is just a little smaller pin box gives it a little better look it's well rated but it is it is a little smaller than your standard pin box a little easier to see when you're hooking up to right up here above I thought this was interesting they did a strip LED light up here on the front so if you're up you're working on the front compartments at all at night you've got a little extra lighting and that's a huge thing you know in here we're gonna see our battery compartment so this is where your batteries are going to store in here then you can have all of your different electrical systems that kind of funnel in through here you get the reset breakers and that type of thing your LC i1 control up there so all that stuff really gives you a lot of a lot of nice access to that in here you're gonna see of course our Cummins Onan 5500 watt generator this is going to be gasoline powered it'll pull off the fuel cell back in the back of the unit there and that's gonna be a really nice feature that's a start-stop from inside and that will power the complete unit including a second air conditioner if you do option it with that this particular unit just does have the single unit in the the main room beings it's a Montana build we don't generally see a lot of people needing a second AC on this size of fifth-wheel if you're if someplace a little warmer you're probably gonna want to go with that second AC just depends on your particular location down here on the door side you're gonna see propane compartment there directly behind that we have our belly storage and I thought they did a nice job here this is again a horizontal swing slam baggage latch you're gonna see you're a personal central vacuum here that we looked at from inside that's where that little toe kick dust pan goes we have a well built into the the off side of the frame here and then up and over and across the front end storage part is a little smaller in this then maybe would be ideal and again that's the product we just can't cheat the physics you're gonna see that this unit is as big as storage is you're gonna get in a fifth wheel this size we're trying to keep this fifth wheel as small as possible it's still ample room I think you still got plenty of room to put all your stuff and of course with a toy hauler you've got extra options in the back as well some big items they can go in the back door you're gonna see the main door here has the four tread aluminum entry step they're doing that on toy haulers mostly because the the the ones that fold out of the doorway they're the the solid step in that technique from LCI they they're not as good on an unlevel ground and get them adjusted where they're down on the ground so they're doing they're doing the force for level aluminum entry step that is attached to coach seems to be just fine on this unit nothing wrong with that entry grab handle here large entry grab handle I did want to mention that they are using high gloss gel coat fiberglass and it's a very smooth finish again UV protected better than a than a standard you know file on exterior also going to clean easier it kind of come back to that anybody's ever washed an RV knows it's a job and that easier you could make that the better off it is up above of course our power awning that's gonna run down here on the main side and you're also going to see of course LED light strips fairly bright out here today so it's a little hard to see but it is up there we do have it turned on exterior speakers we do run the big 16 inch aluminum wheels radial rubber on that as well and then you are gonna see the the ground control six post-electric leveling system on this so with leveling systems there's kind of three versions you have electric four-post electric six post and then hydraulic six post so it's kind of a good better best situation with something like this hydraulic is really not necessary on it at just over ten thousand pounds of dry weight that the hydraulic just really isn't necessary saying save a little bit of money they didn't go all the way down to a four post they're still gonna give you the full six post for the extra stability that's a good feature on this unit I think they did a good job with that was a good choice you know what will match to the yield on the back of the trailer you can see the new LCI rear patio deck that was installed on this unit and the nice thing with this is it has the steps coming down the door side of the unit instead of sticking way off the back here which then makes your camps I'd have to be another six eight feet longer than it was before you had all this stuff out here so it is nice to see that they did the steps down here off the side that railing does completely closed in if you have little kids or dogs or that type of thing that you want to be a let out on the back deck you can do that by closing off that completely up above you will see the Thule rear awning and that is power like I said it does it does power in and out from from inside we have some patio lighting up there above that and of course you can see that we do have the rear screen wall down so you can have all of this open and still have a screen barrier there so we're not getting any nasty little bugs inside our unit while we're enjoying that montana backcountry so going up the off door side you're going to see kind of your more utility side of the unit we have the roof ladder this that's mounted here on the side that's a little Swing Out bracket we do have lighting back here as well this is going to be your fuel your fuel cell system you can have a little gauge in an on/off switch in here I did bring my keys so in the side of this store I'm sorry I apologize I can't show you that inside that's just simply gonna be a fuel handle just like it see it you fill in your car that's what that's gonna be in the tank fills right here these tanks are gonna be and I didn't see the spec Ford on this one they're generally generally going to be 28 gallon fuel saw is very standard throughout the industry I'm sure this one is the same you can check the specs on that on the Forest River website but it's gonna be very common with that this is gonna run a ten gallon gas electric water heater there's mounted here on the off door side and then of course your 50 amp hour service there as well this is gonna be your central docking station here inside the off door side of your belly compartment that's gonna house your drain valves your city water your black water put black water tank hookups for the flush out all your winterize the valves are here as well says the easy winner has system on it very nicely done very clean you do have the switch here for your front jacks as well as the the auto level push button and then up above that little switch there's for the front lights and then you also have a battery disconnect so really you know thinking this unit through very well I'm pretty impressed with nitro in the price point it lands in is gonna be you know stomach able for most average people people with you know to two-income household you know 3/4 ton even a gas pickup would tow this diesels gonna do it better of course but gas would get it done you know they could get into this fifth wheel and probably be in that you know four hundred and fifty dollars per month something like that and and really have a complete package that's gonna sleep everybody it's gonna haul the toys and it's gonna be fairly small to get around within the toy hauler standings this isn't a small fifth wheel but it is small beans it's a toy hauler that'll take a full-sized UTV so this is a happy camper coming to you from Rocky Mountain RV and beautiful beauty on Tanna we really appreciate our sponsors letting us take a look at this unit they just got it brand
