Thanks for this. Very 80s framing, and a bit cringy, but I still enjoyed it.

This match was the final game of the 1987 Speed Chess Challenge between Kasparov and Britain's top rated player at the time, Nigel Short. The commentary by GM Ray Keene is fantastic and I found myself more captivated with each move. If anyone has links to a similar style of chess videos, please share below as I found this very interesting to watch!

and welcome to the Hippodrome for the SEC's and final game in the speed chess challenge in which two of the most inventive and innovative chess players in the world are battling out for the handsome London Docklands trophy a nice piece of engraved glass but really the key thing I suppose is to win and to recap on the score there's no way that Nigel Shaw can win because of the moment is Kasparov for short one but still there's an awful lot to play for particularly in chess terms so will you please welcome the world number seven and the highest rated British player ever Nigel short it suits you so well that dinner jacket I think all chests should be played in a dinner Jackie for now what do you think why not why not why not Nigel you can't win the contest but you can win this game now I know Gary isn't listening so what are you gonna do well I happen to know otherwise so I'm not gonna secretly Delia's tricks you know in the car yes well I've always got devious tricks all right well let's see if it pans out Nigel good luck not so short and now the man with the commanding lead as in de should have the world chess champion garry kasparov okay and they're happy very happy yes that was his trick that's what he was doing with the marjorine over the floor I used to see dirty tricks you're used to say yes do you enjoy the game so far yes of course yes yes specialty win especially the wind is no no no not the result but yeah you went right to the event yes because I won't be complaining the result you want to complain about the results why why there is only result when I can't complains 6-love you're a dick can play chess garry kasparov so we are at the mark of a winner but will he win tonight we'll see taking up the commentary for us Grand Master Raymond Keene working the clock the arbiter Bob wait there's second give me a second years to go okay I'm ready you ready yes and Nigel short is white making his favorite opening move the King's pawn as in his other two games of the white pieces and for the third time the Sicilian defense comes White's knife and that's far off choosing the same as in the first games short occupies the center pawn exchange and the knight takes back Knight comes out attacking the white pawn white defends and the Nidal variation again night officer SETI Nidal friend after the famous polish Argentine Grand Master Miguel Nidal who introduced the whole idea and this is looking very much like the second game both sides repeating the moves from that game short solidifying his Center and preparing for an attack on the right hand side of the board the Kings flank black develops the night and the shame same sharp porn thrust that we saw in the second game like stops the porn advancing yes the same of porn avalanche the white massive pawns on the kingside threatening to advance and swap the black division world champion in deep thought the famous Road our thinker posed and a new move the Black Knight jumps into the center Kasparov has deviated from the second game so now we have an entirely new position on the board short pace with unusual problem the natural thing to do is the white move the Queen no he's moved the roof threatening to push on with porn from g4 to g5 but sooner or later the natural thing for white to do must be to move his Queen and then castle on the left-hand side of the board that's the only way to prosecute a king tide attack black Queen comes out attacking the white pawn on a b2 Queen defends the porn on b2 a somewhat passive move perhaps not exactly what Nigel had in mind when he played this aggressive opening and Kasparov counter-attacks immediately a pawn thrust in the center White has problems here his whole strategy must be to castle on the Queen side of the ball the left flank but now the white queen on c1 jams up that possibility make scarcely impossible for the time being and without queenside castling why it's game does not hang together at all well meanwhile short his face with his tremendous black counter-attack in the center the counter-attack that's come unusually early considering that Kasparov is playing with the black pieces playing black of course in chess is rather like facing the serve in tennis you're meant to defend for a few moves but here Kasparov is already attacking Kasparov slumped back in the chair leaning forwards now obviously rather content with his position short really has serious problems here how to face this black central counter-attack he's already three minutes down on the clock after these few opening moves short at last moves Bishop f12 ito purely defensive defending the weak poor on f3 absolutely not the kind of move Shores to be playing with white in this last game no first of all the world champion captures pawns in the center and short recaptures with the night and Knight takes Knight pawn takes Knight black now has a clear positional advantage the white pawn on e4 is isolated and therefore weak and the Black Knight as a marvelous outpost square right in front of it further blacks development flows very easily surely now Kasparov is going to play as Bishop from f8 to c5 developing that Bishop and hitting the white knight a modest move Kasparov hasn't but the Bishop on c5 I find that very surprising but that Bishop move attacks the white pawn on h4 and threatens to take it with check this is something that short absolutely must stop look back to each one probably the only way of defending that form satisfactorily but now White's lost a lot of time with the rook there are some very good rules in chess that say don't move the same piece twice in the opening unless you absolutely have to a short can't be at all pleased that has been forced to move that rook from h1 where it started to g1 and now back to h1 again Kasparov person is person his lips the pain standing out on his face concentration this man has a brain like a massive computer in fact there's no computer in the world at the moment that can challenge Garry Kasparov at chess successfully only a minute between them now Kasparov still thinking he's got the advantage but how to pursue it and the bishop has developed Paul goes to c3 and Kasparov his queen retreats out of the line of whites bishop now nigel Michoud he move his queen in order to get castle no first of all he drops the bishop back a defensive move now Kasparov has a choice castling kingside all castling queenside both options for black hair first of all Kasparov makes this porn thrust the idea is very interesting he hopes to attack already on the Queen side of the board in case white castles there it's a preemptive strike we moved now at last castles clean side for white becomes possible it looks as if white can castle king side as well but don't forget that white King's rook has already moved twice and once the rook has moved castling is no longer a legal option Black's Knight invades the white position a dominating square see for a really powerful outpost for that night yes marshals swapped off the Black Knight this seems to be a force move kasparov recaptures with the queen and why it attacks the queen with the poor blacks Queen goes back but this is looking very serious for Nigel he has weak palms everywhere poorly for is weak the port on c3 is weak at last he castles Queen side Kasparov castles on the kingside preparing to deploy his rooks for an attack against the white king Marshall loses King into a relative safety on the b1 square and Kasparov launches is known attack against the white king another pawn coming forwards this is going to be a race on opposite sides of the board who's going to get there first in theory it should be Kasparov and Nigel is three minutes down on the clock looking at the clock nervously Nigel must get something going on the kingside if you survive this game yes he sacrificed of all Cosmo is blocked with h5 and the white rook comes back to g1 like threatening to push the port on from g5 to g6 as far as ignores it continues his own attack against the white king the same tactic white plays b3 to be for nigel has done exactly the same on the queenside as Casper noted in the kingside he's blocked the assault by passing the black porn rush Kasparov puts a brooklyn c8 attacking the white pawn on c3 black queen and black rook together ganging up on the c3 form that paul must be defended nigel now almost 5 minutes down on the clock the rook defends the Palmach sideways Nigel's hoping obviously to Britain that rook across from the Kings side swing across the third-ranked to try and drop some King site counter play a safety move by Kasparov stopping white from pushing his own porn on to g6 simply a safety precaution bishop attacks the black Queen Queen sidesteps attacking the white pawn on e4 and whites Queen defends the porn like rook advances to a strong outpost I must say Nigel is making the best of a bad job with this position a good booth the Bishop occupies an excellent post here signing through the black King side marginal position is still bad but counter chances are developing with a bishop like that dominating the center there are always technical tricks black doubles his rooks on the C file threatening the white port on the c3 Nigel defends with the Queen adding extra protection sideways to that pawn and there's another idea behind that Queen move why it's hoping in the future somehow to break through to the h6 square with his queen it's very difficult to see how it's going to happen at the moment the white pawn on g5 is in the way but perhaps a knight sacrificed or maybe a rooks sacrifice on the Kings side and that Queen might break through nigel playing this part of the game very inventive Lee I'm much better than he played the opening of course the volition is still bad but counter Chuck's RB into the merge black Bishop comes out attacking the white porn again even this is a minor triumph that blacks should offer the exchange of one of his bishops and the rook comes across defending the pawn Nigel isn't interested Jason playing Knight takes bishop black pawn advances again we've seen Casper after this sort of things so many times before push up or forwards there's near the white position as possible it can be a tremendous menace in the endgame don't forget when a pall reaches the back rank it becomes a queen and the closer those pawns get the more dangerous they become Queen goes to f4 module certainly got some counter taking ideas on the Kings side against Gary's own King the time difference whittled down only about two minutes in it now and a defensive move the bishop drops back defending the Paul and f7 and White's knight retreats very good move now the bishop on e5 not only threatens on the King side but defends the c3 pawn of backwards retro actively that Bishop on e5 really is a tower of strength Nigel's really making a fight of this is also threatened to plays Knight to a5 Knight to a5 does that stop it Kasparov moved his queen Knight a5 is still possible however Blackburn has one of those famous tricks which Kasparov is absolutely notorious if Knight a5 rook takes b4 check is possible Nigel mustn't fall into that it's very tempting to play Knight a5 but he mustn't do it he's played 95 I didn't think this was possible maybe there's a flaw in the world champions calculations I must say it looked okay to me but maybe there's something wrong perhaps Nigel seemed further maybe Nigel's idea is just to move his king into the corner to the a1 square blacks move if he plays rook take the B 4 check King a1 what a cunning idea by Nigel it seems that the world champion has fall into a trap of his own making that's what I've done it rook takes b4 check King a1 Queen moves out of the attack pawn takes rook Queen takes pawn on b4 Queen retreats Nigel short is a whole rook up Kasparov now behind on the clock must be absolutely obvious to him that he's screwed up this I don't believe what is going on the rook attacking the Queen white cannot take the rook he should take Queens extraordinary move by Cass Bonneville it must be desperation if Nigel doesn't panic he must win this game Queen days Queen Bishop takes Queen and the rook moves pawn attacks this is complete nonsense white luckily winning easily rook moves off attack Caswell takes the bishop route takes bishop check King moves out of check white still a whole look of night retreats but minor difficulties caused by the position of his king bishop checks to the white King King lose rook check King moves away rook takes Knight my god this can't work this cannot work just take the rook Nigel no king up attacking to pieces that's even stronger yes Casper's resigned by versus has won the final day like that sensational or what it's sensational gentlemen come over here what a fantastic way to end this particular contest I amazing first of all a word from the winner of the game Nigel short Nigel congratulations well done be honest you must have been worried in the early stages well I certainly was it's a very strange match because whenever I've got a reasonable position early on in the game I've lost but then I in an awful position like today you know then what I want is for a very unusual match it was certainly but how do you feel now oh well not too bad not too bad I'm not surprised Gary it wasn't 6-love yeah doesn't it it wasn't 5:1 it was for two but there's no difference between 5 1 and 14 surely nothing I couldn't win this position as usual tasty food see takes before Bishop takes e4 Queen takes a veloute listen she do the analysis after Morris explain him I explained to him why so why us why you lost okay no I was much better again it's for a strange years I lost two games when I had big advantage after their things but you must have thought after that out Lee which you had this game so now surely you must be really could you certainly looked very much like the sub game yes like the neither something it is yes and we know what happened to lose her again the same result the same situation but you did win the match Garry Kasparov's many congratulations Lincoln Ivan Drago sure
