so let me guess guys you've already watched that 30 minute video telling you how to sharpen your chainsaw you went out and tried it and your chainsaw is still cutting either crooked or not at all don't worry guys cuz today I'm going to let you in on the easiest way to get your chainsaw cutting again like [Music] butter now I have been asked a lot of times to make a video on how to sharpen a chainsaw chain but the truth is even though I have sharpened thousands of chainsaw chains I don't use a file because for the last 13 years I've had a commercial chain grinder but you don't have to have one of these to get the perfect pitch now don't feel bad if you haven't been able to sharpen your chainsaw correctly I mean it's not something you do every day the majority of people have no idea how to do it I just want to make it easier on you so let's go over exactly why you're Chang is not cutting at all or cutting crooked even if you have a freshly sharpened chain even a brand new chain reason number one it's dull I know what you're thinking I'm crazy but listen in the many years that we worked on chainsaws and sharpen chains you have no idea how many times people would come pick up their freshly sharpened chains or buy brand new chains for their chainsaw and come immediately back and say this chain does not work it is not cutting anything and I'm telling you guys even though you don't think it can happen you can dull your chain the first cut cuz most don't realize how easy it is to dollar chain okay so I got a brand new chunk of chain here so I can show you guys you have three main parts to cutting with your chainsaw you've got your top Blade the side blade and your drag now you think oh I have all this razor sharp cutting area to deal with no you don't the most important part of this entire process right here is this itty bitty little tip right there so if you feel like it stopped cutting always check your tips first usually if you can catch it in time you can just file it real quick and get those tips back in shape because if you keep going at it it's just a blunt Edge hitting against that wood it's not going to cut into the rest of the blade so just for example you can see here as it's lined up on the bar the first thing to even touch the wood is going to be that point so showing you here you've got your wood comes around and it takes chunks out as it goes so how important is the point well it's easy to stab through my hand but it's not really easy to push through it no matter how sharp my blade is number two reason why your Chain's not cutting at all next we're going to talk about drags now I have my brand new chunk of 38 full chain here and I have a chain that's been very used and sharpened of 38 full let me get these together so I can show you how much this one's been sharpened comparably to the brand new chain about right there so you can see it's about half gone so far so why do they even put these little drags on there to slow you down so I know what you're thinking well I don't want to be slowed down I want to cut through this wood as fast as possible so why can't I just get rid of that little thing well they're there for a reason now there's a song and dance to this the top of your drag from Factory comes 25,000 lower than the tip of your tooth that is actually your cutting swath now the teeth are set at an angle and after so many sharpens it starts wearing down so far that the tip of your tooth no matter how sharp gets hidden behind your drag and then it don't want to cut so although you're not going to have to do this as often as you are going to sharpen every once in a while you do want to file your drags down you're going to have to break out your flat file and just give it some good swipes if you can push really hard you can get through them quicker and you ain't got to get your gauge out or anything I mean it's 25,000 but you can pretty much eyeball it that it's a little teeny bit shorter than the tip of your tooth and the last reason your chainsaw might not be cutting is a very common one bar oil I tell everybody whenever you go to run your chainsaw the first thing you do is stick the bar towards the ground give it a good go and see if you've got a steady stream coming off the tip of your bar towards the ground that way you know it's oiling correctly if it's not happening definitely check make sure you got Bar Oil in there A lot of times people get a bunch of debris inside their bar oil tank and it'll clog up their filter that could be an issue there's also on the side of the bar a little hole right here that the bar oil travels through this hole and all the way down the bar so if that's clogged up like it is on this one right here it's not going to work so there is a science to it I mean if all those factors are pretty close you're going to have a good cut now let's go over what's going on if your chainsaws wanting to cut at a curve now the first reason is one you might not think about if you have a chain and you've been using it a bunch and you find nothing wrong with it everything on top is perfect your tips are fine it's sharpened perfectly and it just keeps cutting crooked sometimes even though it's still good on the top you might have worn out the bottom the drivers that actually ride in the bar will wear over time so the metal that the chain is made out of is softer than the bar so over time as those drivers start to thin on each side they'll start to bend over in the bar while it's running and cut crooked second reason and it's hard to spot cuz you look at your chain and you might look at a tooth and say gosh it still looks perfect everything looks sharp my point still looks good but you got to check both sides sometimes you can have a perfect row of teeth on the left side that all the points Point are perfect and you hit something on the right side so all the tips are curled over on the right teeth so what is it going to do it's going to cut perfect chunks as it's going down the left but the right side is prohibited from getting through that woods so it's going to constantly be cutting to the left or right depending on which side is boogered up and the third reason is things haven't been evening out while you've been sharpening your own chain no matter when you're left-handed or right-handed when you're following one way your bodies in a Groove go in a certain way but when you go the other way it's doing something different no matter how hard you try so when a customer would bring a chain in and ask us to straighten it up when it had such a drastic difference in cutting teeth lengths I would say no one because it puts a lot of heat on that chain as I'm grinding it down and two it puts a lot of use on my $150 diamond wheels but if you've got one tooth this big and one tooth that big you know it's a song and dance guys one's going to cut better than the other and it's going to cut in circles so how you going to easily get your chain sharp again you can take it to the shop but I charge $10 a pop and that can get expensive you can pull out old trusty hair but a lot of times you find yourself weaving in a waving and it didn't work the last time did it you can get these file guides but they're not very easy to use either you can't even see what's going on under this thing now you can go to Harbor freay and get a bench chain grinder for pretty cheap and they are pretty good but do you really want another tool mounted to your bench that you're only going to use every once in a while probably not but you could use a tool that you probably already got I know most of you guys got a Dremel and dremel's got a really cool chainsaw sharpening attachment let me show you how it works the first thing you got to do is identify what chain is on your chainsaw and you can usually find this right on this information on the side of your bar like this one says 38 now there's three main chains that come on all homeowner saws in commercial tube is 38 low 38 full and 325 now the 38 low is much smaller than the 38 full you'll be able to tell the difference and the 325 is sort of in the middle but each one takes a different file so here I got the hand files that I keep in stock for all three of these chains we've got 38 low 325 38 full 730 seconds 316 and 53 seconds but these also come in millimeters because when you get your Dremel attachment it does show you on the side bits it comes with so like if I know I need the one for the full chain I know it's the 730 seconds and it's 5.5 mm closest one we got a 5.6 here if I need one for my 3/8 low it's 4 mm we got one that's 4 mm so yeah it comes with any one that you can possibly need now these are some diamond ones that I'm going to try out cheap I'm just going to see how they go I'll let you know about them later when you do wear your bit out and you need more bits once you know which size you need in millimeters you can actually order a packet of just that size now to install the attachment it's super simple it just screws on the end of your Dremel and depending on what size bit you're using um they have shims because this bracket has to be so far for the perfect depth and if you want a stepbystep example um you can go to dremel.com or they do show it on YouTube so the chain I'm going to be doing on this chainsaw is 3/8 full and if you can tell we're going to get in here close it's not that bad doll but you can see all the ones on the right side have a little curve over the edge the ones on the left are still almost perfect you see here this one's curved so something came along that right side and took out the tips now even though only one side is boogered up you're still going to want to do the same on the other side as you do on that one that way you can keep your teeth at the same length now the first thing that's cool is you don't have to worry about depth a lot of times I'd see customers bring their chainsaws in that they'd been sharpening themselves and they would they would sharpen and push downward instead of up towards the cutting tooth and you'd find that they had big divots out of their lengths this one the bracket sits right on top just like that now the 30° angles 30° is what you want to have your chain pitched at so all you're doing is lining the angle of this 30° up with the bar when you come around to the other one it's got another 30° angle and you'll just line it up with the bar so even though you might want to move forward Ward and backwards you know you're always parallel with your [Music] [Music] bar all right so I got my chain compared to a new one it's a pretty nice tip pretty nice tip pretty nice tip that's what I'm talking about right there nothing's rolled over this thing's ready to cut so guys that's it I'm going to leave links to everything in the description box below this video if you'd like to get your own and if you find yourself coming
