[Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] so tonight in addition to celebrating miles bar mitzvah and he has been doing a fabulous job so far we're looking forward to seeing him do the rest of the service tomorrow but in addition to that we're also celebrating tonight beth asheron's social action activities and events these are the activities that we're doing in our community to help our community become a better place a more welcoming place a more helpful place and also to improve the world around us and to begin this uh evening i want to invite diane levy to come up and talk about our program with the reynolds school which you know we sort of partnered with last year at the beginning of the year and we're going to continue again this year so diane levy is going to tell you all about it how fitting it is that social action shabbat is this shabbat during the bar mitzvah of miles who comes from a very long line of a family dedicated to doing for others and to social action approximately a year and a half ago rabbi morgan and i were on an american jewish committee zoom call and we learned that children from economically disadvantaged families begin school very far behind children from middle and upper class backgrounds and unfortunately rarely catch up rabbi morgan and i connected after the call and realized that we wanted in fact had to do something to be a small part of the betterment of these students and frankly of houston through the houston area urban league we were partnered with reynolds elementary school in the sunnyside neighborhood a mere 10 minutes from here our goal was to support the staff and students at reynolds where approximately 96 percent of the student population is economically disadvantaged while at the same time enriching our own lives by learning from them and sharing the desire to start these young scholars off equipped with what they need to be successful in life the hope was and still is that this will be a long-term mutually beneficial partnership beth yeshurin and reynolds elementary school reynold's staff welcomed us with open arms even as covid and all of the issues surrounding covet and education were placing a supremely heavy burden on the principal the staff and they worked and still work tirelessly every day to make sure these future leaders are loved fed educated and nurtured in every way possible and tonight we welcome to bethy sherin some friends from reynolds who we're so happy to have here for the first time i'd like to introduce mr paul hippolyte is the wraparound specialist from reynolds [Applause] and miss rhonda pickett who is keeps the world spinning at reynolds that's what i like to say 30 years with hisd and we're expecting principal carter are you here yet no she's on her way she's running a little late and we're the first this is the first time mr hippolyte spoke i don't know if you all heard him but this is the first time to welcome the pickets and principal carter to bethy sherin and we're so so happy that you're here they work tirelessly to provide for these young scholars and their families i am so proud to be a member of this congregation which understands its role in the greater houston community and has volumes of members ready to step up some of whom who are in this room right now last year we provided each student and classroom with backpacks and all the school supplies needed through the generosity of our members we did so again this school year last year a number of our wonderful congregants tutored virtually which isn't easy and this year we are moving to in-person tutoring our volunteers will make a difference for the youngest of reynolds students we funded a school-wide leadership program had a hugely successful toy drive supported the teachers and staff in any way we can last year providing staff lunches and surprises and along with congressman al green provided each reynolds family with an heb gift card for thanksgiving we also provided much needed cleaning supplies and personal care items for reynolds families in need following the freeze last winter our volunteers prepared over 250 summer packets so the students could practice their reading and word recognition skills over the summer we will once again have a toy drive this winter and a book drive this spring for reynolds students this year through your generosity we're also able to provide much needed academic intervention materials to help the wonderful staff catch these students up from the craziness that was last year for those of you unfamiliar with the term wrap around services this department provides students with the non-academic support necessary to be successful in school including access to mental and physical health professionals food housing clothing transportation etc this past may mitch and i were proud to represent bethy sherin at the hisd wraparound volunteer and service provider appreciation ceremony for those who service schools that feed into worthing and yates high schools we proudly stood with dozens and dozens of organizations ranging from the houston police department big brothers big sisters organization heb and many others as the only jewish organization represented thanks to you all for making this happen all of us involved with the reynold with reynolds elementary and bethesda shurin ongoing and evolving partnership are eternal eternally grateful to our members who provide the needed funds and volunteer hours to be able to accomplish so much in just a year and a half we invite all of you to join us we'd love to have you on our committee to tutor at reynolds to participate in the toy or book drive or donate much needed funds used for all the programs on our wish list funding for the pto after school activities the wits program to name a few i sincerely and honestly believe we spend every dollar carefully and wisely for the betterment of these future houston leaders and their families if you'd like there's a reynolds link on the bethy sherin website to donate directly if you've purchased school supplies off our amazon wishlist last year or this year thank you so very much and again thank you for joining us tonight miss pickett mr hippolyte and your families it is truly an honor to welcome you here finally and thank you to the most generous congregants in the world from betheshuran for caring and sharing and being a part of this partnership shabbat shalom [Applause] so first miss pickett mr hepalite and your families it's an honor to have you here at beth the ashern you're always welcome we are honored to have you here and i want to thank my colleague robert morgan and diane levy for all of their hard work for giving us the opportunity to not give a hand down but a hand up and to work in partnership with our friends at the right old school not only because it's the right thing to do but because we can learn from each other we can grow together as human beings it is good people and so it really is a delight it's an honor for us and we look forward to continuing to help them so thank you especially diane for all of your hard work in making this happen and all those who helped you we have a lot planned this year as you know social action has become a big part of our congregation there are so many resources in this shul there's so many people in this shul that can give back to those in need let us use the blessings that god has given us to help to help jews and non-jews throughout the greater houston region to go out and do good to bring light into this world and to fulfill the eternal jewish promise of being an orla gayim a light into the nations and so my call to all of us this year is to do a little bit more than you may already be doing to push yourself a little bit more to get even more involved to find another organization to get involved with to give a little bit more money if you've been blessed this past year and you're doing okay share those blessings with others because as we all know there are so many people in need at this time our hope and prayer is that we continue to set an example for other synagogues and churches of performing to kudo alum giving back and repairing the world i want to thank our social action chairs morgan steinberg and lindsey tavore along with our program director jennifer rosensweig for giving us a whole year of programs and events and ways in which we can get involved and give back not only are we helping and partnering with the reynolds school let me give you just a rundown on some of the other things and i do so not to brag it's not about bragging or showing what we're doing it's not about that it's i want you to hear there may be something you hear this evening that piques your interest that you can come to your clergy or to jennifer rosensweig or to our social action chairs of course to diane lieby and say i want to get involved i know someone who can help and i want to make that contact or i want to give my time or my resources and you may have other suggestions other ideas there's always more we can do to make a positive difference in our community this month through today in september for example we've collected over 100 pairs of shoes for organization called soul loved we're continuing our drive for camp impact it's an incredible camp for homeless and underprivileged youth it gives youth an opportunity for a summer camp experience and we're currently collecting clothing shoes and jeans for kids under the age of 12. gently use clothes and i'm gonna make a personal plea here my daughter my seven eighteen-year-old daughter is very involved in this organization and i promised her we'd fill four bins we've only filled one so far so it ends tomorrow so make me so don't try to help me out with my daughter because i don't want my daughter to be upset with me there's one person in the world i don't want upset with me and that's my daughter so there are bins out there and if you're coming back for the bar mitzvah tomorrow to services tomorrow if you have any gently used clothes for children shoes or clothes for kids 12 and under you'll see the bins right out here as you walk outside of the freeman leavitt bring them tomorrow and hopefully we can collect some more clothes to give to those kids in need who attend camp impact every summer this month we're kicking off a new program called the shabbat shalom bag program another idea by our social action chairs we also think of often think of social action as working to support organizations in our larger community but we also want to help those in our own bet the assurance community and so this new program the shabbat shalom bag will connect give you an opportunity to connect with the member on shabbat who would benefit from a special outreach from the congregation in an incredible way to do so volunteers will pick up a bag with shabbat candles and grape juice from betheshern on a monday and during the week they'll purchase a kosher challah and add their own creative touches to the back decorations a card a special treat then deliver the bag to someone who may live alone or someone who's been ill on thursday or friday before shabbat we'll help put together a list of congregants that would especially appreciate hearing from other members of our congregation with this gift all we ask is you go to our website and sign up for a date in which you can give back the first date to do this is october 22nd and we'll continue to do this on an ongoing basis in november we'll be participating again with our friends at bbyo with the count me in program and this program ensures that jewish families that might not otherwise have the means to celebrate hanukkah have the opportunity to enjoy a festive holiday experience look for more information as we approach december we'll also do hands-on work to support search our friend marsha abramson and our sisterhood coordinate a monthly assembly of snack bags that the search outreach teams hand out by serving the needs of homeless in our community in november we'll assemble thanksgiving meal kits and this is a project that congregants of all ages can help with in december diane mentioned it we'll do our second toy drive for the students at reynolds elementary and this will be chaired by jessica malowitz january of course is our jewish holiday of two bespot which falls towards the end of the month and that gives us an opportunity to do things outdoors so stay tuned for some outdoor programs we can do to clean up our community february is our jewish disability awareness and inclusion month and we'll offer educational opportunities partnering with our friends at jewish family service in the real abilities film festival in march our member jamie garrett has already volunteered to oversee a book collection project and will aim to give each child at reynolds a new gift a new book as we collect books for those who may not otherwise get them and before we finish the program year we'll have a couple additional donation drives and other ways to give back to those in need we hope that everyone can find an opportunity this year to make a donation our volunteer in person to support some amazing organizations our community as well as the congregants and our own bethesheren family we want to remember that not only is it the right thing to do but it's the jewish thing to do the judaism isn't just a prayer of the heart it's a prayer of the hands and the feet it's a religion of getting involved and always doing what we can to make a positive difference to tie it into our torah portion this week the kabbalists of our tradition remind us and teach us that when the world was created it was created with the big bang and those lights that were shattered with that bang went into the world many of those lights went into us and when we do a good deed when we help someone when we make a positive difference when we give of our time and resources we bring back a little bit of light into that world that was shattered when creation when god created our world and by doing so we repair the world and we do so to ultimately bring redemption and ultimately redeem this world so this year again i invite you and i encourage you to give a little bit more light into this world to repair creation and to make our community a better one thank you again everyone for being here this evening and participating in our social action shabbat it's so now ready to continue our service as we rise for the elenu page 54. thank you thanks miles thanks rabbi mueller page 56 helena [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] m [Music] so [Music] and now we invite all those in mourning and all those observing a yurt site to remain standing with the words of the mourner scottish which can be found on page 58 and this week about the assurance we offer condolences to the families of michael bethesda sharon is we're starting our new year in jewish learning project our adult learning program here at beth sherin so this sunday begins a bunch of exciting new classes rabbi horwitz is going to teach a class on jewish values and the israel-palestinian conflict it's a program that was put together by the shalom hartmann institute in jerusalem includes videos from some of the scholars at the institute and a bunch of jewish texts to discuss some of the issues that we all sort of grapple with in dealing with that complicated situation in the middle east he's also going to be teaching a class on abraham joshua heschel's book about the prophets of the bible heshel was a brilliant thinker and his book on the prophets was and still is considered a landmark reading of the prophets so rabbi horowitz will take us through the prophets as understood by abraham joshua heschel we're also having barry gelman come and teach a class on the midrash related to the book of genesis beret sheet and we're going to have zoom classes once a month on thursdays rabbi strauss is going to do a lunch and learn zoom on the first thursday of the month and the first one is coming on october 7th he's
