Good afternoon! Today I want to perform for you Sevillanas from the XVIIIth Century collected by Federico García Lorca in his Spanish Popular Songs He was an Andalusian poet he was in love with flamenco and Spanish folklore He recorded this with Argentinita She was an international dancer in 1931 She sang and he played the piano although he got inspired by the guitar because Sevillanas are traditionally played with the guitar to make this piece I arranged and transcribed it You can find my arrangement on my website www.paolahermosin.com There I tell you in sheetmusic and tabs and also with rhythmical symbols how to play the strumming techniques on the right hand the chords and also the lyrics for you to be able to sing it too Sevillanas are dances which come from Seville as it is called by its name They are also played a lot in Huelva and many other parts in Andalusia They are sung at the Feria which is a party where formerly cattle were sold food, and other things Women wear traditional costumes called a Flamenca suit or a Gypsy costume polka dot Although fashion has evolved a lot and nowadays we can see costumes with different colours and styles Men also have a specific costume There are horse carriages going through the hostel They set up booths with friends who want to celebrate it there eating and dancing inside As this Sevillanas are from the XVIIIth century, we can imagine then how old they are and how old this music style is They come from seguidillas and also from Bolera School there are many influences and also some types of sevillanas As Sevillanas Corraleras (they were sung in corrales neighborhoods) Sevillanas boleras, rocieras... It's said that those who dance well Jotas, dance well Sevillanas corraleras too because they are danced differently as nowadays Sevillanas which are danced in the Feria cause the dance uses more jumps and different movements Some authors say that it also received influences from Zarabanda a dance which came from America when Spanish settlers went there and it got mixed with the rhythm of musicians who already lived there New dances were created in 6/8 by 3/4 with a very marked rhythm Over time, it got slower and, with other influences, it gave rise styles as Sevillanas but also Zapateado and other dances This Zarabanda quick and hectic doesn't seem to Sarabandes by Bach in their suites for lute or violin for cello... because these Sarabandes are slower with a marked slow rhythm Sevillanas go in 3/4 so it has 3 pulses 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 The guitar goes playing that 3 by 4 too as you'll hear along the piece Lorca got inspired by the guitar but when he plays it in the piano, he does musical props like this and I adapted this to the guitar making the traditional strums At the original recording they play 3 stanzas I wanted to respect the original recording and I also play these 3 Sevillanas Although nowadays are 4 sevillanas the ones that are danced As soon Feria de Sevilla and their towns start, where I am from, I wanted to pay tribute and dedicate it to all Andalusian people and to all of you who see this video, of course and let's keep celebrating it from home You can subscribe like, comment or share with your friends if you liked it and thank you so much for watching!
