thanks we praise you for your glory lord jesus christ only son of the father lord god lamb of god you take away the sin of the world have mercy on us you are seated at the right hand of the father receive our prayer for you alone are the you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen the lord be with you let us pray oh lord you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing send your holy spirit and pour into our hearts your greatest gift which is love the true bond of peace and of all virtue without which whoever lives is accounted as dead before you grant this for the sake of all your only son jesus christ who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god now and forever kindly sit for the ministry of the world a reading from the word of god written in the book of genesis 45th chapter beginning at the third verse genesis 45 3-11 and verse 15. joseph said to his brothers i am joseph is my father still alive but his brothers could not answer him so despair were there at his presence then joseph said to his brothers come closer to me and they came closer he said i am your brother joseph whom you sold into egypt and now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here for god sent me before you to preserve life for the famine has been in the land for two years and there are five more years in which there will be neither flowing nor harvest god sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to keep allay for you my survivor many survivors so it was not you who sent me here but god he has made mia a father to pharaoh and lord of all his house a rule over all the land of egypt hurry and go up to my father and say to him thus says your son joseph god has made me lord of all egypt come down to me do not delay you shall settle in the land of joseon and you shall be near me you and your children and your children's children as well as your flocks your herds and all that you have i provide for you there since there are many or five more more years of famine to come so that you and your household and all that you have will not come to poverty and he kissed all of his brothers and upon them and after that his brothers taught with him this is the word of the lord he appointed psalm 37 verses 1 to 12 and 41-42 [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] is [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] please [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] in his house [Music] a reading from the word of god written in the first letter of paul to the corinthians the 15th chapter beginning at the 35th verse first corinthians 15 verses 35 to 38 and 42-50 someone will ask how are dead raised with what kind of body do they come fool what you saw does not come to life unless it dies and as for what you sow you do not sow the body that is to be but a bare seed perhaps of wheat or of some other brain but god gives it a body as he has chosen and to each kind of seed its own body so it is with the resurrection of the dead what is sown is perishable what is raised is imperishable it is sown in dishonor it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power it is on a physical body it is raised a spiritual body if there is a spiri a physical body there's also a spiritual body thus it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam became a life-giving spirit but it is not the spiritual that is first but the physical and then the spiritual spiritual the first man was from the earth a man of dust the second man is from heaven as was the man of dust so are those who are thus of the dust and as is the man of heaven so are those who are of heaven just as we have borne the image of the man of dust we will also bear the image of the man of heaven what i am saying brothers and sisters is this flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of god nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable this is the word of the lord the gradual hymn 841. [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is foreign [Music] it [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] trees [Music] so [Music] foreign oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the lord be with you the continuation of the holy gospel of our lord jesus christ according to saint luke the sixth chapter beginning to read at the 27th verse glory to christ our savior at that time jesus said i say to you that listen love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who abuse you if anyone strikes you on the cheek offer the other also and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt give to everyone who begs from you and if anyone takes away your goods do not ask for them again do to others as you would have them do to you if you love those who love you what credit is that to you for even sinners love those who love them if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you for even sinners do the same if you lend it to those from whom you hope to receive what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much a gain but love your enemies do good and land expecting nothing in return your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful do not judge and you will not be judged do not condemn and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and it will be given to you a good measure pressed down shaken together running over will be put into your lap for the measure you give will be the measure you get back this is the gospel of christ [Music] [Music] let us pray oh lord open to us thy word in our hearts to thy word that we may know thee better and love thee more for thy mercy and for their true sake amen i often say that jesus has a great sense of humor and as i read the words of today's gospel according to luke but i say to you that listen love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who abuse you if anyone strikes you on the cheek offer the other also and from anyone who takes away your quote do not withhold even your shirt give to everyone who begs from you and if anyone takes away your goods do not ask for them again i smh and lol'ed and thought to myself is this still a thing do people really do these things maybe somewhere in the frame print jesus is recorded as shouting hey got ya that was a good one have you met anyone recently who loves their enemies does good to and for them and lens expecting nothing in return after all of my cajoling like the crack of a wit reality hit me this is really not a joke but the ban that we need nationally and globally there is too much injustice too much violence and definitely not enough peace because we do not take jesus's advice to love our enemies in this black history month permit me to share the words of one of its pioneers dr martin luther king jr who in 1957 preached a sermon to our most bitter opponent opponents we say we shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering we shall meet your physical force with soul force do us what you will and we shall continue to love you we cannot in all good conscience obey your unjust laws because non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good throw us in jail and we shall still love you bomb our homes and threaten our children and we shall still love you send your hooded perpetrators of violence into our community at the midnight hour and beat us and leave us half dead and we shall still love you but be assured that we will wear you down by your capacity to suffer one day we shall win freedom but not only for ourselves we shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process and our victory will be a double victory dr king preached on jesus's commandment to love our enemies and suggested that while this is a very difficult thing to do it is both possible and essential for one to live as a good christian or as a good human being it is a shining example of the philosophy of non-violence and christian passivism it simply is the belief that war and violence are unjustifiable and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means it affirms that any form of violence is incompatible with the christian faith christian passivism purports that since jesus was a pacifist his followers must do likewise maybe the christian community in russia and the ukraine can speak an audience with president zielinski and putin miss cesparis i am finnish psalm 107 verse 43 warns that a word to the wise is enough sometimes we fight unnecessarily because it is not for us to fight psalm 37 promises that if we commit our way to the lord and put our trust in him he will make our righteousness as clear as the light because the deliverance of the righteous comes from the lord he is our stronghold in time of trouble the lord will help them and rescue us he will rescue and deliver us from the wicked if we seek with refuge in him but first let us seek to love our enemies dr king further suggested that the first step to loving our enemies is to look deeply at ourselves and recognize that we have good and bad qualities the second step is to acknowledge that in each person we dislike there is still some good qualities that we can admire and love them despite the bad qualities that seem dominant to us nobody is all bad or all good the worst person you can think of has some good in them or is of some good to somebody in the very in that very same sermon dr king coined this very famous quote darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that hate cannot drive hate only love can do that this quote went viral on the internet after the killing of osama bin laden by the u.s government while the mainstream news hailed the killing and many people celebrated the killing as a victory and even danced in the street many others agreed with dr king feeling that no death should ever be celebrated and that responding to violence with violence will never solve our world's problems but as mahatma gandhi one of dr king's primary sources of inspiration said an a for an eye makes the whole world blind my brothers and sisters in christ too many of us are blind or blinding others simply because we think it is natural for us to want to retaliate to pay back those who have wronged us but if we are to prove ourselves to be genuine sons and daughters of a most loving and merciful heavenly father we must display his pacifist character in our actions towards others remember the goal is to win our enemies for christ i wonder how many people here share dr king's sentiments including the belief that jesus was a pacifist what about the story of joseph we heard in our genesis 45 reading how many of us here could have turned the other cheek like joseph did after what his brothers did this was such an enticing opportunity for joseph to reciprocate to make them suffer as he had suffered do unto others as they do unto you is simple justice and has been enshrined in law at least since the code of hammurabi it is recorded as one of the earliest and most complete written legal quotes and was proclaimed by the babylonian king hamurabai who reigned from 1792 to 1750 bc it was a collection of 282 rules established establishing standards for commercial interactions and set fines and punishments to meet the requirements of justice for example it specified the reciprocal action of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth one bible commentator writes is a natural common sense way to order one's life funny enough i read a quote yesterday that advises us to realize that sense is not common so we must educate ourselves in order to have good sense in managing practical matters i am not sure what the author of that court meant by educate by educate but i believe that one should be able to assess analyze reflect investigate or research before making decisions or passing judgments about situations self or others this process is far more enlightened than the aggressive selfish approach that many people prefer today these days everybody seems to be an authority on every subject vaccines protocols constitutional amendments and of course they cannot leave out the latest debate the reopening of school in many cases for their own selfish reasons or for their five minutes of fame don't get me wrong i believe in democracy and freedom of speech but when we speak in public i think we should try to speak sensibly after having done the requisite research but most importantly those of us who are christians must do so mindful that we represent christ remember the goal is to win our enemies for christ those who we oppose are who oppose us thus evangelism must be at the forefront of our interactions with our enemies and there can be no love if there is no mercy do unto others as they do unto you has morphed into do unto others before they do unto you or simply just do on to others just because you can to stroke your ego or for entertainment purposes we live in a world where powerful and wealthy people use their power wealth and influence to accumulate even more power and wealth with little or absolutely no regard for the effect on other people some people tell themselves what is mine is mine and what is yours is mine too in many circles such kravitzer's behavior is not only hardened condoned but is celebrated similar to a game of draughts the winner is the one who commandeers their opponent's pieces or has them for not eating but life is not a game unfortunately in some cases truly evil people people deliberately inflict injury on others for no apparent reason it may be easier to understand someone who would steal something of value it may not be so easy to understand a person who would burn a church because of racial hatred or shoot an innocent person for target practice we live in such a dog-eat-dog world reciprocity is encouraged and most often heralded in the media after all it does not seek to inflict injury except in cases where injury is deserved its goal is fairness the bad person suffers and the good person prospers it is as it should be and yet jesus tells us that reciprocity is not kingdom behavior just as god goes beyond justice to mercy we are to do the same it is a hard lesson one that goes against the grain it is unnatural we can move beyond justice to mercy but only through the grace of god furthermore our gospel reading this week continues the sermon on the level plays that dr rogers referred to in his sermon last week from luke 6 17-26 here jesus is speaking to a large crowd including his disciples people from judea and jerusalem and from the course of tyra and sidon who had come to hear him and to be healed of various diseases this was at a time when many groups believed that the community was to imitate its leader the lucan jesus draws on this principle when grounding the sermon theologically in luke 6 36 the community is to be merciful as god is merciful mercy relates to forgiveness or withholding punishment from people who have wronged you or who deserve it like in that same story of joseph mercy is one of god's primary qualities god the father showed mercy to us when he sacrificed his son jesus on the cross to pay for our sins and still continues to be merciful to us today but the bible also defines mercy beyond forgiveness and withholding punishment god shows his mercy for those who are suffering through healing comfort the alleviation of suffering and caring about those in distress he acts from compassion and acts with mercy mercy and compassion are intertwined mercy is the fruit of compassion mercy is a gift given to someone who is suffering by someone acting with compassion thus the sermon on the level plane offered them and now us guidance on how we can live and witness faithfully in these times bearing in mind christ's second coming to judge luke 6 27 and following but i said to you who here my brothers and sisters in christ we only hear when we listen to jesus's advice verse 27 and 28 love and goodness to your enemies those who hate you curse you and mistreat you jesus and the disciples had enemies too the religious leaders who opposed jesus's ministry and maybe each of us have our own personal enemies as well i honestly i was thinking about it and i honestly cannot think of any that i have that i know of loving them though should involve doing practical acts of goodness towards them actively blessing them and purposefully praying for their welfare so if any of you here are my enemy i dare you to reveal yourself so i can smother you with love and goodness verses 29 and 30 about turning the other cheek and given away your quote or shirt can today be interpreted as the need to practice a natural restraint undeserved kindness and unlimited generosity verse 31 practice the golden rule to everyone simple treat people the same way you want them to treat you this must be intentional for it to be meaningful and it is bound up in the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself the apostle paul summarized the spiritual principles of intentional love in romans 12 17 to 21. never pay back evil for evil to anyone if possible so far as it depends on you be at peace with all men never take your own revenge beloved but leave room for the wrath of god for it is written vengeance is mine i will repay says the lord but if your enemy is hungry make it your business to feed him or her and if he or she is thirsty give him or her a drink do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good remember dr king's famous quote darkness cannot drive old darkness only light can do that hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that but regarding love jesus wants us to step out of our boxes and our circles because if we only love or do good to those who love us what credit is that to us for even sinners do the same if we tend if we lend to those we want something from in the future what credit is that to us sinners do the same instead we must love our enemies do good and land expecting nothing in return your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as our father is merciful we're a pritchard a primes that god specializes in being kind to the unkind and showing mercy to mean people he specializes in showering grace upon sinners and he loves to turn enemies into friends when we love our enemies we too are showing forth the character of god to the world this proves that we are sons and daughters by revealing that we are truly like him in character and in action my brothers and sisters in christ showing love and mercy to our enemies does not always have to involve grand moments or gestures but it always treats the position of influence authority or power it acts from gently love embraces and mercy makes room for others sometimes mercy means choosing not to complain to the restaurant manager when the service you received was lacking that is the mercy of kindness sometimes mercy means not making it difficult for the person who offended you to apologize that is mercy of forgiveness sometimes mercy means correcting someone gently and not acting smug or vindictive that is the mercy of grace sometimes mercy means helping a poor person or apparel escape poverty or substance abuse that is the mercy of compassion love requires us to respond to them as real people we can all disagree but we are indeed all god's children loving your enemies means making an effort to understand them why did jesus ask us to do such a thing because it's an avenue for us to grow as christians i have discovered that people who get us all welled up aren't necessarily across the world our country they might be sitting in the next spew occupying the same office or even sharing the same bed who better to start praying for if we desire to be loved and shown mercy shouldn't we try to understand others and offer the same may almighty god grant us the strength and courage to love and be merciful to others as he willingly shows to us amen [Music] let us now reaffirm our faith in our loving and merciful god who willingly reaches out to us every moment of our lives and let us endeavor to extend that love and mercy to others as we recite and reaffirm our faith in the words of the nicene creed we believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen or unseen we believe in one lord jesus christ the only son of god eternally begotten of the father god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made one in being with the father for him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven by the power of the holy spirit he was born of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered died and was back on the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end we believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father with the father and son he is worshiped and glorified he has spoken through the prophets we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen intercession form b father we pray for your holy catholic church grant that every member of the church may truly and humbly serve you we pray for all bishops priests and deacons pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world give us grace to do your will and all that we undertake have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or sorrow or troubles or give to the departed eternal rest we praise you for your sins who have entered into joy let us pray for our own needs and those of others almighty god to whom our needs are known before we act help us to ask only what occurs to your will and the good things which we dare not or in our blindness cannot ask grant us for the sake of your son jesus christ o lord amen they are the benefits if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us if we confess our sins god is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness the moment of silence let us bring our personal transgressions before almighty god remember especially the times when we failed to show mercy when we failed to extend the hand of love for our enemies and those who persecute us and we remember our lord's words to his disciples freely you have received and now together let us confess our sins most merciful god we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word and deed by what we have done and by what we have left on them we have not loved you with our whole heart we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves we have not loved ourselves as we all we are truly sorry and we humbly repent for the sake of your son jesus christ have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways the glory of your name amen almighty god have mercy upon you pardon and deliver you from all your sins confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal through jesus christ our lord we are the body of christ by the one spirit we were all baptized into one body and have all been made to drink of the one spirit let us then pursue the things that made for peace and build up the common life the peace of the lord be always with you
