a wild storm battered west auckland on the night of august the 15th 1980 as rain pelted down on the tin roof of 70 canal road six-year-old alicia o'reilly kissed her mother goodnight and went to bed alicia shared a bedroom with her eight-year-old sister juliette in the early hours juliet awoke to wind on her face and found their bedroom window open when morning came alicia appeared to be sleeping in but the little girl would never wake again she had been brutally raped and murdered in her own bed while her sister slept just a meter away despite a massive manhunt by police 25 years on the killer of six-year-old alicia o'reilly is still at large tonight two psychics will lead a team of investigators in a search for new clues yeah oh yeah then i can pick up on but she doesn't want to go down there using only their psychic ability they will assist in the hunt for alicia's killer she's a pretty little thing pretty pretty she's just a little dagged man she's a hard case thing she was quite a tomboy really unless you're wearing a dance if i said she was strangled would that be on the right track they either smothered her or something in the bedroom because i haven't got her alive a bump in the night bizarre's probably not the right word it was just terrific they're putting something on her face geez that's heavy just through there i think he got in the back it is a mother's nightmare when you think there is something wrong with your child and you cannot get to them [Music] the passing years have done little to numb the pain felt by alicia's mother nancy it's been a very very hard 25 years it's been a very long journey of one of healing but it never ever quite goes away you know coming out to the cemetery and seeing the stone and knowing that they're both here yeah i still feel very sad alicia's murder was the first of a string of heartbreaking tragedies endured by nancy o'reilly who has lost not one but three daughters seven years after alicia's murder fifteen-year-old juliet was killed by a drunk driver three years later baby kimberly died when she was just six hours old all nancy has now is memories alicia as a child was hard work a bundle of energy when alicia was awake everyone in the house was awake she was naughty mischievous but extremely loving until it was quite completed she was not much of a reader liked a television light to school although i must say that the only school report that i ever got for alicia was mrs o'reilly alicia is going to be very good at parties when she gets older nancy was a solo mother struggling on a benefit to raise her daughters two months before alicia's murder nancy had a nervous breakdown alicia was extremely concerned with my health so she'd write me little notes you know mummy i love you i love you very much and she couldn't spell much right she'd always put match she had this fascination for pills for tablets of any kind so most of her life was spent going in and out of accident emergency rooms because she decided that she wanted to take this particular pill let's see what happens alicia's death was no childhood accident it was the result of a calculated and disturbing home invasion the residents of 70 canal road could never have foreseen the tragedy to come as they settled in for a quiet friday night at home in the house and canal road i had a boyfriend at the time called nigel i lived with a young woman called isabelle isabelle's boyfriend was called jimmy nigel came in jimmy came in we settled in for a night of watching television what are you eating and so half past eight after the jokes have hazard off i said come on girls into bed off to bed now alicia do not take the cat to bed thump goes the cat on the floor she came into the lounge kissed everyone that was in the lounge happily merely skipped up the hallway into bed yelling at me mummy can you put my ballerina quilt on by midnight all four adults and the girls were fast asleep nancy and her boyfriend nigel were sleeping in the bedroom directly opposite elisha and juliet's i had in the house a window that was nailed shut with a piece of wood so that the cats could get in and out so when i was awoken at around five i think in the morning i thought it was the cats getting in and out of the out of the open window at 8 30 a.m nancy got up and found juliette playing in the lounge i actually asked her still asleep is your sister awake she went no mommy she's asleep and i thought oh thank god she's asleep i can go back to bed i can go back and just get a little bit of peace and quiet and from where i was sitting in the bed i could see directly into alicia's room and i could see the bundle wrapped up in blankets and thinking oh this is good this is good at 9 30 a.m a friend of nancy's came to visit can you check on alicia for me oh yeah sure i did not actually see big jim pull the blankets back but i did see the look on his face and when i saw the look on big jim's face nigel it was just instant could you come in here mate then and only then did i know that something was wrong nigel i was up out of that bed it was like cold water had been thrown over me obviously nigel knew that something was dreadfully wrong because he met me at the door and i physically pushed him out of the way it is a mother's nightmare when you think there is something wrong with your child and you cannot get to them i can't describe the feeling of standing at the end of the bed and seeing her face and knowing that there was nothing that i could do as a mother as her protector to bring her back next a murder investigation swings into action and a bizarre dream puts a local man under the police spotlight it was somewhat of a contradiction to see a quiet peaceful scene in such a horrendously violent act it was just absolute and total confusion six-year-old alicia o'reilly was raped and murdered in her own bed while her family slept her lifeless body was not found until the following morning it was just absolute and total confusion i remember running out into the hallway hearing a woman screaming and i wasn't even aware that it was me that was screaming isabelle came out of her room and i remember screaming at isabelle alicia's dead alicia's dead at first nancy feared that her young daughter had swallowed a fatal overdose of pills i went running into the dining room where was the first aid kit i had it right up on top of a wardrobe so that she couldn't get into it it was safe and secure back into the bedroom looking at her and knowing that there was just nothing that i could do to bring it back detective sergeant stuart alsop smith is currently in charge of the murder inquiry in 1980 he was one of the first young detectives to arrive at the crime scene well canal road was a quite sort of residential area in avondale very much a working class area the house was was fairly run down but otherwise it was it was a normal suburban sort of house the police investigation tried to retrace the killer's movements under cover of darkness in a violent storm it appears the killer entered the house and crept past the room where nancy and her partner were sleeping he slipped silently into the girl's bedroom retired assistant police commissioner barry matthews was head of the original inquiry into alicia's murder prior to the attack it would seem that the offender has in fact reached up and undone the light bulb if the window was not already opened opened it and thrown that light bulb out over into the long grass the offender has smothered or in some way stopped alicia awakening by either putting the hand across the mouth or a pillow case something like that and then at about that time has then raped alicia alicia died of suffocation in her bed and had been sexually assaulted she was lying on her left side her right arm was across the chest she was fully clothed in her bed clothes and there was a blanket and duvet that were partly covering her but it was somewhat of a contradiction to see a quiet peaceful scene and such a horrendously violent act that obviously occurred with a sister alongside an adjacent bed the injuries were such that a person would would call out with the pain of it all and no one heard that call the combination of the assault and the smothering has caused her death and then after that the offender has pulled up her pants covered her over with the the blanket and the duvet and then has left the scene a scene examination could not reveal for certain how the killer got into the house there was an external toilet and so it we couldn't exclude the possibility that someone had gone to the toilet during the night one of the adults and leaving it unlocked inadvertently could have been a possibility it is likely the killer escaped through the girls bedroom window juliet woken up with the wind on her face because it was a very stormy night and she'd gotten up she'd yelled out to alicia alicia get up please and shut the window and had no reply from alicia so she walked over to the bedroom window and shuttered herself strong winds and torrential rain played a significant part on that fateful night with an old house there was a lot of noise and movement and that obviously assisted the offender it probably also assisted the offender and not leaving prince because the person's hands may have been wet however the killer did leave behind a crucial piece of forensic evidence the pathologist found her hair during the post-mortem there there was a pubic hair that was found in the crease crease of the top of alicia's legs using nuclear technology scientists tested the hair and made a significant discovery that person would have been exposed to heavy metals five types of heavy metal were present in the hair one called antimony was rare and was only used in two industries pottery and paint finally the police had a breakthrough police thought the killer may have been exposed to antimony while scraping old paint from houses there was other forensic evidence seminal staining that that was examined the swabs were taken and there was semen found inside her and also in her panties and also on the the sheet that she was lying on tests on the killer semen revealed his blood group was shared by only eight percent of the population police set about trying to find someone with that blood group whose hair also tested positive for the heavy metal compounds they began by investigating known sex offenders and men who knew alicia all the occupants of the house were interviewed and were eliminated as possible suspects and in the end we had about 650 named and unnamed suspects this is someone who has been watching us this is someone that has been watching the children we had two sightings really one from a newspaper boy that had seen a polynesian male dressed in an army coat and dark trousers holding a duffle bag outside the house at 6 30 in that morning there was early morning movements in that particular area because of people going to early shift at factories and that sort of thing we had also from another neighbour three reported sightings of someone very similar to that at different times there the night before the murder and in earlier times i had underwear stolen from the line i had a ladder put up against the window where alicia actually saw her face at the window there were a lot of reports of prowlers and people around that area prior to the murder during their investigations police came across a 23 year old polynesian man who lived in canal road he made a shocking admission quite bizarrely the person talked about having had a dream about a boy of about eight years of age entering the house and murdering and raping alicia riley he initially started off relying about what he'd seen in the dream and then eventually he admitted that he was he was the person and that it was actually him that went into the house and raped and murdered alicia o'reilly so we had the confession there that he was the one that had done it the difficulty we had of course is that he was mentally feeble and it was a bit like getting an admission of an eight-year-old child just the question is how reliable is it when they showed me a photo of this young man i said it's not him it's not him gut feeling again one of the things that was interesting is that the hair sample we took off him was of all the hair samples we took the one that had the highest degree of probability with matching the one on alicia's leg the suspect had the same blood group as the killer but when scientists retested his hair they found it didn't match the hair found on alicia the reliability of such testing has since come into question and unfortunately the testing process destroyed the killer's hair so forensically the young man from canal road could not be totally eliminated of more recent times a another suspect was nominated whose identity i know obviously but that cannot be resolved the second suspect cannot be eliminated because he is dead according to standard procedure at the time five years after alicia's murder all forensic evidence relating to her killer was destroyed dna profiling was invented soon after well i was very frustrated when dna was discovered of course because if we'd had dna it would have made it so much easier for us to exclude people and if we'd got the offender to in fact convict that person next two psychics take us back to the night of alicia's death to search for new leads she's saying that i'm cold i'm damn i'm inside i can't see it's dark a lot happened in that bedroom for her in 1980 an intruder crept into a suburban auckland house he then raped and murdered a six-year-old girl the killer of alicia o'reilly has evaded capture for 25 years tonight two psychics will turn to the spirit world in search of new leads which could bring that brutal killer to justice if i saw him i'd numb he came this way a new zealand and an australian psychic have been selected to investigate the murder 70 psychics from across new zealand were tested a little known solved murder was chosen for the testing procedure presented with only a photograph of the victim the psychics were asked to produce details of the crime the location and the killer of the 70 psychics tested only three were able to describe intimate details of the case one of these calvin crookshank has been chosen to investigate alicia's murder calvin works full-time as a psychic medium he acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms to provide comfort for those who have lost loved ones if people in spirit want to come through to be seen they will manifest themselves so that i can see them if they just want me to hear them then that's what they'll do they want me to feel their presence in the room they'll do that as well 100 australian psychics were also tested only five were able to provide intimate details of the obscure solved murder used in the testing procedure one of these psychics deb webber will assist in the alicia o'reilly case deb webber has worked on a number of murder inquiries in australia for deb the spirit world is as tangible as ours they pushed me around like now they i have i communicate with spirit is through feeling them sensing touch smell taste visions flashes visions so i see them i hear them i can't say that i've ever solved a case through the use of a psychic i believe there are charlatans but i also believe that there are people in our society that do know things that we don't know the psychics know they are working on an unsolved murder but they have not been given any details of the case or the people involved they have never met and have been kept separate from each other at all times the psychics have been kept under constant supervision to prevent them researching the case only positive statements were confirmed during the readings each psychic has been filmed in one day deb is given a photo of alicia which he chooses to keep face down i am picking up a woman but i keep picking up a child in the room talk to me come talk to me friendly in the street whoever this person was knew the neighbours everyone knew who this person was still got a lot of friendliness homelessness [Music] alicia was well known in the neighborhood she often stood near the letterbox and chatted to the locals kelvin is also offered alicia's photo like deb he chooses not to look at it i kind of think that i haven't looked at the photo yet but the feeling was female and she was a little shy so i didn't know whether i should talk to her or not so i just thought well i'll wait i just need one key thing can i have a first name it's a female oh aleisha alicia let me in let me where are you alicia feels like she's around about five years old she's tiny i keep doing the grabbing my fingers of the three so there's three so significant whether she was a third child or one of three because i keep doing this because it's important alicia was the first of nancy's three daughters to die she's light-skinned that i can see here because she's got the hand coming in that's the same color hand as mine she's got tiny little fingers little nails calvin looks at alicia's photo for the first time she's just standing over here in the corner now and she's indicating her coloring in skills are really good she's also talking about what now as in the program so what now i've got to go into the 80s alicia was murdered in 1980 a young girl who had absolute wings on this sort of life a very comforting person always caring very nurturing very pet orientated a lot happened in that bedroom for her why does she say she's five [Music] she's older than five she said six she's got a sister she's got more than one though [Music] said three alicia looks like a jay to me jay alicia shared a bedroom with her older sister juliette the saturday may be significant for the time of the week too who knows she's saying it was dark she says the wee hours so i could have been closer to dawn because of the change of light the coroner stated that alicia was murdered in the early hours of saturday morning her bed's like that corner like that and the other bed somewhere over here where's she taking over here there seems to be another bed in there i'm just looking at bed spreads all i'm seeing is pillows bed springs sheets she keeps saying whoa whoa wall bed another bed or something here and then the door the psychics have accurately described the girl's bedroom she's saying that i'm cold i'm damn i'm inside i can't see it's dark [Music] and i've got wetness so it may have been raining or the place is really damp dark she's going it's dark but it's dark outside not inside well the lights are off so it's all dark now [Applause] well she gave me a picture of a key and then the door so it seems like it's easy to get through it seems like there's no broken entry just crept in my mum was at the home when she was taken and she's inside though i can't get her outside i can see him both inside was there something to do with one day she keeps showing me the window [Music] it's like sneaking around whoever whoever went into the house was sneaking around in the house i don't think the mother knew because i keep getting her in a different area of the house but i i know i just got this funny feeling that something just did something disturbed something moves something i shouldn't use the word something but there's a disturbance it's all right alicia it's all right sweetie i'm in there the door closed the door was actually closed the psychics have been told nothing about the location of alicia's murder yet they have sensed that her bedroom is significant and both psychics have picked up on an intruder in the house next the psychics relive elisha's last moments i've got a body beside the bed leaning over her she wants to cut off my windpipe psychics deb and calvin know that they're investigating an unsolved murder but they've been told nothing about the crime both have correctly identified that an intruder has entered the house while alicia o'reilly and her family were sleeping i feel there's only one person one male 1 sneaking around a room and i've got a body beside the bed leaning over her okay i can't you can obviously understand not being able to defend herself i feel like i'm being overpowered [Music] did you wake up take me back she got a very sore neck okay i don't understand she wants to cut off my windpipe she wants to choke me she's not trying to hurt me but i think that's how she passed through and strangled she only woke up when something was on her face because her eyes she couldn't talk she couldn't scream or anything over her mouth the blankets pulled back she's talking about her underwear well she gave me the pictures she holds them up [Music] whoever it was must have raped her [Music] she just said don't talk about it it's just like a bloody horror movie to be honest with you okay i just feel like the possibilities there that they're just i still feel like she's getting smothered somehow while she's in the bed because she's dying in a sense i can't breathe and that's why the stabbing feelings but it's not a knife or anything it's more the um she's raped in her bed i feel as if she was molested or interfered with you know it's the last thing we need to hear about a child i asked alicia who found her and all i got was an image of a back of a male nigel the back of the head of a male that found her again she brings back that jay so i don't know if there's a james or a jimmy connected somewhere along the lines she won't let me go outside because she was found in the home in her bed still deceased the psychics have correctly identified how alicia was killed her body was found by big jim a friend of nancy's now the psychics ask alicia to describe the man who murdered her cassie it's dark i've got to turn the light on there's y'all turn the light on yeah give me a really good picture of him she's showing most ash but still must have had dark in his skin somehow because it's not just tan he's known local not far he's been arrested before watches from window he had to mow side burns but only halfway down towards the ear older bloke that's done this shift work away working not home he's got frown line very quite deep brown line um between his eyebrows can he hear music party visit he has his lips very thin i can't get i can't get the thickness in his lip especially his top lip he's got a bit of uh shiny paint painter painter she leads me to take the point of saying um inside jail or released and then reoffender that's a that's a strong point and then there's this overwhelming feeling of a predator repetitive what's the word you call it pedophile he knew that she was there but the timing from when he first saw alicia to the point of this happening there wasn't that much time in amongst that maybe three weeks again she keeps saying party party party for the first time alicia o'reilly has been able to provide a detailed description of the man who murdered her now six-year-old alicia reveals how the killer entered and left the house i feel like i'm just at a door at the moment the two steps in feel like it's really open at the back of the house this is like a ceiling so if i'm at the door i'm i've got the roof over me she's showing me the door the door's all dark so i think he went out the window because i keep getting the window window window window window i feel like i've come through the door and i'm out the window he's running though he's on his feet he's not in the car there would have been vehicles somewhere i'd say i'm not sure but it has to be somewhere but there's not it's not in front of the house it's up around the corner i go out the driveway i go left i go two blocks one two but he moved he's gone she's going like that she's showing me the silos halos i don't know what you call them i feel like i'm looking at a shoot in a factory there seems to be a big staircase on the outside have you got a company here that's ipa or something it's just i asked her for a symbol or something of who he works for and it looks like ipa he must have taken something something not right in the room itself there's something moved something something's missing or something's been moved there are photos she showed me a photo of her so he could have taken something personal of hers he took photos trophy because i feel like he swooped something up next the psychics ask the spirit of six-year-old alicia to guide them to her house i'm quite drawn to here auckland is home to over a million people and covers a vast area we give deb a map and challenge her to pinpoint where alicia was killed i keep having to move to the side though of the map but rose bank hall at the hendersons what did you say rose bank [Music] i think henderson valley is too far out she's got me in here somewhere deep has indicated the areas of rose bank road and avondale alicia lived in avondale and attended rosebank primary school we drive depth to canal road where alicia died oh my god they all do look the same on a different day we drive calvin to canal road in this side sweaty kelvin reacts as he passes alicia's house oh geez that's heavy just through there oh yeah i feel sick again um i can't distinguish where i'm at calvin has asked to get out of the car a little bit shaky i guess i'm just going to go for a little walk well i don't know i'm quite drawn to here calvin is walking back towards alicia's house see i've got the heart racing the can't breathe feeling nauseous standing here calvin is standing directly opposite alicia's house deb is also in canal road i feel sick deb has just passed alicia's house she must have played here she must have had friends here there's some reference to this bit there so she gets upset here it's either that one or this one that one that one that one that one i think it's that one guided by the spirit of alicia o'reilly psychics deb and calvin have found the house where the six-year-old met her death in 1980 in the psychic realm buildings are said to retain an emotional imprint of their past occupants someone who dies violently is said to leave an even stronger imprint because we were unable to gain access to alicia's home the psychics are asked to tune in from the outside come over here ashley ash ashman ash i'm the perpetrator now okay [Music] i've plotted this i've worked it out as far as being the perpetrator i'm gonna head down this way yeah it's this one yeah but she doesn't want me to go near it i know i'm know that like she's pulling me back this wasn't here so it was easy to access gone through the back door into the room i think he got in the back not this center of the house up the other other side of the house because she take me around the back of the house and then he's coming in which one is your room which one is your room she likes this side of the house because this is her side deb is correct alicia's bedroom was on this side of the house she must have got out the front window another side window police believe the killer did escape through the front window it came out the driveway because i saw him coming out the driveway i didn't cut in front of the house so went this way ash ash street ash that's the ash i kept getting deb turns off canal road into wyrow avenue he knew someone here it feels like he must have had contacts here anyway like he either knew someone in one of these houses just here yeah no he got into a vehicle or something here there's something here [Music] it doesn't feel like his car's out of the ordinary being here i feel really really really really sick when i say the name john john john returning to the place of her murder was difficult for six-year-old alicia but in doing so she has provided the psychics with a number of leads that could be significant next a team of investigators follow up those leads please confirm something was taken deb came up with the name of the man she believed killed alicia by tuning into the spirit of alicia o'reilly psychics deb and kelvin have come up with many key facts about the case that match those revealed through police investigations they have also produced new information that may be relevant to the case former detective duncan holland heads a team of investigators my team has examined the psychics findings and has come up with some intriguing new information in the alicia o'reilly case we had so much trouble with browers i still believe the man that raped and murdered alicia was a stranger nancy o'reilly remains convinced that the man who murdered her daughter had been stalking them the psychics agreed he knew that there was a little girl in the house been arrested before watches from a window i keep getting like a cat burglar like a burger watches places talks them a bit all i know is that the time when i lived in canal road i had underwear stolen from the line more disturbingly alicia had complained of a man peering in her bedroom window this is someone that has been watching the children i feel like the person stalked it out there wasn't that much time in amongst that maybe three weeks it's premeditated it's all organized in the weeks prior to the murder a number of people came to look through alicia's house which the council had put on the market it's possible the killer was among them because it was not standard council procedure to keep records of those who visited we were unable to pursue this line of inquiry she showed me a photo of her so he could have taken something personal of whose took photos trophy both psychics thought it was possible that the killer stole a photo of alicia police confirmed something was taken but for evidential reasons won't say what it was both psychics thought that the killer had committed other offences she leads me to take the point of saying um inside jail or release and then re-offend it i think he's done this before what's the word you call it pedophile we were quite concerned to find that there were a number of people that had sex offense sex offending records that had lived relatively close to the crime scene the psychics identified some local street names that could be relevant to the case while tracking the killer's movements after the murder deb was drawn to a nearby street ashley ash ashtray ash that's the ash i kept getting further investigations have revealed that in 1980 there was a halfway house in ash street where recently released prisoners lived this rose rose bank can hear music party visit interestingly our research into the local area identified this former party house on rosebank road again she keeps saying party party party there is a strong possibility that the offender had links to both the halfway house in ash street and the rose bank road party house shift work away working not home the working class suburb of avondale where alicia lived was home to many shift workers show me paint painter forensic tests on the killer's hair showed he had been exposed to heavy metals found in old paint i feel like i'm looking at a shoot in a factory i can't distinguish whether it's a concrete one or a wood one because it's very dusty it seems to be a big staircase on the outside we searched the surrounding suburbs for a similar factory and found this one a nearby glen eden which closely resembles calvin's description in 1980 this chemical factory manufactured a product called ipa ipa contains antimony forensic tests on the killer's hair left on alicia showed that the hair was contaminated with uncommonly high levels of antimony i feel really really really really sick when i say the name john john deb came up with the name of the man she believed killed alicia our investigations have revealed that a man with a similar name had ties to the local chemical industry in 1980 we will pass his details onto police it's taken 25 painful years but nancy o'reilly has come to terms with the loss of alicia incredibly nancy is prepared to forgive the man who murdered alicia but to forgive him she must first discover his identity with alicia i have this nameless faceless person it is a shadow in the dark this man is still anonymous to me [Music] i miss her cuddles i miss the fact that i wasn't able to see you grow up and do all those normal things that children and young people before they reach adulthood so that's what i really really miss i just miss her [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] you
