ah ah hi everyone 35 year old here the internet's busiest music nerd and it's time for a review of the new cemetery record rainbow bridge 3. this is the newest mixtape the third in the rainbow bridge series from west coast rapper cemetery who in the past couple of years has prolifically jammed out a dense series of tapes and ep a lot of singles too let me first start by saying that cemetery has a very unique aesthetic a box cutter wielding greasy white boy decked out in true religion from head to toe his mixtape and single covers consistently land somewhere between like a black metal record and also like a uh no limit album cover and these places are actually where a lot of cemeteries artistic affinities lie to the sound of this tape is pretty uniform for the hour that it lasts but still the sound it delivers is a little difficult to put into a nutshell but here it goes let's first note that trap music is obviously a huge influence on this record not just any trap music though but the earliest and rawest days of the chicago drill scene think chief keef but if it were a deep fried bass boosted meme or had the brittle veneer of a norwegian black metal record from the 90s on top of that you're getting these constant nods across this tape to very raw low budget dap pif style mixtapes especially with all of the dj sorrow drops dj sorrow laughing through the pain there are also modern horror core vibes coming through on a lot of the lyrics but somehow the material here ends up sounding freakier than much of what i've heard from suicide boys or even bones as of late while also being kind of tongue-in-cheek and light-hearted about it as there are numerous bars here about just kind of casually reading or just referencing the necronomicon or on the track come with me to hell haunted mound boys with those scary box cutters haunted mound girls kill you with a damn chainsaw on the song murder ride he says i live i die i live again coming with my army of skellingtons jack skellington or on the track chainsaw party i'm a rocker i'm a roller out of controller i don't care about sleep no more i'm [ __ ] thugging haunted mound we will never be sorry 20 naked hoes want a chainsaw party but then again there are some genuinely unsettling portrayals of what seems like a decomposition and unwanted tooth removal on the track tooth taker effectively a sort of very sad dark ballad for the record which features some acoustic guitar strumming in the background this track was also featured on cemetery's rainbow bridge 2 tape so digging through these lyrics and looking at the aesthetics of this project it is clear that cemetery is a student of horror and not just the film genre's camp but also its psychological thrills and power to disturb i also want to note that aesthetically there are definitely some parallels between this and blades music as well really the whole drained style like if you could come up with a very goth centric version of that drainer sound i think cemetery would definitely be it so those are some of the genre influences and i guess major compositional and thematic components of this project but that doesn't even begin to describe the literal sound of it which could take up a whole another section of this video and another video because man it is quite a sound this is handily the most compressed distorted blasted out thing i've heard this year we'll most likely hear all year and uh will be the case for the hip-hop genre i think for a bit as this project also lands aesthetically somewhere between being an industrial hip-hop record but also like a straight noise album with a touch of witch house 2 in a way i kind of wish this record is what witch house was originally about or trying to achieve it's kind of odd it's taken this long to get a an album even referencing or being parallel to that genre that bangs this hard so yes the distortion and bass on this tape is just so saturated track for track for track for track but the vocals are like a monster of their own to take it back to that chief keef reference i was making earlier one of the components of that are the vocals that kind of deadpan monotone very like back of your throat delivery that keith had like on that finally rich era that's very much in spades here but again the vocals are treated very differently effects and mix-wise now given how distorted everything i've described instrumentally is it's miraculous the vocals cut through as well as they do on these songs because they they really do shine they really do pop but that's as a result of like auto tune and what sounds like three different phasers or something uh between the vocals and the beats and the distortion and all the compression this thing is just so relentless it's so grating it's just so oppressive with the first handful of tracks on this project being some of the most distorted on the entire thing i think maybe as a way of warding off anybody who just might not vibe with this sort of stuff but miraculously the the beats in the bass once my brain kind of acclimated to all the distortion like they really do translate as do the hooks on this thing murder ride murder ride necromancer and that's the other thing i mean cemetery's not just kind of bs'ing his way through a lot of these tracks there are legitimate choruses written for pretty much every song here yeah sure they're distorted as hell and they're delivered with these monotone vocals just slathered in so many effects but there is quite a bit of structure which honestly makes this a lot more listenable than you would think with the choruses being so infectious and the songs being so well paced and and put together uh it's it's almost like these tracks fly by even though they are so abrasive and they are so distorted but look i'm not trying to misrepresent this record or make it seem like it has an appeal that it doesn't true it does work with a very unique condition of sounds but as far as execution and vibe goes here it's pretty simple and straightforward this is really some chilling in the graveyard with your homies type [ __ ] blasting this out of the back of a hearse that is hooked up with giant subs type [ __ ] i'm not trying to take away from the nuances that this project offers in its seas of distortion whether that be the screeching synthesizers on skin carver the searing vocal distortion on me by the river the black metal vibes on the truey jeans intro or the beautiful melodic dirge that happens at the end of the final track crucifixion but if you give this thing a listen and you have a reaction to it it's most likely going to be a visceral one to just how explosive loud gruesome and depraved it is if you're not getting something out of that you're most likely not going to be getting much look i think this thing is great i love this thing i love the [ __ ] out of this thing i think it goes hard i think it's incredible i think it's an exciting project but dare i say into the future it might be nice to i don't know hear just a little bit a tad bit more space in the mix to maybe slip in some other nuances or something like that i don't know just a thought just a suggestion but as is right now this thing totally freaking rips i just can't get enough of it it's just melting my brain every time i put it on dj sorrow i'm feeling a strong eight to a light nine on this thing damn uh tran position have you given this tape a listen did you love it did you hate it what would you rate it you're the best you're the best what should i review next hit the like if
