[Music] foreign [Music] here on the sea Piper named Cavendish this is my boat and it's Hall number 14. I owned it for about six months now I took delivery in Long Beach California at its first Shakedown Cruise was up the coast into San Francisco Bay where we are now uh it's a beautiful Saturday it's Fourth of July weekend actually and I've got it with me uh Jeff Eaton uh filming so this whole number 14 was the last boat to be produced overseas and now the next one called number 15 is nearing completion in Anacortes Washington so I'll give you a few particulars on the boat this is a fiberglass hole full full displacement 35 feet long and more like 36 feet long and a eight foot six inch beam it's powered by a single diesel engine it's called a beta 85 that's 85 horsepower that's four cylinders there is a turbo on it and it's all mechanical by design that is the only engine option so there really is no option you get the beta 85. um why that engine it's because uh this boat will take you far and wide it has a range of 2000 nautical miles carrying 200 gallons of fuel so with that kind of range you'll find yourself in some far-flung places and when things go wrong as they eventually will with anything man-made you're probably going to need to be able to fix it yourself you can't have someone fly out with a laptop from uh you know from Volvo Penta or cummins or something if you're in a remote region such as the Arctic so as an amateur mechanic I would be able to fix this uh this engine if it ever needs repair so two fuel tanks totaling 200 gallons that's 100 in each side uh you manually select the port and starboard tank selector valve water you've got two Wing tanks uh 40 gallons each so totaling 80 gallons this boat has a center cockpit and it's a wide open area it's uh seating for six comfortably on two bench seats and very easy water Ingress and egress um no boarding ladder but you hardly even need it because you're so close to the water level the weight of the boat is uh nine ton with tanks filled and most cruising gear on it uh cruising speed uh I usually find something like six to seven to be uh plenty efficient and comfortable I couldn't I can top out it closer to 10. uh but with the full displacement Hull you can add more power without getting very much more speed so 85 horse is honestly uh is plenty enough any more power and you're just gonna be uh lifting the battle up higher it's going to sound inefficient feel it efficient more vibration and it's you just don't need it you know if you're if you're into into a trawler you've got to know that the journey is a destination it's you're not you're not going to get anywhere very fast but you will get there reliably uncomfortably and also very safely uh my particular boat is equipped with the electronic Suite so that includes the Raymarine chart plotter autopilot bow thruster uh Doppler radar and also AIS so these are Ray Marine Products it's my first experience with Raymarine I like them just fine I'm more familiar with Garmin units but rain rain is seem seems to be doing a great job I do like that the screen is All Glass touch screen there's there's no there's no rubber buttons where you can get you know dust and grease and dirt and stuff just really easy to keep clean responds great too so as I'm at the helm I've got the engine control panel it's pretty basic so it's got engine speed it's got water temperature I've got a stop solenoid and I've got an ignition key for off on start and also to heat to preheat aside from that I've got four lights that will tell the anything else that's going wrong such as uh low battery voltage low oil pressure high temperature and whether or not the uh whether or not the charging system is working windless is also electric so I can control it from just right here makes it awfully easy and of course I can Freewheel it from from up at the bow I chose to have 300 feet of 5 16 G4 change that's high high test chain and it matches this uh this windless Gypsy perfectly never had it skip or do anything it shouldn't I've also tied that into a rockna anchor I think it's a 33 kilogram anchor so it's about the biggest that you would want for this size boat it's it's a bit oversized but as a Seasoned Mariner I would rather have oversized than under size super happy with the rock and it performs great and it does fit up there quite perfectly it's not it does appear like it's too big or anything so the C Piper has a full peel um and uh all the way aft uh level with the uh the swim platform is where you've got the rudder it's a Rudder called it with clear thistle Rudder it's also a high lift design so it's particularly effective when you've got very little water flowing over the rudder it's just now what I would call oversized so even at slow speeds maneuvering in a harbor for example you have very impressive Rudder Authority the propeller is a four blade 22 inch and the length of the shaft outside of the boat is oh less than six inches uh so you've got enough room to put on a shaft sink and I've also installed a device called a shaft shark which is a propeller line cutter so if I have a run over line say a crab pot the serrated teeth will theoretically chew through the line and I don't have to uh dive down and clear it so all the accommodation of this vessel is forward it's in the forward one third at the length of the boat to get there you go through the center cockpit which is uh open air go through the sliding aluminum door and take three steps down and then you're presented with a double v birth uh sleeps too comfortably one person you've got all the room you could ever need Headroom is a plenty you you've got no issue with banging your head down there there's a space on either side to put items such a foot glass of water whatever you might need um so I kind of treat those as a night table I've also got a closet uh in which there's a uh Iraq for putting hangers I've got uh and then three more storage actually four more storage areas uh I use that for things like towels uh laundry computer blankets things like that underneath the v-birth cushions there's two storage cavities what I use them for is actually storing my dinghy so my dinghy rolls will uh will deflate and can then fit in two bags two two heavy duffel bags and they actually fit really nicely in those two storage compartments there is a bilge pump in that compartment that's one of five or six watertight compartments uh [Music] also there's a shower sump uh within that same Village area the shower uh and head apartment has a sliding door that that can be locked in the open or closed position so there's space for all your toiletries around stainless steel sink and of course the electric head um since you're showering in that space is meant to get completely wet with water so there's a nice little cover that works brilliantly for covering the roll of toilet paper so you don't get that all softly wet uh I'm quite comfortable standing when I'm showering I found I've got great water pressure uh [Music] I've never had a problem running out of hot water and if I'm underway I might choose to sit down and shower thusly just so I don't uh fall over and you know lose my pudding there's a solar powered vent so that's a little exhaust fan so anytime the sun's out it is sucking a gentle breeze through that exhaust fan there's also a porthole all these portholes are secured by two knobs and you can dial in the the compression force from the glass onto the uh the frame of the port hole so there is ample ventilation and there's also plenty of storage underneath the sink and also uh behind the behind the sink the center cockpit is where guests mostly find themselves uh choosing to sit it's a nice open area there's also the main Machinery compartment access so there's two latches you lift it up and gas gas assisted struts will do the most of the work for you and then keep that hatch you can then go down two steps and you'll Now find yourself in the Machinery compartment I've seen Machinery compartment because it's more than just an engine room of course the engine is midship down there it's worth noting that the shaft angle is only the angle of the propeller shaft is only one half of one degree so it's not like what you might typically find on a sailboat or another uh power boat it's it's so close to level and that really lends itself to efficiency it's one of the many things that makes this phone as efficient as it is engine uh you've got uh you've got an electrical panel to starboard it's a beautiful panel that's covered by a clear sliding glass doors and that's where all your blue see uh automatic relays exist and all your conductors and things again in the mid uh in a midship you've got the house battery Bank this is uh 400 amp hours I've chosen uh wet lead acid batteries for the bat I've got the sea keeper stabilizer which is partially the size of of if you imagine two toaster ovens it's about that size although it weighs four to five hundred pounds that lives amidst and is structurally attached to the stringers to starboard I've got a 2200 watt pure sine wave inverter that changes all that 12 volt DC power into 120 volt uh alternating current power adjacent to the inverter is the uh engine battery bank which consists of one 12 volt battery which can be combined or isolated from the house battery Bank have to worry about drawing down my engine start battery as I'm using other other loads on the house paint they will automatically disconnect if the voltage drops below a certain threshold Center cockpit underneath the bench seating you've got four hatches three of them open it just into their own enclosed storage space where I keep things like life jackets some cleaning products you can still lines fenders there and the last of the core hatches actually opens up all the way into the engine the Machinery compartment I'm probably planning on using that for storage of scuba cylinders it's uh it's going to be a nice place to construct a little cage and I can just drop the cylinders right through the hatch and they'll be secured now living within the Machinery compartment there's also a wash down hose bib starboard and there's a pretty unique looking fitting that I can attach to a garden hose and then I'd give it a quarter turn plug into the wash down and automatically it will allow water to start flowing so I can then uh in effect have a garden hose with fresh potable water to rinse down or whatever I need to do the transim has a uh hot and cold water tap with a shower head and like the flexible hose attached to it so what I love to do after I'm done swimming is sit in the transom switch on the hot and cold water and now I've got an outdoor shower and it's a beautiful way to finish up a nice swimming exercise foreign
