by writing to scripture and tradition at ewtn.com or you can follow us and participate with the show on facebook and youtube today we are going to continue our discussion on the importance of thoughtful reflection and its impact on making good decisions last week we celebrated the feast of saint thomas aquinas whose mind was brilliant and today we'll be talking up a little bit about him and of course we're wrapping up this series on listening to god you can still get the book that we've been using as a guide which is entitled how to listen when god is speaking a guide for modern day catholics it's available at ewtnrc.com where it is item number 1833 and next week we'll be starting a new bible study topic focusing on actually praying the gospels our goal with the new book will be to spend more time on specific events in the life of christ to help us get to know him better and to improve our personal relationship with him to let that relationship develop and grow more deeply now we'll be using as a guide in another book i wrote called praying the gospels jesus launches his public ministry you can get that at ewtnrc.com it is item number 52687 it's not as long as the book that we've been going through um but it does go through various events in the beginning of christ's public ministry and we'll take a look at each one of those all right so to finish up this other book we've been talking about the importance of using our mind our intellect this is a very distinctive gift given to human beings that in in a way that is not present among the animals they can learn some things most of what they have is by instinct but we can learn far more than any animal can and one of the greatest theologians probably the greatest theologian in the history of the church is saint thomas aquinas who lived in the 1200s a.d he was brilliant he stated the propositions of our faith he was just absolutely committed to our catholic faith but he also wanted to apply reason and thought to that faith he would also take a look at all of the objections to catholic teaching he would find as many as he could and not straw arguments that were easy to knock down he took the actual arguments he heard from philosophers of his day and earlier and then he would answer each objection in sequence he was able to understand so much of the profound mystery that is christ and take a look at how frequently in the gospels and the epistles that we refer to aspects of the faith as mystery that's very biblical teaching and to this day 800 years plus later about 850 years since he died almost we continued to study it and we had a guest a couple months ago that i would recommend taking a look at to understand more of the importance of saint thomas and our spirituality and it was by father romanus cesario op a great dominican and he wrote a book called sanctifying truth thomas aquinas on christian holiness see this is exactly the topic but he father romanus cesario goes into this so much more deeply with thomas's writing you can get that at ewtnrc.com it's item number 9836 and i highly recommend that um we can imitate we learn from saint thomas but we also can imitate him in our own prayer we can take a look at sacred scripture and start to deduce from it the various meanings and levels of depth that are present through our own thoughtful reflection on passages we can take a look at a number of important questions we can ask for instance what does this passage mean many of you send me your questions asking exactly that and that's extremely important that's why i'm glad to do this we also should ask how would the ancient people have understood it that means sometimes you have to get some background in the ancient world and that's where commentaries can be helpful to you also you then can move from how the ancient people understood it and say wait a minute there are some ways in which modern people are still like the ancients you know we commit a lot of the same sins we make some of the same assumptions about life about family and other things and just because they lived a long time ago that is no reason to dismiss them a person who dismisses the insights of the ancient world is bound to make a lot of very very uninformed if not to say outright foolish mistakes you learn from the past but you have to relate it to our day and understand their culture and and how it is there's a bridge to our own circumstances and then finally we can ask very importantly how does the passage relate to my life are there ways in which i can see this going on with me this is something of a dialogue with sacred scripture with the word of god and we can draw this meaning out of the word of god and find purpose in life and you know this is what we can then bring to our prayer this what i've been describing that kind of reflection is not the same as prayer it is reflection and thinking and deducing conclusions is an important task and we can bring what we learn to our time in meditation and prayer but the difference is this while i can make my reflections i need to ask the lord how do you want to apply this to me asking our lord to enter into the relationship and the dialogue is how we can learn much more than just our own reflections as we do so prayerfully and under the guidance and influence of the holy spirit the lord can deepen our love for him this is extremely important so we use these ideas as helps but then we have to bring them to christ and ask him how do you want this to apply to my life now there are some things that we have to be cautious about in the way we think about scripture there's a good deal of knowledge that we might have a lot of people have certain amounts of knowledge and i've known some very very superb scholars who really knew a lot and scripture scholars who knew tremendous amounts about the text of the bible but there's always the risk of getting so captivated by your own knowledge and focused on what you know that you don't move next toward love of god it's easy to allow our knowledge to become a source of pride and in that pride to think about how great i am instead of like the great hymn to sing out how great thou art to god and what must be there and make the knowledge worthwhile is to have a flame of love for christ having that love and devotion to him is what makes whatever knowledge we have worthwhile i've known a number of people who are mentally disabled as far as the world goes but they love jesus so much and their love will far surpass the knowledge of great scholars especially if those scholars do don't share in that love now if you have the knowledge and the love christ can inflame that devotion and your knowledge into something extremely useful even the great saint thomas aquinas himself toward the end of his life said everything i've written is straw now you say st thomas this is absolutely brilliant we're all continuing to learn from it but as he came to know and love god more deeply he saw that his ideas were just straw compared to the fire of god's love and this is something that all of us want to come to us whatever knowledge we are capable of acquiring we want to come to that love of god that's something that gives us the enthusiasm to evangelize it gives us the drive to help those who are in need because the love of christ also spills out into love of neighbor and this is an extremely important uh issue so this is a key aspect and in fact you know when you think about saint thomas his love and devotion did really permeate his life and in many ways it came out the devotion came out and was expressed in his many hymns he wrote in very beautiful latin a number of hymns that we still sing for instance many of us know how in lent which is coming up fairly soon in a few weeks the panjay lingua a uh great hymn especially for the eucharistic procession on holy thursday this great hymn was written by him and most of us know that part of the hymn known as the tantum ergo that's it was part of the same poem and we sing that at benediction under almost always and so these are wonderful wonderful uh hymns and the you know this was something that came from that prayer and devotion and this is something that we can learn from his spiritual life we still use it for our hymnology because the the hymns help to elevate our hearts in devotion and so that's why he wrote that it came from his devotion and there to help us with ours and this is where each one of us can again use our intellect and get rid of false ideas you know if somebody willfully holds on to false things about god that can be sinful a lot of us make mistakes but if we find out that it's an error and we still hold on to it then we commit sin and this is not a good thing so we have to use our minds to help eliminate error to the best of our ability and we want to know the truth about god because christ personifies truth we need to be committed to truth we're not politicians we're not the hollywood people who get paid to mouth the words that other people tell them no matter what the character might be we are not some of the people in the media who will say the politically correct thing whether it's true or not no we are committed to the truth about god whether it's politically correct or incorrect because the politics will change i guarantee you that they'll change to whatever is convenient and advantageous to the politician but what we do have a sense of is that we want the truth about god and then with that knowledge of the truth of god i come to him and stand before him as this creature and in praise and adoration i also meditate on those truths and in relationship with christ come to have a deeper sense of him setting me on fire to serve him to love his father and to receive the holy spirit who empowers me to love christ and through christ the father this is our task now something else that's very important we should keep in mind intellect is a specifically human gift and then as you know your option that's what knowing things remembering things and reasoning using your mind to apply reason these are distinctive to human beings and we need to use that most distinctive gift for god and then realize that because we have that knowledge we can have free will we can make choices and that is the second distinctive gift of being human to have free will you know your choices you know what they are rationally intellectually you know that and then you can make the choice that's going to please god in a way that the animals can't they'll follow their instincts and god cherishes their instincts he creates them with it but we make choices then there's one other area namely emotion we share emotion with the animals they can be very emotional affectionate angry sad so on and what we'll do is take a little break and come back and talk about how that gift we share with the other animals especially the mammals and how that gift can help us in our prayer and we'll go on about that in a bit so please stay with us [Music] [Music] many of father mitch pacquiao's books are available through the ewtn religious catalog to get 1-800-854-6316 [Music] we today aren't that much different than the pagans in a lot of ways so easy i think to create god in our image what we wish he was what's going to make us happy and then we project that onto god [Music] metanoia really means to have a mind changed by what's happening it's a changed life because god has encountered you through jesus his son every catholic christian at one time or another has to come to that point of we recognize who jesus is not who we want him to be not who we think he should be so that when we're asked the question who do you say that i am we're able to answer [Music] hey alexa how many ways can i get ewtn you can get ewtn on television via cable and satellite on apple tv roku amazon fire and google play you can get ewtn radio in your car on siriusxm channel 130 and on the go on any mobile device with the ewtn app and here's the best news now you can get ewtn's crate programming on me [Music] [Music] all right we were talking about the importance of using our mind which lets us know the array of options that we have and that makes free will possible but then we also have feelings and we share emotions with the animals now these emotions are good there's nothing wrong with emotion but you have to keep them in a certain kind of perspective first emotions come and go my cat especially the female is just purring just so happy when i give her some milk give them lactose free because cats are lactose intolerant so don't give them lactose but she loves to have a little bit of milk and i'll give them a little bit of that in the morning so she'll be right up you know you know purring and all that until i try to put the flea and tick medicine on her then she immediately switches and gets very angry that's an example of what we do our emotions change fairly easily and that can happen in the home and that's that's again part of us sharing emotion with our animals on our animal uh pets but the other animals too they're all very emotional and this is a part of what we have to keep in mind feelings are not a good basis you can't trust them to make basic decisions because they do change so easily you can have good feelings that's a great thing enjoy them but sometimes you have negative feelings and so you have to say okay i'll cope with that too that's part of life and then move back towards clear thinking to give guidance to feelings otherwise feelings without guidance from our minds become you know terror ask anybody who raises a two or three year old they'll tell you about that so it's balance of our feelings and our intellect and our will that is our our free will refers to our ability to make a decision and one of the things about using the mind to help you make good decisions is that then you can find a decision in your will to stick with the good decisions if you make a decision to marry somebody then even if somebody who looks like they could be a better mate might be richer might be prettier might be smarter all kinds of things they'll come up they'll come into your life in various ways and you say nope even though they look more attractive my commitment the act of my will is to love this person love's not a feeling their feelings with it but the love that you have for your husband or your wife is a love that is a decision to choose that person and you stick to it and this is something that we all have to keep very much in mind um we can reflect on those uh various uh decisions we should and bring them to our prayer asking what is going to work for us will it be for our ultimate purpose by work for us i mean what's going to be for ultimate purpose which is going to heaven and avoiding hell that's the most important decision you have to make and how will something help why is it going to work understand why this is a good idea for me uh am i able to do the things necessary in living out this decision will i be able to take my role of cooperating with a spouse and raising a family for instance we have to do this whenever we choose any kind of decision buying a car buying a house picking something for lunch and all that stuff all different levels we have to think about it and see what's going to be best for us marshmallows and chocolate syrup are not a good decision for your lunch main course not even so sure is that good for dessert so we have to you know do what we can and keep in mind that if we don't use our intellect our minds to guide our decisions and if we don't use our will to stay firm in our decisions and if we allow our feelings to be the be-all end-all you end up like the kids i grew up with in the 1960s who just wanted to be free and just want to express and they ended up all looking alike wearing blue jeans and tie-dyed shirts which come in and out of popularity still but you end up by trying to be a free spirit you end up looking like everybody else you know now everybody wants to be unique forgetting that they are unique before god but i want to be i want to show being unique i want to be different from everybody else so i'll wear a tattoo everybody has tattoos and they look kind of alike um i'm not impressed this is something that you know you make these choices and let the reality of life hammer those choices into shape the way the old time blacksmith would take his hammer on the hot heated metal and use that to flatten it and sharpen it to make it into a sword or whatever else he was making and life is like that it pounds away at us but it also pounds away in order to give us distinctive shape and even after it gets shaped to sharpen it and make us a fine point for the service of god so that as it says about the word of god it's like a two-edged sword that cuts between the spirit and the soul this is something that happens in life if we commit ourselves and use our free will to make a decision to stay faithful in all things any one of us can and i think every one of us should look to the sacred scriptures and to the teaching of the church to help form and forge the way we look at god it's something that will make us what we are before god and i've used another image i use forging iron as one image another image i use is from the bible is that of clay in this life we're like a piece of wet clay we can be fashioned and formed we can try to form ourselves or we can let other people fashion us for their own purposes which usually are not going to be good for us we can let the devil form us into something hideous and evil or we can let god form us and fashion us our relationship in prayer is where we are giving ourselves over saying lord i want you to fashion me i want to be conformed to your will and conformed to your holy word help me to meta fill me with your holy spirit to contemplate your word to be filled with love of you and allow you and trust you to to go ahead and fashion me so that i guarantee you by the end of life if the lord fashions us he will fashion us in his own image in likeness if the world fashions us it'll be so they can use us if the devil fashions us it'll be to make us something ugly that is against god and if we fashion ourselves we'll make a mess but if god fashions us we will be the most beautiful we could possibly ever be and so use your mind to form your will and let your emotions motivate you and drive you to follow the will and fill you with love of god with emotional quality to it to help motivate you to love god but also sometimes you'll use your anger um many a time anger motivates us to stand against evil to stand against temptation and there are all the other emotions that can be used as motivations but ultimately will be there to serve god okay all right again what i want to do next week is take this teaching that we have been getting uh you know i've been going through this book on how to pray and how to listen i want to start applying it to specific passages in the gospels to help us do that and growing us so god willing that's what we'll do next week i'll take a look at some of your questions we have first of all question from someone who's watching the show on youtube okay father mitch how do we discern whether the holy spirit is calling us to eastern orthodoxy or roman catholicism historians disagree and church fathers interpret rock and keys variously all right well a couple of things you know um this is going to be something you pay close attention to what notice how the lord is drawing you towards the historical churches the churches that can trace themselves back to the apostles that applies to the eastern orthodox all the the orthodox churches can trace themselves back to the apostles and to jesus christ so does the catholic church and i'm going to strongly recommend that you take a look at a book by uh i i the title of it slips my mind but the author i know it's james likudis l-i-k-o-u-d-a-s james likudis he wrote a number of good books trying with great respect he had been raised in the greek orthodox church became a catholic but what i l one of the things i love his about his books is that likudus never ever you know compromised on his intense respect for orthodoxy and the issues at stake as being important but he was able to explain these issues to in such a way that he showed why there's a even greater fullness on in catholicism now when it comes to the questions of the authority because that's one of the big issues a few other issues but one of the big issues is the authority of the keys and it's you have to keep in mind that our lord gave the authority to bind and lose first to peter by himself and then that was in matthew 16 and then to all the apostles in chapter 18 and it's maintaining that balance between peter's soul gift his unique gift of binding and loosing and then the the role of the other uh descendants of the apostles not their physical descendants their spiritual ones that the apostolic tradition continues and this is um a very very important kind of thing that you have this gift that both gifts i think that in the east and the west there were different developments of the roles of the bishops in the east the bishops often had closer relations with their kings and emperors while the um in the roman rite church they had more of a standoffish relationship especially after the collapse of the western empire and that was a blessing for us i think but the ways that some of the some of the popes have exercised it can be adapted for different circumstances there's and that's what pope saint john paul had said and he talked about getting some of that adaptation and there's room without denying the unique role of peter that also helps to maintain the role of the other patriarchs um another thing that you may want to do is take a look at you know because a lot of the attraction to the eastern church is an attraction to its liturgy and we also have in the catholic church 22 rights that have that liturgy as well as union with the pope and maybe to talk to some of the eastern right bishops about their relations with the the papacy and the role of the papacy and the role of their own patriarchs i don't know where you live but you might want to check with say the maronite bishops or the ukrainian greek catholics or the ruthenian greek catholics and other communions these are other churches within catholicism talk to them about that relationship as well but take a look at likudis okay be my strong and think that through it's not a feeling be a careful thought we have a question from susanna said father dear father could you explain what luke 17 32-37 means it sounds like the rapture which catholics don't believe in respectfully susanna all right let's take a look um it it says that i tell you that this is in luke 17 verse 34. i tell you in that night there will be two in one bed one will be taken the other left there'll be two women grinding together one will be taken the other left and they said we're lord he said to them where the body is there the eagles will be gathered together and this is in reference to the end times but the reason that you bring up issues of the rapture is that in the middle of the 1800s that passage was interpreted by people who invented the doctrine of the rapture the rapture was never believed in before the 1800s that was a new doctrine that was come up and various churches started on that the word rapture doesn't appear in the bible it's not there and it's uh the the idea of someone being taken someone left behind is the basis of that series the left behind series but that use of it comes only from the way it was interpreted within the this new doctrine of the rapture it's always been understood in terms of those people who are going to be saved and those who are not some people are going to be saved by christ it doesn't say that they're going to be lifted up in rapture that's not here it doesn't say it just says you know that one will be taken and the other left taken to heaven but not raptured that's just that's reading into it there'll be the salvation of those uh and you won't tell just by people being in the same place together some will be saved some will not and that kind of decision um especially today where people think that it's ali ali oxen free free free that everybody will go to heaven that's that's not true either but the rapture is not a biblical doctrine so don't look at it through that lens but just look to it at the lens that there'll be a judgment and some people will be taken to heaven others left behind for hell so that's all all right take a little break we'll come back with more of your questions please stay with us [Music] [Music] looking to advance your spiritual life spiritual excellence so that's going to be a good thing uh he's a great guy great guy got a chance to meet him and he's be a lot of fun all right let's now take a look at another caller uh deborah hi father mitch hi thanks for taking my call sure where you calling from i'm going from state college pennsylvania which is where penn state is okay great and what can we do for you this fine day well you've mentioned prayer and meditation a number of times today could you please explain what meditation is for a catholic because i don't know what it is but i'd like to be able to do it sure sure you know the term meditation is used quite a bit today in a wide variety of ways many of which are you know tend toward the new age interpretation where you get into a peaceful state and and you get into a state of consciousness and christian meditation is not primarily about a state of mind or some spiritual state that's oftentimes the case again in the way new age people interpret especially uh east asian spiritual life in christianity uh we keep in mind the primary goal which is interpersonal union with jesus christ that's the goal of our meditation knowing christ and being known by him that's what we want to see happen so christian meditation will be um and first of all it will go through different stages of development there are different levels of meditation on different topics but what we want to do is come to understand uh who christ is and we can do it by meditating on the gospels using our imagination using our imagination to picture scenes from the gospels that's what i'm going to be describing over the next few months as we go through the gospels and various passages about christ and try to put ourselves into the scene that's one way to meditate uh it's very much the way saint ignatius of loyola recommended there are other forms of meditation where you have um you know a certain passage that is not easy to picture say something from saint paul and you repeat it and allow the power of that word to come more into your own mind and spirit and allows saint paul's teaching to you know to to affect you think thinking about what it means but then also as the holy spirit stirs inside of you letting him take you into this deeper understanding of saint paul's teaching you may want to take a look at some of the work by saint teresa of avila of avila saint john of the cross also but he's kind of difficult for at the outset saint teresa of avila is a lot more clear she she is more clear teaching you might want to also take a look at the way that the carmelites pray and there'll be some other types catholicism allows for a variety of types of meditation but the focus is not on our own state of consciousness the focus is on the person jesus christ and union with him and that this spending time and our imagination and our minds to focus on him would be different forms of meditation okay then we also have a question from marie in loveland colorado dear father mitch why was the fall of adam and eve unforgivable by god i do not understand why if they had shame and sorrow for their sin as it seems that they did god could not give them his mercy was this an example of the first sin against the holy spirit that we were taught as the only unforgivable sin marie in loveland colorado no marie this is not a sin against the holy spirit and it is not unforgivable i want you to pay close attention to the way that satan was cursed when god cursed the serpent to crawl on his belly and things like that that was fine but the important part of the curse is that the lord says i will put enmity between you and the woman between your seed and her seed you will strike at his heel but he will strike at your head this is seen as a promise of salvation that they're given that promise but at that moment they were not yet ready for reconciliation it took that the reconciliation was not something god just was gonna say okay it's forget about it it's all right no it's not like that there's there was damage done to nature we were made in god's image and likeness and sin disordered us so we need to have true reconciliation with god and after many many millennia of preparation from adam until christ you see that a history of salvation beginning with abraham and moving to jesus christ leads to him empowering reconciliation because god becomes man so that as a man he can die for sins while being sinless himself and because he is god made man he is able to give an infinite reconciliation it took that reality of god made man who is able to have us you know reconciled and that's very important because notice how in the gospels jesus addresses at his mother as woman and if you notice you've got to read carefully but look at genesis chapter 2 and 3 that before the sin adam's wife is just known as the woman she's not given the name eve until after the sin before the sin she is just the woman and our lord addresses his mother as the woman and that her role is to be the woman whose seed namely jesus christ without help from seed from a man her seed will crush the head of satan but it took that history of salvation and the act of the redemption by jesus christ to make it possible okay and then we see here um uh oh from tom father mitch i've always been troubled by mary's request at fatima to build a uh cathedral here in my honor it just doesn't jive with her humility i've always wondered these miranda apparitions could be as paul describes even satan can disguise himself as an angel light and when people worship mary instead of christ that is a problem i've gotten over this for the most when i try to honor mary but there's some books out there that say salvation is not possible except through mary what are your thoughts on this tom tom a couple of things um it's it's not possible without mary it relates to my last statement it is that satan was cursed by the promise that the seed of the woman would crush the head of his seed and that this is something that is possible because of the woman now it is christ who redeems us mary does not redeem us but he took flesh and was able to be our redeemer because he took flesh in her womb that's how we understand it so that the church is very clear take a look at vatican 2 in the chat the chapter 8 of lumenjincium that mary shares in the mediation of christ she's called comediatrix and co-redemptrix in this sense she does not add anything to jesus nor does she take away anything from him but her willing cooperation with god's plan to bear god the son in her womb so he could become flesh in her that is where she is necessary she doesn't add to christ she doesn't diminish from christ but she was the necessary part of what christ did and in terms of having the place to honor her is to remember her mission and it's not out of ego but it helps us to rem to it helps to remind us of her role all right i remind that we're out of time so may the lord bless you and keep you and cause his face to shine upon you and lead you in all of your ways by his peace may god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit and again we ask that you keep us in between your gospel electric building cable bill so that we can take care of all of our bills too mother was inspired to have the network supported that way so thank you for your support and god bless
