was born in the 1800s and was the first african-american musician to achieve widespread attention as a guitarist as well as a composer and teacher as well as an arranger i hope you enjoy this piece [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] hi my name is jack dickson and i'm excited to be opening for scott tennant tonight i will be playing jericho which is the third movement of tom clippens a soldier's sonata [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] thank you so much it's uh it's a thrill to be here um we're doing everything virtual these days but um omni has found a way to keep it going and i believe this is their 40th year they're celebrating so it's very it's a great great privilege to be asked to to be here with you all in your homes listening tonight so i'm going to continue the program with two pieces by alfonso montes alfonso is a composer and guitarist from venezuela and he's been living though in germany for the past several decades with his wife irina kircher who uh the two of them make up the uh the montesquircher duo and alfonso has written quite a lot of pieces for the guitar and for his own duo of course too but the two pieces i'm going to play are preludio de adios and floriando the preludio de adios was written when he was thinking back to the time he had to leave venezuela his family had already been sent to germany and his wife is from germany so his family was there and he this is this is recalling the time he had to leave looking back at his home and his things and wondering if he would ever come back uh because of the political unrest there at the time so uh pluto libya de adios is basically kind of a nostalgic piece with him wondering if he's gonna ever come back floriando is a beautiful piece it's a he wrote it as a tremolo etude uh for me and floriando itself means flowering or blossoming so what you hear in this piece is not necessarily any melody but it's just these harmonies that that gradually morph over the course of the piece kind of you know these waves of harmony uh kind of caressing you so uh lovely piece two lovely pieces actually by by alfonso montes [Music] so [Music] um [Music] do [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] so next i'd like to share with you a set of uh baroque pieces from the french era of baroque music and these are quite special because well first of all the french baroque style is really one of my favorite baroque styles i can't explain it i just like the rich quality and all the ornate embellishments that are involved a lot of it's a little bit more difficult on the guitar than it would be to say on the harpsichord but um what what this set primarily is is a set of basically fiorbo pieces the orbo was a very long instrument it looked a little bit like a loot but with a very long neck and this was a very popular uh popular instrument of the day robert de visay who was the preeminent uh guitarist uh of the day and uh the orbit the orbist the orbist i think it's the orvis europa west anyway um he transcribed a lot of popular pieces in the day for the instrument uh pieces by other composers very famous like ramo luli coupon etc so uh the piece ends with a few of those i'm going to begin though with uh le berry cod mysterious the mysterious barricades by francois cupera a very beautiful piece originally for harpsichord the barricades part of the title is very mysterious indeed and maybe that's part of the mysterious nature of the title itself but my understanding of it as i played this for a while is that the barricades refer to the tied notes there's a tied note over every measure over every bar and we do our best on the guitar to respect as many of those as we can but mysterious barricades next is la fanferinet by jean-philippe ramo gorgeous a little piece that i heard a long time ago by the jazz keyboard is bob james and um i heard him play it on a synth clip here i think it was and i found the music and transcribed it and like to play it for you tonight then after that i'm going to be tuning down as we go i'm going to end up in a very uh odd tuning and so we're going to next do the piece the overture de la grotte de versailles originally by luly again this is transcribed by robert davise and arranged by alex dunn so it's uh alex dunn took the the orbo versions and put them to the guitar in a masterful way and then after that we'll have a piece by robert davies himself simply called la moussette and rondo meaning that the theme comes back and then you have a couplet and then theme returns etc it's like a layer cake um we'll finish with um lesson then by francois coupon and again it's in rondo four [Music] so [Music] do [Music] [Music] so [Music] hmm [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so to finish the saving i'd like to kind of go back to my roots being uh scottish my father was very proud of his scottish roots and uh i've always enjoyed playing the music i grew up listening to it i was probably the only kid in in south detroit who had bagpipes playing recording recordings of bagpipes playing in his in his home so anyway um i'm going to start with a beautiful arrangement of a welsh song my gentle heart and the arrangement is by gerald garcia very good friend of mine he's a brilliant composer and a ranger and guitarist and teacher and everything and this is one of his little gems my gentle harp and then i'm going to go right into a piece that my father used to sing i play this i played this piece in almost every concert that i do every chance i get to share it but this piece is kind of for me it just kind of my father passed away before he got to really hear me go out into the world and play concerts so i know he really wanted to to to hear me uh and watch my career take off but this is my way of kind of bringing him back and remembering my father who used to sing this piece a wild mountain time to my brother and i when we were growing up so [Music] so [Music] [Music] um [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you
