[Music] what makes our house a home we've asked the people of Scotland to enter their houses into Scotland's home of the year now our judges are visiting the top three from each region choosing one each week to go through to our national final scoring them on architectural Merit distinctive design and original style are interior designer Anna Campbell Jones what I'm looking for in a home is bags of Personality care for the planet and that most important ingredient love architect and lecturer Michael Angus what I'm looking for in a home is the right building in the right place compassionately decorated to enhance the lives within and guest judge winner of BBC's and design Masters banjo Beale I'm looking for a home that is packed full of character and just really well lived in this is dreamy isn't it I feel like the queen look I've already found the heart in the end only one can be Scotland's home of the year today our judges are visiting the shortlist from Central and they're starting with a new build in Bridge of Allen the skinny house is home to Austin and Haley when this plot came up it was such a unique opportunity and it was a bit of waist around the plot's only four and a half meters wide so we had so many restrictions and architect was actually my dad and he helped to design the house around what we wanted every little nook and cranny every space is just filled with exactly what we need there's not a theme throughout the house it is just a combination of things that represent us a lot of times people say oh it's so narrow it's not big enough like how can the two years live in it but people get surprised as soon as they come into the house exactly how big it is on the ground level there's a living room kitchen Diner and bathroom built around to external Courtyards upstairs are two ensuite bedrooms with an office space on the landing this is the day a day our favorite sport in the home and we love to just sit here and appreciate the courtyard and look back on to the rest of the house and see what we've created armed with only the basic facts about the property the judges now get their first look at the skinny house the skinny house oh it's written on the ground this is a nice drive I love when people have the grass in between the pavers I think that's really Chic I think it's always quite revealing when you see buildings using New Stone because you get an idea of what Victorian buildings or all buildings would have looked like they would have looked that fresh and you actually get to see that Counterpoint between the new stone and the Old Stone because of these two beautiful walls that looked like they were either side of a of a driveway perhaps really kind of funneling you towards that front door which itself has got this kind of cheeks on either side kind of like you yeah excellent jawline yes beautiful beautiful lip at the front and quite narrow yeah everything I'm not I think you should go first then [Music] straight in it's a different house isn't it to what was outside but I love it I love the colors I love this warm kind of Timber I love the floor I love that hide I think they've done some interesting little things in here check out that old washing machine that's been upcycled to a side table quite surprised given the narrow plot that they've taken a bite out of the middle to create a little Courtyard it's really beautiful I'm loving this as a big thing in Japanese architecture because the plots are so small and they often do that thing of like pulling light down and carving little holes into the middle not traditional in Scotland but why not foreign [Laughter] worktop with the kind of white veins running through it I think people often make quite safe choices with worktops because they think they're going to last a really long time but this is just going to keep providing Joy I'm going to get a wee bit picky about the Lee out here I mean I think when you've got such constraints in the space is it the right proportion I'm sort of feeling as if I want to shrink this or move this or something you know what they've just thrown out the rule book I think they've done what they want and they've just gone for it and it's probably not a family house but I think this house can kind of grow with whoever lives here because you know that bank hat is not built in and I can see uh the heart so actually although you feel the dining space is compromised Michael this is their favorite spot you know it changes as soon as you come around this and it does actually take on a completely different impression doesn't it it's a skinny half but lots of fat ornaments like a little Pat who's a good boy I just love this bit we're sure customers got into Windows just being straight out usually but it's so lovely to see a space being colonized from existing Stone but having this just this aspect straight up the way it's really gorgeous and I love the way that this wall can be opened up and even on a kind of typical Scottish summer day when it's raining you're protected because of the high wall that's quite close by oh you're getting an amazing view from up here look at that oh I love this this is nice no nerdy runs to the bathroom though isn't that just the most perfectly placed window to take advantage of that incredible Greenery look at that and from here you can see into every single other room in the home it's incredible and so generous to give such a large space over to circulation it means they can also use it as a home office there's a lovely little place to sit and work foreign [Music] it does tone with the palette of the rest of the house but it's a much Bolder color Choice it's speaking the same language isn't it it's just a nice pop of color I think you needed that and this is another space in this home to get all these kind of interesting views and from here I can see all the way down that this throw is really complementing the orange Eames chair that's right by the front door nice sweet place to hide give that man a pay rise look at that TV you can only watch that that's all right I can watch TV now I'm into it this is like a hotel room isn't it it's like a hotel very very kind of perfect and soft and plush we've got the obligatory Shades long we've got the pendant lights either side of the bed ensuite that I saw my way past wardrobe compressed plan but a very efficient one I feel warm and there's a nice little Vista out there well that I think is lovely because I always think it's quite satisfying that you get to the end of the building like that window we saw from the start and you get there at the end the sort of conclusion to the whole building the judges mark will be held back by all three homes when their combined scores will be revealed I think this form is a success story somebody has found it what is essentially a utilitarian space and perhaps redundant for anything that may consider to be valuable and turn it into something of a measurable value a home to live in the picky architect in me is maybe going to question the allocation of some of those spaces but the principle of it I think is absolutely wonderful I'm going to give this home a nine [Music] definitely get the sense that this home has been Tailor-Made in every way everything is perfectly chosen to fit in this very particular home I think the central Courtyard on the ground floor works really well to bring light into that lower level I think it would still do the same job if it was a little bit smaller and that would give more space to the kitchen I'm going to give this home a nine from the outside I immediately love this home architecturally I think it's superb when it comes to the decoration I might have made some different choices but the house as the feeling there's something really quite magical about it I think I really liked the outdoor spaces that were integrated into the home for me that's how I want to live that feels very Australian [Music] next up in central is a b listed former ministers house in orcharder dating from the mid 19th century the old Mance is home to Kelly Michelle and their three children so two years ago we first viewed the house and I instantly fell in love with it my husband was looking for more a modern home and one that didn't need renovating but there was no negotiations we got a great architect that helped us keep all the original features while still being able to open up this nice family area that we were really craving here my husband is not into the Interiors he really loves my style and my taste I kind of know what he likes as well so I created The Snug room really for him so that he can just relax in the evening close the door watch a movie you'll notice there's lots of like creatures and animals and lots of the prints and I'm very much drawn to William Morris apparently you can get matching pajamas for my for my wallpaper in the bedroom so never know the grind floor features an open plan kitchen and dining room a formal sitting room and snug upstairs the property has five bedrooms with one used as a study and three bathrooms two ensuite so this is our favorite spot in the home we get to enjoy the garden View it's a very social spot because I can also cook and talk to people so it's a really nice place it's now time for the judges to assess the old man's this is a wonderfully fine building isn't it really kind of an italian-esque kind of quality isn't it and why bother having Windows when you can have a recess which I think would have had what is a home without statuary it's really unusual and impressive the chimney directly over and I can't even call that a front door a portico it's more than a porch more than a door almost symmetrical dreams are coming true this is perfect everything's lined up but I'm really excited to get inside and see what it's hiding shall we lead the way this is very elegant isn't it look at that beautiful I'm ready to move in I love what they've done bringing the color onto the ceiling and you kind of really zoning in on that gorgeous plaster work I love the way the doors are picked out and this kind of Inky gray that quite a contemporary color but used on this kind of woodwork it's respectful of the building but it's still you still know what year we're in now foreign I mean I'm almost a fan for knocking through and this is a great example take that little bit of wall out and suddenly you get a completely different proportion of room a modern proportion if you like and the main thing of course is you suddenly get two wonderful Windows just opening straight out to that wonderful garden I think it's really clever this mural of the countryside and trees so that you kind of wrapping all the way around and then you've got more of it out there this is all about the natural textures for me the peacock chairs the beautiful Scandinavian chairs the jute rug the one thing that's confusing me is that chandelier but if you can have a bit of a blingy moment in an otherwise natural calm space I mean I think you need to let them off the hook I'm gonna phone to Heart guys I hate that she is if I had a window seat it would always be where I would put the heart particularly in buildings like this when you have these thick walls it's so easy to do and it's just such a lovely place to sit this country kitchen goals isn't it we've got double Belfast sink we've got a beautiful range cooker and a probably a bespoke smoky Bluey gray they have committed to the color scheme in this house I am thinking though is there not much storage but I'm clutching at straws I don't care about storage you just declutter [Music] that's a party space this is my dream oh I have just always wanted a cinema room I think this is the perfect arrangement for this L-shaped basically a fire to the left and All Eyes concentrated on the main event well this is a really fun informal room isn't it you've got a gigantic TV disco ball fun pictures on the wall a gin bar it's definitely a place to just kick back and relax you don't know this about me but my favorite hobby is laying down so this room is working for me I mean that TV is that the perfect height the color's right I mean pass me a drink Anna this is I'm settling in for the night what a beautiful sinuous handrail curvy no thank you another thing I always love is in rooms like this that the window is virtually going from the head to the floor and that lovely and then the chair sitting in front of that that is Picture Perfect Isn't it I love the fact the bedroom has a balcony which is perfectly oriented towards that pergola that goes down the garden surrounded with pink roses that just happen to be the exact same color as the throw on the bed and I think the bed is literally hugging you the way it comes around like that if your husband isn't spinning you your bed is how will the judges reach the old mounts Michael is holding back his squirt what I love about this home is the way that you can see the homeowners have been breathing new life back into it but at the same time imprinting it with their personality the architecture and the period features of this home are really brought into focus with the very careful choice of colors I think this home will continue to evolve as long as these people are living here I'm going to give this home a 10. I love this home the minute I walk up to the front door it's Grand but it's down to earth I love all of the natural materials I think for me the kitchen Diner is the most successful part of the house this really feels like a healthy happy home I think a lot of care and love has gone into every little detail and it shows if I could change one thing it would be replacing the owners with myself I'm giving this house a 10. it's interesting that a building of this age would have had rituals and ways of living that no longer apply and what's lovely about what the homeowners have done here is they've retained that respect to the way that the building would have been used but they've modernized it in a way that is comfortable and suitable to them the decor for me is not my Decor I think I would have thrown a bit more color a bit more vibrancy perhaps but yes I would definitely have not a few more holes in the walls the building can take it oh the final home in central is a traditional Cottage in Dumb Blaine dating from 1784 Daisy Cottage is home to Laura David and their three cats Bibi Belle and patchy the property has been in the family for a very long time we moved in here just temporarily and I don't know how it happened but within a couple of weeks we just fell in love with it so we decided we just thought right let's bite the building we'll extend it yeah my parents lived here I mean my dad was disabled and we designed it Having learned so much about coping with a disability with my parents when we redid the house we made sure there was no trip hazards there's no steps anywhere the whole of the lower part of the garden is is accessible to anyone in a wheelchair the ensuite bathrooms are a weight room that was the the thinking that paint hence the studio really is a studio and it will never be tidy we'll always be Splats on the floor and miss that's why I've got the little Louvre gallery and that's where I hang work most people don't use the Lewis and art gallery and I do my mum and dad would be so proud because I think we've done a really good job of upgrading and bringing an old and really tired house back to life give it another couple of hundred years of Hope all on one level the cottage includes our living room two bedrooms both with ensuite a library come study and Laura's Art Studio the modern extension houses a large kitchen Diner a small bathroom the Louvre and a utility room that looks out over the terraced Back Garden this is her favorite photo it's free everybody socializes and it's just such a great space for entertaining family and friends so what will the judges make of Daisy Cottage well that's the quintessential cute Cottage isn't it adorable isn't it I'm just missing a cute little duck running across the garden it's got everything it's got roses it's got Fox gloves lavender yeah I don't mean you're getting all excited about the plants but I think it's the slates I'm getting really excited about and look at that path and a typical typical sure [Music] so it's got the kind of atmosphere that you would expect coming into a cottage or the mixture of textures and patterns and plants it's very cozy oh apart from this stuff hair with antlers on the wall so maybe there's a little bit of something else going on in this home I was expecting something Twee in here but this place has an edge there's lots of quirky little sculptures all around I'm so glad it's not sweet I must admit I thought tweets your style did you think yeah I love seeing all the original features are still there but they've all been sort of slightly smoothed out but again you've still got the fire you've still got the great big thick walls you still get that sense of these buildings really enclosing you and wrapping you up I'm gonna assume that this is not the main living space I don't know I mean it is feels like a living room but I just get the feeling that there's something more expansive to come should we check it out foreign feeling here isn't it it's completely different proportions much bigger much airier I know but the lovely thing is they've kept the sort of the proportions of windows so that could have been a big sheet of glass so there's that link of the old and the new hey oh hot this is the favorite spot perched right up on the bar I think they like a drink or two I'm just clocking the wine this juice in there oh that's an old kind of yeah drying wrap I think they're bringing that Woodland fantasy in here and lots of Ivy bigger antlers and the whole Forest of plants there's a very different type of room through there I can see stacked up canvases there's an easel and paintings going all the way up to the ceiling they're clearly fans of Paris because we have the Louvre over there I wonder what that could be oh yeah it is what you thought yeah yeah Mona Lisa you wouldn't expect to see a bedroom that's like off the kitchen old Sweet Kitchen on-site kitchen very handy for your morning copper I'm noticing everything has a place and a purpose their storage is on point I think it's pretty good and that bed is made perfectly that's professional they've got the steamer out look at that it is very brought together isn't it this room you've got the colors in the embroidered cushions on the bed I've picked out in the matching pair of paintings on the wall kind of coalescing into a kind of scheme here albeit like 50 shades of beige but it works and it's something around the corner here as well goodness there's a whole other dressing room in here with quite a lot of hats it's a Mad Hatter [Music] oh so we had a bedroom ensuite to the kitchen and then we've got a library come office ensuite to the bedroom every house needs a library this is a lovely cozy quiet room like I can imagine coming in here in my jammies and just kind of curling up with a book I mean I noticed there were a lot of Landscapes throughout the home and suddenly we come into this much more intimate room and we've got all these beautiful portraits on the wall which I'm assuming is family every piece of furniture at this home seems to have been designed to fit exactly in the space or vice versa but they're never going to get out are they it's a home for life and why would you leave I've got everything you've got a bar you've got a library you roll out of bed to the fridge I mean is this the dream house how will the judges evaluate Daisy Cottage Anna is holding her screw back I think this feels like a really warm family home there's a lot of love in this house and from the outside it was a quirky little chocolate box but inside it got a little bit darker a little bit more mysterious and then it opened right up to that big light Filled Room what they've managed to do is kind of have a home that is just uniquely theirs and I like that I'm going to give this home an eight this home made me think a lot about equilibrium and balance it had that interesting thing about the old building being much more Compact and contained in the extension being much more generous so there was this lovely idea those two things were sitting in a nice Harmony together the thing that I was drawn to was those curious moments in the home those bits that were not quite of the norm and I was really wishing I suppose for more of that to be taken more into that otherworldliness that those things were hinting at I'm going to give this home an eight find really appealing about this home is the way that it brings together the interests of the people that live here from the outside is a very very traditional Cottage but then when you came inside there's this eclectic collection of artwork and textures and Furniture pieces and you definitely get a sense that the people that live here are less than conventional now that the judges have seen all three homes the final scores can be revealed first it was the skinny house and Bridge of Allen it was like this lovely elongated home it was very compact but it had these really long views it was incredibly interesting I've not seen something quite like it I thought it was adorable I gained it a nine Michael you also gave it a nine banjo what did you think well I I absolutely adored the inside outside living in this house and I think for a small house that packed a lot of punch so I'm giving the skinny house a big fat eight wow so the skinny house gets 26 next up the old mountain this beautiful tranquil Sandstone period home banjo you gave it a 10. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous I gave it a 10 as well how about you Michael well I mean I'm very lucky of course because I got a lovely building to start with the decor may not have been everything I would have done but I think the subtle things that they did in the home the subtle changes to the doors the way they emphasized the building back to the garden and open certain rooms up I thought the whole thing was just wonderful so I also gave it a 10. so that gives them answer 30. yeah it's pretty impressive this is going to be the score to beat and finally Daisy Cottage in dunblane this cute little picture-perfect place Michael you gave it an eight and banjo you also gave it a note I thought it was really really adorable and actually the outside was super traditional you didn't expect what you were getting inside all the kind of crazy artwork and the collective stuff um I also gave it an eight which is Daisy Cottage 24. so that means the finalists for the central region is the months oh that is a wonderful addition to the final isn't it I think that's a very worthy winner and I can't wait to see it in the final the old man's wins in Central and is one step closer to being Scotland's home of the year [Music] next week oh it's a bit swingy the judges are in the South you're a swinger baby as the search continues for Scotland's home of the year [Music] thank you foreign [Music]
