so people somehow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's why i'm singing [Music] [Applause] i'm singing in [Music] [Applause] these songs over 60 years this is my daughter my daughter that's the piano yes indeed can the messaging song that you touched thousands of people and made them see jesus that they never would no one in the world know me better than my daughter birther brother i was known as the mother-daughter team and you know she wrote a story about us and one day she decided to read it to me my mother sister will make fort smith and daughter have traveled extensively from coast to coast north east and west you name it we've been there what were we doing mission work and singing to great crowds and small congregations we picked no limitation when it came to serving people who really want to hear us we did not choose a certain crowd we worked about 1 000 revivals we made our average 2000 program yes indeed and some of our great churches we work when i say work oh yeah and labor hard yes i like this person we didn't have to be highly educated we didn't have degrees of music no but god was ever present and we had been to so many cities where gospel sailing was very unknown but before we left that they become very involved and interested in the songs you can remember and singing groups and soloists you remember yeah we have went everywhere teaching the solos we got great solos who we know we had a hand in raising them no but really the true facts no single greatest small has made it without the aid of my mama sister will make for smith it's your full-time gospel and inspirational voice for the gateway city yes this is columbus gregory here for k-i-r-l we'd like to invite you to join us this coming sunday as we gather to honor that legend of gospel singers mother willie may ford smith for her 60 years of gospel singing this special tribute is bringing together such inspiring singers as the lowest barrett camel and the barys sisters from the winter city of chicago st louis's on zola jackson price and the favorite o'neill twins with the interfaith choir don't miss it when i first started out singing gospel the churches didn't want it didn't want that shine stuff in here we don't want a ragtime singing in here but that didn't stop me i kept going because that's what god wanted the gospel in song and now everybody's doing it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] me [Applause] [Music] hallelujah [Music] sounds mighty good [Applause] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey [Music] [Applause] if you can't talk to god if you can't say something do you be neighbor about god if you don't know god need to start over again [Music] well thank god for professor dorothy he's the only one that would dare to make gospel music what it has become today he took the church music spirituals hymns and kept them up put a rhythm to them and called the gospel he was the first one to write and publish gospel songs before mr darcy they didn't call me gospel 10 i was just a spiritual trainer revival worker and he said if you listen to me you can go far and he didn't want the second best because he's the roughest peon he wanted you to be good or nothing and you know we didn't have the freedom to sing gospel in our churches but dorsey got us together and told us who we were he was the first one to organize the gospel singers convention the convention came out of the people struggling trying to get together and doctors say you get in here we'll help you and i made some of the best missionaries that you ever want to find they call me the father of gospel music i started at pilgrim baptist church right here in chicago i formed the first gospel choir know i've been working with them for oh my god i don't know how long uh since i was young we thank you lord for last night's sleep i've always had struggles but i didn't take them too hard and let them destroy me i've been thrown out of some of the best churches if they were good in ministry men they would have helped me and now to throw me out but i got up on my own and went on to the world with it and many many people has been helped and saved by the [Music] that gospel blessing that we so greatly need the choir is a great thing to me i've directed choir all over this world but yet when i get back here i feel better then and uh i'm not going to hold you for you've got a lot of work to do in this man's world the musician the singer and those who can make that music count it's gonna be heavily used by god himself now enjoy it for i done my best best i can if my friends don't understand when my day is over [Music] hey hey faith will cross me over when our master is [Music] [Music] i see [Music] shall we shall we say it [Music] [Applause] me [Applause] i don't know anyone that has written songs it's hard searching as thomas a dorsey we come out of experience in him that's what he says there's no sound that could equal precious lord he wrote precious lord when he was discouraged and his spirit was broken anyway i was in a revival and my wife was to become a mother i went away with a feeling that she'd make a lovely lovely back people were well when i left home and is this it for me to come to the door i said boy i brought me in the telegram i took it and read it i almost fell out says hurry home your wife just died i don't know how you would accept that but i couldn't accept it at all and uh a friend of mine put me in the car and took me right home i got the woman i jumped out and ran in to see if it was really true and one of the girls you started crying says neddy just died and it just died and that he just died and fell in the floor the baby was left alive but the next two days the baby died now what should i do then and then and then they tried to tell me the things that would soon be soothing to me but none of it's never been soothing to me from that day to this day but uh do fellows come back i forget their names you're a friend of mine and they were telling me about it and says i don't know what to do and i don't know how to do and uh i just tried to make my little talk to the lord but it was wasting i think and uh i called the lord some one thing and one of the other says no that's not his name say precious lord i said that just sounds good and yes it got several amen so precious lord and ladies and gentlemen believe it or not i started singing right then and there for a voracious lord take [Music] i am tired i am through the night [Music] to the light take my hands [Music] [Applause] [Music] indeed if you don't leave me home leave me until i reach home you can't beat it and i've done it from me from here to europe all over europe and some of the eastern uh western uh countries and they all accept it do that precious lord thing and i'm going to keep on doing it ladies and gentlemen until the lady that i worked with then makes another appearance and she's been dead for a long long time so that means what that i intend to live on the lord's shoulder for many many many moons hey everybody you gonna go in the raw because i'm just gonna sit these boxes on plates i'm not gonna have a napkin in front of you yes man i mean up in your chest i'll put one up there all right just get the food on the table [Music] listen little william a little willa don't worry about the mule going blind put him down welcoming keith the boy i'm so glad to have you here baby you see this yeah just keep fighting you saw yesterday if he's gonna be mother thought that i was gonna be a preacher see that vision was wrong no i don't know some of the preachers they tell me a call by the thunder wait a minute he said he doesn't really know yet oh when you are divinely called man you go you go okay nobody tell you nothing because you know grandma knows you're gonna study with god he's gonna study with you no matter you're going to find more quite a few people who didn't know about gordon's death but then when they found out about it it made them even stronger beautiful keith is saying no the lord hasn't called me yeah i don't really know about but what we're saying all right yeah we talking about people just like jonah tell me about this dress but i want to tell you that's a nice thing to change the subject on but i want to tell you this one thing it's a called you to preach jonah was told to go to nanoway a wicked city at the preacher gentlemen you go down and preach the people down there and tell them what i say see when you read your bible you know what you're talking about this book tells you such a scripture but in them you think you have eternal life keith's thing on being a believer of the will is it well he'll think he's in the bell of hell if you don't want to do what the lord said i didn't say that he has to go home and he he's got to do it or what but if he is and he don't do what i said the lord i'm a living witness i'll stand and look at you and say why didn't you obey god mama i'm not cutting you off about the whale but uh you're sweetie man but all of us ain't gonna be sweet like that i'm going to get off that track but i'm going to get back home the devil in order to get you to cease what you are doing for god will use a thousand trips but you have to be just as persistent as he if you were going to survive that's right but you got to tell the devil you can tear my stocking all right you can flatten my tie i'll catch a cab you can close the door of the bathroom and i'll i'll take a wash up instead of a shower i'm going on anywhere [Music] mother smith had to sing when the children didn't have no food she had to sacrifice her own personal life living for the master and you see that's a great word oh yes it is my brothers and sisters when you like mother smith can give up and surrender to the lord at the at the expense of the devil and i know the devil was busy he closed doors in her face wouldn't let us sing that blues even stuff in the sanctuary preachers turn their backs on me amen but that's what they do to you when you're a child of god you don't have too many friends cause your friends don't want to hear that stuff [Music] [Music] that's all right it's all right that's all right [Music] oh [Music] foreign you know how i've been pushed around and some of them said i was this and i was there but i kept them i'd have no condemnation and because everybody's trying to do it now was it like bringing the blues into the church once really they said i was bringing the blues and then you might as well be betcha smith and mammy smith one of those sisters you make me sick with that stuff well i said that's all the stuff i know i have to do this stuff like i know it your songs also and your prayers all pray growth within your kitchen and your rants all paid five dollar stockings i was one of the great bloomsmen that traveled the country over with more rainy and many of the great singers and got great money for it and i've written in blues business i wrote over 300. [Music] i'm living easy that's all huge people would stand for hours to get to see more reigning i was her pianist and real all her music out for now [Music] just got too heavy [Music] [Music] now what's wrong with that nothing if you got a good woman you don't feel good to get out of feeling good say hi man somebody i know when our ladies are held so bad maybe don't ever do that god's still in business and if you're god's child or anything into god he'll take care of you put you on top and come off the bottom i started to work in blues because they were something that the people loved but most of the people who took that were not christian people and i was doing all right for myself but the voice of god whispered says you need to change [Music] professor darcy had something that he didn't know himself just what to do with it he just kept trying to find someone that would help him to put over what was in his heart that was miss sally martin who sang his songs and acted like a business manager for him he taught me sent me many places he had the money and i had the singing and she was a great singer great handed folk would come in by a sheet of music and he just had a little white bag in the drawer and he just dropped the dimes in there so i could see he wasn't keeping up with nothing i said you got something yet but you just don't know what to do with it well i i addressed you to do and i took over and he lives today on it thank you i made it for him in 10 years so it was mine to travel around and wherever i'd go i'd carry the music sing the song sell the music after the service was over and that's the way mr dorsey's business was built i don't know what you're gonna say here yeah that's your friend was just about to cross the swelling time was your first one asking you if you would do me a favor kindly take this message to the other side if [Music] [Music] you may be oh [Music] [Music] of my brother [Music] tried to see my savior first of all [Music] you see my savior tell him that you saw me when you saw me i was on my way you made me someone who may ask you for me [Music] beautiful my child yes that's all too i want to show you around honey okay because you haven't been here in a long time i said you haven't been in a long long time how about that uh right down the block right over there that's where i had the gospel singers singing clinic is this where um professor dorsey and all those guys uh professor dorothy came middleweight is blocked now i think you remember that we would analyze your voices and see what you can do oh you know who gave you the authority to analyze voices not no no the lord the lord okay now uh you're going up this way for no no reason at all but down this way is where you should go where there's information to make a right turn okay now here we come in this crew like i still like right there on that corner right there you see where i first started my workout why did you stop going well i stopped going to like they didn't want women preaching you know i kind of agree with that you do i agree with that wholeheartedly oh my god you've been brainwashed and i'd like to help you bible bring watch me while you go and get the bible you see if god can make a jackass talk could god come he can't make a woman preach maybe he can but i i really have bad feelings i don't agree with that because of what i i don't that's not what i get out of the bible as far as women you know in the pulpit i just don't like it i'm not too fond of it and if a woman is nice enough to cook your food make your beds clean your house care for your children and you how come she can't take the word and carry happier i'm not a chauvinist or anything like that ought to stay in their proper place well what is the proper place behind the man oh dear god did not take me out of the man's back tell you what why don't you tell me about all these churches sing in all these years ago and everything i tell you because i don't i want to respect my grandmother i don't want to make you mad i didn't know you had that type of feeling well i mean i didn't i really didn't know there's no big thing yeah don't get upset i'm not upset it is a problem sometime your family get on you you know there's a lot of jealous in the family it's not a poison jealousy but tell us it's just jealousy they don't want you to go right they you can't hang on to me oh yeah you know mom i've got to leave for houston i got to go to new york and they want me on television in california and they don't want me to return home for at least a couple of weeks i've never been away from home for two weeks and it's causing a lot of problems in my home i don't know what to do you know zelda it's hard being a gospel singer having a career i have been down to the union station getting on the train and look at my little kids they will be brought down there because they know mother don't leave us yeah all right well i'll see you later i went to springfield uh madura in revival i called home i talked to my husband he said you ought to be ashamed of yourself these little children are here and you're running around down what good are you doing i told him on the phone i said look i'm gonna leave you in the hands of the lord because i can't remind the bible what i'm doing now god has given me this way he said if you're not on that train saturday morning i'll be you just stay there cause i'll be after you and that night i had a terrible time in the revival meeting the man in there i think it's going back to jesus and he said he's going to pat my hips and when made me start wearing robes yeah yeah i like the way you build up i'm a battery and i just kept singing to that man going back to jesus yeah i could hear my savior called and repent and tears are falling yeah and he looked at me like he was crazy he turned his head inside and after tears just drove down his cheeks here i got off the train on saturday morning my husband was looking up in one coach for me and the lord made him know let her alone yeah he fell in the in the elevator shaft he did looking for me not paying attention to this elevator that takes out the baggage down in the basement he was injured so bad he couldn't get up after he sit down and that man stayed that way about eight years well he said he was through he wasn't gonna bother me anymore when you realize you're not doing it just for dulla and get the children and the support of the children and the husband the family all that out of your mind and see souls out there that are drifting yeah and you throwing out a lifeline angela's just as true as i'm talking to you today right god has a way for you to go yes ma'am and you can do what god wants you to do but you do it with the hand of him leading you i may not be the best at anything oh i have the best of anything sometimes i feel like i'm the least of all [Music] and he is [Applause] [Music] hey [Music] he's that [Music] [Music] [Applause] somebody [Music] is when the spirit anoints that void that's what the world don't understand about gospel singing it's a different singing when you're anointed to sing and that's what our this department is striving for anointed singers i asked dr daugherty was there any place in the singer's convention for the gospel soloist he said no we don't have a place for them that's too much work i know what you're going up against i said would you give me an opportunity you said get out there and find them so i didn't [Music] see you got a good voice i want you to know that you got a good boy but you throwing it away hold it kind of cup it in your mouth you know you can't be pretty mouth insane you know i'm serious about it now what i'm saying to him is going to get all of us i trust in god wherever i may be [Music] oh see i'm closing in this is like a piano right in here you you hold the tones right in here hey but you got to do something with it make them go right all right now let's address them i trust in god don't be afraid to put some of stepping the petals here is the main thing gospel singing must be thoroughly understood i heard him right on the floor they're saying i hear choirs and of course and singing and nobody knows what they're saying and that's sickening to call it gospel now if you want to go on that high class okay you go on up there but if you're going to sing the gospel you must let it be a spell you cast on the people with your indentation from almighty [Music] a special treat in a convention they were just youngsters they would come to me and ask me a question oh mother smith why did you do that [Music] [Applause] they've come a long way since they've been in the convention people would hear them singing in different programs in different churches and they had quite a reputation before they start recording but after they recorded that made it more so when i first heard the lord i felt like she was so sincere to be such a youngster she wasn't singing for sure she was stinging out of her belief [Music] i feel that mother smith you really really know the lord and that's what really impressed me as a child the way that her life spoke along with her songs this tribute does a lot for me it makes me look back and see the young people i've encouraged i'm worn now and i'm tired but i love every minute of it i just making my children together yeah when you used to be glad to sing in the convention right as most singers are we still mother smith's children uh twin boys when she first started presenting us we were only nine to ten years old my legs can hardly reach the pedal then you know one more time i gave him my heart i gave him she would just say oh i see my little twin boys here my sweet boys come on up babies come up and sing for mama you know [Music] that's when you're giving me the little breaks right you know what i'm talking about you got to feel better than that okay [Music] it was a great thing for us just to have a personal mother smith statue to even recognize you as young singers coming along that was a big thing [Music] some people got in this gospel thing just to get the dollar but not the o'neill twins and i thank the lord that they have the essence of what professor dorsey had started out with featuring this time the grammy award nominees backed up with their power packing interfaith choir yes it's eddie and edgar o'neill the o'neill twin sings [Music] you [Music] me [Music] [Music] in my service [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] when we were putting together our format uh people in the knowledgeable people in the radio business told that country and gospels would be the 1980s explosion yeah you got all the contemporary artists doing the gospel music and of course it's crossing over and it's selling i know as far as we're concerned i would like to just do the traditional and be able to come down the middle too with some contemporary and you know bridget together where you can reach you know both sides if you're going to stay alive because you got this young crowd out here now you know and a lot of the older folks that we were singing to uh 20 years ago they were going home to sit down now but you got to appeal to the younger crowd out here so i think you got to have both of them i think you got to come down the middle you got to be able to do them but we have us we have a song i know that seems to appeal to the to the young people i noticed last night that they really like it so it must be something in the song and the beat of the song or something it's the beat the first thing you need to catch his ear once you catch his ear hey he's staying with me right you got it now all of a sudden he's listening to religious music didn't know that right you can see an artist like mama who's been around for 60 years if you notice that even she and some of her music uh has changed a little bit over the years as she's come forward she never reached commercial success like was that a thought from mahalia jackson she never reached yeah the commercial right she never got the commercial success you got to understand that my father was there and and my grandfather was a tremendous influence over it so anything that even remotely uh was connected to the world like commercialism it was turned down her job was to preach the gospel she was an evangelist music was the way she could do it uh contemporary information or whatever that message got to be there in the days like you're living in now the time like this is that message got to be it's the people got to understand just what you are saying when christ he really came into my life oh yes he did [Music] oh you i won't see [Music] around i'm so glad so glad i can see no waste time [Applause] i've come too far from where i started nobody told me nobody [Music] i don't believe it he brought me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he [Music] he brought me [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh you dolores hubbard is the minister of the bathsheba baptist church on the south side of chicago he wants her to help him at the church and the church people wants her so bad she works just as hard to a small audience as she would with her sisters to a large audience and sometimes i think she goes a little further to get the spirit moving in that church the lord is in this holy temple all of us ought to keep silent and to be reverent in his presence let's go before his for enter his presence with praises and with thanksgiving and give honor unto his holy name [Music] praise the lord good morning everybody good morning glad to be here this morning [Music] [Applause] [Music] we're amen this morning we've got shelter clothing and stretch we're blessed won't you sing with us [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we are [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you can be saved this morning and just coming up here is just doing it publicly you are saved already but for witnesses and for verification could you say i believe in my heart i believe in my heart that jesus christ said jesus christ is the son of god he's the son of god and he came okay and gave his life and gave his life [Applause] oh you are saved today yes and you are a new person and it's my job to feed you and to nurse you amen and to help you grow up amen amen uh to europe oh yes we got the call we're supposed to leave here in november maybe we could go along a little earlier he wants us to come a little earlier then how long will you be gone approximately five or six days yeah well but these trips are getting longer and longer and then you'll be going over sunday won't you yeah then it would be longer than five days well you know i'm talking about this actual scene but i didn't include the traveling so i don't know no you know it always is a question about like the church you know like you directing the singing sort of you know more or less kind of being there with me some of the time you know we'll be back i'll get the service ready i mean the song's ready as to the songs and then someone could just conduct them and then one sunday i don't think it'd be too bad i could get somebody else to do it isn't that it's just that no one can really take your place with the ministry that you're doing nobody else can really do it like you do it and i'll be glad when the time comes that our ministry can be together as a husband and wife team more than you know you and your uh your sister's team you want eggs with your sausage no no i just take some toast give me a great opportunity you know frank this has been my life dream to go abroad this has been from a childhood day i dreamed of being a great singer and singing over in europe and and now that the chance has come to just stop and you know and and and don't uh be able to to fulfill my dream when it is really coming into reality it would be quite a letdown to me and maybe after i've gone over there and see what it's actually like then maybe i can really come into what you really want me to do and your in your ministry am i getting this over to you [Music] [Applause] [Music] he didn't say that your way would be easy [Music] only to make us [Music] there is something missing [Applause] [Music] and there are problems that needs a little fixing turn them over to jesus [Music] look how far we've come from where we first begin [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] has become a business now years ago you know it was different we were the gospel singers was evangelizing mm-hmm huh right when i came up in gospel we didn't do concerts we did revivals we did the singing and we had to have a minister to come in and give a sermonette and we stayed in one church one week and we would catch tremendous crowds every night years ago uh that was the big thing people being saved well now we're living unfortunately we're living in in a hit record society right yeah well i think it's unfortunate for gospel music because we get a lot of time we get caught up on the hit record and miss the substance and that's why i like the baptist churches sometimes you know uh it's a little different thing we were at a baptist church sunday in saginaw michigan and you know get back on some of that old stuff and at the cross and throughout the lifeline and all that they know what you're talking about but when you get up there on the stage where you're competing with uh with a ticket price of six eight ten dollars then that that's a performance got to have a little showmanship in it uh regretfully unfortunately when you pay eight dollars for a ticket you come to me entertaining let's face it now right because you worship at church right yeah yeah you wish if it took so that's not a worship service i was guilty [Music] ah [Applause] [Music] i was guilty [Music] [Music] he picked me up [Music] [Applause] [Music] sweet [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] save my friends [Music] [Applause] [Music] the spinach [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Applause] [Music] [Applause] memory [Applause] well mother had this program you know she was the first black uh to have a gospel program at keel auditorium and it was called bringing the nations back to god in fact it was the first gospel music that was ever held in the auditorium she felt that she could move out of the church and come into a civic setting she said the her thing was to take it out in the world preach the gospel to everybody every place that was a form of evangelizing for her but it was a swinging thing because nobody else had ever done it and by this time she had national recognition so therefore when she got ready to plan the program she could pull stars from our people who were renowned in the field from every place and they would respond to her like sister rosetta the golden gate famous golden gate quartet you remember yeah and mahalia jackson thomas darcy yeah i remember all of the running around they had to do yeah the old man he was running around putting out play cards and he was the so-called business manager and that was one heck of a job oh yeah but you know dad had big ideas anyway but he was always supportive of anything she did but i think he recognized her talent too he recognized what she had to offer yeah way more than she did because what she did she just took it for granted that that's the way it should be dad used to even pantomime the songs that she was saying yeah you remember i used to pat his foot one ago yeah he was the biggest cheering section that's the way that's the way his feet would look when she would when he would be sitting there and he'd always sit on the front always sit on the front front bench and he would critique it then he would be just as happy he had that happy expression look around to see who was enjoying it [Laughter] okay use it never turn back and just never [Music] never [Music] the rain may fall [Music] [Applause] [Music] a long time ago in this world of temptation [Music] now i'm back on the road to the city and i'll never turn back no more [Music] [Applause] is [Music] never heard more [Music] union station hmm but i oh this place really holds a lot of memories though remember when mother was just to get off the train this big entourage your fault coming off the train it was really something to see always the last one off always yes true what really used to fascinate me was the way the pullman porters responded to man and daddy didn't do a lot of tipping because you know that wasn't an apropos in those days they just knew him that's true but they would just bow and scrape to her and she'd come strutting down this place like a peacock they really thought she was somebody of course we did too yeah we took a lot of it for granted but you know looking back hot stuff and you know sometimes now people talk it will make it for who yeah yeah and it's hard for us to imagine that nobody knows yeah the kids now you know yeah oh yeah i believe you know this gracie here yeah but she wasn't madame willie may force me we think about where she was and that she's older now and how much it meant to her then and dad's gone and all of that all those emotions that were so significant you know and was such a big part of our lives we didn't think about it at the time that's true but you know you think about how happy he was every time she came in every time she came and we never we never uh it never did it never did affect us and i think because just talking about and just being in this environment i i can when we first started driving in here i i got sad i i really feel sad to see the decay too and think about what what it used to be and what it is now you really don't how much you meant to her yeah if you blot out your man you don't think about it as it is but once you come down here and put it all together into one package jesus i won't be through with my work until god takes my voice i may have cracks in my voice as wide as the banks of the mississippi river but old mississippi keeps on flowing and i believe that that's where it is with dr dorsey he's been very ill with two broken hips but he made us all look around and she said that all coot can go a long time and every time you see me jumping on that walker and i'm thanking the lord for that and my daily prayer is for mr dorothy to meet us in the next convention i hope he come i want him to come he lights it up like a shining star [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] get my rewards [Music] [Music] two living legends at one time when you get that right you come on now go check it out oh you've got all that number when you came through st louis and we had a middle state quartet convention going on you and mr fry you went back to chicago and you explained this gospel field to mrs bucks a theodore fry i remember well and mrs lucille jones was in with it do you even remember well this one time come after them because there was nobody but theodore from magnolia lewis butts and mr dawson when mr dorsett they talked and said i think we could have a convention yeah but you see so when he come back to the office he said what you think about it i said i think it's all right and then he decided we're gonna have it in chicago in 33. i know yes it is the real root of it was and sprouted from st louis for the with the middle state quartet convention and i was president of it mr garcia and mr frye got the idea and went back to chicago and organized a convention which was the proper thing to do so you see i know that happened that happened when the man didn't ask for the idea he asked about when did it start he didn't ask me who got the idea well you know it started don't you 19 and 33 in chicago pilgrim baptist church jesse austin was the minister the convention was definitely organized in saint louis at washington tabernacle baptist church got brought into head to voice meeting dad was in chicago right but we gave out he had a few scattering remarks in chicago but when he got to head office was elected president secretary and i went to a saint louis i told him i didn't want to be no secretary and i don't give my blood pressure about it let's look at it okay bring it out wherever the book says wherever you have more than one and have what what i say you have trouble all right [Music] the night before their opening ceremony of the convention we draped the room in white to purify it for the consecration service white is pure the scripture said white robed angels sang the story praise the lord praise the lord thank you jesus the red roses please this i know jesus loves me [Music] where we the consecration is the rededication of our lives to the gospel work through [Music] we song the lord jesus for being saved we ask that all who come tomorrow will be blessed in the name of jesus revitalize we strengthen that this will be a great great convention will of god that he came to this convention he thought he wouldn't get here but the lord made a way never never know what the law [Music] so let it be done unto you this weekend [Music] jesus [Music] peace well gentlemen it's a nice ride what he was seeking to get the people together the folk who were discarded in churches and what have you he laid the foundation and he opened up the way where no more darcy but the things he's done will live on and i believe in what one of his songs says remember me not just for me but for the work i've done [Music] i am [Music] and strength there i shall shadows overtake me and trouble starts to bring when i've done the best that i can do my best friends talk about me sometime i can folks too but i take it all to jesus how about you how about you how
