I heard this on my local NPR station and wanna pass it along because it covers a lot of the same ground in different context (the CEO of Whole Foods is defending Capitalism) and it's also featuring Richard Wolff: https://www.intelligencesquaredus.org/debates/capitalism-blessing
The problem with Krugman's argument is that Sanders doesn't run on "democratic socialism," and he just about never brings up the term unprompted. He simply refuses to be disingenuous about how he's described himself in the pastβdoing otherwise would compromise one of his most important attributes, which is his frankness and consistency over the years.
I like the part where Krugman keeps saying that he supports Sanderβs actual agenda (become more like Denmark) but has a few criticisms about his branding and political strategy, and this dude keeps on insisting that Krugman is a centrist and out of touch with the youth and what not. There is literally no reason to turn away allies like this or label people who agree with you on the important substance as centrists or not welcome. We need a big tent in 2020 and pushing away someone who agrees with virtually all of Sanderβs policies is so dumb.
Imagine giving your political rival the opportunity to call you out as an evil socialist or communist with full invective rhetoric. All because you failed to advertise your political stance from the beginning. That is why honesty is the best policy.
If these first three state primaries are any indication, people are smarter than Krugman thinks and he is wrong about political strategy.
If the primaries are misleading and the broader public is getting their education through MSNBC and Trump rhetoric, then Krugman is correct about the socialist stigma having a negative effect on political strategy.
Submission Statement: Paul Krugman & Richard Wolff discuss, among other things: Bernie's self-labeling as a Democratic Socialist and whether this will be a barrier for him against Trump. They also discuss his supposed 'electability' which is a topic Sam has brought up beforehand, most recently in Podcast #187.
I think this was a great, level-headed discussion that is well worth a watch!
Just here to point out that there's no such thing as a Nobel Prize in economics. It was invented decades later by a bunch of bankers as an ideological shoehorn, because economics is just phrenology with calculus.
The average, low info voter will not care about the socialist label. They didn't care about Trump caught on tape committing sexual assault (didn't he win the white women vote?) and a lot of crazy nonsense said during his campaign...I just don't think people care about this or how he's being taken out of context on Fidel and Sandinistas.
Big shout outs to Amy Goodman and Democracy Now. Serious journalism by people concerned with facts and muckraking attempting to avoid bullshit at all costs.
Why do people still take Paul Krugman seriously? He's been so wrong about so much.
