[Applause] it's the last days of summer in san francisco [Music] hello and welcome to san francisco this is the gateway to california and one of the best cities in the state for selfies and sightseeing this is where i grew up so i'm really excited to show you guys around we put a list together of my favorite places to visit with or without kids let's go [Music] hello [Music] san francisco is one of the most vibrant colorful and exciting cities in the world there aren't many places where you can conquer a global icon go back to the 1960s and end up in the world's most famous jail but if it's your first time here what is there to do and where should you go here's our ultimate guide to the city by the bay check out that skyline san francisco feels more european than most stateside cities yes there are the high rises in the financial district but the architecture has great character and it's all very walkable despite the steep streets and some very windy roads if you're looking for tips on how to get around the city we'll have a separate video for you on the end screen soon right let's see some sites first up one of the most famous not just in california or the usa but the world you can take some great photos of the golden gate bridge all around the city it's always exciting when she pops up this one was taken at yacht road but some of the best are at marine drive where you get this view don't just go to the vista points which are put on google maps we're not that kind of tourist are we if you've been to the bridge before or you want a unique photo for your feed head to baker beach and you'll get the natural view of marin county on the other side marshall's beach is a bit closer but you have to hike the last part it's also classed as a nudist beach so you might see more than you bargained for if you go there take the batteries to the bluff trail or should that be buff trail from baker beach to see the big reveal i've overdone it now haven't i now what's better than taking a selfie at a global icon conquering one cycling across the golden gate bridge is a unique experience right two tips for you when you're biking across the bridge dress in layers because it can get really chilly or really blazing hot also find a place that's really close to the bridge that way before you get on the bridge you're not already too exhausted to go across [Music] beyond marina drive which has cycle lanes [Music] jump off at baker street to look at the impressive palace of fine arts it was part of the 1915 expo and it still looks just as stunning next to the lake [Music] back on the bike it's a fun and easy ride along the beach after that though the ascent to the bridge can be tough so if you're out of shape or with a little one don't be embarrassed or annoyed if you need to take a break or walk parts of it quick tip make sure you do your biking in the morning because there are lots of hills in san francisco that you need lots of energy for baby now [Music] we made it to the top so we do the last bit yes [Music] when you're at the top you're ready to do something you'll never forget [Music] how often do you say you touched the golden gate bridge [Music] there are two options when you reach the other side head down to sausalito for some lunch and get a ferry back to the city you can sail to pier 41 near fisherman's wharf or get another service which goes to the ferry building that's another great place to stop for some food too and it's all downhill the other option is to turn around and cycle back the way you came for another chance to ride across the bridge we did it [Music] i absolutely love it it's so much better than stopping taking a picture and leaving because the whole thing is like one big long picture oh it's just beautiful and good family time the kids love it it is a hard cycle but it makes it that much more rewarding when you've actually done it we did it together and when you see it in a movie or when you fly over it or when you see it on a poster we can all say we did it and let's be honest the best thing about san francisco is that so why would you not want to spend as much time as you can looking at it wanna get a free ride across the bay well sort of it's included in our next attraction alcatraz [Music] we've all watched the rock and heard about it but how much do you really know about this notorious prison as i said the cool extra thing about going to alcatraz is that you need to get there the ferry gives you some amazing views of the city from the water if you're lucky with the weather yep we always forget how changeable the weather is here the city seems to have its own climate even if it's a hot day i'd recommend taking sweaters and jumpers [Music] we filmed this video in july and check out what the difference is in weather each day sorry back to alcatraz you can buy tickets from loads of different sellers online these can be great if you're doing a deal and you like their prices the official tickets though are through alcatraz cruises.com and there's a nice discount on the family tickets which is what we did you could easily spend half a day on alcatraz there's loads to see on the island there's a cracking audio tour which brings the jail to life it was like this before kovid so don't think you're missing out on proper guides after you can go around the prison at your own pace [Music] we don't like ranking marks then he gets punched no he's not real do you think it looks scary right do you want to be locked in yeah it's a yeah sentence 18 years when you're done hop back on the ferry to get back to pier 33. hmm pier 33 isn't that famous nope pier 39 is the popular one now this is a really touristy area so you may stay here for two minutes or you might stay for two hours there are loads of shops restaurants and other attractions even an aquarium the piers residents are fun to see whatever you're looking for though i'm gonna win the seal contest no worries the sea lions migrated here in 1990 and have never left why would you with a view like this although i think they're more interested in the free herring from fisherman's wharf [Music] the kids wanted to eat at butter gump which also has great views of the bay remember san francisco is a foodie capital of the world so there are great places to eat everywhere there are a couple of national treasures that were born in the bay firstly ghirardelli chocolate this is what we now bring back as gifts for the brits as we never got very good reviews on hershey's chocolate domingo girodelli opened up his first shop in san francisco in 1849 but didn't move into ghirardelli square until 1893. the company moved out in the 1960s but there's still a shop and cafe with some original machines on display to see how the silky chocolate is made [Music] guys doesn't it just make you want to go like this pre-covered you used to get a free square of chocolate as you went in hopefully that comes back again soon [Music] oh my gosh smell that guys oh does that smell amazing if you guys could smell this through the camera oh one of the biggest and best well-kept secrets of san francisco is sour dough bread if you've never had it it's amazing it's one of my favorite things to eat and the best place to get it is boating bakery [Music] right near fisherman's wharf you can get a bread bowl of sourdough bread with clam chowder in it with fresh hot clams the secret to sourdough is that there's a mother dough bread where that yeast has been handed down literally for generations and generations and it's out off the same bread that's been going for years and boating has one of the best ones you can get look at that smile hang on wait wait wait wait wait wait wait ah that smells like home dips on the end right as this is a first timers guide you've got to ride on the iconic cable cars they've been on the streets since 1873. did you know the wooden brakes have to be replaced every two days and the cables every few weeks as there are only 38 cable cars in the fleet you're going to have to wait your turn there are usually big lines at union square for the two routes that head to the water so why not save yourself some time and take it from fisherman's wharf instead or you could walk on a stop or two from market and powell and they'll let you on if there's room another tip is to take the california line which isn't as popular but it does go through chinatown and stretches from the ferry building to van ness street speaking of chinatown this is worth a visit especially if you're hungry it's the oldest and biggest chinatown in the usa it's also a fun place to take in some unique sights and sounds [Music] just walking in san francisco is fun and like nowhere else in the world don't underestimate how long and steep the streets are though [Music] come on you're only halfway up make it look easy don't i yeah you make it look really really easy [Music] this is why you might want to invest in a day pass for public transport david don't let go of my baby i won't let go i'll never let go jack two hands two hands two hands the most famous road in the city is lombard street it's the one with eight hairpin bends in one block it's fun to watch people wind their way down but it's probably even more fun to drive it expect to queue at the top if you do and if you are going to tackle the most crooked street in the world do it at the beginning or end of the day so you can park your car and stay green for the rest of your trip the view from the top of lombard street gives you a beautiful cityscape with coit tower as the centerpiece this attraction is 210 feet tall and has offered panoramic views of the city and bay since 1933. you have to pay to get to the top and don't expect to spend too much time here as it doesn't take too long to get around it's still a fun landmark to visit though [Music] okay so if you want the real history of san francisco you've got to come to hayton ashford one of my favorite places to visit as a teenager it's the birthplace of the hippie movement back in the day you would have even found my mom and dad on these very streets in the free love movement and it still looks exactly like that today this is where you could bump into some of the biggest names of the time jimi hendrix janice joplin and the grateful dead not only lived here but they performed in the neighborhood park which is called the panhandle their legacy lives on through the murals shops and the people you'll see here we got to watch the magic mushroom being repainted when we were there [Music] only in san francisco it's a fun place to people watch and to explore the eclectic shops the panhandle park i just talked about is the small arm of the huge golden gate park it's three miles long and nearly half a mile wide there's so much in there we could probably do a video just on that there are museums lakes and sports facilities our favorites are the japanese tea gardens which you'll recognize from many hollywood films [Music] and the california academy of sciences which sounds like a private university building but it's a fantastic interactive museum that is perfect for every age of your family it's great for a rainy day and you could almost spend the whole day here [Music] outside is a new ferris wheel which will give you a view of the city from the park what is it yet another attraction if you're going to do a day in golden gate park see i told you it needs its own video right let's get back up high again shall we so here's the golden gate bridge and the huge bay bridge but look what's over here fancy watching a ball game well you can watch the giants and see if anyone can hit a home run into the water just a bit further down is the new chase center which is the home to the golden state warriors the team have moved back to the city after nearly 50 years in oakland it's a great chance to see some of the biggest names in american sports here but remember to book ahead [Music] now how about a way that you can see everything in two hours well the open top hop on hop off big bus tours take you everywhere we've talked about and more want to see the painted ladies jump off see the view from the top of salesforce tower go for it it's also another chance to go over the golden gate bridge which is always worth it especially as she hides some days i think the kids had a better idea going downstairs [Music] there's also a great commentary tour which points out the sites and gives you even more facts to help bring the city's history to life if you download the app you can see how far away the next bus is so you don't end up waiting for ages we'll link to the site below as some come with alcatraz tickets too if you've traveled far to get here remember you're also very close to some other special places just 40 minutes away are the majestic redwood trees at muir woods and from the golden gate bridge you're just an hour away from sipping wine in a famous napa valley or sonoma county vineyard where should we go to next pick a video [Music]
