Tom Ripley I mean Oliver quick is a character that has a lot of complexities to him but at the same time he's a relatively simple character to understand throughout the movie saltburn we were lured into a false sense of security into believing that olle was an individual that didn't have Sinister intentions and was only just a little strange however as the movie developed forward and by the end of it we saw the complete Psychopathic and sociopathic nature that olle had buried within him which actually made up most of his core so with Ollie being one of the most interesting characters that's been on screen for a little while I thought I'd delve into the character his upbringing analyze his disturbing mind and see if I can explain exactly why he's like the way that he is and what caused him to be like that so let's get into it here is 's disturbing mind analyzed in salurn just to let you know this video will contain spoilers O's environmental influence and how it turned him into a sociopath one thing that's noted when when it comes to killers and serial killers is that their upbringing is something which is deeply connected to the actions that they carry out when they're older according to a study which was done in 2020 it was said that 74% of serial killers suffered from psychological abuse as a young child and 42% suffered from physical abuse what makes Doe's case particularly interesting is the fact that from a family perspective it seemed as though he was brought up in a loving home where there were no issues with his family whatsoever when you look at when Felix surprised Ollie and took him to his family home we saw that his family were extremely excited to see him and there was no fear that was present within olly about being around them it was only the fear of him being caught out for lying about his rough upbringing his father's death and the fact that he was an only child olle came from a middleclass background with parents that cared for him and with siblings that were around him so olle falls into the percentage of killers that come from a background which would be described as relatively normal and traditional however one sty may have had a normal life growing up within his family home it appears as though the external factors and people outside of the home could have influenced doe into becoming the person that he was in the present day we heard Ollie mention how we'd never had any true friends before and that Felix was the only person who he'd ever been close to as well as that we also saw that when he arrived at the University he was met with laughter the moment that he stepped foot on the grounds plus he spent the first night celebrating on his own at a party that nobody turned up to he had nobody to sit with in the dinner Hall other than the person who had been pushed to the side and he didn't have any friends whatsoever if this is what we took away from olle after only a matter of mere moments of him being at the University grounds it's clear to see that he's most probably been like that throughout the entirety of his school life meaning he could have spent most of it in solitude with nobody around him being picked on and potentially thead which in turn could have caused him to have spent more time inside of his own mind and to not develop in the way that one usually W in terms of Social Development this could be one of the main reasons as to why he developed a deep resentment towards the type of person that Felix was and the people at the University maybe because the popular people were always looking down at him and judging him for being different we heard that olle was always on his own when he was a child and he actually wanted to be an only child which shows that he was probably jealous of the attention that his siblings got and that he wanted to impress his parents the most this is something which was carried through into their interaction when we heard that olle had been lying to his parents in saying that he was the top scholar at Oxford was on the rowing team and was working day and night in order to stay at the top showing that the lies and detention that were present when Ollie was younger was something which was still around when he was older too trying to Garner that praise and attention from his parents the lies that he told his parents were different to the lies that he told Felix and that was because it didn't matter what he was lying about as long as it made him interesting and different and got him the attention that he craved and desired that was enough because outside of him wanting saltburn he wanted attention something which was seen most when people were singing happy birthday to him and he was smiling but when they didn't remember his name his face dropped completely and he was filled with disappointment showing that artificial attention which was bought still wasn't good enough O's lack of social interaction when he was younger is something which most probably ties into the fact that he's a sociopath there is said to be seven symptoms of being a sociopath and many of them sit within what olle does for example one is a lack of empathy for others this was seene when olle not only killed Felix but then when he sat around the table with his family and pretended to mourn with them but also when he set up the death of the other characters and also threw Farley under the bus the second is impulsive behavior which was seen when he killed Felix as a last resort due to the fear of his lies being exposed another is lying for personal gain ol's whole personality and character is built upon lies no matter matter who it was that he interacted with and he stuck with them he lied because he wanted to gain saltburn and his whole relationship with Felix was built upon a lie for gaining and finally another that aligns with Ollie is attempting to control others with threats or aggression this was mainly seen with Farley and Venicia Ollie had Venicia under his thumb where he wanted and was controlling her due to the threatening nature that he had and the intimacy that he gave her and he also did the same with Farley however he failed to control Farley in the way that he truly wanted to so after this it's clear to see that OE is most definitely a sociopath when it comes to the core lining of the character and the traits that he has buried within him I think a lot of that is due to the environmental factor in his life not his home life but maybe his schooling and the fact that he chose to isolate himself for a lot of it wanting to be alone and not being able to develop in the way that one usually would what motivate olly what I found particularly interesting about Ollie when watching the movie was trying to truly understand what motivated him obviously he set out on this master plan to inherit the saltburn estate because he wanted that lifestyle to not be ignored anymore and to have the attention that the rich like Felix garnered from those around him but I feel like there was more to it than that surely there has to be right would Ollie have killed if he didn't need to I think eventually he would have done but the fact that Felix was going to expose his secret made him accelerate his plan and bring death upon the family even sooner one would say that because waited 17 years for the plan to reach its result it was something that he deeply desired and never forgot about when looking at the different categories that Killers fall into olle sits under the category of a comfort SL gain killer an individual that kills because they stand to gain something because of it they're described as being individuals that are looking for financial gain and an improved quality of life through murder something which definitely sums up poly so despite me thinking that there was more ingrained within him which would connect to something which motivated him I don't actually think there is I think it's as simple as just olle wanted something so he killed in order to get it and because of the sociopath that he was it didn't bother him in the slightest Ole's complicated relationship with Felix olle is a character that definitely had his complexities but he's also a character that at his core is motivated by the simplest of things material gain that's what it was all about however the obsession that he had for Felix was something which was very intriguing this was love or care like you and I know it it was about Felix being the bridge between O's life that he had and what he stood to gain on the other side of the river he never truly loved Felix he loved what he stood for the aura that he had and how he projected the very person that he wanted to be and all he grew to be obsessed with that was he physically attracted to Felix yeah I think he was that was obvious in the way that he acted but when you go deeper than that there was just nothing there he was almost like ol's toy that he could play with because he was obsessed with with him he got Thrills out of lying to him and he enjoyed the attention that he got from Felix because as I said at the start OE never truly had any friends before so it was new to him hence why there was a sense of upset when Ollie had to kill Felix because he knew that he was single-handedly ruining all of the fun that he was having so their relationship was forged through 's sociopathic behaviors and the obsession that he had with Felix and what he stood for not out of true emotions or a connection he wasn't in love with Felix he just loved him and way that you and I probably can't really understand would olle kill again the scary thing about the ending of this movie is that olle got away with it all he was dancing around happy with the fact that his 17-e long plan had come to fruition and was now complete he got what he always wanted after playing the long game to answer the question on if olle would kill again personally I think he would he sits under the category of a comfort SL gain killer and if there's something for him to gain that means that he'd have no problem in doing what he did to Felix and his family in order to secure what it was that will make him feel comfortable there's no stopping Ollie from killing until he's truly CAU and the fact that he celebrated everybody being dead it showed that he knew that he got away with it faced no consequences and was going to be living a better life because of it which means that there were no negative thoughts that were associated with what he did or the idea of him being close to getting caught so Oliver quick is a character that I feel would definitely kill again if he had the opportunity to gain something which maybe means a sequel nah I'm just in there's no chance of that so there you have it the disturbing mind of Ollie from saltburn analyzed
