all right so today we are testing the RX 7800 XT in Allen wake 2 so today we are pairing this with an i72 700k CPU from Intel that again is paired with ddr4 3600 megat transfers per second memory C4 32 GB of it I'll put up all the specs on the screen right now we'll be testing at 1080P 1440p and 4K currently we are at 1080p native even though FSR says it's enabled there we are rendering internally and a native resolution and we're just on the high preset and no rate tracing is uh enabled yeah right so let's get this uh oh wrong buttons once again so let's just get the show on the road we're getting around 80 frames per second here which is pretty decent considering that this game is extremely demanding to run now this is the second part of the wood you have to progress slightly further than when you initially get to the woods yourself so the lighting is a little bit different if you do see some performance differences uh between your own tasting that's probably the the reason why I'm basically done with the the woods just this is just before we head back to town for the second time so anyway I there's a lot of people that that claim that my benchmarks are fake um I assure you they're not um I've got a second PC here capturing all the the performance or all the footage then I've got MSI ofin on this monitor here on this PC here just to capture all the performance metrics and I run everything at stock right so if you do see some performance differences it might be that you're using a different system but you got different Ram you've got a different vendor GPU even though this generation the different vendor gpus don't really uh differ that much or manufacture I should say so this is an XFX 319 Merk a pretty decent G GPU and you can see that it's actually staying quite cool it's it's drawing around 250 watt and the 470 TI draws around the same power maybe slightly more but the the 4070 TI that I have reaches around 702 73° so cooling Solution on this GPU is actually pretty good all right so not going to be testing too much at 1080p I think um we'll just drop this down to to the medium PR just a spoiler alert nothing changes in the the performance here like nothing major we went from 87 frames per second to 91 frames per second right so I I did make the MSI After Burner slightly smaller some people did ask me to make it bigger but then some others told me it's a little bit distracting if it's that big so I'll try and call out the numbers as often as I can so at the end of each run obviously but as you can see between the high preset and the medium preset we we didn't really gain much so I'm not going to be doing a full run to the end there as you can see the the performance is pretty similar which is kind of strange because we we're not CPU bound you can see our GP usage is hitting 100% usage there it's drawing 255 wat at times so it's definitely making full use of the GPU it's kind of strange that at 1080p we're not seeing a difference between medium and high but when we enable FS R there is actually a bit of a difference meaning we're not CPU bound so if we use FSR quality I'm I'm just going to go through the the settings quickly here but I do want to just show you that we're not CPU bound so FSR set to Quality meaning 720p internal resolution still on the medium reset right so we had around 90 frames per second and if we check now we we've got around 115 120 frames per second so a decent bump in the frame rate there meaning we we're not CPU bound otherwise the the frame rate would not have increased so not entirely sure what's happening with the the preset at uh at 1080p at 1440p there's a there's a much bigger difference uh with the presets but anyway so it goes so you can see our average here is is around 120 frames per second so if you are looking for a high refresh rate experience then 1080p on the medium preset but if quality will get you there with this GPU remember this game is perfectly playable at 60 frames per second without R tracing and uh it's it's really like it's it's pretty slow paced the the action is is slow paced as well the the shooting combat everything is is quite slow so really no no need to or no requirement to to get above 60 frames per second a lot of people kind of did I dodge I'm pretty good so actually unlocked an achievement for that a lot of people say yeah you don't need more than 60 frames per second and you don't need more than 60 frames per second I agree but it's very nice to have more than 60 frames per second anyway so 150 frames per second average and 1% lows are sitting at 75 and 0.1% lows are sitting at 60 so pretty respectable although the 0.1% lows are relatively lower than without FSR right the relative to the average anyway so let's let's just see if we use these exact same settings and we just use rate tracing I'm just going to use the low preset for rate tracing the medium preset enables path tracing which we'll test as well so 115 frames per second goes down to 55 frames per second so we we literally lost half of our frame rate just by enabling rate tracing even on the low preset so rate tracing in this game is extremely demanding especially more so on AMD gpus unfortunately the RT cores on AMD gpus are still quite a bit behind Nvidia gpus and rate racing is is kind of you need to be selective with your your rate racing there are games that perform pretty well with the rate racing enabled on the AMD gpus especially the 7,000 series but those are generally games which use less rate tracing features right the more rate tracing features you enable like rate Trace Global illumination ambient occlusion Shadows Reflections that kind of stuff like the the harder it hits AMD gpus it's pretty tough on invo gpus as well but they do perform significantly better if there's a lot of rate r ring effects but if you're aiming for 60 frames per second then I think this should be fine I mean we got an average here of 58 frames per second 1% lows of 43 and 0.1% lows of 40 frames per second all right so let's just see if what we actually need to do to get 60 frames per second locked if that's uh your requirement so FSR balanced still medium preset over here and then the low rate racing preset down here right and we we didn't G much we gained 10% give or take but the frame time graph is is really misbehaving now and not entirely sure why it doesn't really translate to inconsistent frame pacing uh when I'm actually playing it feels okay this is a 4K 60 HZ monitor if uh if this was a higher refresh rate monitor we might have seen some frame pacing issues but I I don't think I don't think there are and the frame time graph does seem to smooth out a little bit um the more we play or depending on the area actually you can see in the specific area it's quite quite erratic but rate tracing in this game with an with an AMD GPU maybe maybe not like we we not able to maintain 60 frames per second at all but there is a a silver lining this is a very demanding area in this game one of the most demanding areas in the game actually and that's why I tast you all right it's uh to give you the worst case scenario and you can be assured that everywhere else in the game the performance is much much better so this is this is worst case scenario I I don't want to Gaslight you why is it running away I don't want to Gaslight you into testing in town and getting 120 frames per second for example but as soon as you get to the woods that halves like it doesn't reallyy but there's around a 30 to 50% uh better performance in town anyway I'm just uh waffling on here so 61 frames per second average 44 for the 1% lows and 39 for the 0.1% lows so once again almost 40 all right so that's going to not conclude our 1080 testing we still need to test path racing and that's the wrong button so we'll just use the medium preset for for this as that enables the path trace the direct lighting and indirect lighting increases the D noising quality like you would probably play this on low even though I'll I'll show you now you you won't be using path tracing in alen Wick with a a 7800 XT unfortunately we went from around 60 frames per second to just under 30 frames per second remember this is at 1080p on the FSR balanced preset if I remember correctly let me just verify that on balanced right so a pretty low internal resolution and we're not hitting 60 frames per second let me just reset the numbers and like this is just Testament to how demanding path tracing actually is i' I'd say that if you if you want to use path tracing like you need at least a 4070 TI and above like that that's the minimum for me like you can get away with a 4070 but you'll have to set your your expectations realistically maybe play 1080p or settle for 30 frames per second or use aggressive up scanning but I do think that uh if you if you want a decent balance between performance and visuals then something like 47 I would probably be your best bet all right so it's not looking good here with path Tracing Our averag is 38 frames per second but our lows are actually respectively or relatively High uh considering the the average there our 1% lows are sitting at 32 and 0.1% lows are sitting at 28 so let's just let's see if we if we drop this down to Performance which is 5 40p internal resolution so literally half of uh our 1080p resolution yeah like we're getting 45 frames per second I'm not going to be doing a full test run here because uh kind of pointless we we didn't gain much and if we then use FSR Ultra performance so 360p this is even lower resolution than 640x 480 of the old CRTs of old and there we go 60 frames per second and I must say that upscaling this game does does uh look quite okay obviously not at 360p if you if you're aiming for 60 frames per second with path tracing FSR Ultra performance is unfortunately your your only way and at this point the visual degradation and the visual sacrifice is just not worth it like you you use rate tracing to get better visuals Shadows Reflections lighting amid inclusion that kind of stuff and all of that just goes out the window the moment you have to run at 360p internal resolution so not uh not something I'd recommend at all previously well when I recorded this uh like a half an hour ago all these guys dropped a lot of ammo now I'm not getting any ammo anyway we are basically still just below 60 frames per second average at 59 good enough if you're aiming for 60 and 1% lows are sitting at 46 and 0.1% lows are sitting at 39 or 42 there we go I think that concludes our 1080p testing so let's just go ahead uh restore the high settings here and remove Ray tracing all together and then we'll just move to Native 1440p all right so native 1440p High pret and no Rad racing is making sure all right um off we go so let's just reset our numbers and you can see now we're getting pretty much the same frame rate as what we had with par tracing at 1080p running internally at 360p so FSR Ultra performance this is a much better experience it's a much better looking experience it's some like this this just changes the game completely running at Native 1440p versus 360p UPS scale to 1080p nobody should be playing like that uh I know it's your Hardware you can do whatever you want but 360p internal resolution just to be able to enable some rate RAC options like that's that's definitely not not what you should be doing anyway that's just uh I'm not even going to say that's a recommendation like just just don't do it um it's just a joke guys don't I'm not telling you what to do with your Hardware I've actually had some people uh in the comments saying I shouldn't tell them what to do with their Hardware whatever anyway so 56 frames per second but the frame time graph is actually a lot smoother now right so FSR at 1080p we had some issues with the frame time grow but uh I lo it's funny enough the 0.1% lows are always sitting at 38 40 frames per second uh 41 so it's um it's pretty decent we had an average there of 56 frames per second our 1% lows are sitting at 49 and 0.1% low sitting at 41 All right so I mean that that was actually pretty good experience all right so let's see if we drop them the preset here down to medium if we actually gain something now remember this is just a name it's a name for a preset as you can see a lot of things are still sit too high right so I don't uh this is not really medium I you can select everything to medium you'll get a a much better performance increase here and as you can see like nothing much has changed so we went from 58 frames per second to 62 frames per second dropping down to medium and I'm actually just going to to leave it here because we we might be able to maintain 60 frames per second more often than not so let's just uh let's see what we can actually do to get a a bit of a high frame rate not that you you absolutely need it 60 frames per second for this game is absolutely fine but for those of you who want to make full use of higher refresh rate monitors let's see what we can do here for you so FSR set to Quality still on the medium preset and uh pressing the wrong buttons FSR actually does a a very good job here at improving the frame rates we we saw the same with dlss actually so it's it's quite necessary in this game to to use upscaling and uh it's just because the game is is extremely demanding it's got many many rate RAC options although we don't have uh Hardware rate tracing enabled at the moment if you want to to see optimized settings then I would highly suggest you watch a digital f Andre's video on alen Wake 2 Alex did a nice performance analysis and he's also giving you some uh some settings to like a performance or um optimize the performance settings right so it's it's worth it to check out the channel there if you if you want the a nice balance between performance and visuals and now we actually got quite a few bullets here we do need some batteries all right so so 95 frames per second FS set to Quality I think it's it's actually pretty decent um we can go down to FSR balanced at 1440p in my personal opinion that's where I like that that's pretty much the the lowest or the more aggressive or the most aggressive I'd go with up scanning at 1440p some games handle it better than others but this game in particular balanced seems to seems to work quite okay so let's just see we we just had we just above 90 frames per second now we are just above 100 frames per second so not a not a big difference like around 10% 15% performance increase or increase in the frame rate uh just by rendering internally at a lower resolution so it's not going to maintain 100 frames per second but now if you if you install the FSR 3 mod which unfortunately this game does not support natively it's a separate mod to download you can uh push like 120 140 frames per second to fully maximize your 144 HZ monitor for example that's that's pretty much what what I'd do if if I had to daily this this GPU for myself I actually do daily all my gpus that I that I Benchmark there's another enemy I think I do Benchmark or I do daily all the the gpus that I Benchmark just to get a better feel of what the gpus are like like on a day-to-day basis and not just run a benchmark like once every 5 days and uh just give you some numbers so the 7800 XT is actually doing pretty well the only issue that I've had with it so far is with Adobe Premier Pro which I use for editing and uh it does it does miss the Cuda cause if you if you come from an inid GPU anyway so pretty respectable frame range here just above 100 frames per second definitely not terrible considering the settings so let's just use rate tracing low I'm going to leave the settings exactly as they are right because as we as we saw earlier rate tracing is extremely demanding in this game and I'm suspecting not 60 frames per second okay not terrible if you are aiming for 60 frames per second 50 is close enough I'd say there there are some issues with um with 50 frames per second though if you don't have a a variable refresh rate monitor you might see some some screen tearing this this is actually a vrr monitor but it's connected to a an alato uh Pro 4K MK2 and I do disable vrr on it because on AMD gpus specifically there's like a lot of screen flickering when vrr is enabled on the uh on alata capture card so like some something to do with the the vrr pass through or something is not working as it should but as you can see 50 frames per second with respectable settings here I think like could upscaling is not too aggressive and performance is not terrible but if you do aim for 60 frames per second you will unfortunately need to use something like FSR performance probably let's see if we get the 60 frames per second here and we're not we didn't get much like okay fine we we gained between 10 and 20% remember 20% of 50 frames per second is 10 frames per second so still not 60 so then let's just see do we actually need to use uh Ultra performance here would it actually give us 60 frames per second I mean let's do this so the performance gains from performance to ultra performance is actually much higher than balanced going to Performance but now you can just see the trees especially in movement right uh there's a lot of art affecting like with with any upscaling Tech dlss does seem to handle it slightly better especially when you enable dlss raid reconstruction alongside rate racing aalis s seems to or actually does work a little bit better uh it's got a better image quality but once again we need to use ultra performance here just to hit 60 frames per second with low rate tracing and on the medium preset like once again just uh just be selective with rate tracing just be aware of the the gpu's limitations right right but AMD has never been too strong with the the rate tracing performance so so just be aware of that if you just be realistic with your expectations like rate tracing is is not amd's strongest suit especially in games which use quite a lot of rate tracing effects all right so let's just go ahead and uh enable path tracing so we barely got 60 frames per second yeah like 65 frames per second average so let's use path tracing I'm just going to put everything on low right so not that there's any transparency Reflections in the forest here but okay so not utterly terrible but you have to you have to consider we are running at FSR Ultra performance here I'll I'll do a run uh where we target 30 frames per second for those of you interested like you'll you'll probably get much better visuals if you target 30 frames per second than if you were to Target a 60 cuz we're not hitting 60 at all and the game looks terrible with FSR 62 performance at 1440p or Ultra performance actually so it's uh it's even lower than 720P internal resolution 540p I think I might be wrong we'll check just now so I mean if this is if this is what you want you can definitely use it uh personally I don't think it's worth it to uh sacrifice all these uh visuals just to be able to enable path racing anyway so an average there of 50 frames per second are 1% lows are sitting at 40 and now 0.1% lows once again just below 40 and 37 so let's just see if you're targeting 30 frames per second right would balance get us 30 frames per second just okay so I think I mean once again this is one of the most demanding errors in the game in town you will definitely see slightly better performance than this you might get away with fur performance and get 60 frames per second in other areas but the the game does does look better at FSR balanced obviously because we we are rendering internally at a much higher internal resolution than FSR Ultra performance but once again we are getting around 30 frames per second so this is what the the consoles are are targeting in the quality mode anyway so if you are fine with 30 frames per second you you can definitely play at 30 frames per second I just think that it's it's wasted potential really because you can play at 60 plus FPS by just disabling rate tracing with this RX 7800 XT anyway enough time wased at 1440p let's move on to 4K firstly I just want to check so FSR Ultra performance is 480p not 540p there we go right we're back and uh we're sitting at 4K na 4K and we're on the high preset once again and no rate tracing no path tracing and uh this is actually where this GPU is shine right not at 4K but at rest rzed the performance you can see we are getting like 30 frames per second but we we were getting that just now about at like 840p with rate racing enabled on the medium preset this game just looks so much better even without rate tracing just using these settings and we get the same performance right so so much much better visuals than the previous setting and similar performance so the the game does use very good Dynamic lighting but R Racing does make a lot of the the lighting options pop a little bit more but as you as you saw the the performance impact is is quite quite huge so like just uh as I said use it sparingly maybe just use Arizer to the lighting instead of R tracer Lighting in this game as uh you'll see now we actually do get a very decent performance with respectable settings so if we if we drop this down to medium what kind of frame rate increase are we looking at here like around 10% frame rate increase and uh I think medium is is perfectly fine to be perfectly honest let's just see what we need to do if we if we just use FSR quality right right so we were getting around 34 frames per second and now we're getting almost 60 so much better experience especially when it comes to motion fluidity uh getting around 60 frames per second so double off frame rate than what we had with FSR asset to balanced with the rate tracing enabled at 1440p and like just a much better looking game overall because the upscaling is not as aggressive you can actually go all the way to FSR performance at 4K although the artifacting will increase it looks much better upscale to 4K than when it does at upscale to 1440p when you use FSR performance so like that's that's always an option as well if you if you're aiming for a higher refresh rate experience but we had an average of 58 frames per second which is pretty decent I think uh this is at 4K with the FSR set quality on the medium preset and our 1% lows are sitting at 46 and 0.1% lows are sitting at 38 let's just go ahead here and I'm not going to enable rate tracing just yet let's just uh use FSR balance here quickly I just want to see like what what performance numbers we do get this will probably give you a locked 60 frames per second experience if you do enable vsync on a 60 HZ monitor or you lock the frame rate using Ms offin or rtss or something similar you can see our frame rate is around 10% higher than previously and it hasn't dipped below 60 yet that I've seen um maybe if I if it did I missed it but this is this is still looking pretty good right so DS is balanced getting us an a locked 60 frames per second experience here and for the first time well maybe not the first time but our lows are above 40 45 frames per second are 0.1% lows so we we broke the the 38 curse or did we like let's see if I turn around here did we break it we seem to have broken it that's a good job all right so let's just see one last test at with r settings before we test rate racing is let's just go for performance yeah I mean you once again you don't really need to go this aggressive but if you if you want to make better use of a high refresh rate monitor then obviously you you want to to see if you can get a higher frame rate and once again this guy runs away I don't know what it is about this this building anyway let's just uh you died okay that's interesting so let's just uh reset our numbers and then we uh we go from here so like we got getting around 80 frames per second so another 15% performance increase here the game still look looks pretty good and I I don't think it's worth it to run it at FSR performance FSR quality might even be good enough for most people even though we we weren't able to maintain 60 frames per second and uh FSR balanced definitely the lowest I'd probably go if I was aiming for 60 frames per second because that gave us a pretty good experience right uh well I mean it gave me a pretty good experience I'm just relaying that information to you so I think that's it for our 4K rasterized uh settings let's just see what the best case scenario is for rate tracing if we actually just use ultra performance right Ultra performance we'll drop this down to low and then we'll use the low rate Trace preset notcho will be hitting 60 frames per second I mean close enough close enough so 60 frames per second pretty much re rendering internally at 720p on the low preset and like Ultra performance at 4K definitely looks much better than Ultra performance at 1080P or 1440p for that matter anyway see once again our 0.1% lows are just below 40 but we had an aage of 56 frames per second uh 1% lows are sitting at 42 and 0.1% lows at 37 all right so let's just see not that you should be using it anyway but let's just see path tracing if we if we just enable it on the low preset everything said too low here remember we had just just above 50 frames per second or just below 60 frames per second and now we have uh just above or just below 40 frames per second so so once again if you're targeting 30 frames per second this this should work right um although I don't think it's worth it once again just my opinion I mean it's a lot of visual sacrifice you have to make to be uh just to get a semi decent frame rate if you want to call 30 frames per second semi decent with the path tracing enabled like if you if you do want to use path tracing unfortunately the 7800 XD is not going to cut it for you you you would need to spend quite a lot more and you need to decide whether whether that's actually worth it you or not all right so I think that's going to be the end of this video hope you guys enjoyed it if you did hit that like button hit that subscribe button and as always we hope to see you in the next onee
