RWBY Review - How to Ruin a Franchise (ft. Roosterteeth)

[Music] ruby dude was a [ __ ] ever since i watched the death battle featuring yang my 16 year old self could not help but be interested in watching a show where 3d anime girls beat the ever living [ __ ] at everyone every character's design was as badass every weapon was a gun accompanied by epic music composed by casey lee williams ruby was something truly different monty um had an amazing vision to create a 3d anime inspired show on the internet and unlike most of us ever will he grinded hard and he achieved it so with this passing rooster teeth was left with the show and with so much going for it i'm sure the showrunners would continue his work and fully realize his vision you have animators who worked with them and understand this style of choreography an interesting world to build upon and a diverse cast of likable characters that any fan can relate to however hold up two words shane's letter after volume three former animator shane left rt and made an emotional letter detailing how rooster teeth ran monty's vision for the show into the ground and after volume three you can see how the show diverges from his roots and become a mishmash of [ __ ] all ideas culminating into something that i can only describe as hell [ __ ] the world building for ruby is ah the setting before was a streamlined post-modern semi-futuristic society and while everyone had different designs all of them had a unifying theme hey we live in a society we are wearing modern clothing then after volume 30 rooster said [ __ ] that [ __ ] and you have the main cast explore the rest of the world where people are living in villages wearing robes blacksmithing like it's the middle ages like huh there are guns and flying ships before how the hell are you gonna tell me that these two settings are in the same world if there's anything iconic about ruby it's the original volume one outfit you have ruby this mysterious cute teenage girl who is actually a badass and proceeds to pull out a scythe and decapitate every monster around her like holy [ __ ] then yang who is his outgoing party girl who also had a shotgun gone mo 100 to zero death combo you into oblivion i could virtually gush about how cool all the characters were a key word were because ever since volume 3 every character has become a shallow husk of their former selves every character has been redesigned twice now and every rendition is worse than the last first you got ruby yeah the og outfit got the perfect amount of black to red ratio so neither color stands out too much you also got a nice scopic element to the design going along with the theme of being like a rebellious teenage girl makes sense makes sense and then we reach volume four like what the [ __ ] you have these weird white and puffy sleeves and for some reason a boob window even though her skin and sleeve are like the same color i mean you had her alternative outfit from volume 2 that uses a less jarring gray alongside regular sleeves that don't ruin her silhouette or look [ __ ] in the animation this could be said about every character yang used to look cool but now it seems like she's trying too hard blake the character that's meant to represent black is wearing a white coat while traveling to this world's equivalent of australia and the white character is wearing a blue gray now but hey maybe they've learned their lesson and improved in volume seven no they fixed ruby's puffy sleeves but then mixed the white dye with grade eye to make a light gray dye which once again blends too much with her skin color they changed her haircut an iconic element of her design i know it's meant to look like crow's haircut but why would she look up to someone that almost got them all killed due to his drinking problem in fact this volume seems like the one where all the riders want to give everyone haircuts and my god they're all awful did you ever want to see if you could turn hair into rope i love ziploc bags let's put zippers everywhere you know that lady that wears a banana hat that's john now what the hell the show was ruby red white black yellow these designs scream red blue white brown also known as you know you failed when a chinese mobile game company makes a better design than you montume was a self-taught animator and combined with this experience of watching kung fu action movies and you get this [Music] [Music] terrible [Music] fights that are on that high octane energy that combo with epic music and leave you in a state of childhood innocence this was a defining feature of ruby that set it apart then volume 4 opens up with this sloppy slow monotonous fight that lacks that same drag and dick energy from before but hey i thought to myself there must be growing pains from changing animation software the fight should get better they don't there are like a total of 50 fights since volume 3. yeah okay and only two of them are worth watching [Music] okay so the story follows a group of teenage girls going to beacon academy it's called beacon because they graduated from signal middle school anyways they're all training b huntresses so they can protect people from monsters known as grim then the school blows up [Music] because a jackass in charge has terrible security officers and put the controls of all their robots onto one network instead of putting out multiple but hey i just have a friend learning cyber security for all i know the riders are omnipotent and my friend knows nothing anyways they're on the quest to collect the four dragon balls which are magical relics which can only be accessed by the maidens you have winter summer fall and spring spring of course having ice powers and fall for fire powers these maidens also use magic what's the difference between magic and assemblance since they do the same thing i have no clue and along the way they had to stop these villains that want to kill them and have the dragon balls for themselves because gathering all four uh we've been on this journey for over four years and have not been told why the villain even wants them by the way neither of the other villains or main characters have any motivation to pursue this quest but i digress anyways it's revealed that their principle is actually over a billion years old because it turns out the entire time he can reincarnate into other people's bodies you see it turns out the main villain of the show is actually his ex-wife holy [ __ ] it was his ex-wife the entire time oh my god [Music] there is none [Music] none of these characters are logical at all ruby the main character has a rare ability known as silver eyes she was told about this in volume 3. naturally if you had some cool ability that was rare when you want to know as much about it as possible so that's why it would take three volumes until ruby is told exactly what her silver eyes does and she's not even the one to ask many fumbling moments and missed opportunities occur due to incompetent writing volume 3 ruby loses penny and is upset or death [Music] but then in volume 7 when penny is brought back to life instead of being emotionally shocked and glad she's alive she's just mildly confused all again penny i i i thought you died i guess in a matter of speaking she did this all looks great penny but where are we staying yep what a true friend vol 4 focuses on yang losing her arm and dealing with the ptsd that comes with it when she's presented with a prosthetic to replace her arm she's hesitant to try it out i'm not feeling too gray right now everything maybe later and remains adamant about it why haven't you tried on the arm yet it's just taking you a while to get used to it oh what is that supposed to mean do you want me to just pretend like nothing happened i lost a part of me a piece of me is gone and it's never coming back but then she feels guilty about being a burden to her dad and the next day she puts on the arm man dude this is great some great writing i can't wait to see her overcome her ptsd nope next scene she's fine like nothing ever happened [ __ ] i'm not trying to say writing was always a strength of ruby because my god some of the dialogue in volume one to two was cringe but instead of sweetheart you could just call me sir but at least monty was said on improving what do you want the fans to take away from season 2 of ruby this year i want you to learn more about the characters because i pushed some ideas from season two into season three to give the characters more time to breathe like instead of having pira mindlessly fight cinder and die what was supposed to happen was both jon and pirro were supposed to fight her and pierre's death would have been a result of john's own inability he would have to witness his friend his mentor the one who believed in him when no one else would die in front of his eyes due to his own shortcomings but nope that virgin ruby you know the good one it's gone [Music] before i get my ass blasted for ranting about a fictional relationship in the middle of pride month i just want to say that i do not have any prejudices or problems with lgbtq plus relationships and representation in media what i do care about is whether the relationship was well written did ruby accomplish this here let me help you with that blake you don't have to do that i don't know what you're talking about hey are you okay yeah i mean no but i don't know i'm just tired i'm sorry hey i'm not leaving and if we ever see him again i promise i'll be there i'll protect you what what forget it let's just head back not yet you sure i shouldn't come with more intruders means we're more likely to be seen besides stealth isn't exactly your um [Music] do you really believe that or are you just trying to scare me away so you won't have to die trying to protect her she's not protecting me adam and i'm not protecting her [Music] we're protecting each other i'm not gonna break my promise i know you won't we were there for each other black sun was better i knew you would look better without the bow so you want to know more about me finally she speaks nearly two days and you're giving me nothing but small talk and weird looks yeah like that cool i stole you some food do you always break the law without a second thought hey weren't you in a cult or something okay too soon and the best part is she's a faunus but that's a secret okay got it this is it you sure you know i'm just gonna take your word for it stupid dumb neck trap [Music] looks like the dorks made it to the next round emphasis on dork you guys have nothing to worry about i've seen your daughter in action before and trust me she's got some moves and what exactly do you mean by that mr woo kong i uh well you see sir spider i have a lot of respect why is he here again but also he just kind of followed me home i see slightly she's definitely above average this tea is really good huh i like him mom why did you leave your friends behind hey son whoa this isn't the bathroom the next time i go up against lizard girl it won't be for you it'll be to get even my hero oh oh dear would you look at that he's awake thank goodness kali please what you didn't think i was gonna miss your big send-off did you he definitely overslept and absolutely almost missed this so you're really going to vacuo that's right and i have to admit i think i was kind of getting used to having you around i go where i'm needed and you don't need me anymore well when you say it like that it sounds sad [Music] and just like that the ship has sunken [Music] so have you heard of a game called undertale the amount of manga and supple material is immense it's not bad as it gives fans more content however the supple material does such a good job of flushing out the characters that i just have to ask why isn't half of this stuff in the actual show and some of this manga varies dramatically in quality it's pretty much just a cash grab as every form media outside the show is canon even though some plot points directly contradict each other but as a wise company once said fake manga cells this show does a lot of it before aura was passive and invisible and now people have to activate it and it shows when the aura breaks whenever this happens instead of creating suspense that the character will die i just think to myself okay the fight's over and some [ __ ] miracles gonna happen they also retcon adam this villain whose philosophy was about achieving change through violence serving a great foil to blake was turned into abusive x stand down wait marta how did you do this what are you doing trying to get us all killed i am making humanity pay for what they've done even though in volume two blake stated that he was just a mentor i had a partner named adam more of a mentor actually this end credits scene from volume two where yang finally meets her mom raven you know a parent who abandoned her that yang searched for desperately to the point that she was endangering herself and her sister that's not cannon anymore because they removed it from monty's there are so many problems with this show that i can't reasonably cover within one video so if you're a true ruby fan you should read this because this this is just a [ __ ] cake on top of everything [Music] [Applause] ruby is a frustrating show it's one brimming with potential but the company behind it has betrayed the legacy of this creator and the show this doesn't even come close to what it used to be i watch the show in hopes that it gets better because i want ruby to do well not only because i love monty's work but because of what it stands for it is an anomaly in the entertainment industry a 3d anime on youtube becoming profitable and popular it sets a precedent of how far something like this can go but these last four years have proved to me that all rooster thief cares about anymore is a money they have the resources to make a great show but they lack the soul that made it great in the first place montume has just been relegated to name on the title card and we're never gonna get the amazing show he envisioned and wanted to share with the world but hey i heard the fan art from the community is pretty good [Music] [Music] in my yeah [Music]
