hi and welcome back to the show you might recognize this this is a pressure Packer to repack your bearings part of the procedure when you're checking your trailer brakes and that's what we're going to be doing today with the help of our RV today resident expert bill Gare Bill's getting set up over here let's join them hi Bill how you doing today good thanks how are used to just fine so we're talking brakes today right right what are you going to be doing well what we're gonna do is we're gonna pull the hub and drum assembly off now and that'll expose the brakes as well as the wheel bearings when we have the wheel bearings out we're gonna repack them with a pressure pack and that's what I've got right that's what you got right there you can buy these at any auto parts store maybe 10 or 15 bucks okay so let me pull this cap off the first thing you want to do is is pull the cap off the dust cap then we want to pull the cotter pin out sometimes you get a little bit stubborn but they will come out often do you have to do this well my recommendation would be once a year or 12,000 mile whichever occurs first this is a lot of us preventive maintenance if there's a spring broken anything like that or a bearing getting ready to go bad you'll see that so this is a spindle nut here and then we're going to pull on the drum and that's going to release the outer bearing how's this look it looks good it probably needs a little bit of grease but we'll take care of that okay so let's pull the drum off oh that looks a little nasty in there done yeah the Black Widow we got a spider watch again watch that I didn't bite you these are your standard 10 inch brakes these are your shoe and linings this is your electric magnet here and you can see as a magnet activates the rotation that will actually pull is it Alexi activate the secondary shoe in which in turn it will activate the primary shoe alright bill now that we've got it apart I guess we should inspect the inside write your rights do it what we want to do is we want to check the shoe and lining we want to check your magnet how do we check the magnet well it what you could do is you can back your tow vehicle up to it have somebody activate the brake control which I've already done once you take the pliers and see if it'll stick to that magnet okay anything metal should stick right there anything metal should stick to the magnet there yeah well that's definitely working so you can see and then the magnet actually grabs ahold of your armature here and that's what creates this action here at Alexi moved the secondary issue which in turn will move the primary issue okay so what do we do next now we've inspected the inside well next after we've inspected it you probably want to wash it down just just a hose with water would be good you want to get the brake dust cobwebs and everything out of there so we can go back together and next now now we're ready to pack the bearings this is where we're going to be doing it then right yeah this is the pressure Packer here that I've already got set up and this of course is a one that you can buy in any of the stores and you simply use a grease gun to operate so what I've done is I've wiped off the bearing here to keep it get it fairly clean so I can inspect the Varian for any damage we're going to put it right into pressure Packer here and we're going to squeeze the new grease right through the rollers so you can see that literally pressure-packed to greece right into the rollers oh yeah then before we're done we're going to want to put a thin film around it before we put it back in we're going to seat it before we put the bearing back in bearing make sure it's seated pretty much all the way in there and this is your washer then the nut goes back on now you want to make sure that you preload this spindle nut to manufacture specs right but you also want to make sure that you back it off so that there is no preload otherwise the bearings will suffer premature failure from too much heat gotcha I've been doing this for years so I know how to do it just by feel but I would suggest that you check with a manufacturer good idea put your cotter pin in bend a cotter pin over and then back on with a cap there we are give it a spin and test it you can check for preload by grabbing on either in here and rocking it you can actually feel a little bit of the end plate now one of the things you want to make sure when you put the lug nuts on is to make sure you're torquing the manufacturer specification because they're all different depending on the size right check them often because they do loosen up and that looks like our project that should take care of it and again you want to check your brakes how often once a year or 12,000 miles terrific all right thank you go thank you Stu
