and who said buying a 40 year old classic car sight unseen was a bad idea hello you lot Miller corner here welcome back once again to my glorious Mercedes w123 w123's yes they're mechanically bomb proof and they are known for rusting like crazy everywhere on these cars is a rust Hot Spot I've done a blind guy for Classics world and the list of rust spots was as long as your arm it was in mint but this car is really really solid underneath there's no rotting the floors the Sills the jacking points even the bulk head the boot floor the spare wheel well this car is as clean as a whistle but it does have one slight problem it makes me think I haven't quite got off Scot 3. [Music] a couple of times now I've gone in the boot of this car to get things out and there's been a few little drips and drops on the inner arches here which is then kind of run down here and in really bad weather pulled into a little puddle just in this divot here and initially I thought it was a failed boot seal causing kind of condensation on here dripping down which is why I've got a little dehumidifier thing in here it turned out to not be that because it made absolutely no difference whatsoever I therefore started looking under here this rear bulkhead panel is a common Rock Spot on one two threes and I was slightly horrified by what a sword so what I'm going to do is start dismantling this old girl because unfortunately she's not quite as rot-free as I'd feared now what we're going to do is pull the back seat out because obviously to get to this rear panel it's here we've got the boom boom bass speakers here the factory Mercedes-Benz first aid kit which is complete in there how cool is that and of course we've got this rear carpet for the rear shelf so we need to pull all this off and get these seats out of here but you can just get a little Glimpse just there look and unfortunately what Horrors hide behind it so first things first we have to pull this seat out then pull this back out and then it's those trim panels that bit of carpet and then I can show you what we're dealing with it's a bit grim [Music] and uh what's behind it is not quite so good yep I hope you can see that just here is a nice big rust hole probably about the size of a couple of 50 pence pieces in theory but you can see a little bit of rust there it kind of extends and that is a bit of a worry particularly when you go around the other side and again I don't know how well you can see this it's even worse and that is not despite what it looks Mercedes benz's idea of rear seat fresh air less than ideal to find then and frankly I was a bit gutted when I saw that because had it just been a simple little plate in the floor that had been needed that have been Rusty that's pretty simple to do that is not it's not something I can do because I've never even picked up a welder in my life so I'm actually gonna have to Outsource this job I hate doing that because I like being DIY on my cars but I'm not going to learn to weld on something so complex as this rear window so now we've got the car at least partially stripped down let's take it to a body shop and get ourselves a quote fingers crossed well that proved to be extremely positive I'm here at a place called Full Circle the people who painted Quentin from Furious driving maps were over convertible and they are more than happy to do the work on my one two three as well I've got really old-school world of guy he looked in here poked around that rust in the two corners looked in the boot he said yep should be doable mate but we can't take the glass out for you because it's an old style window you have to put it in with a bit of string it's not bonded in like a modern one and that means we've got to take it out so I'm not entirely certain yet whether I'm going to pay a man to take that window out for me or with a wiggle to attempts it try not to break the window or bend those extremely expensive Chrome trims so the clip we see next will tell you which of those two decisions I decided to make well we're taking it out ourselves it's booked it for rust repair tomorrow so first things first we're going to pull the rear window out so I can get to the rust How's that gonna happen well watch and see so first things first the chrome trim list it's actually just a little bit of careful pricing and it appears to be coming away also this window rubber doesn't look very old it's clearly very soft and pliable just not sealing up properly but dad's pill away at the chrome trim there I need to take off the wires for the heated rear window because the rear window has got to come out and this is part of it so undo this get these out carry on so thankfully this chrome trip the rear window is in multiple pieces and it's all joined together with these little sleevy slider things which move along so you can keep them in place and then when it's all back together just and it goes on that's a good sound effect just slow and steady and yeah she comes good job we've saved that because that's probably about 11 million dollars if you buy it from Mercedes right next up rubber with the Chrome trims carefully removed dad cuts the window rubber from the inside and we work our way around the glass separating the seal and pulling it off plastic trim tools help here since they allow you to lever against the glass on the seal without the potential damage caused by a screwdriver it's then time for the scary bit lifting the rear window out of the car [Music] everything not really I added that sound effect in the edit then we can peel the remains of the seal off clean up some glue left by the previous refit and admire my newfound ventilation mikhail's got no back window so that turned out to be surprisingly easy to do the chrome trim comes out fairly easily if you're gentle with it and the old rubber because we're not keeping it we just cut it basically the rear window is here over there wrapped up in a duvet that's nice and safe and we can actually see the true extent of the issue so if I go in here it's very well ventilated you can see there are your holes it's obviously been fiberglassed up at some point which is less than ideal we do want to get all of that cut out but on the whole it's okay that all looks fairly placeable we can cut that out and plate that there there's a bit of rust at the bottom of this pillar I've just put some rust converter on turning black there there's a little bit here which is gone as well obviously not been very well prepared so that could just be cut and lift and similarly that is about the same really it's just a hole that's opened up and leaks but again we can cut that out fairly square that can be plated hopefully it should be fairly unnoticeable by the time the rear windows back in but we shall see unfortunately it's not happening till tomorrow though it's repair so we're gonna put some polyp in over the back window and hopefully protect all this from being full of stuff as I drive so let's see how well that one goes well we've pulled it in the window all up and hopefully it's watertight because uh yeah Mother Nature has decided that it's going to be a bit wet and wild tonight hopefully that seals up good luck old girl see you in the morning [Music] immediately it's not going well oh God so after a very blustery Drive eventually makes the body shop I've taken the polythene off on the Mercedes is uh they're a little bit worse for wear but smoking's a welding man rust repair will be done so grotty crusty stuff and fiberglass begone she's in very good company though I don't even see in there look Maserati by Turbo Mark 1 escort Subaru Leone that looks like and a skoda roomster whoa and There She Goes see you soon old girl and there we have it where once there was rust and fiberglass now there is metal and it's all been sealed up to keep it protected this is all been painted there was a little bit of rear shelf missing there that's all been welded up so that's all solid as well the bloke's ground all the way back down here so it's safe and smooth even painted a little corn a bit white there and it is world's better now we've got a car that actually is totally solid around the rear window on both sides look and now we're ready to get the back window back in he's hoping we don't break it with a new window seal fitted around the glass we feed some wire into the groove that slots over the window aperture we then lower the glass into place and Dad slowly pulls the wire out from within to pull the lip of the seal over the car I keep pressure on it to prevent it popping out and with a lot of patience and perseverance we eventually get the window refitted and sealed after neatening up the edges the Chrome trims can then be lubricated with washing up liquid and carefully slotted into place once again this is about delicacy but with patience and many cups of tea the job is eventually done [Music] so there we have it then the Mercedes has been totally Rush repaired it's near as solid as a rock all the way through it's got a new window seal on it and the back window after a little bit of struggling is back in makari's watertight and it's ready to go it's taken a little bit longer than expected and as you might be able to tell it is slowly getting dark so I'm going to rush inside this car does need a bit of tidying off of being in the body shop a few little bits to sort for a start you might be able to see there's no back seat in it at the moment but we'll get to that in a future video for now though thanks very much for watching Everybody catch you soon and have a good one thank you [Music]
