Ruger American Ranch Rifle- Deer Hunting 350 Legend

hi everybody i'm richard with small caliber arms review today we're going to take a look at another option for hunting if you live in one of those states that allows hunting of deer with straight straight wall cartridge only this is the ruger american rancher chambered in 350 legend has a 16.3 inch threaded barrel on it it does have a user adjustable trigger on it it is a bolt action rifle it comes with a five round magazine and it does come with a a rail mounted on the top of it to mount your scope on it you put whatever scope you want on there or whatever rings you want on it but this one unlike the axis 2 actually comes with the scope mount on top of it alright this is a loaner gun and the owner has already sighted it in which is nice because i don't have to do that part of it now but uh the magazines are an ar style magazine so an ar magazine actually does fit in this gun but it comes with a five round and we're going to go ahead and put some of the winchester xp ammo in here they are a 150 grain uh ballistic tip or what they call a extreme point round we're going to load five of those up in there and take some shots on 100 yard target up there and see how they do all right it's it's exactly like an ar the controls for the magazine are anyways you just put the magazine up in the mag well there if i can find it and your mag release is a button just exactly like the ar buttons on there it may even be the same one i'm not sure but it's it's the exact same texture on the outside of it so just pop it up in there make sure it's seated all the way in and then rack your round in there you got a tang mounted safety on the back of it just a two position safety and then you've got a cocked indicator on there that lets you know whether or not the gun is cocked or it's already been the trigger's already been pulled all right he got the eyes and ears on and one of the things i want you to notice about this is this he actually put a muzzle break on this it's a nine millimeter muzzle break which is perfect for this caliber and it actually does quite a bit from what i can tell to reduce the the muzzle jump on this thing because i noticed very little of it when he was firing it we're going to go ahead and take a couple shots at the bottom target up there and see how it does [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] all right there's a five shot group let's go up there and look at the target all right so there's the five shot group 100 yards one two three four five uh that's not bad it's probably the widest spread and there's probably an inch and a quarter somewhere around there um that's definitely enough to take a deer at 100 yards piece of cake definitely with inside that kill zone in there now sighting it in here's a couple of the ones we did up here or the owner did up here this was kind of the first one the second one there and then the third one there's four shots right there within an inch and then one just outside of it the gun is perfectly capable of what it's meant to do and that's on deer in states that allow only straight wall cartridges for hunting deer all right there's the five shot group the ruger american rancher even uh even though it's only got a 16 inch barrel on it still the accuracy on this thing is great a hundred yards i think i did better with this one than i did with my savage axis ii um either one of them even the mossberg patriot i think shot a bigger group than that but all three of them are still perfectly capable of taking deer and that's what their intent was for these guns that's that's why they were designed and to give you another option for deer hunting in one of those 18 or so states that only allows the straight wall hunting of deer only um it's a pretty nice little gun it's really simple take down on it there's a little lever on the left hand side over here all you do is push that in pull your bolt right out it's got a pretty nice stainless three lug bolt on there ejector and extractor right in there the machining is not the smoothest i've ever seen but it's functional and it works great no problems with it whatsoever now the ruger american rancher is available in a few other calibers too so you can get this in i've seen it in 300 blackout i've seen it in 762 by 39 it's available in 556-223 it's it's a pretty popular uh i guess platform but this one being chambered in 350 legend has a specific purpose for it the rest of them if you live in other states where you can hunt with whatever cartridge you want that's it's great for it this one's topped with a vortex crossfire three to nine by 40 scope on it it's got the butler creek flip up sights on it i do like those especially when you're going through the woods and stuff you don't want to uh you know the i've got the bikini cover type covers on my axis so you got to pull those off and then you're carrying them around with these you just they're just flip ups they're already on there you don't have to worry about losing them or anything i've seen a lot of people put a little chart inside the the optic side on there to a ballistic chart so they can range and guess where they're going to be at or whatever but it's a pretty good shooting rifle and with that muzzle break on there i think it really minimized the the muzzle flip on it it kept it pretty stable now this one we he took the bipod off the front of it just because we were using the hydro sled here but uh i mean it's got the the studs on it for sling and bipod it's got a nice rubber butt pad on it pretty comfortable gun and one of the other things that he pointed out to me was that when you go to rack your bolt on there it's got a pretty good clearance between your bolt handle and your scope where my axis actually has a line on the side of it there from that bolt being flipped up and scraping down the side of it but this one doesn't suffer from that problem you probably don't have to worry too much about getting your fingers between the two and slamming them up or scraping them up but it's a it's a pretty good gun it's going to run you probably around the 400 range somewhere in there maybe 450 uh depending on where you're at and where you buy it at um but it's going to be somewhere around there and if you're looking for a 350 legend to do some deer hunting this season with or next season go for it if you can find one pick one
