hi guys it's dinner from Bijou diamond jewelry in London with another watch video and today we're comparing the Rolex GMT master Batman versus the Pepsi [Music] so as with all my reviews let's go back in time now and look at the history of these two watches just have a real basic look at the history but I've already done individual reviews on both these watches so go check those out I'll link them later on in the video but skipping back to the 1930s and 40s air travel was becoming much more popular mode of transport you know it's becoming more affordable as technology got better and then by the 50s technology improved greatly and aircraft were able to travel much greater distances with many more passengers and that meant that aircraft were now able to travel across different continents and therefore through different time zones and that meant that pilots that were flying these aircraft were constantly having to adjust their watches to accountant or traveling through these different time zones and that was quite tedious process for them so in the early 1950s the American airline Pan Am contacted Rolex and said will you create a new watch for our pilots that enables them to basically adjust the time zone on their watch really quickly and easily and also simultaneously monitor two time zones at once and so this was just around the time that Rolex released the Submariner in 1953 and and a year later on after they released the reference six five four two which was the GMT master standing for Greenwich Mean Time and this watch basically was a very very similar watch and designed to the Submariner slightly modified with a new movement to account for the addition of a date function and also a 24-hour hand and also a completely new bezel that was able to move in either direction so it's bi-directional and featured 24-hour markings on it and that's the way that pilots were able to read different time zones through this 24-hour hand and the bezel combination of the two so really cool new watch very very popular with the pilots as it meant they could quickly adjust the time zone when they landed in their new place in their new destination but also at the same time using their hour hand a standard minute now and have been monitored the time in their place of origin as well so many different variations of that watch occurred and after the reference six five four to that first reference loads of different models that Rolex clearly created over the years using different Gold's different styles different colors etc etc but the models we are interested in were kind of the mid to late 2000s as that's when we saw the new reference come that we're looking at today so the first one was released in 2005 and that was the one one six seven one eight which was the yellow gold GMT master with the new super cased a much larger bulkier case size still the same case size of 40 millimeters but it was a much bulkier style of case and in line with all the modern watches that we see now from Rolex they all feature that same super case when you're looking at Samarin and GMT master that is later on Rolex released steel variations of that watch in 2007 with the one one six seven one zero Ln and then later on in 2013 which is the most important one that we want to talk about today which was the one one six seven one zero bln arc which is the predecessor to this Batman that were looking at today and that featured a for the first time a two-tone ceramic bezel and that's an incredibly difficult thing to do to be able to combine ceramics a different colors of ceramic and seamlessly stitched and together as Rolex has done on this bezel previous to that obviously Rolex has done lots of stuff with different two-tone bezels like of course 265 42 the original reference featured a pepsi bezel that red and blue bezel but this was the first time in 2013 that they were able to do this in ceramic now just give another few years on to 2018 last year at Basel which is when we saw the release of the Pepsi that we're looking at here today with the red and the blue bezel knapp harks back to the original reference from the 1950s the 65 42 which featured a pepsi bezel as kind of the iconic gym team asked to look having at that pepsi bezel but another really important change to start watch was the addition of the jubilee bracelet again harking back to this original reference 65-42 from the 50s because those original references has kind of a little bit later on featured jubilee bracelets as a way to separate them from Mariners make them look a little bit different because of course the case looks really really similar to a Submariner so Rolex wanted a way to kind of separate the two so yeah really cool addition to the watch and watch also got a new movement last year which features a new 70 hour power reserve now moving on to this year 2019 a couple months ago in March we saw the release of this Batman that we're looking at today which is the one two six seven one zero DLNR so exact same watch as the Pepsi released last year but this one features a black and blue bezel and this is basically just an updated version of the previous model which was released in 2013 the one one six seven one zero B LNR that includes the history and a little bit talk about the different models if you want to go check out my individual reviews of these two watches then make sure you do so there have you released a couple weeks ago but I'll still try and cover a similar level of detail in this video so let's start with the features and we'll just use one of the watches to discuss the features because they are exactly the same apart from that bezel and a small detail on the dial we'll start with the clasp as always both feature the standard Oyster clasp with polished center part and an brushed outer parts and in polished sides the clasp is a fantastic class brilliantly engineered extremely comfortable a fantastic everyday wear they are brilliant because they are so solid they don't tend to wear out over time they still keep their snick and their snap obviously got the fold over part of the classroom as well so yeah really brilliant everyday wear a clasps really brilliantly built very well machined and not really as detailed as something like a Patek Phillipe clasp or an Audemars Piguet clasp but they just really do serve a purpose and they're fantastic everyday wearers they also feature these two clasps feature the EZ link adjustment which allows you to quickly and easily expand the bracelet on your watch and make it slightly lighter by five millimeters in fact and which is brilliant for when your wrist gets slightly or expand slightly in warm weather during the summer or just hot days and this can be a really nice feature to make sure the watch is nice and comfortable obviously doesn't feature quite the same adjustability that the Ronix sub glide lock clasp does but either way it's a really nice welcome feature to have on this watch now moving on to the bracelet which is a really important feature on this watch both of these watches in fact is the Jubilee bracelet that's kind of the biggest difference a new addition to these watches was this new Jubilee bracelet the Jubilee racer features brushed outer links and polished Center links ever since its release in 2005 this super case size or style of case for the submariners and the GMT masters have always featured oyster bracelets so now this is the first time in all those years to see this watch on a different bracelet and it really looks cool you know we've seen people previous to that putting you know other bracelets on these watches but never has it been a stock option from Rolex so this was a really important released in 2018 when the Pepsi featured this bracelet really nice bracelet much more comfortable in fact than the oyster bracelet because this bracelet features so many smaller links it conforms to any risk shape much better in fact than the oyster bracelet but either way both are very comfortable this one just has the slight edge it definitely completely changes the look of this watch makes it slightly more dressy slightly smarter so it really is your personal preference as what as to what you'd prefer because at the end of the day this is a sports watch so if you'd prefer the sporty look with the oyster bracelet then go for the samaras or the older references of the GMT master but this is a really cool look and the reason why Rolex has brought back this Jubilee bracelet is because the original reference 654 - from the 1950s actually featured on some slightly later models the Jubilee bracelet and Ronix brought that as kind of a way to differentiate between the Samoa and the GMT master at that time but the kind of real reason they did that was because the Submariner was a tool watch a utility watch for you know diving and as professional divers so it was designed much more of as a rugged tool whereas the GMT master was designed for pilots so in a much less demanding environment of seeing a cockpit it's much more relaxing you're not kind of moving around too much the watch is not going to be susceptible as much as the Samara is too damaged you know the pressure obviously water pressure wasn't such an issue so it was designed for a very different environment a cockpit versus the ocean depth so for that reason if they could afford to put a slightly more special bracelet on that watch the Jubilee bracelet definitely is more delicate much more of a dressier smarter look than the Submariner bracelet so or the oyster bracelet so in that respect I really appreciate that products has brought back that Jubilee bracelet and kind of brought back the essence and the real meaning behind the GMT so moving on now to the case the case is almost identical to a Submariner case and it's the same as all the other GMT master cases very simple super case style and iconic Rolex look this case and the fantastic thing about this case is even though it's 40 mil which some people would regard as too small it does really suit a massive range of risks I'd say from 13 centimeter circumference all the way up to 20 centimeter circumference and of course everything in between and maybe a little bit either end as well this case size really suits a huge range of risks its credit erotics for creating something like that that both encompass of slightly smaller case size at 14 or more classic case size at 40 mm but also with kind of bulkier dimensions that help it to suit a larger wrist moving out onto the bezel which is probably our biggest difference between these two watches the Batman which is the DLNR features a black and blue bezel and our Pepsi which is the be LRO features a red and blue bezel really cool looking for the complete different looks from either watch I'd say possibly that the black and blue there's also the DLNR the batman slightly works a little bit better because the top half of the bezel is black which ties in much better to the black dial in my opinion and the fact that you just have the blue hand and the blue bezel kind of helps that it's just that pop of color on the on the watch and everything else is the same color whereas only Pepsi you've kind of got three colors going against each other doesn't quite have the same effect you know obviously you got your red hand and your red bottom off the bezel but you've also got blue and black in there and so don't think it ties in quite as well and doesn't quite have the same aesthetic feel that the Batman does but either way they both work really well onto the dial they both feature the exact same dial with the black black base of the dial and these big white maxi markers really easy very very legible watch and the main real difference on the two dials is that we feature a blue 24-hour hand on our Batman or BL n R and on our blrrr Pepsi features a red 24-hour hand okay so let's quickly have a look at how to set the GMT function of both of these watches so we pull out our crown now to the end stop and we adjust our time and turn our GMT hand round now to 2:00 p.m. and we're just referencing that on the actual bezel itself so it says 14 and that's 2 p.m. and that is our GMT time now as we film this video the GMT time is 2 o'clock 2 p.m. now we push the crown in one stop and adjust just our our hand and we move that round to the local time which is in London now which is British summer time which is +1 GMT so plus 1 hour ahead of GMT so that is set now to 3:00 p.m. now that's our time set on the watch and we can now play with the bezel and set some different time zones and so we're imagining now that we're pilot departing from London so we've got our London time set on the on the dial with our hour hand so the actual dial is displaying our London time but let's say we're now flying to New York we can now rotate our bezel clockwise for positions because New York is minus four hours GMT and so we rotate it for hours clockwise now we can see that the time in New York is 10:00 a.m. so we can read that off our bezel there says 10:00 at the GMT hand and at the same time we can still see our time in London as well which is really cool now we've reset our bezel and we use another example now say we're pilot flying to Japan Tokyo which is plus 9 hours at GMT ahead of GMT so now all we need to do is rotate our bezel anti-clockwise 9 positions round so now that will show a time in Japan of 11 p.m. so 2,300 so it's a really really easy useful way to be able to display time a really nice visual way to display time in different time zones and you can imagine that it being a really useful feature for pilots back in the 50s to be able to use this function yes nowadays we've got the luxury of using phones with world time clocks on them and yes the maths that we're doing here on these bezels is very very basic maths plussing and my nursing you know hours it's a really easy thing to do and you can do in your head and lots of people say what is the point in these watches well it's just a nice visual feature and an easy way for you to display two different time zones yes you could just use your phone but that defeats the object of having a watch in the first place so this watch is really useful for those that travel quite a lot in their in their job and also for those that make international phone calls quite a lot you know we have clients that work here in London but also have offices in New York so they actually use their GMT masters to be able to know what the time is before they make a call to New York or send an email they want to know roughly if they're going to get our answer that time or not okay so now on to which of these watches would I own it's quite a difficult decision because I like each one in their own way probably the one that I would lean more towards is the Pepsi for a couple reasons that I love the fact that they really it is so true to the original six 540 reference from the 1950s featuring that jubilee bracelet and our Pepsi bezel and for that reason I really really like that and I really respect that Ronix has done that I like the color combination of the blue softer tone of blue with the red is a really really nice common color combination and yeah I just think if you're buying a GMT master in steel I think that's kind of the ultimate variation of it my only thing that I'd say that puts me slightly towards the Batman is the fact like I said before though I find aesthetically it works slightly better just to have the only color on that whole watch being the blue just half of the bezel blue and that small hand at the 24 hour hand on the dial being blue as well I think aesthetically though it just works better because cleaner the colours aren't fighting against each other because you've got the black the blue and the red all on the on the Pepsi doesn't quite sit as well with me when I look at it however I find the Batman every time I look at it in a way it reminds me of watch this just wearing the wrong trousers you know that jubilee bracelet hasn't quite set in for me yet I see that watch really with the oyster bracelet I'm sure over time I'll get used to this Jubilee bracelet but for now it kind of feels like it's wearing the wrong trousers but yeah but for me personally these two watches are maybe a tiny bit too loud and a little bit blingy with these bracelets but the great thing about these bracelets is they are arguably a bit more versatile than the standard oyster bracelet because they are slightly more dressy and slightly more a special occasion watch you can definitely wear them with a suit even more easily than you can with the oyster bracelet the oyster bracelet is quite a casual sporty looking watch whereas this one has a much more of a dressy feel and I think that's why Ronix created that Jubilee bracelet back in the 50s for those pilots to wear because they were wearing smarter uniforms it worked much better with their overall look whereas the divers that were wearing the samanas were just wearing them with the wetsuit so it wasn't necessarily important for them to look good and smart and presentable whereas the GMT masters have that much more dressy feel they've always featured that polished center link on the steel various variations whereas the Samoan Savoy featured brushed so it really depends on your personal preference you know personally for me a little bit too loud if I was to put them on strap then that's a different story but then you're losing the essence of the GMT must-have being on that Jubilee bracelet personally I would go for the Pepsi because I appreciate its history in the fact that Rolex is bringing back an old classic the original reference six five four two in you know a modern-day case with all the modern day technologies like ceramic bezels and 70 hour power reserves
