[Music] this is [Music] let's talk about a divisive watch brand and a divisive model one of the most sought after stainless steel models in the world this is the gmt master ii the one two six seven ten blro i'd like to thank my friend john for allowing me some time with his personal pepsi gmt master ii this has been a real treasure uh to have the opportunity to film and share with you guys here on the channel now a couple things half of you that consume my content that watch my videos you love rolex you own rolex you wear rolex you enjoy consuming rolex content and then the other half of you that watch my videos you don't love rolex in some cases you don't own rolex you don't wear rolex you don't particularly enjoy hearing about rolex or consuming rolex content and so i recognize my my viewers are fairly split on this topic and that's why i refer to this as a divisive watch and a divisive brand let me tell you guys exactly where i stand i am a fan of rolex i do respect rolex i do own rolex and i do wear rolex but at the same time i consider myself a rolex realist here so i can call out the negative elements i don't think these are made by angels in heaven i do see the quality control issues from time to time and let me point one out right now if we go in on the dial on a macro level and take a look at the finish work on these applied white gold markers you guys can see some imperfections and it's especially apparent on the 12 o'clock triangular marker if you look at the side here the side wall and even reflected in the enamel dial you guys can see it's got some vertical striping there like it was pressed out very quickly and it wasn't finished particularly well and i know there are other brands out there let's say grand seiko or omega that have lovely detail work on a macro level you can find those watches under retail in some instances i recognize rolex is not a value proposition brand it's not the best watch technically that you can buy when it comes to specifications for its given price but i will say for a mass produced watch this is i think this is the best mass-produced brand out there and there's a reason why there's such crazy demand it's not just rolex making less or limiting supply there are tangible reasons for why this is such a great piece why this is a symbol of luxury of wealth and of success so guys i enjoy rolex i might be a little bit biased but i like to think that i'm fair i can call out the bad i can talk about the details and so let's proceed and i'll try to keep that in mind that half of you you love this watch you would wear this watch and the other half of you watching you know what you couldn't care less about this watch and uh even given the opportunity to buy one you may not even want to add one to the collection so let's start with the diameter here 40.1 millimeters so it's it's a pretty good size and i've always thought that the maxi case wears a bit larger than its stated dimension but not overly large or chunky or clunky it has a thin 12 millimeter height and a 48 millimeter lug to lug length with a dramatic taper on the jubilee bracelet 20 millimeters of the lugs going down to 15.5 where the clasp connects the two portions of the bracelet together we have 100 meters of water resistance with a screw-down crown and a trip lock system meaning that there are three different gaskets within the crown assembly so very good when it comes to water resistance and that's the thing with rolex is they make very practical pieces you know you can take them in water you don't have to worry about magnetic fields or shocks or temperature swings they're very robust very reliable sport pieces and i've got to say they look beautiful i look at this in natural light and i see the ceramic bezel insert the jubilee bracelet the enamel dial the white gold markers and it looks really sharp so it has the presence it has the light play but it also has the comfort and if i compare this gmt master 2 with my submariner i will say i prefer the gmt master 2 when it comes to fit and when it comes to the style of the bracelet the thinner profile the way the case back is is just flatter so it sits nicer on wrist it makes a difference it's a little bit more elegant and i enjoy that when it comes to the bracelet the jubilee bracelet which most people associate with the datejust it hides wear and tear a little bit better than the oyster style links on my hulk and so again i think that's a practical thing the jubilee is one of the most comfortable and beautiful bracelets on the market it has a bit more flex and play to it uh when you compare it to a president or an oyster bracelet but man it's really really nice and i do like the fact that this does carry an easy link extension system to where you can add five millimeters of travel on the fly which i have done here and even then with easy link engaged it's a little bit too tight for my 7.25 inch wrists john has a little bit smaller wrist than i do but i like that easy link when it comes to the submariner the clasp is more substantial and that's not necessarily my favorite thing but i do enjoy the glidelock system better than the easylink system on the gmt master ii the glidelock just offers you a little bit more flexibility in the travel and i think that's a good thing now before i get too far into this let me be quiet and i will sample the tactile action of the bezel the winding action of the crown and also the feel of the clasp in the easylink extension system as you guys can hear it is very precise and satisfying and that's one of the things about rolex this is one of the reasons why i say this is the best mass-produced brand out there it's not the best watt per se for the money but it's just so satisfying when it comes to these these little elements that you interact with as a watch fan it makes it easier to form that emotional connection to your watch that defies the logical you know the bezel action on my sub is is the best that i've tried from any brand at any price and so i mean these are these are some of the things that you will get with the rolex you won't get to the same degree with another awesome brand say omega or say zenith or say grand seiko now let's talk about the movement this is the latest and greatest true gmt caliber from rolex this is the 3285 movement so we have 70 hours of power reserve 28 800 beats per hour or four hertz and then the movement carries 31 joules this will have a free sprung balance set in a full balanced bridge we have paraflex shock absorbers we have a blue parachrom hairspring we have the kron energy escapement system which has improved efficiency over the previous 3186 caliber that i had in my ln uh to the tune of 15 now that escapement is fashioned out of a nickel phosphorus alloy so it will be completely anti-magnetic same with the blue parachrom hairspring this is a true gmt movement the hour hand is independently adjustable you know without hacking the balance and i think that is very handy it's my favorite personal complication on a watch so this is a certified chronometer it is certified by this by the cosc and then rolex also does some additional regulations so it's going to be a little bit tighter than cosd specifications when it comes to acceptable daily deviation and that window is minus two seconds to plus two seconds per day now again in experience here with wearing rolex i found this to be the most consistent brand when it comes to accuracy i just can't shake my submariner it doesn't matter how much i wear this watch or how infrequently i wear this watch or what position i let it rest in or if i put it in a winder where if i have a full power reserve in the movement or if it's operating on its last few hours it is just consistently near spot on it does great with shocks with temperature variance again it's anti-magnetic and that is what you want in a good mechanical movement to be able to go a decade without needing to service the movement and in the meantime not have to worry about the accuracy or the activities that you're doing they're not beautiful movements honestly you look at the architecture and it's fairly clunky and ugly you look at the finish not particularly enticing and so you know there's a reason why rolex rarely does a display case back they don't think you should be looking at what is just a workhorse of a movement and not something that is uh aesthetically beautiful to look at so i think that's the draw with rolex is the reliability the accuracy and the fact that it's just so steady and constant if you service these every decade it will outlast you it will outlast your posterity you know the next generation they're just built to last they're really well engineered when it comes to this 3285 there were 10 separate patents that were filed during the development of the caliber and so i think that's really interesting and i look forward to seeing what they do in the future you know what is the 33-85 going to be like in however many decades from now or years from now i'm impressed with what they're doing here when it comes to the tech the movement even though again you can find a watch that carries a beautiful display back that has you know meta certification or fantastic finish work or a higher power reserve there i'm not saying that this is the only movement to have i'm just trying to point out the appeal and the draw of what's in a rolex case here so anyways guys just in closing i love the movement i love the design i love the comfort i love the light play i love the history i think the enamel dial is lovely i like the color play the high contrast i like the good chromalight loom i think this is very strong but let's talk about the not so good or the elements for improvement i think rolex should pay more attention to those details on the dial you know i want consistent finish work on the applied white gold markers i don't want to have to see the imperfections here on a macro level even though only a crazy watch idiot savant would actually you know notice these things and take out a macro lens or a jeweler's loop you know i want the beauty and the small details because that adds a little bit to the overall package the other thing and this might be personal preference but i would like to see anti-reflective treatment found all throughout the sapphire crystal and not just on the cyclops magnifier i think the watch would improve from enhanced clarity now i will say there is a distinction between no anti-reflective treatment on a rolex and no anti-reflective treatment on say in oris or a hamilton or a zelos in those instances you see very crisp defined reflections that become distracting and really take away from the overall model and with a rolex or with the tutor the reflections are enlarged and they're a little bit more opaque so you're seeing some light play but you're not being distracted when it comes to telling the time at a glance and so i think it could be improved but for whatever reason rolex just you know they've made the decision not to use anti-reflective treatment on their crystals now the last thing this is the mo probably most divisive point and that is the availability and the resale value and i think this is really what divides people here so let me share with you my opinion retail price is thousand seven hundred dollars and considering that you know you look at the technology you look at the movement you look at the details you look at the finish work you look at the bracelet you look at everything and that is in line with what rolex charges and i think it is a solid watch and i would buy this at 9 700 absolutely i would but here's the thing it's so hard to get it really is hard to get and so if i were to ask my authorized dealer for this watch i would estimate that maybe within two years i could have a shot a legitimate shot at purchasing this watch but that requires a lot of patience on my part and that turns away a lot of people that go you know what i've got 10 000 in the bank right now i my money is good enough why can't i get this watch and it is a big turn off and it does take people watch enthusiasts that have the money and it points them toward grand seiko or toward omega or breitling or panerai or zenith or whatever the brand awesome brands out there outside of rolex jlc you know there's some great stuff cartier man i could go on and on so there are people that are turned away by the the crazy wait lists the hard-to-get nature of the design but isn't that the definition of true luxury having the ability to purchase isn't the deciding factor on whether or not you can purchase it so it is really a luxury item love that or hate that this is a status symbol of wealth and success this is the most recognized watch brand and arguably the most respected watch brand in the world when we're not taking into account the watch enthusiast community so i get that there's a catch-22 with it so for me i would sacrifice some of that equity and that value retention or appreciation if it meant having better availability that's that's a swap that i would make because i do think this is a really solid model i do think that this is a great daily driver is it perfect no is it mass-produced yes are there other watches out there that are maybe better in areas absolutely but i think as an overall package this is really really good and hard to say no to so i would i would make that that a sacrifice personally you know i would give up that 10 000 equity that i get in my pocket as soon as i walk out of the authorized dealer i would give up that if it would mean hey you know next month i could go to the a.d put down that 9700 and walk out with an excellent pepsi on wrist to enjoy next to my hulk and next to my other watches so guys i think that concludes the video the presentation on the pepsi the cosmopolitan watch from rolex the gmt master ii the one two six seven ten b-l-r-o let me know if you have any specific questions i really appreciate you taking the time to watch today guys and i'll see you real soon you
