all right Jeff Zimmerman with esteemed famed one of the best trainers in the whole world Robert Garcia future Hall of Famer man I don't know if people talk about you like that enough if they are because you've been one of the best in since I've been covering the sport 15 20 years but um how you doing Robert doing great you know you got to got to set up yourself with a good team good Fighters you know treat everybody well and uh you know your your name will be out there but you know I'm still working I'm not done yet I still got a lot more to do yeah this this isn't a retirement interview by any means but I don't want to retire yet I to have a few years left no so yeah you know we got to continue doing it yeah I would see you out here in your home away from home in Dallas Fort Worth um coming out I know you got some stuff going on in San Antonio but it's been a while so I'm I'm thankful to catch up with you yeah definitely you know anywhere in Texas I always have fun you know Texas has always been being great to us doesn't matter where in Texas the the fans are are are special you know when it comes to to the love of the sport uh the love for the for the boxers for us as trainers the family just just the fact that my dad myself Mikey my son everybody's involved you know we get a lot of love from from everybody in Texas you know it's it's it's different different the way the way it is in any other state Texas is special yeah yeah it it is and you know I think you remember I'm from California originally but been here 24 years and I'm not moving back so but listen before we get going and get into this um little fight over this past weekend and everything else you have going on um I was at Fernando vargas's gym a few months ago in Vegas and of course I had to asked him about you your dad and Mikey and for about 20 minutes he just talked about your family and the love and sharing a room with you and just you know just what you did for him you know just you know and to see see Fernando now with his own kids what does that mean to to you guys your family and especially your dad well you know what he he always says that if it wasn't for my dad he wouldn't have been around or or Alive because you know growing up he grew up pretty rough you know uh family issues uh without a a father and stuff like that running around the streets uh and then when my dad uh when my dad picked him up you know on his way to the gym when he was walking or running to the gym one day my dad's like look at those kids man they they're you know they're always we see them walking every day uh and my dad told him you know hey you know what where do you guys live you know so they actually lived not very far from where we lived in auar so my dad started u giving them rides to to the gym it was him and his younger brother and uh and everything started there you know Fernando Fernando became like another one of the family you know he he had personal problems with his at home with his mom stepdad and stuff like that so he would come you know he would come over to my dad's house uh quite often you know I got kicked out can I stay here so my dad would let him stay in the house you know spend months at a time you know uh sleeping in in in in a in a person or one person bed you know me and him would sleep together we were young you know we were we were still young so you know we were like kids but yeah we we slept together in the same bed for for for a while you know and uh shared the same clothes because when Fernando would come over to our house he had nothing with him nothing at all so he would you borrow my clothes to School uh and stuff like that you know and uh you that's the way we grew up you know and that's why he he has a lot of love for my dad the whole family we have the same thing for him you know now that he's doing that with his kids it's it's it's great you know because his kids are doing great uh he's he's guiding them the way the way my dad was doing that with us so you know I I think he learned a lot from my dad and and still until this day any little problem any little thing that he that he has to uh talk to somebody it's my dad that he calls it's so awesome I mean it really is and just and knowing what he's gone through and and then hearing him just just talk about the family and and your dad and and and then to see it I interviewed two of his kids that day too and just the love they have for for Fernando you know it's it's such a great story but um he great you know I think he's got a great story I think something big is coming for Fernando he told me uh that something big is going to come for a good a good story on on on one of the big platforms so people people are going to be excited it's going to be a really good one well we'll look out for it for sure we'll we'll we'll definitely see it um but listen Robert you've been you've been in the biggest fights against some of the best to ever do it um you know as a fighter and a trainer people forget you were a world champion fighter I think but um break down the fight we just saw this weekend um all the buildup all the craziness um you know two different camps you know one completely all business and the other one was you know a little bit Looney Tunes um break it down for me it was unbelievable man that that's that's that's the first word that come to my mind unbelievable because nobody and and and and I mean nobody I'm pretty sure even people close to Ryan people around him uh were probably questioning you you know how how is the fight going to end does Ryan even have a chance because you know we could all say he fooled us you know because we all thought oh he's he's definitely not not ready to step into the ring he needs help because all all the things that were going on on social media and and and everything that he was saying you know that he was drinking getting high smoking all that I I truly believe he he was going out he was having a few drinks I I believe he was smoking uh he's just one of those guys that has that special that gifted power and speed that that that that got him through this fight uh you know I'm very happy for him for his dad his family I know them growing up in in Southern California through the amateurs Ryan has said it himself you know going to amateur tournaments where they didn't have money to to rent a room in a hotel and they had to stay in the car uh during the tournament that's not easy that that's that's that's doing it the hard way and and and and going through that and and seeing seeing them get to where they're at right now you know it it makes me very happy especially knowing that he's you know Mexican-American from Southern California you know I I I I love the I I love what he did in the ring you know it was it was unbelievable but I'm one of those that didn't think he was going to perform the way he did you know just because of what we were seeing on social media and uh and all that you know uh and Haney the total the total the complete opposite he dedicated focused training hard I'm sure he had great Camp great sparring uh the perfect training camp and then you have somebody that's out there partying drinking having fun maybe not even showing up to the gym showing showing up once in a while with with Derek James but they go in there and he went in there and and took care of business you know uh one of the one of the few that could get away with it I think you know mayora was kind of like one of them uh back in the 70s or 80s uh you know I never seen him fight but my dad always talking about buas olivarez rben olivarez that they said they used to get him out of the the bars to go fight you know because he was an alcoholic so you know if if Ryan did have fun drink dream camp and everything he's he's one of the only ones that could get away with that you know because he's just got that gifted uh speed and power that that's going to get him that's that that you know he gets he gets away with that you know I don't think that's something that anybody else could do it's just Ryan right and and as a trainer like yourself you know you know you don't want something like that to catch on with other Fighters right this is a this is a complete oneoff yeah you definitely don't want don't want that to to to go to any other the fighters because now Fighters might think well if Brian does it if Brian gets away with it I think I could do the same thing I think I could go out I think I could drink and that's not for everybody you know you know Ryan is gifted with that speed and power you know he's that timing he has on that left hook is just unbelievable I don't think I don't think there's anybody that could actually prepare for it there's things that you could do and maybe try to avoid or block it but it's not going to be easy uh that shouldn't you know trainers should not want other fighters to pick up those those habits I think Ryan's the only one that could get away with it uh definitely wouldn't want any of my Fighters doing stuff like that you know very similar you know Brandon R was was a little bit of a a wild kit also uh but never to that never never to that you know case where where where we had to you know stop him from drinking or anything like that you know he used to have fun and anything but during Camp you know he he was dedicated you know there was a few fights early in his career where couple weeks before the fight he was still out there partying and and drinking but it you know it didn't happen when he became a champion or anything he he was you know he he focused and dedicated himself when when he was Champion but Ryan is just like I said just something you know somebody special yeah that's such great perspective too and just to hear knowing him seeing him grow up and of course you know the money he's made you know not not even in the ring but outside the ring I'm sure sure it just it's just different levels for someone like Ryan having all that money so young wow you know it's it's it's unbelievable like I said you know just for him his his family growing up you know broke you know with not enough money to travel and stuff like that having to sleep in the car you know that's a great story you know uh you know I think he's he's he's he's earned everything he's he has and everything he's made through social media through boxing you know and and he's so young he's so talented he's he he gets the attention of millions of millions of people he's worldwide known so there's always you know somebody that young is always going to get a lot of a lot of attention especially from females from girls you know that are gonna want to be part of him D so you know how could you say no to so much of that you know how could you you know especially being young he's a great looking kid you know so man it's not easy you know it's not easy for him but uh you know I'm I'm pretty sure he's also his his parents his his team around him are also going to to make sure he puts his money away make sure he invest right and and and and secure himself for the rest of his life let me ask you Robert because you would know this as well as anybody I talked to his dad they had a Dallas media day here in Dallas at at Derek's gym and I asked his dad you don't become a 15-time national amateur Champion unless you can box right and Spence Spence kind of had that same you know thing around him before he fought Mikey there was a lot of people saying that you know they thought Mikey would outbox him at least 50% of the people a lot of you know you know distinguished you know boxing people and you know Spence was an Olympian so I mean can you just clear that up for people if you do that well in the amateurs you you got to be able to box you're not knocking out everybody you know what you you you you all that experience in the amateurs and and all those National TS do help obviously but it's I I I see I see the amateurs to the pros as two totally different sports you know we've also seen and I've had in my gym and i' I've worked with with with amateurs that that were Sensational unbelievable never get beat winning every National but then in the pros for one or the other reason they just don't don't make it are not able to perform and even though there's other cases where discipline you know dedication stuff like that gets involved well then that's obviously a bigger part of it but guys that that that won everything that everybody was after you know from the amateurs and then when it comes to tring Pro they're still dedicated they're still focused they still give it 100% in the gym and they just can't can't can't make it uh there's there's Fighters that that could be fighting you know 10 12 professional fights and you still can't jump from four to six rounds because they're not ready even though they had 300 amateur fights you know and then but then you have the ones that that that didn't have that much am experience and become world champions you know it's it's just I think this totally two different sports you know uh there's there's Olympians medalists that never become Champions which where if if I'm thinking it's the same sport any any Olympian gold medalist silver bronze medalist you're already fighting the best in the world you're fighting the best in every country so why wouldn't you be able to become a world champion uh and it doesn't happen you know all the time very few make it so I I think it's two different sports interesting and and to your point his dad brought up Luke Campbell who was a gold medalist that Ryan knocked out so um there's a perfect that's a perfect example there you know that's the way I see it you know uh I think it's just it's just like I said different sport you know different punches different you know uh in the amateurs they don't count uh body shots that much uh and in the pros body shots are a big factor when when you go to the body good you know you know how to work the body you know solid punches and amatees that count a lot of points uh where in the pros one punch could change the fight around you know so it's it's totally different I I just I just think in the amateurs all my Fighters all my amateur program that I have and all the kids that I that I'm preparing I'm not preparing them to become amateur Superstars I want them I'm preparing them to become professional fighters I'm teaching them the professional style I'm making my amate spark with my professional fighters because they need to be professionals uh you could be an Olympian you could be a gold medalist and yes you're going to get a way bigger contract you're gonna get a way better uh minimums and everything but in the at the end of the day they all want to become world champions once you become world champion then you then then obviously the pures and everything is going to be big so you know I prefer my fighters to be professional fighters interesting that's interesting um were you surprised you know Devin Haney and his dad they've done it their own way throughout his career and it's worked up until this Saturday night um hiring different trainers you know signing with different promoters kind of doing these three four fight deals um I I talked to Richard Steele on Sunday morning he called me and he said to me why wasn't there a worldclass trainer in his corner you know this was you know bill was the lead trainer were you surprised when you saw that that he didn't have a Ben Davidson someone like you in the biggest fight of his career well I was surprised because like you just said they've done so well you know from the beginning never signed them to any big promoter fought him so many times in Tijuana uh every did everything on his own did everything their way when they become big stars Champions they're still they haven't signed to a top promoter for a long time they signed fight by fight maybe two or three fights at a time so they've done it their way and they and they did well they did well but comes a day where you're gonna need to do something about it you're gonna need the help and I think that I think now Bill Haney and and de anyy should realize that the time has come they need to bring somebody into their Camp then and and and I'm not thinking and I'm not saying they need to bring somebody into their Camp I think they need to join another camp because bringing somebody to their Camp it's still going to be their way it's still going to be their their rules it's going to be the way they want they they've been doing it and I'm not saying they've done a bad job because you know the kid became Undisputed the kid is a a two Division World Champion the kid you know was pound-for-pound on the top 10 list I'm not saying they've done things wrong but the time did come where they need to join another somebody else another team where they're not going to be the main stars where they're not going to be the the full attention in their gym wherever they do their camps and if they bring somebody in he's still G to be the star he's still gonna be the main guy he's still gonna call the shots I think he needs to go to a camp where he's gonna get Fighters that want to kick his ass that that are not there that are not hired to spar with him that are there in that gym and you you're coming to my gym we're going to keep your ass and that's what he needs that the type of that's the type of mentality he needs now to be in a place where he's where he's not that comfortable he you know I think I think it's time now they've done so good up until this last Saturday now it's it's time for him to to find something else with all dues to to B Haney you know I don't want I don't want him to to feel offended or or feel like I'm I'm trying to to say he's not good he's done a great job you look his son pound-for-pound one of the one of the best fighters in the world Undisputed uh two Division champion he's done a great job business-wise and in the gym but uh I do believe when it comes to the gym when it comes to training it wouldn't be a bad idea for him to join a team where he's gonna get all that work interesting and and just we won't we won't dwell on the fight much longer Robert but what could have Devin done differently just from watching it everyone knows the left hook is coming that's that's the money punch from Ryan yet he just he kept getting hit by it he had no it seemed like he had no answers I think I think it was just the the first round that that first left hook that Ryan landed I think changed everything around even you know we're talking about Devin which it I'm pretty sure he felt it and you know Ryan has that special that spe that gifted LIF hook speed and power and you know accuracy you know he that's that's his gifted Talent uh when when when Devin when when when Deon got hit with it he didn't expect it and he didn't expect it to be that that fast and strong I think that changed everything around for de and I think and I also think it changed everything around for for Ryan I think if if if five six rounds would have gone by and and and Ryan never landed anything hard anything solid I think it would have been a total different fight I think it would have been all Haney and and Haney would have probably stopped him later the rounds uh I think it was it was it was it was that first left hook that Ryan landed that gave him that confidence knowing that he could that Haney wasn't going to be able to take his punch that's why he was confident and that's why he did it over and over and dropped him three times you know and that also changed Haney's mentality man that's didn't didn't figure out what to do uh you know when when you're winning and winning and winning that happened to Derek James you know with with with with all his young Fighters winning winning always winning always winning and then comes the fight against against Crawford and it kind of seemed like he kind of got a little a little confused like but now that learn that that taught him so much that that's gonna make him better so I think that's going to be the same situation with with uh with Haney and his and Bill Bill Haney had never gone through that you know his son's always winning winning winning he doesn't train anybody else he's never experienced a tough lost he's never experienced anything like that so this should teach him a lot yeah that's great perspective this is why I wanted to talk to you Robert because you bring so much perspective because you've been in those fights
