(music) It still sounds kind of crazy when people are like-- call me the "Fittest on Earth," or the champ. I don't think I ever needed to settle in. I don't want to ever walk into the gym and just be like, "I am the champ." We are cooking breakfast. I'm in Boston staying with the Bergerons. Four eggs, half-avocado, bell pepper, coffee and cream, and water. Um, she'll set the fire alarm off. She's done that plenty of times. And the fire alarm went off how many times that time? So, it's a lively household, so it's fun in the mornings. Bode and Harley, the littlest kids, are there. She looks so focused. (laughing) So we plan every morning on leaving at 8 o'clock. But we have to be driving out of the driveway by 8:10. Are you not buckled? Okay, it's not over your shoulder. I can see it. Unbelievable. When I snapchat I snapchat a lot, so let's say if I start the day that I kind of like making a good story. (singing) Yeah, snapchat number two. You know that slowly but surely, I have become a Belieber? Why do you feel so weird considering yourself the Fittest Man on Earth? I'm just a regular old simple guy. I'm not extraordinary in any way. I don't like to brag. At all. I don't like to talk about myself or brag about anything. It's just not me. That's actually a really good show, "Breaking Bad." I know what happens. He was just always so good in the whole series. Walter?
Yeah. How do we do that? Just kind of make up movements that we want to do for the day, and put them together. Yeah, Mondays normall get a little ambitious and you kind of get beat up by the rest of the week, and by Thursday, Friday, you're kind of like, "Aw, I don't want to do that. I don't want to do that." I can't plan out what I want to do. I just can't do it. I've tried before in the past, and it's just like, I'll wake up one day, and I'm like I have this plan. I don't want to do that, so I don't do it. Let's do something else. So we'll change it up. So it's been like a year now that I've been working really closely with Ben Bergeron, who's my coach. And we have Katrin Davidsdottir. 1-2-3. Hey, Katrin. And this is Ian. Ian's here to film us because he found out that we are the best looking gym in America. Fitness? 'Bout time. (singing) "Baby, but here's my number, so call me maybe." 12 minutes on this, and I'm already nervous. There's a little bit of country on the playlist. You just gotta be gentle. (indecipherable) Bench press maybe. Meathead Monday, right? That's what counts, right? Immediately: "How good did I look?" What do you think? Her knee sleeves--
Yeah? They smell really badly? Oh my god. So bad. Come here. Smell them. Smell them. Smell. No dude. That actually smells like Doritos, kind of. I like--I'll be honest with you, mine smell like that. They smell like Cool Ranch Doritos. What?
Yeah. Get Jeff to smell them. Did you roll that all the way out here so you could sit on it? We're on our way to something. Hopefully you can record it. We don't know yet. But it'll be cool. Something--it's something new. Some new recovery thing, hopefully. So we're gonna get a scan? Is that what it's called? So what happens is, I place the pads on your back, and then we're going to send a neurological signal into the body. Ow ow ow ow ow ow. Ow ow ow. Ow ow ow ow. Oh no. The other side. Okay. I'm never coming back. What did you say? Right on the money. Eeee! That was a bad one. Alright. I'm going to Water. I've had the pleasure of knowing Katrin, living with Katrin for awhile, and a couple years ago, one of the other coaches, Jeff, we just started scaring each other all the time. So pretty much whenever anyone would start in at the gym, whether it was a coach or a new kind of competitive member or athlete, we would just kind of scare them, and with Katrin it just stuck. Ah!
(screams) Ah.
(screams) Wah.
(screams) Yah.
(screams) I could easily be in her peripheral vision, and just turn and give her a little surprise like that, and it tends to work really well. I'm not lying. I'm a little bit traumatized. For real. Ah!
(screams) Oh my god. Maybe, yeah, but I think I'm going to get-- I think I'm gonna be like-- I can't even tell you. Maybe I'll think about it when I'm a couple of years older. But I feel like I'm hitting a good point where I feel pretty good, you know, all the time. Yeah, because you're the champ. (laughs) No, not because of that. Physically, physically. Ben, where's your fridge? I know. We haven't got one yet. We'll get one. I don't know where I'm gonna put it though. Probably right there. Well you got called skinny, didn't you? Yeah. Scrawy. That's even worse.
I got called scrawny by Daymond John, the guy from Shark Tank. I said, "Wow. Thank you very much." I didn't know what else to say. Yeah, I struggle with the balance between coaching and being a full-time athlete, because I really do love both of them so much, like, if I wasn't a full-time athlete, I would be a full-time coach. I am a full-time athlete right now, so I can't dedicate my time to coaching, and my passion is really helping people improve and reach their goals, whatever it is in the gym. I love doing that and it's very frustrating at times because I can't do both. I just don't have enough time to dedicate to it in a day. Like, if you want to be the best, you have to train like it's a full-time job, and it's--it's ridiculous. Yeah. Of course, like, next season is already in my mind just because it's getting so close, and every year, it just goes by so fast. The Open's over and suddenly it's almost regionals, and regionals over, and hopefully, the Games. It's just like, it goes by so fast every year. So I really try and use everyday to its fullest. I never want to look back and feel like I didn't use a day. I want to maximize the effort that I put into every day so I know when I go to bed that that was all that I had, and when it comes game time, that I am as prepared as I possibly could be. So it's really, from when I get up in the morning, I think about what I'm doing for the day. I work until I get completely exhausted at the end of the day, and then you just recharge and do it over again. I'm really working out all day, so I can't even put a number on how much I'm working out more than somebody else. I just train until I can't anymore. You gotta train like you're in second. You gotta train like you really want to make the Games. You gotta train like you have everything to lose. It really just solidifies what I believe about working hard to reach your goals. That was my goal, that's what I wanted to do, that's what I wanted to be. You gotta give everything everyday. I don't want to feel like I'm the best because I feel like I could settle for that, and I don't want to do that. I want to keep going, and I want to keep getting better and become the best that I can be. I'm not the greatest athlete in the world. I'm not the most physically gifted at all by any means. You just gotta work hard. That's what I've always thought and believed, and just being able to go out and prove it, it means a lot to me. Announcer: Ben Smith!
It's no wonder HQ seems to overlook Ben Smith. He seems so down-to-earth and unassuming without a hint of arrogance. He doesn't plan his training, he just floats from one WOD to another.
This was up a couple of days ago but I didn't see it shared here. Nice to see Ben getting some spotlight.
Katrin is really pretty. Are they all like that in Iceland?
Ben seems like a really ordinary dude. Even his name is incredibly ordinary. lol. But it is good to see him get some publicity, even if he apparently has no desire for it.
Early prediction: Both champs finish second this year.
I appreciated Dottir's humility in that she still says, 'and hopefully the games'.
Like there a number of athletes who believe the games are a sure shot and they have a right to be there rather than understanding they need to earn it.
So even Crossfit doesn't understand the difference between hip and back extensions.
I impressed by the amount of workouts Ben did in a single day, but more impressed that he could come up with that many workouts in his head everyday and not repeat himself
