Riptide - Vance Joy // Ukulele Chucking Tutorial

Aloha everyone today we have a tutorial for Riptide by Vance joy so it's a holiday weekend here in the States which means lots of barbecuing and lots of jamming and Riptide is an awesome song for a group Jam because it only has four easy chords a minor G C and F and you can play the island strum on the entire song you can go here to the stand by me tutorial to learn the island strum more fully I'm going to show you right here you can just see if you could pick it up right a minor you're gonna go down down up up down up down down up up down up down down up up down if you already know your island strum pretty well you can try a couple of island strum variations that Vance joy has in his original song and I'm going to use them in the playthrough as well so on the verses he drops the first up on the island strum so it sounds like this it goes down down down down down now I'll break it down in more detail after the playthrough on the chorus we're gonna do a chucking island strum so that means you're going to chuck on the down strums after the first one it sounds like this it goes down up down up down up it's more for the make it's really fun so just stay tuned after the playthrough and I'll break down those strums and teach them to you slowly so then you can pick them up and play them faster okay let's play the song here we go one two one two three four I was scared of dentists and I was scared of pretty started the station sorry Oh Oh she's been ready taken away to the dark side I wanna be your name I love you when you sing that song if you wanna if you gonna stick I just gotta I just gotta know I can you me other way I swear she is destined for the square oh I wanna be when you're singing that song I got a lump in my throat take it away to the doctor I wanna be your love when you're singing that song I gotta love my throat cause you're gonna sing the words wrong okay now let's break down those strums a little bit um so the first strum yeah let's play it nice and slow on the a minor it's just getting used to skipping the up strum so the key is you want to keep your arm moving you just want to not touch the strings okay so it'll look like this slow two three four down down down down down okay let's try the core pattern a minor G and C ready a minor two three four that's it you just have to play it slowly and get used to not hitting the up-strum and and then build it up faster to the pace of the song okay on the chuckin islands job if you haven't chucked before what we're essentially doing is scraping the strings so you are strumming right and then you're muting with your palm you're just pushing your palm against the fret board after you do the strong so slow-mo it's like this and then fast it starts timing with this they call it a Chuck because it makes it like a sound right so you can just do with the slow mo way until you find that Chuck so let's do it really slow the chucking islands drum alright what if you break it down on the a minor it sounds like this down chuck up up Chuck up down Chuck Chuck down okay so let's try it on the chord pattern it'll take some getting used to especially if you've never done a Chuck before in that case you know just play the ions from try the Chuck you can you can still definitely have fun with the song without the Chuck okay so let's try the chord pattern a minor G C two three four down major okay so hopefully you can see how these variations make the song a little bit more interesting than just playing the islands from the entire time however you can just jam out and play the islands from the entire time and still have a lot of fun playing the song so take it at the pace that you need and and just enjoy it okay so if you enjoyed this tutorial please subscribe like comment consider becoming a patron on my patreon page and you can support more Google Ailey tutorials happy jamming and I will see you guys next time ciao here comes the Sun do-do-do-do here comes a sudden si it's alright it's been a long little time
