I was so prepared to hate it but it actually sounded pretty cool! Like a battle in Game of Thrones.
Needs more Mahler Hammer.
Why?
Thanks for posting this. I love this kind of thing. When it works and this does. By the way I just realized that the repetition of the end of the basic opening Motif in the first movement foreshadows the repetition of phrase structure of Debussy's La Mer. You can see the bow of the boat rise up and then come back down and then there's always the second coming back down which mirrors the way things are always repeating on the ocean. That's what the Debussy did in La Mer.
Where I'd like to see something like this is at the very end of Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff, when the big full orchestral iteration of the Dies Irae theme is played, I would love it if there was basically a big cloud of fog and then projected right into the fog is kind of demonic character who swirels in a circle, then maybe gestures with a devilish look to the audience and then just disappears as the piece ends with its final quiet notes. What would be great is if if they did it really well and of course there would be no expectation of it.
ELI5 - am I missing a joke? Is this some long-lost performance practice?
EDIT: per u/JembetheMuso, we're hearing a naval battle.
Aaaaarrrgg! Aaaaarrrg!
I heard him conduct Die Walkure in Helsinki in 2011, brilliantly done.
Sounds great! Segerstam is quite the character, especially when you've read a bit about his roots. A real genius you could say, love him or hate him.
It's even funnier when he yells like this during rehearsals, generally pointing at some player/section who did something wrong. It's all fun and games and you can see he's just joking, but sometimes people take it personally and it's not fun anymore..
