so I've been using the Ricoh gr3 diode Edition for almost two months now and I still love it as much as I do since day one however after publishing the first two videos I got quite a bit of comments with big criticisms first and foremost understand this this camera right here isn't gonna be for everyone and I'm not here to push sales for Rico quite frankly I don't think they need it I'm just here to share my passion in photography and the Ricoh gr3 while not technologically spectacular on paper it's actually Moda to fit a unique style photography and everybody's got a different style right it's why we choose one brand over another but when you're coming from something that's probably really really good then of course you'll feel the gr3 is going to be lacking in some aspects so I want to highlight those shortcomings of this camera and how some of those shortcomings are actually advantages in Disguise number one the autofocus is not that good I wouldn't say it's bad it's decent it grabs Focus easily with single point autofocus but of course don't be expecting Sony or Canon level tracking autofocus I had a dad left me a comment saying he's trying to take photos of his kids running around and it just wasn't keeping up so if your intention is to have amazing autofocus to keep up with fast moving subject this unfortunately ain't it most gr3 users recommend using snap distance Focus it's a feature that pre-focuses your camera at a certain distance so whatever subject matter you're photographing as long as they're within that distance they will be in focus and the camera has a little handy bar on the side here that tells you from where to where the focus will be based on the aperture that is set so if you have it at F 2.8 then of course that bar is narrower meaning you have to be on target to get Focus personally I'm still getting used to the whole snap distance shooting style so my focus distance is set to three and a half meter and I would be shooting at f8 during high noon so from three and a half meter to Infinity I know I'm going to be in focus and I've mentioned this in my other videos too this isn't a bokeh specialized camera you can of course pull off decent bokeh at F 2.8 but it's very much a camera that thrives on subject matter and composition so don't be afraid to shoot as high as F-16 moving on battery life sucks yes but that's the compromise for having a small pocketable but a PSE size sensor camera with built-in and the in-body image stabilization and a decent processor for your film simulated photos and when you look at the battery I mean come on come on what do you expect they're small enough to pocket a few more anyways and I don't mind it two usually will last me the day and I love bringing this camera around on my casual days I don't have to think about oh how heavy the cameras weighing me down just to take a few photos you know I used to feel guilty bring a setup like this around and only taking one to two photos and later question myself well what's that was that even worth it and to hit the nail on the head it's photos that I wouldn't even share anyways versus the gr3 if I don't take any photos that day it doesn't matter it's not weighing me down all right time I gotta put a pause right here because I know someone's gonna say something do not get me wrong I still love my Sony stuff on the days where I'm intentionally trying to get the best photos I will plug my gear out some of you might have seen the travel conv series and I go all out I'm more talking about the Casual days with the RICO here where I'm just out relaxing and having fun anyways there is a way to squeeze out a little more juice out of this camera and that is to turn off the display adjacent how would I see what I'm photographing so now this is where we come back to that style shooting that style photography you have to get familiar with the 28 millimeter you have to be one with a 28 millimeter in all seriousness it's very true a lot of videos that I watch about this camera they say they don't even look at their screen and they don't mind not having an electronic viewfinder they just snap at chess level when they see their shot once you're used to it you sort of develop this Instinct this premonition when you know you're at that exact distance to nail your shot and this is where the snap distance Focus come into play as well if you left autofocus on it will likely hunt and not take the photo quick enough or miss his Focus entirely but when it's manual it will click and get the shot that is the freedom of shooting with the RICO gr3 moving on dust problem look thus is inevitable and yes it's hard to clean these types of cameras without having to take it all apart or send it to a professional this does issue does stop people from getting this camera and I get it I'm not here to downplay the situation but the people who do get this camera and are happy with the results that they're getting from the images reportedly don't see dust or at least it's not very prominent in their images with that said if and when I do see a big dust problem I'll report back and and if it's really bad I'll send it in to see what's up so definitely subscribe and stay tuned alright alright that's fine and dandy but film simulation is pointless when you can just edit your photos to get the exact look that you want again true but like I mentioned all of my other EDC videos for these types of cameras at least how I'm personally treating them I don't want to edit I do plenty of that with my Sony's already again with intentions but this camera here this camera is just for fun now don't get me wrong you can definitely use this camera for more serious work as well and I've seen people shoot weddings with this camera and that's the beauty of it it can shoot raw so you can go as hard as you want but the casualness of how this camera can be is what makes it so great film simulation and Recon Fuji are required as some of the best Straight Out of camera jpegs look amazing and I just love finding new recipes I can pop into my camera and just be excited to shoot and that's what photography should be about having that excitement to create something for yourself wow that was an inspirational quote I'm just gonna end it like that let me know in the comments down below if you want more gr3 videos
