system panzer grenadier consists of the infantry fighting vehicle ifv puma and the dismounted soldier system gladius both together shape the networked battlefield of the future currently there are nine battalions of mechanized infantry within the german bundeswehr of these four battalions are equipped with the ifv marder and five battalions with the ifv puma the marda is deployed together with dismounted soldiers without data connection to the vehicle in contrary the puma carries the fully integrated digital soldier system gladius that is introduced into the bundeswehr as infantrist der tsukumft in this film the two systems are compared based on chosen scenarios the marder is a proven asset that has been used by the german army for decades the vehicles are connected to the dismounted soldiers via analog radios providing voice only in addition to reliable mobility and passive protection the marder offers its crew accuracy in weapons usage thanks to its 20 millimeter on-board machine gun but not on the move [Music] in the new system panzer grenadier the puma and the soldiers are connected to each other in all phases of combat via voice and also via a secure data connection thus forming a synchronized unit the puma offers the crew an unprecedented level of protection its unmanned turret with a fully stabilized 30 millimeter main armament enables it to engage targets over long distances even on the move the standoff weapon mix with the integrated mels missile system combined with its high level of mobility give the puma superior assertiveness in all combat situations [Music] commands from the analog world are issued by personal briefings while all soldiers gather at a central location the soldier receiving the commands writes them down while they are being issued the troops are particularly vulnerable at this point all military leaders then pass the commands on to the subordinate soldiers and the cycle of order issuing is repeated down the chain of command to the individual soldiers issuing commands takes a lot of time and the process is vulnerable for errors and for misinterpretation of information [Music] thanks to the new system panzer grenadier it is possible to issue commands regardless of location with the aid of digital technology this means that the soldier receiving the command in the highly protected puma can simultaneously follow the visualized command on the screen the visualization via the battle management system tac net makes it easier to understand the given orders at all levels as the process can be completely digital a significant reduction in time is the result [Music] due to a limited field of view from the interior in some situations it is only practical to guide the modder via the hatch this exposes the commander and makes the commander vulnerable thanks to the puma's modern sensor systems the crew can observe the battlefield on the monitors during day and night while being fully protected inside the vehicle the commander and the gunner can use the turret scopes for the distance while the infantry section in the rear compartment of the vehicle can observe the near surrounding with the 360 vision system threats can thus be detected at an early stage and counter measures can immediately be taken in the puma the new digital driver vision system is available the driver can thus safely steer the puma under armoured protection both a day and at night the state-of-the-art cameras and thermal imaging devices mounted on the puma provide the driver with the best view at all times and make the puma a pioneer in modern driver vision systems [Music] after dismounting from the marder the soldiers find their orientation in the terrain and determine the next course of action with the aid of the map the compass and the personally prepared record of the commands this is different with system panzer grenadier while still mounted on the vehicle all soldiers receive the latest information about the situational awareness on their tablets every soldier is prepared for the place of deployment in due time before leaving the vehicle the tactical map assigned waypoints or sketches can be displayed on the tablets and for use in combat situations also within the head-mounted data displays of the soldiers [Music] the soldier reports the reconnaissance results on an enemy target to the commander of the marder using the coordinates from the paper hand map the commander then compares the coordinates with the own hand map and the view from the hatch into the terrain then the commander assigns the target to the gunner by voice via radio the new system panzer grenadier is different with the modern equipment the soldier is able to automatically transfer reconnaissance results for example with a wireless connected laser target designator to the battle management system features like the precise sharing of target data open up new possibilities in terms of sensor to shooter capabilities in a networked platform environment as an asset with a flexible weapon mix the puma has the ability to engage on distance without delay and even on the move with mels for example the crew has the possibility to act under full protection even against superior tanks and bunkers up to a distance of 4 000 meters the puma carries also the state-of-the-art mus missile defense system and reactive armor this protection against anti-tank guided weapons and rocket-propelled grenades makes the puma one of the best protected infantry fighting vehicles in the world [Music] blue force tracking shows
