all right so we got a buddy out in the oil patch and he's gonna disagree with everything I say in this video but you guys have been asking for it so here's everything that's wrong with a 7-3 IDI [Music] okay so in the grand scheme of things there's not really a whole lot wrong with these engines we make these series just to kind of highlight what I've come across as a mechanic and my experience working on them things that are gonna cost you money after you buy the truck if you see this outside of the road you found a sweet body a nice clean body what to expect underneath the hood I'm not very fond of the tiger torch idea why we call it Slave Lake it always just smoke bringing it even further with a little brake cleaner okay so Ford started with the IDI in 1983 he started with a 6.9 liter and in 1988 they came out with 7.3 so the six nine and seven threes share a lot in common and the seven three is actually just a bored-out six nine and when they did that they actually made a couple problems they made the cylinder walls that much thinner the 7/3 was prone to cavitation no cavitation is when I a piston goes up and down in the cylinder and as it's doing that it's it's creating microscopic vibrations as it's going up and down and it pushes the coolant away from the cylinder book because there's nothing there it takes a piece of the cylinder with it the fix to this is supplemental coolant additives or SCS I guess so it's a coolant filter and what it does is put a film on the cylinder itself so that when it pushes the coolant away it takes a piece of that film with it and that's it again if you keep up on your maintenance and you change your cooling often enough then you don't suffer from that cavitation issue now on to the cooling system now I'm gonna fix out it I might add a little more speaker wire there to hold it in and I might tip it up so the coolant will exit Oh bug juice will actually flow some went through the rad I accidentally just poured virus all or something in there I don't know what the [ __ ] in that Jerry can I thought it was bug juice but it definitely ain't I think the clipboard warrior safety guy's head would [ __ ] blow up if he came out here and seen how [ __ ] wasn't labeled she'll run air-cool for this one put the cap back on see now what you do is you only put it on half click keep [ __ ] from pressure in my experiences especially in Canada as you can see with the snow the biggest issue is the starting they do not like to start in the winter I've even done work in Africa and the guy that started a school over there thought it'd be a good idea to take an f-350 with an IDI with them and without the glow plugs working it would not start in Africa it's frustrating because I want to go work on till the helixes and I end up working on f-350 I anyway the problem with the starting on the seven threes is that their glow plugs and the glow plug is a little pencil looking like thing that gets positive and negative given to it and turns cherry red there's a weight to start light in the cab and if you start cranking before that weight to start light goes off the glow plugs are cherry red and when the fuel hits that glow plug it'll kind of make a burn mark on the glow plug and it'll destroy that glow plug one or two or three or four bad glow plugs and it won't start anymore so you're constantly replacing the glow plugs in it and then the glow plug controllers were a pain in the butt as well that's the glow plug controller that sometimes they were on the other side as well good deep snow over there bud there's only one truck that can save us as you can see Slave Lake is absolutely in Barry all right hold on let's see if the glow plugs click oh yeah picky clicky looks here one two three all right start spraying oh yeah well she Idol oh yeah look at the sheets so working on them very straightforward I've replaced a bunch of pumps on them before that's very standard my biggest beef with these stupid things is the return lines on the injectors these are the little rubber lines going to them it's a plastic clip that goes around the injector and then these rubber lines with these cheap little hose hose clamps on it and so many heat cycles and it might be worse in our area because it gets so cold and then it gets hot and cold hot and cold the rubber starts to crack and the plastic gets brittle so you'll be driving along you pop your hood and all of a sudden you got fuel spilling everywhere because your return line is leaking again I've done dozens of those kits you find those on line where you just get all new hoses all new lines and all new plastic clips and it's just a maintenance thing in our area every few years you have to do that alright so we got this Korean rickshaw completely dialed into the [ __ ] dirt now all we got to do is hook up these old coolant lines to here and here she's a bit bit colder you can tell cuz the frost I'm gonna take out this forward injector and feed her some hot coolant the old Korean drip job making all of the American muscle right here all right a giant hole burnt in it he's got a little bit of cruise control wire here here I thought I killed her so the number one reason why they're terrible and they're good at the same time is that they really don't make much power because it's got less you can run it forever if you maintain it because it's really not doing that much work the engine weighs 900 pounds the early idea is made about 190 horsepower which isn't bad for Florin eight cylinder back in his day now the power stroke has nothing in common with the IDI other than the displacement you won't have anybody bragging with their IDI you won't see any in pull trucks or anything like that because they just kind of putt along they get you from point A to point B but not very very quickly if you're wondering why it's hard to get moving I don't think this truck has any wheels on it oh I've got wheels but I don't think they're fitting well I guess we figured out how tough the the old driveshaft is on the old play breaker that's the bonus of a welded front decorator wrong wheel drive so the power issue was addressed in the early nineties they started adding turbos to it and it actually worked really really well we're turbo guys we like to turbos and ford realized we could just throw a turbo on it along with some beefier rods and Keystone rings and bigger wrist pins and the Pistons the later atid eyes were much stronger could take a little bit more abuse so the turbos I think they were meant to put out about five psi they generally put out about 10 psi actually make it a big difference that actually helped out with the power a lot so much sold at Ford actually detuned the the last ID is because they were coming up with a power stroke which was 210 horse I believe and they didn't want the ID eyes to take away from the glory of the power strokes that were coming up next so if you look at the horsepower and torque charts of the later 90s you'll see it Peter's off at 3000 even though the horsepower torque is still kind of climbing it was kind of believed you know there was no factual truth that Ford detune them just so that the power strokes that were coming out in the last bit of 94 and 95 wouldn't have any of their glory taken away you don't need [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'd say overall I think there was about 1.5 million of these ideas made and again we've been struggling to make this video because we don't see any of them around anymore unfortunately our climate is killing all the OBS trucks see we've got a yard full of Chevy's and fourth dodges it doesn't matter what kind it is our salt kind of kills them all so aside from the no power the heart starts the cavitation and the cheap plastic lines I've seen many go over a million miles and again it comes down to maintenance if you take care of it and you change your antifreeze and change oil you won't suffer the cavitation and these things were I've seen dozens and dozens go through the shop with over a million dollars oh yeah Slave Lake runs nothing but the best [ __ ] I had made 10 or 15 bucks off the Lube tube but instead of betting it on a starter for Slave Lake I invested it in beer and potato water so it's electric gas diesel starts gonna work man we are still gonna use the ether to jam open the throttle it starts the battery connections are men we added this mint hood latch that works just concise II like om / power steering still works as a lot to say for an old Ford it doesn't steer very good right I think something a little bit bad but we're not worried about dive I'm planning is I don't actually know with Jennifer oil it could be all kinds of creative stuff in there you don't need to check the oil well we're gonna show you how to make your own diesel nine-one-one we don't have money for that kind of fancy [ __ ] out here but we do have winter conditioner and methanol go check out the zip ties by spies he makes some pretty funny videos Pig your traps a piece of [ __ ] sweet ass burn notes on trailers put the ear muffs on the on the kids just turn the volume down and you won't be triggered man Canadians are the best only a couple of us and the one that work a princess odd away I don't know if the boss garage watches my channel a lot I don't know why I'd watch my [ __ ] box challenge channel hey if you don't watch his channel you should go over there and check it out I got a challenge for this guy I'd like to see him show me one another motor that has taken the whoopin that this thing's taken it's done minus 30 cold starts I sprayed ether into it I the driver's-side head gasket is soaked and gone on the outside that when the thing runs you can watch the whatever's left of the [ __ ] gasket flop in and out it it's been raced in the mud bogs before I got it it was an oil patch truck it had heat race line so you could hook it up to you equipment to get the equipment running it also had a service deck on the back and then then when I bought it it had nothing on it so I welded a deck on to it it sold it to a guy and then it got impounded in beaver lodge and then I traded it back but anyway long story short I'd like to see one of his trucks or one a truck that he's heard about take this much can whooping I don't I don't think there is one calling you Oh bud oh look at the treasures I'm fighting at Tuesday's look at this profit let's come home
