REVELATION - Ch. 4 | Cling Bible Study | Come Study With Me

[Music] we are in Revelation chapter 4 and I cannot wait to get into this chapter in Chapter 1 we saw that John was in the spirit and he saw a magnificent vision of Jesus Jesus gave him instructions he said write the things which you have seen and the things which are and the things which will take place after these things we saw in chapters 2 & 3 that John wrote to seven churches that existed at that time and gave them Jesus's message each message ended with he who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches letting us know that all who belong to Christ need to heed those messages now the scene is about to shift dramatically let's jump in I am in Revelation chapter 4 verse 1 reading from the new American Standard Version after these things I looked and behold a door standing open in heaven and the first voice which I had heard like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me said come up here and I will show you what must take place after these things so the first after these things is John saying after the messages to the churches this is what happened he received a vision he looked up and saw a door open in heaven so he sees a door and he hears a voice that voice from chapter 1 that sounds like a trumpet and you can imagine that sound loud piercing commanding come up here and I will show you what must take place after these things take note the shift that's happening this lets us know that John has already written about the things which are those were the churches and he's now shifting to the things which must take place after these things the second after these things is from God's perspective his timetable continuing verse two immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was standing in heaven and one sitting on the throne and he who was sitting was like a Jasper stone and a sardius in appearance and there was a rainbow around the throne like an emerald in appearance John says he is in the spirit as he said in chapter one before he saw the vision of the glorified Christ here he is given a magnificent view of heaven this is a short chapter but throne is a key word it's in this chapter thirteen times everything that happens in this chapter is related to the throne and the first thing that commands John's attention in this vision is the one sitting on the throne our God who reigns forever and ever John describes him by saying he's like a Jasper stone and a sardius in appearance revelation 21 11 describes the holy city of New Jerusalem as having a brilliance like a very costly stone as a stone of crystal-clear Jasper so we might picture that here in chapter 4 that same crystal-clear brilliance as of a diamond the sardius stone was known in ancient times as a blood-red stone John puts these two stones together as describing God this is the magnificence and majesty emanating from his throne he also says there's a rainbow around the throne like an emerald in appearance so green is the dominating color and we remember that a rainbow symbolized God's covenant in Genesis 9 that he would not send another flood to destroy the earth it symbolizes his faithfulness continuing verse 4 around the throne were twenty-four Thrones and upon the Thrones I saw 24 elders sitting clothed and white garments and golden crowns on their heads so a rainbow is around the throne and also around the throne are 24 Thrones with 24 elders sitting on them of course there are many interpretations as to who these elders are as we are observing what we see is that there are 24 of them they have on white garments and golden crowns on their heads these are not angels we'll see later that angels are also in the throne room contrasted with the elders scripture interprets Scripture so what we know is that in the messages to the churches jesus said that he who overcomes would be clothed in white garments and would wear a crown of life so these are likely believers those who have overcome but we aren't told exactly who they are continuing verse 5 out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven spirits of God so as we observe the description John is giving everything is related to the throne the rainbow and the thrones of the elders are around the throne of God now out from the throne come flashes of lightning and the sound of thunder can you even imagine the sensory experience from sights to sounds I'm thinking about a thunderstorm when you're at home and the storm is right nearby and the sound is so loud and fearsome it just shakes you now imagine that as you're seeing the magnificence of this scene including flashes of lightning coming at you this is heaven y'all full of glory and before the throne john sees seven lamps of fire burning which are the seven spirits of God the Spirit of God is ever-present he is a member of the Godhead he has a powerful ministry to us believers and he is right there before the throne continuing verse six and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass like crystal and in the center and around the throne four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind the first creature was like a lion and the second creature like a calf and the third creature had a face like that of a man and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle and the four living creatures each one of them having six wings are full of eyes around and within and day and night they do not cease to say holy holy holy is the Lord God the Almighty who was and who is and who is to come we continue with the prepositions as John tells us what's around the throne out from the throne and before the throne so here also before the throne stretching out before it is something like he says a sea of glass like crystal each of these things is just every ultimate word magnificence splendor opulence this is where those words truly fit a sea of Christal and then in the center and around the throne these four living creatures creatures that we do not have here on earth we have never seen anything like this they were created by God especially for worship all John can say is what they're like so that our human minds can try to get some kind of picture one is like a lion the second is like a calf the third had a face like a man and the fourth was like a flying eagle but at the same time they're nothing like those things because these creatures have six wings each and eyes all around and within and also they can talk not I don't talk they worship they have a full-time ministry John says day and night and just to make sure we understand what that means he says they do not cease to say holy holy holy is the Lord God the Almighty who was and who is and who is to come I'm reminded of Isaiah 6:1 through 3 which says in the year of king uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne lofty and exalted with the Train of his robe filling the temple Seraphim stood before him each having six wings with two he covered his face and with two he covered his feet and with two he flew and one called out to another and said holy holy holy is the Lord of hosts the whole earth is full of his glory continuing verse nine and when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who sits on the to him who lives forever and ever the 24 elders will fall down before him who sits on the throne and will worship Him who lives forever and ever and will cast their crowns before the throne saying worthy are you our Lord and our God to receive glory and honor and power for you created all things and because of your will they existed and were created the praise and worship from the four living creatures ignites praise and worship from the twenty-four elders they were sitting on their thrones but now they come up off of their thrones and fall down before the one who is sitting on the throne they were wearing golden crowns but now they cast those crowns before him they are submitted to their God they are prostrate before their God and they give him glory this entire chapter features the throne and in particular the one sitting on the throne it features our Almighty majestic God who receives worship day and night John's vision is leading somewhere it's setting up the scene for what will happen next and we'll see that in chapter 5 but I want us to ask ourselves how often do we worship our God how often do we give him honor and thanks this is what he receives in heaven day and night because he's worthy of honor and praise we are his people here on earth and His Spirit indwells us how often are our hearts and minds lifted to him how often do we even think of him I pray that we be more mindful of the Lord day to day more mindful of his glory here on earth so much glory in his creation I pray we are moved a lifestyle of worship of living a life that is bowed before him a life that's submitted to him I pray that from our lips as well as our hearts and our lives we say to him who sits on the throne to him who lives for ever and ever worthy are you our Lord and our God to receive glory and honor
