here men Thank You Don Thank You Lee if you'd like to take your seats please I'm gonna begin by standing up here but I might walk around a little bit I don't like being this distant when it's this kind of meeting well we're going to look at the book of Revelation okay now what we're going to do is we're going to look at this over the coming months there's 22 chapters in the book of Revelation so I would like to do one chapter each session but in actual fact especially in chapters 2 and 3 it might take us several sessions to get through those chapters because there's an awful lot of information to look at in those chapters and in some of the other chapters but this evening what I want us to do is just give us a an introduction a summary of what it is that we're going to be looking at so I'll probably not not go too deep tonight but try and give us a foundation upon which we can build over the coming months now I predict it'll probably take two years to finish this study okay but at least we've made a start on it I am NOT a prophecy expert and I am NOT an expert on the book of Revelation I don't read the book of Revelation any more than I read any other book I read it in the same sequential process as I read all the scriptures but the book of Revelation is very special very special it's the only book that has what you could call the audacity to claim a special place it's a book that claims a special blessing upon those who read it now if you think about where the book of Revelation stands in in God's scriptures it's the conclusion of everything God has written and if you ever want to understand something you read the conclusion you know even even in business when you're given reports you read the executive summary which summarizes the findings of the entire report the book of Revelation sums up everything God has said in the previous 65 books of the Bible the problem is the book of Revelation is written in code so unless you've read the other 65 books and stand what those 65 books mean you won't understand what the book of Revelation is talking about I remember the first time someone told me Jesus was coming back at school as a teenager and they said go home and read the book of Revelation so I did and it meant absolutely nothing to me I was more confused having read it what are these big red dragons what are these angels and trumpets and candlesticks and and bowls and seals I mean you know I've seen seals at Scarborough zoo but what are seals what have seals got to do with the end times and so and I literally didn't know what sea I thought it went are our seals not they fry seals in heaven sea lions so I was young please forgive me so you won't understand the book of Revelation if you haven't read the Bible it's no good pretending you will in the same way as if you turn to the conclusion of a book any book a novel a mystery and just read the end chapter it wouldn't make any sense to you you wouldn't know who the people were you wouldn't know the characters were you wouldn't know the plots you wouldn't know what the book had been talking about and if you've ever watched a movie with someone who keeps popping out to the kitchen to make cups of tea and and get food and sandwiches during the first half of the film not at all thinking of anyone in particular or when I say that but if you do what happens is when they come in at the end to watch the end of the movie they're saying who's that what's that why are they here who are they and it's because they haven't watched the rest of the movie so they don't know who that is what they're doing or why they're there who's he where's he come from well if you if you hadn't gone to the you know to the ladies halfway through the film you would have known that that person was actually the person who murdered her so if you don't read the Bible the book of Revelation won't make that much sense because it's written in the court of what the Bible talks about so let's just dive straight in with verse 1 of chapter 1 of Revelation so if we can put that off this old place so we'll just go through each verse and then we'll do a little exposition of verse and we'll just go through okay the revelation from Jesus Christ which God gave him notice that God gives Jesus the revelation so if you don't know Jesus you're not going to know the revelation he doesn't give you the revelation straightaway there understand that it's the revelation given to Jesus God is not interested in you understanding everything he's interested in you having Jesus because Jesus is your savior there is no point God explaining things to you if you don't have Jesus it won't do anything that's what Adam and Eve did in the garden they wanted understanding separate from God God doesn't want to give you understanding separate from himself you'll only understand these things if you have Jesus the revelation from Jesus Christ which God gave to him to show his servants so Jesus wants to show us what must soon take place you will find in the Bible that when God calls someone his friend whether it was Abraham back in Genesis chapter 19 or whether it was his friends in the upper room his disciples where he said I no longer call you servants I call you friends you will find once God calls someone his friend he tells them what's going to happen in the future did you follow that you will find that the people who God trusts the most they're the ones he gives the most prophetic revelation to we're not just talking about spiritual gifts words of knowledge they're just gifts God gives to anyone but an understanding of the times and the seasons and what to do when what is prophetically going to happen God shares with his friends with those who are closest to him and that is why throughout scriptures the people who are called the beloved or the friends are the ones who have the revelation of the future so Abraham was God's friend so God told him what was going to happen with the destruction of sodom and gomorrah and how he could save his family daniel is called the one who is highly beloved he's one of the most prophetic of all the Old Testament characters in fact he gives predictions that we rely on today especially about his seventy weeks and the prophecies that will come the restoration of Israel etc because he was highly beloved and close to God God gave Daniel an understanding of what was going to happen and when we come to the New Testament Jesus closest friend was the disciple John the Apostle John and it's the Apostle John who has the greatest revelation of what is to come so we'll look at that as we go on so he wants us to know what must soon take place there's often a myth a statement that goes around in Christian circles or you can't figure out what's going to happen in the future so there's no point trying to understand it that's utter nonsense God has purposely written down what's going to happen so that we can understand it the problem is too many Christians are spiritually lazy they don't read their Bibles so they don't understand the book of Revelation but actually we're told very clearly what's going to happen down to the specific nations down to the general dispensations and time periods and God lays all this out in a format in the book of Revelation so we can understand the prophetic patterns all the way through the Bible but especially in the book of Revelation he has made it known by sending his angel to his servant John so they were identified that the book of Revelation is written by John okay someone who you can trust right Jesus said in the last days there'll be many false prophets and many false teachers right if there's anyone you can trust other than Jesus himself is the Apostle John Jesus trusted the Apostle John so much he gave his mum to him he gave the revelation to him he gave greatest insight Jesus always took John everywhere so we can totally trust what John says if you can't trust what John says you can't trust what anybody says okay John doesn't claim to have written anything of his own account he says everything in this book was dictated to him by Jesus Christ okay he literally saw it and he wrote it down word for word in fact throughout the book you'll find that John often hasn't got a clue what's going on and he and he's in quite a bit of difficulty trying to describe what he's seeing you know how could a first century fisherman describe nuclear warfare I mean he would have no capacity to describe it other than fire falling from heaven cities dissolving people melting before they hit the ground and that's some of the language he does use so it's given to the Apostle John and he's he's being given that to make it known to us okay can we just put up the first picture Ruth so that's the first verse let me just explain something now just to help us understand this okay can you all see that that's a wedding right you see the man there it's a Jewish wedding by the way because this is a the understanding of the Bible is always from a Jewish perspective so there's the man you can see him there a nice beard yeah a nice hat who is he marrying and any guesses would you recognize her if you met her why can you not tell who she is because she's wearing a veil okay now in Jewish understanding the bride always wear always wears a veil until she is married right then the veil is removed okay now I'm sure some of you know this because we've looked at this before in the Greek language removing the veil is a paw khalipa the veil is collector Apple means the removal of apocalyptic means the removing of the veil that's literally what the word means so when we read can we go back to verse 1 when we go to the book of Revelation remember that's an interpretation of the Greek the word is actually the apocalypse now in our understanding many people use that word today in in like almost like Hollywood type language or the apocalypse the end of the world that isn't what it means Apocalypto means Apocalypto means the removing of the veil the book of Revelation is actually about a wedding did you know that did you know that the main climax of the whole of the book of Revelation is the bride finally being given to Jesus Christ so from the beginning of Genesis where we start with a woman being created for the Son of God Adam in the final book the book of Revelation we reach the conclusion where the veil is moved appau calypso the veil is now moved the bride is now going to be given to the bridegroom he can take her as his bride that's how the book of Revelation ends but it starts with that very word the veil is now going to be removed so what's happening is whereas you couldn't see the bride before whereas you couldn't recognize it now you're gonna recognize it because God's gonna show you exactly what's going to happen although we had all the illusions and the allegories and the metaphors and the parables and the pictures in the rest of the Bible in the book of Revelation we're now going to see the veil removed so there's no excuse for not understanding because God's gonna make it clear he's gonna make it known he's gonna send His angels he's gonna send his servant John it's gonna be written down so let's understand the book of Revelation there's only 22 chapters in the book of Revelation there are 800 direct references to the Old Testament 800 in 22 chapters right now at most there's only just about 400 verses in the whole of Revelation so every verse on average has two direct references to the Old Testament when reading revelation you've got to understand that if you just read a verse without going back to what that verse actually meant in the Old Testament and even the New Testament you'll not get a correct understanding of what that verse means you can't just interpret it according to your own understanding or a dragon means this know a dragon means what it means in the Old Testament not what we think it means serpent a dragon you've got to interpret things in light of what the Bible says it is the Bible always interprets itself another thing we read in the book of Revelation a lot of people try and bring in external information and make it apply to the Bible let me give you an example when when you get to chapter 13 and you start trying to work out who Anti Christ is a lot of people will start adding up the letters of people's names like Hitler and dr. answer Hitler was the Antichrist because if you add up Adolphe Hitler and you change the letters around two numbers and you work out this he's the Antichrist don't fall to that into that trap the Bible always interprets itself you don't need other information to work out what things are it will be contained in the Bible because otherwise God is giving us information that he knows we can't understand are you following me whereas if we've got the whole Bible he knows we can work it out because we can all read the whole Bible so let's understand this the book of Revelation is the pulling together of all the prophecies of all the predictive patterns throughout human history from Genesis is pulling it all together and finally out working its eventual prophetic fulfillment what you find in the book of Revelation are patterns that have been repeated throughout the rest of the Bible but now they reach their consummation now they reach their final 'ti and so you can work things out by reading the rest of the Bible so it's the apple collector it's the removing of the veil we can recognize we can recognize who the bride is it's the church the hidden mystery from the Garden of Eden right through to the end of Revelation Jesus created everything so he could have a bride he created everything so he could have a church that's what the Father Son and Holy Spirit were doing a creation that is what they're going to get at the consummation the Bible starts with the creation of the bride it ends with the consummation of the bride so that's the first verse so we've got a lot of information right there in the first verse okay let's go to the second verse then Apostle John who testifies to everything he saw that is the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ go to verse 3 as well because this sort of adds emphasis to the same thing blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear it and take it to heart what is written in it because the time is at hand or near as it says there in the NIV there are two aspects to understanding revelation according to those two verses that we've just read one you have to read it for yourself read aloud which is a direct interpretation reading in the in history actually reading meant speaking it not reading it in your heads like we do they wouldn't have understood that it meant actually speaking it so there's two ways you will understand the book of Revelation first of all you read the Bible for yourself yeah you don't look for someone else to read it for you second understanding you hear it from other people God sent John to teach it and to write it so there's only two ways you're going to understand what God is going to do one you read it for yourself two you listen to someone who you know God has sent who is trustworthy who can help interpret it for you okay pretty straightforward but you've got to understand you must have those two aspects if you're only gonna come here and listen to me telling you about it but not reading it for yourself you aren't going to hear it you won't understand it you have to do it yourself secondly if you just do it yourself but you don't listen to people who God sends to teach it you'll never fully understand it either God gives lots of different gifts to his church who help us understand things if evangelists prophets apostles teachers as well as lots of other gifts okay so let's let's just settle that do you really want to understand what God wants then you have to do so you do your own work as well as listening to other people that God will send into your life to help you understand okay so there we've got verse three the time is near the time is I think literally the time is at hand well that means that any moment God can like hit that stop button at any moment don't ever think that by reading the book of Revelation you can work out how long there is to go you can't because God can snatch his people away at any moment there will still be a final seven-year period from that time but there is no indicator of when Jesus takes the bride there isn't one in Scripture Jesus has purposely told us there isn't one there are indications of when he returns you can work that out but you cannot work out when he takes his bride it's known as the doctrine of imminence see a lot of people who try and work all these things out there ignoring one of the key doctrines in the Bible the doctrine of Eamon imminency Jesus clearly taught that you had to be ready at all times because you do not know the day nor the hour you do not know what time the Son of man comes he comes like a thief in the night over and over again this is repeated literally over and over and over again throughout the New Testament so you cannot work out at what time Jesus takes his bride you cannot work out when Jesus takes away his church he takes away those who are ready after that there are things you can work out but I don't want to be here to work that out right I want him to take me really do but there will be people here who will be able to work things out because revelation gives us very specific timescales after certain events we'll look at those as we go through the chapters in the coming months okay so there we've got down to chapter 3 the time is near if we go to chapter 4 sorry verse 4 john or as we would say i john he's writing his letter now John to the seven churches in the province of Asia grace and peace to you from him who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven spirits before his throne let's just stop here let's just give you some background information as to what's going on here what's happened is John has been exiled on the island of Patmos we'll read this as we go through the book now John was exiled on the island of Patmos has anyone been to Turkey on holiday and he went been to the islands at the side of between Turkey and Greece there's a little island called Patmos there's not much there it was used as a penal colony during the time of the Caesar Caesar Domitian exiled John onto Patmos right and now Domitian reigned over Rome from the 1st century AD 81 through into 90-something ad I forget the exact date so John wrote the book of Revelation towards the end of the 1st century all the rest of the Bible had been written with one possible exception does anyone know that one possible book that might not have been written no Jude was written before Jude was in The Temper the Jerusalem church which was destroyed in AD 70 so he had to be before no it's not Hebrews it's a sort of a trick question yeah some people think the Gospel of John was written after the book of Revelation now you might see why as we go through the book of Revelation but some people think that John wrote revelation first and then the gospel all the other apostles had died when he wrote revelation so everything was written except what John had wrote okay so we went we might allude to that later on it's not an absolute fact but some people think so okay so John is is writing here and he's writing to the seven churches in the province of Asia so let's just stop there okay now we'll read some of the rest of the chapter Jesus keeps telling him to write to these seven churches okay can we put up the first am ii powerpoint picture please ruth now first of all let's just dismiss the terminology and put it into modern language it doesn't mean Asia as we know it Asia was one of the Roman provinces which today is Turkey okay so don't think you know China or Singapore or India we don't mean Asia in that context it was the province one of the Roman provinces were today is Turkey and so John is told to write to seven churches in Turkey why because there were hundreds of churches around at the time of John's writing maybe thousands actually but let's just stick to hundreds for a conservative estimate and the biggest churches weren't in Turkey you think of some of the biggest church of the church in Jerusalem for a start which had had to move because of the persecution that happened in AD 70 they'd moved to a place called Pella which is in modern-day Jordan so there was that church you think of the church at Rome I was a pretty big Church props the most influential church going through our history what about the church at Antioch Antioch silver well it's actually into modern day Turkey Antioch but it's not one of the seven churches that he writes - why does he write to these seven churches some of which are very insignificant and why only write to the churches in Turkey is God showing us even by this simple sign that there's something very prophetic in the end times about Turkey I think so I think there's a very clear reason why God writes to the churches in Turkey now we won't look at that tonight but we will look at it as we go through the book especially when we start to look at the churches next time there's a very very specific reason why he's addressing the churches in Turkey because turkey in the Bible isn't cold turkey it's called something else that we'll look at in the coming months so he's told to write to these seven churches okay and he's told to write very clear things about these churches now straight away let's just um address this why seven okay why the number seven now those of you who know your Bibles will know that God does everything in sevens he always called the hepatic structure of Scripture God does everything in sevens now in the book of Revelation alone there are 15 only 22 chapters there are 50 explicit groups of seven for me this is another reason of proof of how God wrote the Bible because if you just tried to write this making sure everything was in groups of seven and even the words were in groups of seven and everything said was in seven different factors and everything was you wouldn't be able to do it you'd need a computer and I'm not even sure a computer could do it there are 50 explicit sevens in revelation seven seals seven trumpets seven bowls seven churches seven candlesticks seven stars all these sevens that they're the explicit wants but there's more than the explicit wants there's lots of sevens that don't say they're in sevens but if you count them up they are in sevens and there's over 200 of those in 22 chapters some people claim there's almost an infinite number depending on how you group the sevens all the way through the book it's like one of those things that the more you look the more there is you know you'll find people saying soft stuff to the Apostle John throughout the book but when you add up the number of people who say that certain thing the seven of them it doesn't say the seven but if you count them the seven when you think of the doxologies that are given you no salvation belongs to our God praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and power and strength 7 everything's in sevens it's like God's signature when you see this hepatic structure it's proof that God's right in it everything's in sevens first verse of the Bible Genesis 1:1 seven words in Hebrew seven groupings it's all in sevens incredible mathematical precision all the way through the Bible in the original language not in English okay so you'll find this we looked at this last week when we looked at a not being the seventh from Adam when God hid seven he's always reached the end of his prophetic cycle the Shabbat the seventh when God hits the seven it means he has now reached his completion seven is very specifically the number of the church okay there's there's basically four perfect numbers in Scripture 3 7 10 and 12 and each of them represent perfection in a different aspect 3 is the perfection of unity like the Trinity itself sevens the perfection of completion of his church 10 is the perfection of testing 12 is the completion of governmental authority but when you look at the 7 God is showing us that he's now arrived at his completed plan for his bride for his people so when you look in the Old Testament and you find Brides mentioned you'll always find the number 7 significant the go to a well where the seven sheep well there'll be seven women or when when Jacob wants his bride how many years does he have to serve seven years he gets the wrong wife so how many years does he have to serve for another wife seven right it's all the way through that sevens always linked to obtaining the thing that God wants so Elijah's Shunammite woman goes into hiding for seven years and then she gets back everything that was given to her so you'll find this throughout the whole Bible seven years the the slaves have to be freed seven times seven years is the jubilee where everybody gets all back all their inheritance but it's not just seven days it also works on seven weeks it also works on seven months is seven months from Passover the beginning of Christ's sacrifice to the Tabernacles the coming back of Jesus again is seven months the feasts not the time period of literal his second coming the Sevenfold structure of Scripture it's incredible even the thousands of years are in sevens okay so in the seventh millennium Jesus inaugurates the thousand-year reign where are we on God's time clock nobody knows because we don't know the exact date but it's around six thousand years so at some point we're gonna hit the 7 where Jesus come back and reigns that's at least seven years away but it could start tonight we don't know because we don't know they exactly it God's purposely hidden it from us okay in the Bible the wedding feast from the bridegroom coming to get the bride last of seven days but the bride wasn't told what time the husband was coming in return okay we'd like that instead of the other way around one way because we have a tweet the you know I've done seven weddings this last year and everyone the pure bridegroom sat there not knowing what time the bride's gonna turn up in the Hebrew wedding it's the other way around the bride's told she must be ready she doesn't know when he's coming he's gonna shout the bridegroom's hear she's got to be ready and then the wedding ceremony lasts seven days a full week a full Shabbat okay always in sevens everything's in servants so as we go through revelation I'm not point out every seven to you but occasionally I'll say I guess how many of those around and you'll find there are seven of them it's the way that God were okay so we've got the seven churches we'll look at these again as we go through this chapter and there's very specific reasons to why he picks the seven churches grace and peace to you from him who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven spirits before his throne now that's an unfortunate interpretation most of you will have Bibles there will be a footnote that has an alternative reading for seven spirits does anyone have that in their footnotes of their Bible Sevenfold that is really what it means it's just in the original language seven different and seven fold it can be the same word it literally means seven aspects of the Spirit okay so who who is dictating this to John him who is no go back chapter four verse four chapter one verse four sorry him who is who was and is to come and from the seven spirits before the throne next verse and from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witness the firstborn from among the dead I will come unto his titles later okay can you see it's from three people he who was and is and is to come the Sevenfold spirit and from Jesus Christ can you see the Trinity directly reference there you remember God the Father Yahweh the one who is who was and is to come the I am the everlasting everlasting one Jesus Christ Yeshua mashiac the faithful witness the firstborn from the dead and from the Sevenfold Spirit so John is saying is the Trinity that's telling you this not me yeah Father Son and Holy Spirit are dictating this the book of Revelation is dictated from Father Son and Holy Spirit now all the books of the Bible are through inspiration inspired by the Holy Spirit as the writers were carried along by the breath of God as they wrote the scriptures but revelation is different it's being dictated to John he's being told what to write word-for-word and you'll find sometimes he's told not to write things sometimes the voice will say don't write that down which is interesting we'll look at that when we come to it but can we put up this PowerPoint please put up the next one please I just want us to work to focus on what the Sevenfold Spirit is so obviously it's the Holy Spirit but it doesn't mean the seven Holy Spirit's there's only one Holy Spirit but he has a Sevenfold nature okay so there's a Sevenfold nature of the Holy Spirit now remember everything that said in Revelation is a direct reference to something that's in the Old Testament so if we go to Isaiah chapter 11 Isaiah chapter 11 verse 1 so I'll just read down a chute will come up from the stump of Jesse from his roots a branch will bear fruit the Spirit of the Lord the Holy Spirit will rest upon him and then it describes what the Spirit of the Lord is okay the spirit of wisdom and of understanding the spirit of counsel remember he's called the counselor and of might remember he's the spirit of power and the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord one more verse and he will delight in the fear of the Lord he will not judge by what he sees with his eyes or decide by what he hears with his ears so John is giving us a very clear description here of what the Holy Spirit is can we put up that PowerPoint again please Ruth the Holy Spirit has the Sevenfold aspect upon him and he wants to impart that to us he wants every single one notice the seven aspects seven aspects there of the Sevenfold Spirit and each of the aspects is represented by each of the flames that comes on the menorah how many flames does the menorah have seven it's never a trick question when I asked you how many is always seven okay what happened on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came down the flame of fire came upon them all okay so they received the Sevenfold Spirit not one of those all of them the church the church is always represented by the menorah okay so when you have the Holy Spirit he gives you knowledge when you have the Holy Spirit he's your counselor he gives you wisdom and understanding he gives you power and he gives you that reverent fear of the holiness of God and he empowers you to do that can you see that now John saying that he's in the spirit so how does John write revelation because this is upon him when the Holy Spirit's upon you you have these abilities all of them because you can't cut him up there's a principle in the sacrificial system of the Old Testament whenever you sacrificed a dove you weren't allowed to cut it up it's a picture of the Holy Spirit you either have all of him or you have none of him you don't get a bit of him I heard a preacher recently say that when children receive the Holy Spirit they don't get a childlike version of the Holy Spirit they get the same one you get so don't despise the Holy Spirit coming upon children they don't get a junior version of the Holy Spirit you know a young Holy Spirit that's got to grow up no they get the same Holy Spirit when we get the Holy Spirit we have the Holy Spirit upon us okay so this is what the Sevenfold Spirit means just for us to understand that cuz it'll crop up again especially in the throne room the seven spirits before god it's the Sevenfold Spirit the Holy Spirit he's got seven aspects there aren't seven Holy Spirit's there's only one okay let's go back to the scriptures then chapter 5 sorry verse five so from the Sevenfold spirit and from Jesus Christ now what happens now is there are titles given to Jesus guess how many what a surprise there are titles given to Jesus now I'm not going to dwell on those now because each one of these titles that's given to Jesus in chapter 1 is repeated throughout Revelation and each one of these titles of Jesus is given specifically to each of the churches so one of the churches will know Jesus in one of these ways better than the other churches you know none of us have a monopoly on who Jesus is every single one of us knows Jesus in a slightly different way to everybody else it's the same Jesus but you might know him in a slightly more powerful way one of his aspects than someone else because you've had to rely on him mark for that so he's the firstborn from among the dead unless you've been through severe bereavement you might not appreciate that as much as someone who has knowing that Jesus has conquered death he's the ruler of the kings of the earth what does that mean you see there's a great danger that people will allegorize the rulership of Jesus Christ when Gabriel appeared to Mary he said he will sit on David's throne and rule Israel now either Gabriel was lying or that's still going to happen a lot of people today don't understand that Jesus is going to return physically and rule from Jerusalem is going to rule the planet from the throne of God in Jerusalem that is prophesied hundreds of times in the Old Testament in fact some people say about 2,000 times the rulership of the Messiah from the kingdom in fact it's emphasized so much that that's perhaps the main reason the Jewish people rejected Jesus at his first coming because they knew he was coming to rule and to reign and be the king of Israel even at his cross what did they port the King of the Jews it was a mockery he's not the king yes he is he's the ruler of the kings of the earth but what they missed is that he comes twice now they should have got that because every single person in the Old Testament whether it's Joseph Moses David every single person in the Old Testament who were sent to rule Israel came twice and the first time they came they were always rejected Joseph's brothers rejected him the first time but when they were dying a starvation they accepted them Moses was rejected the first time this is who made you ruler over us and Moses act to disappear for forty years but when he came back the second time they accepted him David had to go live with the Philistines but when he came back the second time they accepted him as king noticed they were they didn't just reject their leaders in the Old Testament the Jews but their leaders went and lived with the Gentiles did you notice that David went live with the Philistines Moses went and lived with the Midianites Joseph went and lived with the Egyptians the Messiah when he comes will be rejected by the Jews but will be accepted by the Gentile nations and that's exactly what we've seen Jesus is accepted in Gentile nations were still rejected by the Jews until he comes the second time then they will accept him in fact Jesus doesn't actually come back until the Jews cry out for him did you know that Jesus said you will not see me again until you say blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Jesus comes when the Jewish nation finally accepts who he is do you know more more Jews have believed in Messiah in the last twenty years in the previous two thousand did you know there are more jews believing in messiah today at a faster rate than at any other time in history other than the first century church when he was jewish that in itself is a start is a sign that we are at the end of the age because jesus says it would be trampled down till the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled when the jew start turning back to Jesus as they did in the book of Acts that is a sign that we are at the end of the edge the fastest growth of churches amongst the Jews is happening right now there are thousands getting saved at the moment in the past hundreds of years there's been a few hundred every few years there are thousands getting saved weekly at the moment there is a massive work of God going amongst the Jews that in itself is a sign he's coming to rule let's make no doubt about that to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood John can't help declaring their the glory of Jesus so if we go down to the next verse so there's lots of titles of Jesus in these next few verses but we'll look at those as we go through the book because each of the titles mentioned again so here we read something he has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father to him be glory and power forever and ever right just just to remind us there that you've got that phrase again it happens a few times Peter quotes it in his epistles and we can tend to miss its importance he has made it to be kingdom and priests now just just to explain kingdom actually the word King and Kingdom in the original languages is the same word right King and where a king is is the king's domain King Dom it's the same word so you can literally read that I think the King James does interpret it that way made us to be kings and priests or a kingdom of priests or kingdoms and priests it means the same thing right now just to remind us that in itself was mind-blowing to anyone who would have read that in the first century because kings and priests were never the same thing you could be anointed as a king or you could be anointed as a priest Pastor John mentioned it this morning you couldn't be anointed as both there was only two people in the Old Testament that we're anointed as both one was Melchizedek who was a type of Christ to come and the other one was the Messiah who hadn't come yet now when Jesus came he was the high priest and the King now today just to explain this the Jews many do still think there's going to be two messiahs because they understand from the Bible there has to be a messiah what they call Mashiach Ben Yossef the the Messiah from the tribe of Joseph who will suffer and then Mashiach Ben David that the Messiah from the tribe of David who will be king and they can't reconcile the two it can't be the same person but it is the same person it's the one who is rejected and suffered who will be the high priest but then the one who will be king now in the New Testament the church is always called priests and kings okay we get the same Holy Spirit we have the same anointing not only are you anointed by the Holy Spirit into the royal family of God you are also anointed by the Holy Spirit to serve as a priesthood that's important because when we get through the book of Revelation you will find that everybody there has a priestly duty to perform you aren't just saved to be part of the royal family you are saved to be a priest you have a function to fulfill you've got a job to do we'll look at that as we go through the book because when we get to heaven in chapter 4 it will tell us some of the things we should be doing especially when we look at the churches in chapter 2 and chapter 3 let's go to verse 7 then look I prefer the King James behold behold he comes look he's coming with the clouds every eye will see him even those who pierced him and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him so shall it be a man just a reminder again he is literally coming yeah every eye will see him even those who killed him now when he comes it says all peoples on earth will mourn because of him when Jesus returns everybody on earth emphatic there everybody on earth will mourn they'll be sad they'll be depressed they'll be upset when we read what happens in the book of Revelation they start say hide us from him we don't want to see him we want nothing to do with him everyone on earth says that now I've got a problem with that have you because I can't wait for him to come so if everyone on earth is going to mourn when he comes that means those who love him and there is that is that a fair logic yeah now you'll find throughout the book there's always these hints okay there's always a very clear distinction in the book of Revelation between what what literal in the Greek is the earth dwellers those who are just of the earth and those who dwell in heaven there's always a very clear distinction between the two God differentiates people into two categories those who are of heaven and those were of earth you've got to notice this when you read revelation or you'll get very confused because his bride is in heaven after chapter 3 okay his bride in heaven she's not on earth now there are a lot of people on earth and some of those people believe and there's certainly a Jewish remnant on earth that believes but they're on earth you decide whether you're born of the earth or whether you're born of heaven John chapter 3 says you never see the kingdom of heaven unless you born from above you're children of heaven so understand that from the beginning or you'll get confused as you go through the book you'll start to think is that me or is that means that was always that was the children of God are always talked about as being in heaven not those who dwell on the earth there's always a clear distinction so shall it be amen okay so it's going to be literal you're going to see his wounds you're gonna be able to see him with your eyes he's physically going to return the physical human being Jesus Christ Jesus is not a ghost he is a person okay now the father is a person but you can't see him but Jesus is a person and you can see him okay he always made people touch him when they met him touch my hands put your hand in my side see the wounds I have flesh and bone not flesh and blood because he doesn't got any blood it was all poured out for us okay so that's verse 7 okay verse 8 it goes into more titles about himself but I just want to focus on one of one of them because I think we can sometimes misunderstand this one he says I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord God who is and who was and who is to come the all mighty okay now I'm sure most people in this room understand that Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega yeah he's the first and the last he's the beginning and the end he's the one who is and who was and who is to come now because titles of Jesus to us just roll off the tongue sometimes we can forget what they actually mean so we'll look at them in detail as we go through the book but this this one here I am the Alpha and Omega now we take that for granted but think if you'd never heard that before what does that mean if I came up to you and then uses what's your name and I said I'm the eh-2-zed I'm the aten d'azyr what would you think about from you think I'm a bit strange what what would you think like oh that's nice okay now the Alpha and the Omega obviously in the Greek alphabet is the first letter in the last letter okay Alpha Omega it's not the alphas same it's an a sound but Omega is not a Zed sound is actually a like a W or sound um and so in the Greek he's saying the last two letters of the alphabet yeah still with me which is a bit of a strange thing to say if you think about it but Jesus isn't speaking Greek it's written in Greek but Jesus didn't speak Greek how do we know that because the Bible tells us over and over again that he actually spoke Hebrew and Aramaic okay so what were his last words on the cross my God my God why have you forsaken me written in Greek but even in the Gospels it says alloy alloy lama sabachthani why does it say that cause that's what what that's what he actually said in the Aramaic he didn't speak it in Greek he spoke Aramaic Hebrew and Aramaic from the same root language okay so whenever Jesus is quoted word for word they quote him in the Aramaic the Aramaic Hebrew which is what he spoke so when he rose the little girl from the dead he said Talitha koum ii which in in aramaic means little girl i say to you get up they quote the aramaic so even when he sais and he heals the man who cannot speak his size and looks to heaven and he says if after which in aramaic means be opened right so we know he spoke those languages because the bible tells us but even when he speaks from heaven he still speaks in those languages do you know how we know that because we're told that in Acts chapter 26 verse 14 can we just put that up please Ruth Acts chapter 26 verse 14 we all fell to the ground and I heard a voice saying to me in yeah Jesus spoke in Aramaic now if some of you've got NIV is in the footnotes it'll say another word so that anyone got an NIV that's an IV but we've not got the footnotes Hebrew if you read the King James it says Hebrew Aramaic and Hebrew in the root in the the root of the language it's the same root language so it overlaps an awful lot Aramaic or Hebrew okay so and we clarified Jesus speaks Hebrew Aramaic Hebrew yeah when he speaks from heaven or on earth so when he spoke to John he didn't say I am the Alpha and the Omega John is now translating that into Greek which we translate into English as a to Zed but does anybody know what it is in Hebrew the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Aleph Hebrews don't call it the alphabet they call it the Aleph bet because their first word word is Aleph okay does anyone know the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet anyone know shout it out towel or Taff I'll f Taff I left towel depending on how you pronounce it no one's absolutely sure okay right at this moment you go so what why have you just spent 10 minutes explaining that to us here's why The Aleph and the Taff originally in the paleo Hebrew language not in the modern Hebrew of today were represented by two symbols can we just put up that next PowerPoint okay The Aleph was the sacrificial ox and the towel or the Taff was across okay so when Jesus says I am the Aleph and the Taff he's saying I am the sacrifice that was crucified it's the sacrifice in the cross and so the Tao the TAF it used to be a cross now at the side I've put in the modern Hebrew what they've done is it's been changed over the years so now it's like it little X and like an n-type picture but it's still the same letters you still pronounce it the same they've just changed the the writing from a hieroglyphic picture to a more square Hebrew block which we do in all languages but originally that's what Jesus was saying okay so when you find in scripture where people put a mark on God's people so you know the story in Ezekiel where Ezekiel said an angel with a writing kid came and put a mark on everyone's forehead that word is not mark that word is Taff he put across he put the sign of the Cross on every one that belonged to him God still does the same today Satan marks people with his mark God marks people with his mark it's a spiritual thing but God marx's with the cross it's the same today you'll find that in the Bible but they won't translate it as towel because no one in English would know what that meant so they say a mark but it's actually the cross it's the mark of the Cross but that's not all when you read Hebrew when you learn Hebrew when you study Hebrew Aleph and Taff spells a word now we will pronounce it it eat now that word is in the Old Testament hundreds of times hundreds of times does anyone know what that word means no you don't you know why no one knows what he means because it's never translated it's never translated but it's there so in your English Bible whenever that word crops up in the Old Testament when you translate it into English that words left out they don't translate it did you know that now the Hebrew cell it's because of the grammatical structure and it's just part of a sentence structure and it it doesn't actually mean anything but that's not that's not the whole truth let me give you an example you'll find this very interesting and you put up the next slide the next one down okay that is the first verse of the Bible in Hebrew and in English ok guess how many words there are in the first verse of the Bible seven Bereshit bara Elohim at a shame I invite that Haaretz okay in Hebrew seven now how do you translate that into English in the beginning Bereshit created Barack God Elohim are left of hold on a minute we don't translate that into a word why hashamayim the heavens Viette and how are at the earth newspaper in Jerusalem is called Haaretz the earth the world now do you not find that a little bit strange do you not find that just a tiny bit strange that we do not translate the middle word in the seventh fold repetition of God's creation I left half yeah but what does that mean well we don't translate it why not what does it mean I am The Aleph and the TAF who is that it's Jesus now when John who wrote revelation writes his gospel what's the first thing he said in the beginning bill a sheet was the word which word Jesus all things were created by him who are left half you see if you actually take that as Jesus and Jesus says that is him in the beginning I left half God created not just any God Jesus got the word that you'd run translate and that word that word that isn't translated but is there in the beginning that word that created everything that word which is me that word which is all the way through the Bible that you don't even read that's me what did Jesus say the whole of the Scriptures testify of me you read them and you don't know who I am cause she don't know what it means I am The Aleph and the TAV now you can do a whole study on Aleph TAV you could there's entire books written about it but you will find over and over again that word that two letter word that we would translate into Greek alpha or Omega which we don't translate into English but it's there all the time crops up in some very strange places now we can't look at these tonight I just done one example for you can you put up the next slide okay Zechariah 12:10 which we know very well will not read the Hebrew will just stick with the English and they will look upon me the one they have pierced but in the middle of that statement there's another word it says how they will look on they will look on me I left half the one they have pierced but we don't translate the name because we don't know what it means we think it's just a grammatical Hebrew structure pointing to something it's amazing how often that word crops up when Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho when Joshua blew the trumpet it actually says when Joshua blew I left half strumpet when Ruth gets married she's called root root rest half root in Hebrew she's called Ruth all the way through the book when she gets married she's called root I left half now in English she don't translate it it's just she still called Ruth no she's just out another name add it to her name in the Hebrew she's now called Ruth but belongs to a left half find it all the way through the Bible it's incredible so let's go back to revelation then revelation chapter 8 see unless you study ebrill you wouldn't even know about but you can do Studies on it revelation sorry not chapter 8 verse 8 we're in chapter 1 I am The Aleph and the TUF the Alpha the Omega at the beginning and the end the one who is the one who was the one who is to come the one who was there at the beginning the one who created everything the one who's there all the way through the Bible I'm the word that you need to know I'm the word that brings everything into being without him nothing was made that has been made he created all things who did I left half the name okay so in Revelation you'll find this over and over again there's little things chucked in and you just think oh that's nice is the Alpha and the Omega that's just a nice metaphorical way saying is the beginning and the end no it's not it's much deeper than that what you can read it on many different levels okay oh dear we're not doing very good our way we're on we're on verse eight let's go on to verse nine then don't worry we're nearly halfway I'll not go through everything in such detail so that we can get to the end of chapter one I John your brother and companion in the suffering and Kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus was on the island of Patmos because of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus so there's a repeat of what we've just looked at John is there do you know why John is there because of persecution John is being persecuted he according to the traditions they already tried to kill him once but it didn't work according to some of the Apostolic fathers they wrote a tradition that they tried to boil him in a cold room full of oil and he didn't boil he just sung praises to God so they decided to just get rid of him by taking him to the island of Patmos he suffered persecution let's just stress one thing that a lot of people seem to overlook about the book of Revelation revelation is not given to us so we can get out of suffering okay I know that's why most people read it so they can avoid any trouble so we can try and work out what's going to happen so that we can plan our lives but that is not why it is given even John who wrote it suffered persecution there will be much tribulation there will be much persecution everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Paul said to Timothy will suffer persecution in some form that doesn't mean we go through the thing that is called the wrath of God the wrath of God the end time final tribulation that's different but don't think you can get out of trouble in this world Jesus says if you live in this world you're gonna have trouble but in me you'll have peace even John went through this persecution then the next verse chapter 10 on the Lord's Day I was in the spirit and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet right this verse is often misconstrued and given an understanding that is not according to the original text it doesn't mean it was sunday okay what happened later on is the Lord's Day the eighth day where people used to meet became known as what we would call Sunday and so they called that the Lord's Day that isn't what it means it's it's a construct in the way that the word is phrased if I said it another way but still translating it properly it has a totally different meaning I was in the spirit on the day of the Lord that has a totally different meaning if you know your Bible if you know your Bible that means something totally different right John is saying I was in the spirit on the day of the Lord now what's the day of the Lord the day of the Lord is the day that all the prophets spoke about the end of time the final dispensation now every prophet mentions the day of the Lord they all talked about it so we're not going to look at all those let's just look at one of them Joel chapter 2 verse 1 but Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel they talked about something called the day of the Lord what is the day of the Lord do you know what the day of the Lord is blow the trumpet in Zion notice they're both trumpet involved on both occasions blow the trumpet in Zion sound the alarm on my holy hill let all who live in the land tremble for the day of the Lord is coming it is close at hand just read down to get the context a day of darkness and gloom a day of clouds and blackness like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes such as never was in ancient times nor ever will be in ages to come it's the final battle what we might call the end of the world the final annihilation the final destruction now all the prophets prophesied about the day of the Lord it will be a day of darkness and distress it will be day of severe trouble in fact as you read the book of Revelation as the day of the Lord gets to an end two-thirds of mankind gets wiped out everything in the sea gets destroyed all the cities of the earth fall down it's not a good day it's the day of God's wrath it's the day of God's anger it's the day of God's judgment it's a day that's coming so when John saw this day he's saying look I saw the day of the Lord it is all going to happen everything that was prophesied in his gonna happen just as they said exactly as they predicted I saw it I was in the spirit and I saw the day of the Lord so let's understand that John is writing about the fulfillment of all things much of which we can now see coming to pass the prophets when they wrote about it it was just a vision it made no sense to them whatsoever they could never understand the world being destroyed by with bows and arrows and swords how on earth could you destroy the world with the weapons of warfare they had two thousand years ago it was impossible they couldn't comprehend it but they wrote it down because God told them now we can see it the world can be destroyed at the push of a button we know that can happen but yet we believe it less than they did they had to believe it by faith and they believed it we don't even need faith you just watch the news and we know it can happen but yeah we don't believe it that's the paradox of faith it's crazy okay go back to verse 10 then John was in the spirit on the day of the Lord the lord's day that day that they all prophesied about and he heard behind him a voice like a trumpet let me just mention the trumpet a little bit in the Bible especially in the book of Revelation trumpets are very significant about identifying what event is going to happen next okay did you follow that when a trumpet sound is given it was always a signal as to what was going to come next so in the Bible whenever you see a trumpet depending upon what trumpet it is and repent depending on what sound or alarm is played on that trumpet that depends on what's going to happen next so the people of Israel understood what was going to happen tomorrow by what trumpet blast was given the night before yeah you all follow that so it was a prediction of what was going to happen next now if that burglar alarm went off nobody know what were happening with the sovereign outside panicking but if we had a proper fire drill we would know that when that alarm goes off we know what to do next yeah y'all follow me on that I'm in the spirit on the day of the Lord I hear behind me a voice but the voice sounds like a trumpets Joel's prophecy but all the prophets prophesy it was the day of the trumpet okay now if we go to 1 Thessalonians 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 and verse 16 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 and verse 16 for the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a loud command with the voice of the Archangel and with the trumpet call of God the rapture okay a specific sound from the trumpet means that the rapture has come when you hear that trumpet the dead in Christ will rise first okay so we understand that that's one signal the trumpet gives here's where people get confused there's different trumpets in the Bible that there's actually quite a few different ways of blowing trumpets there's lots of trumpets in the Bible actually and they all signify different things now I've got my shofar that I bought in Israel not this time I think it was the time before and this often is what is described as the sound of the trumpet you all want me to blow it don't you yes yeah [Music] okay now in Israel that meant something now there's different signals for different things but actually that's not the trumpet that's the ship far that's the ram's horn which sometimes your Bible will translate as a trumpet that's the Hebrew word shofar the ram's horn as it is translated there's actually another trumpet did you know there's another trumpet in the Bible there's not just a ram's horn trumpet there's another trumpet which in it we hear translated south picks it's not not so far it's another trumpet it's actually another trumpet that signifies the rapture did you know that it's not the chiffon chiffon actually signals judgment the shofar will be blown in Revelation but not at the rapture there will be seven trumpets blown later on there will be the ram's horns blown because that's what happens in Revelation revelation is a reference to the past you know when the ram's horn was blown seven times in the Old Testament the Battle of Jericho what happened when they blew the ram's horn seven times the city collapsed you'll find in Revelation that when the trumpets are blown the nations of the earth collapse and yahushua who were sent in two witnesses to rescue his people from the city it's all a picture of the book of Joshua the RAM son we'll look at that when we get to the blowing of the trumpets later on in Revelation okay but this trumpet if you go to numbers chapter 10 are you are still following me will not get to the end of the chapter I'll stop in a couple of verses and we'll do the rest next time okay if we go to numbers chapter 10 and verse 1 God actually told the people not the ram's horn but there's another trumpet these are called what we call the silver trim it's the Lord said to Moses make two trumpets of hammered silver and use them for calling the community together and for the camps to set out now whatever you see silver in the Old Testament silver is always the metal that means redemption and purchase it's the metal for salvation in fact the Hebrew word for silver is the same Hebrew word for money did you know that he said give us your silver give us your money it's the same it's the same word and so when you see silver it means purchased whenever you see anything silver you bought a slave thirty pieces of silver Jesus will purchase thirty pieces of silver when you buy some one pieces of silver to redeem someone instead of the main sacrifice you had to give a shekel a silver shekel it's a picture of salvation so the silver trumpets their trumpets but they're made of silver they are a sign of salvation when these trumpets are blown they are a picture of our salvation make two trumpets of hammered silver use them for calling the community together and for the camps to set out next verse when Bertha sounded the whole community's to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting next one if only one it sounded the leaders the heads of the clans of Israel you are to us to assemble before you when a trumpet blast is sounded the tribes camping on the east are to set out then the last one is sounded the other ones set out okay basically the silver trumpets are blown at any time you are not given warning the shofar czar blown at very specific preordained times they have atonement to celebrate to announce you know things that God is going to do at the sacrificial giving us bit the silver trumpet can be blown at any moment they weren't given notice when the silver trumpet is blown it's time to leave everyone in Israel who heard the silver trumpet knew they had to leave home and go somewhere else when you hear the trumpet you know it is time to leave earth and go to heaven when you hear the silver trumpet not the chiffon the chiffon is set the shofar to your mouth the ram's horn that's a sign of coming judgment the silver trumpet is a sign of redemption it's a ton it's a time to leave it's also the sign to assemble together okay what in in Greek would be the what was what's called the episode of GOG a where we get the word synagogue from the gathering together of God's people a bit sooner GOG a time to leave time to be gathered together time to move this is the trumpet that John hears here in chapter 1 and he hears it again in chapter 4 when he's caught up into heaven any moment that trumpet can sound there was no preordained warning signal that was the signal if you don't understand what the trumpet sounds like you won't hear it that's why Paul says if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound how all those who hear it know what to do he's talking to the Corinthian church you were all over the place they're all got spiritual gifts they all thought they were brilliant Paul says you don't even know about the second coming you're not even aware of what's happening it's amazing how many churches today don't even have teaching on the second coming despite it making up most of the Bible do you know for every prophecy of Jesus first coming there are eight about his second coming eight eight times more because that refers to eternity so when the Blastoise sounded the the tribes camping on the east are to set out first now tours that doesn't mean much but it always been to Israel with us any of how many people just put your hand high so a bit higher right up so I can see right most people haven't been basically when you go to Israel and you see Jerusalem it's set out like the camp of God you've got the tabernacle in the middle of Jerusalem and then you've got people on each side okay so when the trumpet blast sounds the cat the tribes camping on the east are to set out if you look at Jerusalem and you see where the tabernacle is who lives on the east anybody know nobody lives on the east it's a cemetery when the trumpet sounds who goes first those on the east who's on the east all the dead people it's the biggest cemetery in the world some people think the Mount of Olives it's just one huge Cemetery no one lives on it I mean they live on the top and over the other side not on the east then who goes at the last trumpet everyone else can you see what Paul's talking about at the last trumpet the dead in Christ go first they go at the first trumpet but we don't hear that one we're this last trumpet we're caught up together to meet them and the Lord in the air can you see that that's what Paul's referring to Paul is not talking about the rapture at the trumpets at the last trumpet sounded of the seven trumpets in Revelation no no no that that that is not what he's talking about it can't me because when he wrote to the Thessalonians none of them had read Revelation so they wouldn't have known what that meant anyway but they all knew what the silver trumpets meant when the trumpet blast is sounded the tribes camping on the east are to set out next verse at the sounding of the second blast that caps on the south are set out the blast will be signal for SETI now that's the last trumpet gather to the assembly blow the trumpets but not with the signal for setting out then just go down another couple of verses the sons of Aaron the priests are to blow the trumpets I mean that in itself significant the leaders the spiritual leaders are supposed to blow the trumpet the spiritual leaders are supposed to tell you to get ready to move some churches don't even talk about the Second Coming the some pastors never preach about it some pastors never talk about the the coming of the Lord well they're totally nullifying the very thing they're called to do they're supposed to warn people that we are leaving it's time to set out this is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come don't stop teaching on the second coming just because you don't think it's trendy because if you do when they do hear the trumpet they won't know what it means I am convinced that when the Lord comes to take those to be with him you have to be willing him I don't think he takes you against you will I don't find the Lord ever does that you have to choose to go you will hear a trumpet and you will say yes or no Jesus says it was like the Virgin's that the the bridesmaids when he came they either went or they didn't they made a choice some of them were too busy oh oh because they didn't understand the noise of the trumpet okay so that's the noise of the trumpet it is the time to assemble together yes yes whenever God speaks in the Bible one thing is very clear not everybody hears the same thing when he came down on the mountain what did they hear a loud trumpet blast when he came down and Mount Sinai he read it they said they heard the sound of a loud trumpet that got louder and louder and louder when God speaks not everyone knows what it means when God spoke from heaven to Jesus some just heard thunder well they didn't know what that meant we'll come to that in Revelation because there are seven thunders in Revelation but John was said he couldn't write down what it was which is a very strange thing to do why would he write down that he couldn't write down what it was why did he not just mention it it's like when someone says I bought your present but it's a secret it's like well why don't you just not tell me you've got me a present you've now told me something but not told me I can know what it is we'll come on to that next time anyway I think I've given you enough we're halfway through chapter 1 but I think I've given you enough to be continuing with your own study and to be looking into the book of Revelation so we'll close there
