i'ma get my mouth gets ahead of my mind so as I'm just want to make sure I didn't slip up and say the wrong thing but it's one of those places that we don't mind making the sacrifice or making the time to come because we perceive as much as we give and so I'm grateful for that for all these preachers that are here my big my little sister Reverend shall lead a fun be Reverend or Reverend Terrence Reverend Russ for all of the preachers in the audience for these preachers on the pulpit our worship leader and for all of you my brothers and sisters in Christ to my Maryland friends you don't have to follow you and people certainly don't have to support you and it's just right to say thank you there's a word in Matthew chapter 14 beginning with verse 22 this is your recent revival and we not only believe God can reset our situations but I believe that God can reset our lives and so tonight we want to read from Matthew chapter 14 beginning with verse 22 I'm reading from the New International Version of Scripture you're already spending when you find it's a man if you're still looking said wait a minute Matthew chapter 14 beginning with verse 22 Matthew 14 beginning with verse 22 new testament reading first book in the New Testament amen amen my mentor used to say God doesn't give us brownie points for finding it fast so when all else fails use the table of contents but I met a word Church so I know where you know where it is they man if you dare say I got it alright and I'm reading in the word of the Lord reads as thus immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him somebody say ahead of him to the other side while he dismissed the crowd after he had dismissed them he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray and later that night he was there alone and the boat was already a considerable distance from the land buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it shortly before dawn somebody said before dawn Jesus went out to them walking on the lake when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified it's a ghost they said and cried out in fear but Jesus immediately said to them take courage it is I don't be afraid Lord if is you Peter replied tell me to come to you on the water then Peter got down out of the boat walked on the water and came toward Jesus but when he saw the wind somebody said he saw the wind he was afraid and beginning to sink cried out lord save me immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him you of little faith he said why did you doubt and when they climbed into the boat the wind died down then those who were in the boat worshiped him saying truly you are the son of God this is the word of the Lord the grass withers the flower fades but the word of our God shall stand forever as you take your seat shop my title to your neighbor tell them don't let fear trump your faith look on the other side said don't let fear trump your faith second Corinthians chapter five verse seven makes the declaration that we walk by faith and not by sight the implication of this declaration is that the life of a christian or believer or disciple is comprised of a day-by-day walk whereby we take steps from where we are to the place where God would have us to go this is not just true physically or geographically but it's also true spiritually Hebrews 11 and 8 says that by faith Abraham when called to a place he would let her receive as his inheritance obeyed and went even though he did not know where he was going some of us have walked with the Lord long enough to acknowledge that the Lord has a way of summoning us to make lateral and literal moves I've had members of my congregation share their testimonies about the various geographical moves that they made that they felt were ordained by God they've testified that they were in one city and they heard the Lord tell them to move someplace else and many times their families thought they were losing their mind or they were crazy but they took the step anyway because they believe that their steps were ordered by the Lord so what I'm suggesting is that sometimes God will summon us to make literal moves literally moving geographically it may mean changing a job it may mean moving to another Church like some of you have made a move from a church that you used to attend to attend Kay fain for some it could even mean Jane denominations moving from one denomination to and to the next or making moves to go back to school when you thought you were finished sometimes God has a way of summoning us to make literal and sometimes lateral moves and of course God is always summoning us to go to a new place in Him a new place spiritually the Bible tells us that we go from glory to glory that we go from faith to faith and from strength to strength discipleship and maturity and transformation are some of the hallmarks of a maturing disciple god forbid that we are the same person that we were 10 years ago that we are to today that we were 10 years ago god forbid that we're the same person that we're giving the same offering in 2020 that we were given in 2005 god forbid that we still that we have the same level of maturity at 40 that we have we were 15 come on here god forbid that we are 35 as an adult but acting like a 15 year old emotionally God is always calling us to transformation and maturity and discipleship for these of a hallmark of a maturing disciple so glad that the Lord accepts us the way we are but refuses to leave us the way we came that God has a way of challenging us and summoning us to a cross over to the other side and as much as we would prefer ambiguous certainty to ambiguity the truth of the matter is that there are times when we do decide to follow God to follow God spiritually geographically or physically that we have no idea what God is doing we have no idea where God is taking us or where God is trying to take us or where we're going and we tell the truth and don't try to act like we deep and act like we got God on speed dial you know I know the down to act like that came Fame but there are some people they hear God all day long 24/7 God always telling them something and I'm wondering is God that really that loquacious that God is talking that much some of us are just trying to grope our way through the darkness we're not sure that where we're going we don't know what God is doing God has not bothered to reveal any details and God doesn't bother to give us clear instructions we're going without a map but walking by faith we find is much more complicated than walking by sight it's a lot easier to walk by sight because we have visual data we have the benefit of input from human senses and sound and smell and touch to guide us but walking by faith it's substantially different than walking by sight because there is an entrepreneurial dimension to walking by faith in other words when you walk by faith you become entrepreneurial you you become a pioneer you you do some things that nobody else is willing to do or or to try and you go some places where others are not willing to go the entrepreneurial dimension of faith suggests that faith is summoning us in the words of Jesus to cross over to the other side it is the dimension whereby God calls or bids us to make bold moves to test the limits to think outside of the box and most of all take the limits of God not just to benefit ourselves but for the sake of making a better world to work as Co regions as co-creators with God in reimagining what's possible to think about this great God who has given us and endowed us with power and position that is just a little bit lower than the Angels this summons is not just for me nudging neighbor saying ain't just about you babies ain't just about you but it's about creating co-creating a better world in other words a yes to God is a commitment to live by faith and when we live by faith God has a way of leading us into uncharted territory places where we don't have a road map where we don't have a template we we've tried to figure it out as we go we don't want you to know all the time and we don't know where we're going but we're trying to figure it out as we go even walk like we know where we go in and we whispered to God as we're walking you better show because if you don't show me my fall off a cliff or something but we follow God where God leads us Mary said yes to God she didn't know what the future would hold when she said yes to the angel Gabriel when Paul said yes to God on the Damascus Road and the voice spoke to him from a light shining from heaven and told him that he would suffer many things for Christ's sake and that he would be a messenger to the Gentiles and take the message to the greco-roman world he didn't know exactly what was ahead when we say yes to God God does not always reveal the whole plan we read the Bible and stories of the people who were used by God we discovered that there will be times in our lives that we will be called to follow Christ in ways that don't make sense they don't make sense to us and they don't make sense to the people that are around us at such times we must learn to rely on our faith more than our feelings because while our feelings may be valid they are not always reliable can I come back and get you I say our feelings may be valid but they are not always reliable the Bible doesn't say we walk by feelings and not by sight it says we walk by faith and not by sight and so even when our better judgment but incline us to lean against our own understanding or to our own understanding and our feelings we discover that our feelings may be valid but they're not always accurate reliable or litmus test for what God is trying to do in our lives and so while we may be apprehensive we also learn that God's comprehension or God's wisdom it's so much more comprehensive than our own the Bible is right God knows the end from the beginning dr. Howard Thurman was right when he said there is a divinity that shapes our ends we see this time and time again in Scripture when God called Abram to leave everything that he would have and follow him to a place that he would show him a place of great potential a place of great promise but all Abraham had was God's Word to guide it that's a good place for me to pause parenthetically and say that the Word of God is enough to guide you I need somebody to know that God's Word sometimes that's all you got but the word is enough to guide you when you really don't know where you're going I wish I had a few people that believe that the word still has power that the word can still give you what you need when you got God's Word you got enough to guide you we see it in the disciples when they came in contact with Jesus and Jesus said follow me and I'll make you fishers of men the Bible said that they dropped their nets immediately and they followed Jesus the text doesn't tell us that they went home to talk it over with their families or with their spouses they didn't go home in the pack they didn't go to try to check and see what ship they could get out they didn't go to consult anyone they dropped their nets these were businessmen they left their business livelihood and family and follow Jesus at his word something about Jesus was so compelling something about his ministry was so compelling that the first disciples did not hesitate to follow Jesus they didn't even ask any question they responded immediately they didn't take time to get their affairs in order to self find out who would take care of their families and everyone they were leaving behind they dropped their nets and they followed Jesus I'm saying all this to say that faith can be and is a powerful motivator can you just tell your neighbor that faith is a powerful motivator faith will motivate us to take some risks that we wouldn't necessarily take faith will lead us and summon us to some places that we had no intention of going and according to the text Peter one of Jesus star pupils and disciples was so motivated by faith that one night in the middle of a storm is in the text in the middle of a storm it's a bad shot in the middle of the storm we took my half faith I motivate you in the middle of the storm Peter came up with a great idea because of what he saw Jesus doing but he could walk on water Peter in the midst of a storm decided motivated by faith that he could do what faith often summons us to do to do the unconventional to do something he had never done before to defy the laws of physics and walk on water I'm not talking when the Sun was shining I'm not talking about walking in skis or stepping into some skis or heaven some ropes to help guide him across the water but Peter was so motivated by faith that he made the decision and discovered or came to the conclusion that he could do what Jesus did that he could defy the law of physics based on what he had seen Jesus do and walk on water and I want to argue tonight that faith will provoke us and motivate us faith will provoke us and motivate us to do some things that we have never done before Peter by faith in Jesus word decided to walk on water so much so that he didn't just walk on water now be clear that he was not the only one in the boat but he was the only one god help me that decided he could walk on water which suggests to me that if you're gonna heat the summons to go where Jesus is calling you to go sometimes you're gonna leave some folk behind can you just preach to somebody and tell them if you gonna get out the boat there's some folk that you're gonna leave behind these are the same disciples that have seen Jesus heal the sick raise the dead give sight to the blind feed the multitude and they saw the same thing that Jesus saw but out of all the disciples that were in the boat Jesus was the only one who had the Creator was the only one who had the courage to get out of the boat and walk on choppy waters in a raging storm that's the best of faith to make you do some crazy stuff faithful to make you try some things that other people would just stand back and scratch they're here Saints will make you try some things that others will stand back and wait for the outcome and they will withhold their conclusions and their commentary because they want to see whether you're gonna sink or swim but I stopped by to tell you that the only confirmation you need is a confirmation from Jesus to walk out on water see the problem with many of us we're looking for confirmation from their own folk looking for confirmation for don't go nowhere ain't done nothing ain't tried nothing ain't trying to do nothing they just sitting about watching the tide roll in but when you get ready to do something different the only confirmation you need is a confirmation from Jesus faith motivated Peter in such a way that he decided that he could do what Jesus did that he could do the unconventional in the middle of a storm choppy waters the waves were against it the text says that the waves were against it and the strong winds prohibited much progress I hope you see in your sanctified imagination the intensity of this storm because these are not novice fishermen who are afraid of this storm that they're in these are men that have made their living on the water and it suggests to us just what a real the risk that Peter was taking when he decided to step out of the boat because they were already scared in the boat but when Peters saw Jesus even the most seasoned fisherman we're feeling uneasy during the nature of the storm but when Jesus showed up at an unlikely time in an unlikely place some of you know that Jesus will show up at an unlikely time at a very unlikely but he shows up at 3 o'clock in the morning walking close to what I'm trying not to give to him but when I think about how he shows up in some of the most unlikely times and some of the most unlikely places just when I need him most he shows up in the middle of the storm walking on the water and even though they initially thought that Jesus was a ghost when Peter saw him he's when he's not only see somebody hears his voice touching neighbors say you need to learn how to hear and read cuz sometimes you might not have a word sometimes you better learn you got to learn how to know his voice it's one thing to know his word but when you ain't got access to the word you might be in the vortex of a storm and the best way that you can discern what God is trying to tell you is that because you got your Bible with you but because you got a word down in your heart so that you might not sin against God is good to know his word but it's also good to know his voice you are half out somebody saying you better learn his noise you better learn his voice Peter didn't get a scripture he didn't get a word from the Torah he said master if he/she tell me to join you out there on the water and Jesus bids Peter to come and Peter gets out the boat walks on water and does something that he's never done before no it's about telling faith I make you do some things that you've never done before come on talk to somebody else and tell him faithful calls you to try some stuff that you've never tried before tell somebody else behind your faith what caused you to try something you eat even got experience in he didn't have no experience walking on water he didn't know nothing about defying the law of physics but he heard Jesus come and he does something that he has never done before I want to argue that they're in it not how faith works faith will challenge us faith will motivate us faith will cause us to resist the status quo faith will cause us to travel and we've never done before Peter recognized that when he saw Jesus walking on the water that this was an extraordinary opportunity to spiritual adventure and growth is sometimes Jesus calls us to new places to help us grow not just the adventure but to help us grow touch your neighbors ain't nothing wrong with growing huh deliver me from people that don't want to grow deliver me from people that don't want to try nothing new deliver me from people that satisfied being satisfied deliver me from Negroes that don't want to do nothing don't wanna go nowhere don't want to try nothing you ought to walk to grow you ought to want to be your best self for Jesus you ought to want to be looking for ever-increasing glory Peter recognized that this was an opportunity to experience Jesus in another dimension because that's what faith will do faith will motivate us to make bold moves faith but motivate us to do some things that we don't even have experience is some of us may be considering making some moves and taken some actions that you know had to be prompted by faith touch your neighbor says she sho got their bright of us are doing some things we know it wedding ideas it was God's idea we wouldn't even be doing that we wouldn't even be thinking about it we wouldn't be staying up at night we wouldn't be praying and fasting if it hadn't been God's idea some of you have already taken some bold steps that you know it had to be the Lord telling you to do it you wouldn't have never done this on your own you know you couldn't even think of it on your own it had to be the Lord telling you to do it you felt inadequate you felt unsure you felt apprehensive you had a fear of failure but faith provided the motivation can you just tell somebody faith provides the motivation I didn't have no money but I had some things I didn't have the right connections but I had faith I didn't know the right folks but I had didn't even know what I was doing but faith provided the motivation to get me to do what I never done before to venture into uncharted territory Peter did something he never done before he got out of the boat and walked on water he got his confirmation from Jesus Peter was the only one who was inspired enough motivated enough by faith then he got out the boat but here's the piece after getting at the boat after walking on the water after defying the law of physics the tech says he saw the win when I read that I said how did you see when when is invisible he saw the wind he didn't see the wind literally but he saw the effects of the wind he saw the threat that the wind posed and the waves posed and fear took over the conversation what happens when fear takes over your conversation what happens when fear begins to tell you what you cannot do what you ain't got no business doing what people that come from your background ain't supposed to be doing what you have don't have the abilities or the skill sets to do what happens when fear takes over the conversation fear told Peter he had no business walking on water fear told people Peter that he couldn't handle the trends in the law of physics that he had already done the hard part no somebody said you know I read done a hot pot you didn't already walked on what you do not refers them all you didn't get at the boat that's the first thing and then secondly because Jesus was there Jesus helped you to do something that you could not do before but you slowed down long enough you got distracted long enough touch your neighbors they watch them distractions you gotta watch them distractions that when cane there's a distraction and fear began to have a conversation with him to tell them he had no business walking on the water in spite of the fact that Jesus was still there Jesus had not gone AWOL Jesus was out there on the water with Peter and when he began to surrender to fear he lost his footing and he began to sink he's defied the law of physics he's walked on the water Jesus tells him to come Jesus is there Peter sees the wind and he begins to sink remember why Allah God gave me a fresh insight about this text and an important truth for anybody who's motivated by faith to know or experience the Lord in another dimension for anybody whose faith has motivated them to take the leap into uncharted territory Peter is an example of what can happen when fear Trump's face I know that in a good word in this environment considering everything that's going on but fear can trump your faith card players in the room know what trump means whether you're playing spade or bid Wiz but since fate is the game I know you know I love to play spade I'd like to talk all kind of trash you know for putting cards on their heads slapping the cards down on it I'm one of them can I talk so much trash that I can't finish eating before I get it the table being my partner are we going whooping how we gonna beat somebody in his head y'all gonna get ready to rise and fly some of us know about Spain since pain is what I know let me talk Spade this Trump suite is special and it beats every other suite no matter what the card is or the card value the holder of the Spade can beat the club they can beat the diamond it can beat the heart and can win in in in particular I just make sure you don't play the wrong card make sure that you don't let the card walk touch your neighbors and be careful that you don't let it walk if you make sure you're playing it too right there don't walk too soon touch your neighbor so don't walk too soon you know you don't want to mess up but just in case you don't have anything and your Trump tight-ass bacon Trump just about any card cuz the trump card always wins it's the nature of the trump card to win it it wins every single time I want to suggest that there are times when fear works like a trump card works like a trump card because fear is one of the things that can trump your faith and I want to argue tonight at this reset revival his fear is that fear is one of the enemy's trump cards fear is a curious and powerful emotion it can be powerful motivator it is an elemental alarm system of the human organism it can be a useful emotion when it leads to appropriate action and caution and measures that guard one's welfare dr. Martin Luther King said that fear is a powerful a creative force it the fear of ignorance led to education the fear of darkness led to the discovery of electricity kings and the fear of led to the marvelous advances in medical science the fear of ignorance led to the building of learning institutions and the fear of war was one of the forces behind the birth of the United Nations we by Allah burglar longs for our houses because of the fear of home invasions fear can be a powerful motivator every saving invention every intellectual advance had behind it a motivation or desire to avoid or escape some dratted thing fear can be a powerful motivator because it can set us on a path to action while I can say that fear can be a powerful motivator it's a terrible master tell somebody it's a terrible master fear can be a powerful motivator but it's also a terrible master fear can stop our minds fear can shut our mouths fear can say stay our hand fear will keep us from taking risks and be an effective fear can be an hindrance to the enjoyment of life if it is induced by delusion or if it lingers or overpowers more dangerous emotions it can paralyze us from making decisions it can lend itself to the inability to engage in the normal activities of life so while fear can be a powerful motivator it's a terrible master it can be ruinous and destructive it can hold us hostage to an unprofitable path and robbed us of the potential of our future it can paralyze us from moving forward it can hold us back from moving into our destiny and leaving us with nothing but regret fear can hold us back from loving again from trusting again from trying again from dreaming again from trying to start all over again when fear is our master it has the potential to rob us of some of the greatest victories in our life and some of the greatest financial blessings in our lives and some of the most fulfilling relationships I want to argue tonight that fear is the devil's primary weapon it's his trump card it's it's the spiritual force that begins in of us and has the potential to be totally destructive and rob us of our activity and agility and create it us a type of inertia that keeps us from moving forward it keeps us in a state of neutral so that we really don't know what to do it robs us of our faith in our peace it keeps us focused on circumstances rather than focusing on what God said the enemy will instill fear by challenging the promises of God what I'm really trying to tell you as that fear will keep you from winning just about in fear keep you from winning fear would not only keep you from winning it'll keep you from stepping out on faith it'll keep you from trying something new it'll keep you from acting on the vision or the dream that God has given you dr. William H Curtis says that fear attempts to meet faith at the intersection of real spiritual courage and force doubt into the one pondering of faithful future fear offense unbelief they kept the nation of Israel from entering the promised land fear is what caused the nation of Egypt to panic when they left the land of Egypt only to discover that Pharaoh's army was behind them and they wanted to retreat and go back to Egypt and fear is what caused Peter to sink when he saw the wind fear is the enemy's trump card how many people do you know have missed out on opportunities not because they were incompetent not because they were unattainable or impossible but because they were afraid of whether it could truly be done they were afraid of whether it could really happen to them and their fear of failure led them to believe that they would be crushed permanently for even having the audacity to believe that they could do something at that level we don't have to talk about other people think about your own life think about how much you've held back and how much you've been held up and what you have missed and what you have worked set out on because you didn't know how to answer fear when fear decided to have a conversation with you but I need to tell somebody if fear doesn't deserve an explanation if you've gotten a confirmation from Jesus you best bet is to keep moving forward until God gives you deliverance and until you see manifestation so what I'm suggesting to you tonight is that while fear has the potential to trump faith and while there is a place for healthy fear in our lives the moment we allow fear into our spiritual dimension our spiritual life and zone we run the risk of a lot of arriving too late to secure our potential and somebody else benefits from the effort that you've already invested look at some bats that remember you already did the hard part but I'm so glad that fear doesn't Trump faith because I stopped by to tell you that in the game of faith there is another car that can trump a space somebody shout another car you see some folks don't like to play with these cards some people some people like to play Spade with just the space but I'm one of these Negroes that likes to play with the other two cards and the other two cards are the cards that sneak up the hand that somebody said I'll sneak up behind oh if you've ever been in a game with somebody thought they were getting ready to whoop you they thought you didn't have anything in your hand because you weren't able to get any books but did they slap those two cards down and you slept that big Joker and that little Joker on the table can I tell you that faith is a big Joker can you preach to your neighbor and tell them faith is a big Joker it over outer space it over right just about anything a club it'll override everything a car a heart and a dime of faith can trump fear I stopped by to tell you that Jesus had an amazing insight into the tragic and ominous effects that can flow forth from fear and so Jesus provides the solution Reverend Watling to Peter before he gets out the boat you see in verse 27 Jesus says to Peter and the disciples when they thought he was a ghost he says to them take courage it is I you don't have to be afraid I stopped by to tell you why faith is a trump card I stopped by to tell you that faith is a trump card when you step into uncharted territory because some of us are under the illusion that because God calls us into new places that we will never encounter winds or stones but the shout is not that I won't have a storm the shout is that as long as Jesus is with me I can succeed in a place where I should've drowned oh I feel my help now can you preach to your neighbor and tell him as long as Jesus is with me I can succeed in a place that I should have drowned I'm talking to the people that can't swim I'm talking to the people that didn't have a lifejacket I'm talking to the people that didn't know where you were going you were blind crippled and didn't know what God was up to but you oughta have found somebody and tell them that as long as Jesus is with me I can succeed in a place that I should have drowned can you help me shut this thing down and grab your neighbors hand and put a smile on your face and tell them don't let fear drop your faith but let face drop your fear and the reason why is because Jesus is with me and when Jesus is with me I can accomplish anything I can survive anything I can write a book I can score a film I can start a church I can start a ministry I can finish a degree I can do whatever God says I can do when Jesus is with me tell somebody don't let fear drop your faith but let your faith trump your fear but not only is Jesus with me I love somebody and tell them Jesus says I got you so I woke up in the midst of trouble that will revive me thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of my enemy perhaps that's why Jesus says but the Shepherd says that even though I woke up to the valley of the shadow of death I'll fear no evil for thou art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me and now prepare is them wanna do it for you a table before me in the presence of my enemies can you hop on somebody and encourage your neighbor and tell them don't let fear drop your faith but let favor drop your fear babies that can move mountains faith that cause walls to tumble faith that trumps morality trade that trumps ethnicity faith that trumps my past say that Trump's my mistakes faith that Trump's my inadequacy faith that Trump's my morality and because faith is my trump card tell somebody I can still win I can still run to truth and leap over walls because if God be for me come on is celebrate he's more that know where Allah gives me grab somebody's hand and preach like as your last time tell them you've already done the hard part you've already got nap the boat you've already see God do great things don't let fear drop your faith but
