we've all seen the amazing movies by pixar animation studios and how incredible the rendering technology is from the way the amazing render engine interprets lights materials colors and so on with an unprecedented production value it is safe to say that renderman is extremely reliable for producing high quality visuals with a consistent picture quality and with the release of renderman 24 for blender the power of creating high quality production visuals is now in the hands of the world's most popular open source 3d content creators and as someone who consistently tests rendering engines for blender it is actually interesting to see how easy it is for you to set up the renderman engine and also work with the blender adam to actually get started with renderman once you're done with the installation process is as simple as right clicking and click on use renderman now this is one of the most easiest ways of getting into a rendering engine that have found for blender contrary to fiddling around the render properties section and trying to figure out how to set up a rendering engine so with that ready go over to your viewport rendering and then you can see renderman in action now this is very very nice now there's a couple of things that renderman brings to the table that you probably wouldn't see with any other rendering engine for blender now we're going to explore more of these and also talk about the cool presets the light linking the light groups and even way more stuff that you can get so with a brand new scene loaded up right here let's take a look at some of the things that impressed me the first time i opened renderman for blender so for you to actually see what your rendering is going to look like directly on your viewport you need to right click go over to the renderman render ipr now this way you can preview what your final render is going to look like directly in your viewport and from here you can start making some final tweaks now in terms of light you need to convert your light to renderman light for you to have these things working so add the renderman node to this and then you can increase the intensity and also the exposure depending on what you want now in terms of interactivity during your render time you can make multiple copies of light move them around your viewport and get some very interesting stuff by the way there's a whole lot of lights that you can also have access to if you go over to renderman section go over to light you can see all of these beautiful lights and in terms of filters you can also attach a couple of light filters depending on what you want to create but now let's talk about even more interesting stuff for this example i'm just going to select this and change this light to a given color select these are the lights and then increase this by 20 just to make sure that we have more light coming from there actually let's make that 25 now if you don't want to go back and forth tweaking this light renderman has provided you with something even way cooler that you can use so if you just simply right click and go over to the render man context menu you'll notice that we have the light mixer group now within the light mixer group you can go over to light mixer editor and from here you can start editing and mixing your lights how you want so i can click on the plus sign click down add the lights that you want click on the plus sign to add them so if we like to add all of this just to set up a light group we can easily do this now with your light group here you can proceed to do all of the tweaks and changes that you like so in this case if we like to turn off some of these lights we can obviously go ahead and turn this off and you can see that happening and by the way you can also create different light groups depending on how you would like to render your model now this makes it way easier for lighting artists to harness the power of renderman and create and also edit their lights the way they choose despite the fact that you have your light mixer there is also a light link in a detail so you like linking a detail you can do even way more cooler stuff so in this case let's say we have this light and i wouldn't want this light to affect setting parts of our model if i click on the drop down button i can select the lights which i want click on the plus sign to add it within the object section we'll click on the drop down select the object that we want and also click on the plus sign to add that as well so at this point we can now choose if we want our light to illuminate or not illuminate the object the number of objects you can throw in is as much as you have within your scene and the number of lights that you can use to control the lighting is also dependent on the number of lights you have within your scene renderman also comes with some impressive material presets that would save you tremendous time instead of thinking about how to make the shaders how to calculate these things and how to tweak them to actually get something happening all you need to do is select the object which you like to apply material to right click go over to where you have your preset then then you can either open the preset browser or you can select from a truckload of categories that exist and in this case let's say we like to give a wooden sort of material to this all we need to do is right click go all the way to presets open up the preset browser and then we can search for wood so if we take a look at the wood section we can find the kind of wood that we want so in this case i'm just going to go ahead and select the oak wood click on the drop down button and click on import and assign to select it and once this is done you can click on ok and automatically you will notice that you have it right here now despite the fact that you have access to materials you also have access to a couple of environments that randomize ships with so just in case you're thinking about some environments that you can use you have a couple that you can play with so you can just go ahead and throw this in and get some very impressive rendering happening now while we're still on the topic of textures and how you can work with materials you can now easily convert your cycle shaders to renderman and how you can do this is extremely simple select the object go over to your material properties and then you can convert your cycles shader to renderman now you can do this for individual objects or you can simply click on convert all cycles to render man and this would convert all of the cycles shaders that you have within your scene to render man despite all of these things they've looked at there are setting utilities and tools that impressed me the first time i tried the renderman for blender so right over here you'll be able to find the scale resolution now with this you can drop down the resolution within your viewport rendering so depending on your computer performance these can come in extremely handy there's also a very cool interactive refinement feature that also exists here so you can choose from zero all the way down and of course there is also the edit crop window with a decrypt window you can edit refine and also preview a specific area of your model and do some very nice loop depth to just that specific path as you can focus on a given area at one time there is a snapshot feature that renderman also offers and this allows you to make render snaps directly in blender for comparison snapshots can be previewed in the image viewer and this is a very handy feature that allows you to make informed decisions on lighting looks and also staging now we've seen some amazing things that render man can do let's talk about something even more impressive renderman ships with an end panel with your renderman and panel you can do a lot of things instead of right clicking going over to your properties you can play with the preset browser directly from the end panel you can start and stop your interactive preview rendering you can add cameras lock the cameras preview these cameras within your viewport make these cameras visible within your viewport or within the rendering time set your depth of field set the distance as much as you want play with lights add different kinds of light filters and you can even play with the light editors you may also want to take a look at one of my personal favorite and that is the renderman live statistics so this is just super awesome you can check out the diagnostics and see how much memory is being used the rays that have been fired per second the first ray the first pixel and also your first iteration now if you take a look at the top left corner of your screen you would also notice that we have the very same statistics running right there it is very interesting to see that renderman for blender checks most of the features blender artists would need to make high quality production visuals so if there's any blender artists looking for a wonderful free rendering tool that they can use renderman for blender is here with all of these features and how you choose to wield the power of this amazing tool is totally up to you
