welcome back to the credible Dev YouTube channel today we're going to be taking a look at my favorite remote desktop management software that I use on Linux the reason why we're going to be talking about that is a lot of the recent videos that I've been making have been related to the Windows Server home lab and with those windows servers we want to be able to remotely connect to those and what better way than using a remote desktop management tool such as Rina before I get into that I just want to say thank you to all the new subscribers I really appreciate it you helping me grow this channel it's been a lot of fun so far and I hope to continue doing it and creating content that you all enjoy if you do enjoy this video and want to see more like it be sure to hit that like button on the video subscribe to my channel if there's a video topic you would like to see me make a video about please leave a comment down below and I'll try to do that for you so let's go ahead and jump into it we have Ramina which which is like I said a remote desktop management tool for Linux which you can get through flat pack a lot of the package managers for various Linux distributions will have this in the repository as well if you want to get it that way I prefer the flat pack version due to some compatibility issues sometimes you might have problems not necessarily connecting to a Windows uh virtual machine or remote desktop for that matter it doesn't necessarily have to be a virtual uh machine uh you might have some issues with audio uh pass through and and things like that and by using the flat pack version you kind of ensure that you get all the necessary dependencies kind of wrapped into it so it just makes it simpler but you can get it however you wish I choose the flat pack version so if we take a look at Ramina I pull it up here on my desktop so you can see it uh when you start adding and you can add other things other than remote desktop by the way I just generally use it only for remote desktop I'll use other tools for SSH for instance but uh you would just choose RDP and then you fill out the details like the IP address or host name your username password stuff like that it's pretty straightforward but there are some additional capabilities which is what I really wanted to show you here today because there are certain things I do with this tool that just make life easier when using remote desktop so one of those things is audio pass through and I'm referring to getting the audio from the Windows device so imagine you connect to the Windows device using Rina and you play a YouTube video inside of that Windows device you want to be able to hear that audio Ramina can help you with that and I should also mention that there are command line tools and and other tools that exist that can do this Ramina just makes it very easy I believe under the hood Ramina is using xfree RDP so you could achieve the these same things from the command line if you wanted and didn't want to use a tool like Rina by the way we'll edit this one and so that way you can see what's going on in here so we have um the IP address of the virtual machine we have a username and password uh up here at the top this is how you want it to be shown here it it doesn't have to be the name of the actual like the host name of the device you can make this whatever you want the group here that have workstations that's what creates these folders here so when you start adding these they'll just be added in a list and they won't be broken up into folders you can change that by adding a group here you can also put labels on them and you see here I have a shared folder so what this is doing is is taking my home folder on the Linux machine that I'm on right now and it's mapping that to this Linux home folder on the Windows device which I'll show show you here in a moment once we connect to one of them other things that you can do in the Advan tab uh is the audio output so if you want to get the audio from the Windows device and you want to Output it onto your local device like your Linux machine then you just choose from this drop down local by default it's off so you would have to change this but if you if you want to be able to take advantage of it just choose local and remote is going to be the opposite of that you can also choose the quality setting uh there's other settings here for like TLS and security uh if you scroll on down there's a bunch of other settings that I don't use at all but you could configure a program that starts up whenever you connect to it um lots of different stuff here with printers and certificates um you can turn off the clipboard sync if you don't want to be able to uh you know hit control C to copy something on your Linux machine and paste it into the remote desktop session that you have open but the things that I use mostly are this audio output mode and the share folder those come in handy quite a bit so let's go ahead and connect to it and see what it looks like so we're actually going to connect to this [Music] one and we'll see it unlocks the computer and then takes me to the desktop so I already had a session open on this one so I just rejoin the session that I already had open and this is a Windows 10 virtual machine here you can see that Linux home redirected drive or folder if we go into that we'll actually see the contents of my home folder for my user on the Linux device so I can easily copy and I can just drag around files that I need which is generally what I use it for is like when I record these videos I do some editing in Windows I used to use Kaden live a lot and I've kind of shifted uh to Adobe Premiere I've been playing around with da Vinci too but I haven't quite got the hang of it yet so to use Adobe Premiere I need a Windows device so that's basically what I use this device for at this point along with a few other tasks related to uh C programming with Visual Studio I do some of that in here as well and it just makes it real easy to be able to transfer files and for the audio part of it here I have a YouTube video pulled up uh some ordinary gamers if you haven't heard of his channel you should go check it out I enjoy the majority of his content I watch most of what he uploads so if you haven't checked him out be sure to check him out and uh if I play this video let me unmute my desktop audio so you can hear that this works so this is inside the Windows 10 uh remote desktop session if I hit play we should hear the desk hear the audio from the YouTube video honestly I just kind of at this point in my life go we can hear him just fine so that audio is passing from the Windows device into our Linux device so then we can hear it there and it could be useful for other things as well uh but you can pass through USB devices which I haven't played with as much myself I haven't really had a need for that but that's something that you can do so all very simple when you use Rina now this window there's some things about it too uh we can resize this window here if I can get my mouse to cooperate with me we can resize this and you can see that it automatically adjusted to that um sometimes you get a little glitchiness I think some of that is due to the scaling that I have on this monitor that causes that uh but uh you can easily do that and in order for that to work you need to click this box over here for dynamic resolution update so the first time you connect this box is not going to be checked so you need to make sure you check that so that you get that functionality so if I turn that off and then we come down here and we resize this again it's not going to update so to get that to update we just click this box and there's some other things here with like multim monitor that you might want to play around with I've never used it myself um you can use this in full screen as well um you can take screenshots um what other tools we can send control delete which can be handy we can send other keystrokes things to it um we can change this to view only so that way me interacting on it is not going to affect the machine that can be really handy when you're trying to help somebody remotely you don't want your mouse to interact with their desktop all the time possibly so you might want to um turn that on and then we also can block shortcuts from being able to pass through to this so like your super key maybe you don't want it to open up up the U the um start menu here stuff like that uh like I said there's quite a bit of things you can do here um so I definitely recommend this as a remote desktop manager solution for you on Linux especially if you're folling along with that series that I currently have going if you haven't checked that out be sure to check that out as well if you're interested in Microsoft Windows Server home lab and active directory in tune and all sorts of things that we're going to get into there so that's all I got for you today if you have any questions or anything leave a comment down below if you enjoyed this video or it helped you out be sure to hit that like button and subscribe to my channel thanks again I hope everybody has a great week
