[Music] all right let's talk reels in real speed and let's just get down to some real talk on that because a lot of people ask me you know questions about what speed reels i fish and you know i got to think about it you know and i never hear anybody talk about the real reason why you you know like for me i don't use a lot of high speed reels period and somebody was like well i don't understand why so i thought you know it's never really talked about but we're going to break it down on why why necessarily faster is not better uh i read somebody's post the other day and it said you know muddy water big baits and fast reels flipping uh no no no i know can i get the point across to you no uh when you put a higher gear reel in your hand and i mean there's companies right now which are trying to make 10 0's and 9 to 0's and 8 5 to 0's and people's like what would you do with an eight five to o real vibe doc put it on the shelf because i'm not gonna fish with it i rarely fish with a seven 7-3 let me explain it to you from a perspective of a car when you drag race to create power and low-end torque you go with a lower geared car so the lower the gears the more torque you could create out of the hole so faster you take off if you're a nascar and you want to run 200 miles an hour you run high gear but you have very little low end torque see where i'm going with this so like my flipping stick right here i said that's a bb one lose six eight to one six eight like i see guys flipping braid and they got eight eight 0 to one reels you have no power when you set the hook i don't care i don't care i don't care you can't turn the handle because it doesn't have the gears too big it takes more first force to turn the handle that's why i like when you're trying to throw a giant crankbait on a seven to one reel or something like man i can't hardly turn the handle it's because you've got no low end power that's why you crank with a five six or a five three or a five one but flipping with an a-o reel makes zero sense because when you flip it in the mat and you jerk everything for if you'll notice it's gonna feel like a giant because you can't turn them because you can't reel you naturally when you set the hook you start really you start to reel when you fish in a super high speed reel and you jerk it just freezes you can't do anything you make a long cast with a frog across a mat you see somebody throwing an 8-0 reel and just giant blow up on it and they jerk they just handcuff right there because you can't turn that fish you can't automatically winch it in so i know that there's people's like i got my theories well that's basic 101 physics the lower the gear the more torque people say well got to take the slack up got to take the slack up a lot of slacking line comes from bad habits where the rod tips at the cast you made position of your feet and your body yeah are you going to get handicapped like you like like caught up sometime like where people say well i'm han i'm hand-tied i can't do anything with it can't do anything with it yeah there's going to be a few chances out there you may have one knock slack in you got to reel real fast but nine times out of ten you're gonna lose more fish on a high speed reel if you're having trouble with a frog and flipping and think about this how many people flip maps and say man i lose a lot of fish in their maps i just can't seem to get them out try dropping down your gear ratio drop back to six six six eight to one like myself there that bb one six eight one seems to be a pretty good reel for me a lot of low end torque i could move that fish immediately but i'm throwing a frog never do i throw a high speed reel swim jig never because you don't want to lose your power on any of your cash you want to be able to reel the fish and move it so if you're having trouble connecting try it you got nothing to lose i'm just it's just basic math that the lower the gear the more torque you have the more you can move and when you're trying to move a six pounder out of a brush pile or a big mat or a long cast on a buzz bait you need a little low end torque and i know people say i won't throw a buzzbait on eight to one why i've never seen a bass with nitrous i don't think he's gonna hit that second kit scoot out there and eat your bait you can look fine with a six five six six six eight so just that's my theory uh you know when you look at gears and the dynamics of it that's just how it is hope that helps a lot of people ask my favorite ratios or five six to one on cranking six eight to one on pretty much everything else yeah i might throw a few baits a jerkbait or something like that on a seven three or 75 but very seldom i'm a six eight kind of guy and a five six to five four so i hope that clears it up if you're losing fishing mats throwing a frog long cash you feel like you ain't getting no leverage on drop down your gear ratio and see if it don't help
