don't just hug back three some feet [Music] every two weeks 60 young men embark on the longest most grueling military training regime in the world this is limp stone the one base that trains every member of the Navy's elite fighting force that's army but even want me to be a month each realistically Marines lose their lives in service the recruits are taught by serving Marines it's not human fresh from fighting in Afghanistan we're here did not kiss a civilian mentality out on this military head on them and say yes I would go to our without blow next to me well it was up damn you go marks you look [ __ ] this is the Royal Marines as you've never seen them before it's just mental you're just completely stepping into the unknown a third won't leak is come up every time we lose someone we rubber out but for those who succeed a new life awaits congratulations all of them and with your pod and your pants is in purple testicles somewhere yeah and take a grip this is what it takes to be a Royal Marines commando [Music] oh damn all right hi it's week 30 oh and after seven months of training the recruits of 169 troop are only two weeks away from getting their Green Berets if they can pass their final tests they are commandos the last step before leaving as trend Marines just shaping our day today the recruits are given their Green Berets to shape for a few hours in case they make it through to the end you've gotta get it so fit for then you don't want to touch it because you don't earn the right to wear it yeah but then you've got on your head you can't touch it go you'll immediately be cursed with like injury or whatever the training team let's throw like they'll throw them out here to see how you react and then if one if you touch one all the lads like you've touched one us there he fails you gonna fail some of my friends back home are like why is it important to get your green beret it's like you want to be part of like the elite in part of the best so that's why you here not that slacking off the army but not you've not joined an army you've joined to do a specific role while they're made for the next 45 minutes or so when we're looking at the commando phase a training standing between the recruits in their Green Berets or the Royal Marines for iconic commando tests the toughest tests in British infantry training okay the bottom line is your body is gonna be pushed harder than ever before in training okay and that's not an exaggeration the initial test must be completed in just five days and are designed to push recruits to the absolute limit who fails them out it's quite a simple policy on that one lads okay we don't have the time and inclination okay to keep pushing blows through lots and lots of tests the cause built on its reputation and it's so easy to lose that reputation you know and if we lose that reputation well we're just another infantry unit we're not gonna be that we can't be that otherwise what's the point of the call if I joined he I was a hairdresser my main thing being if my scissors are sharp enough I've got all the tests passed the first time it does seem impossible when you first come here doing all them tests in a week everybody here will hit a wall at some stage I promise you everyone here will hit a wall okay probably when you least expect it it's a whole different level because you know if you fail this you're out the troop at the last physical point of getting out the troop just remind yourself what you're gonna be dig out blind right if you've got nothing for me that is it meant [Music] what's going on at my review today when I write out really well 23 year old Ben Lyon has been part of 169 troupe from the very beginning so I have another major [ __ ] up since the valar and while working towards his green beret he's also been organizing his wedding we're planning to get married in April so that's Pimentel getting phone calls and random messages about confetti and advice and stuff like that while trying to all this it's a bit mental we'll get that money off me on Friday so stressful but it arises you have to pay somebody for like a church and stuff like that okay I love you too bye she must find it hard then you've been here it's just good days and bad days like some day she's like I'm really proud of you and then we'll have an argument and she's like I hate you I hate you believe in but you know it's part of it I reckon she's expecting some sort of extravagant ballgown dance yeah you know how did that do I [ __ ] I've seen him dance he goes I guess that's it sorrow is either that all of hip action through stink dick I want as many lads as they as possible you have been living with them now almost come at eight months I've got some good friends in there tell me best moves with the lady yeah on Callahan oh it's romantic [Music] she's like you're not rearranging the wedding you will pass out on that on that day I'm not postponing the wedding I'm thinking [ __ ] if I if I don't pass I've got a ring and be like yeah I need to change the wedding [Music] okay first commando test I will pass just 19 out of the original 44 members of 169 troop have survived the last seven months of training now their first the four final pass or fail tests recruits must get through to become Royal Marines you go with training and all this at the end is this 4-bit command their test put it's both this week then yes Oh get yourselves a limp stun yes I wanna be here any longer to you three - what color come on man let's go the first test there must still is the grueling endurance course it's water obstacles and tunnel obstacles let's go driving and then a four mile run back to limp Stern with 21 pounds your weapon which you then load with ammunition you have to fire six out of ten shots on target at 25 meters remember take charge your weapons you must be combat effective at the end of this courses [ __ ] all the dirty grams just taking a great going straight the sheep dip I guess people just worry about cuz it is a fully submerged underwater tunnel you relying on to your mates to push you in and drag you out if you don't like confined spaces then you kind of screwed really come on go propose yourself let's go use them go through it come on Go Go push it push it okay I was done there a new one on me he just went into the tunnel and reversed back out the same way I don't know he bottled it with the endurance course finished the recruits must prove they have kept their rifle in working condition they need to get six shots out of ten on target to pass the test halfway through Lyons rifle gets jammed you squeeze the trigger nothing happens and then it's panic it was a double feed so two rounds trying to go into the chamber at same time you got to get you magazine off and just shake the hell out of your rifle I just couldn't clear it in time all right past this piece okay good effort those that haven't all right there will be opportunity to make amends okay lion do not make the same mistake again and I'm sure you never will lion will have to retake the test in a few days time [Music] but if he fails once more he'll be sent back in training now you take him away from the pressure he's all over it as soon as you put that pressure situation no the question mark arises and the stumbles you don't let the lads down as well like you started with everyone's here for one reason to be part of the Marines you want to be at the top of everything and you don't want to for them to be like are to show me fails 169 tree point 2 weeks away from becoming Royal Marines standing between them and their Green Berets for their final commando tests you lean against that wall ok press-ups 50 go recruit Harris has just joined 169 he's been at limp stone for over two years after suffering a series of injuries everyone says to me I couldn't stay here that long how'd you stay at this lon get out quite a lot it's just disbelief shake out I've had many ups and downs but this is what I want to do so I won't go until they just tell me like no with training only supposed to last eight months he's currently one of the longest-serving recruits on different troops since he first joined what does he leave with some 3-1 Honda syndrome sergeant so you're less than three one two compartment syndrome you went into a 150 okay I actually picked up a blood infection and they've got been hostile for two half weeks okay anything stupid tripping over when downstairs and if it happens happens to me really one time like fell off Brighton Pier I was dressed as Superman had a few too many drinks I thought I could fly Superman didn't fly ended up sort of down from 150 UN in tu-154 odd you know you've seen her in the blocking near one five four he said he got a walk down one step he's done his neck in a matchstick if all over it broken arms at times I was in hospital with my boy from the age of three okay so one five or was he last trick was it and he's doing who every day he said I'm going in the Royal Marines I went pardon he said I'm going in the robbery tonight your joke and he said no he said mum this is for me he got picked signed up and that was it gone [Music] it's the morning of the toys on assault course for Harris and the rest of 169 have all of them that's my least-favorite tests I'm Oliver I'd say endurance time and Tarzan's quite explosive [Music] it's a aerial assault course to be completed in 13 minutes it's the one where your lungs are most likely to fall out of your mouth at the end it catches people out Harris has yet to complete a full run of the course in training staff a little instant I just slipped off and hit my head and ended up knocking myself out since still in that attitude or that there's an obstacle on get over it in Afghanistan it's walk down the other ways and streaks would have been lethal you know they took casualties in it the IDS where they were lay that that's where they work so what do you do where you get up high listen now you need to get a move on okay this is far too slow working out stop just swinging all over the place watch your barns it's messed up to make your feet are for myself don't you see it on the last as soon as they get an obstacle wrong that they're in flat mode they're they're hating life right there and then because they know they've got very little time to play with it's coming push the left foot forward show a bit of grit and determination now let's go keep going keep going come on you know what you're doing straight into it come on before he must attempt to rerun of the test lion and the rest of his room so Paris just been the thing ridden throughout training in it like keys he's made it hard for himself you know I saw him in it really are degrees I'm stop blowing our you just wrapped I don't think he's necessarily a physical thing I think it's one here it gives it one it and then and then victories I've it's quite easy for a stigma to sort of be around a recruit that's been here for a long time you know inevitably and not always fairly questions are gonna be asked to the lad sometimes you can find yourself in a position as a recruit that is a little bit more comfortable than other positions are you gonna milk that you're getting paid you know sometimes they're just quite enjoy that pay it's time for Harris to attempt his rerun this is it and I wasn't it okay whatever happened earlier put it behind you put it to bed don't let your waist slip off that I can only imagine he's been left behind the first few times but I mean I considered sort of seriously naka blows confidence Harris hits a mental wall on akhtar zone it will come up that stop short Overmind far an active IAM off you wanna training so much yeah I it is black and white know you've gone where's now there is that sort of culture Nell being brought into the wrong range of all right let's push this bloke let's help this blow this world with this bloke but there is definitely a point when we it's our duty of care to say to someone this is not the curfew [Music] I instantly chilled out all day cover-up Samaras he's pretty [ __ ] good weekend to be honest major a little bit wait stop me and I wasn't a funny mood all weekend with a wife no in its don't talk you caught up you're not talking for a weekend yeah well then yeah she weren't happy with that turn of events she nah no I'll figure out the hose out one six nine have to pass for commando test to get their green berets and today it's the nine mile speed March no I'm a speed March is run on local roads as a squad with 21 pound plus a weapon [Music] we're running the flat for the downhill your pill so I break it down into walk you have to work hard and earn new face Lian Harris and the rest of 169 have just 90 minutes to complete the run the pain is hard to describe it it's almost like if used to sit on your hands for a long period of time you start you in that and that numbness feeling and then cars get really tight and if you continue on and get pins and needles and your toes and your feet [Music] with less than a mile to go another recruit Hughes begins to struggle okay no he's whitening stay with it you stay with it breaking into quick time but [ __ ] may lose its okay mine goes down in the middle of an operation you've still got a carry on you can't just stop the whole operation that's just the military of doing it let me go to sleep whatever you do right they're not going to sleep you do think like oh that could that could have been me stand up if using that position you know lightly into the world [Music] everyone except recruit Hughes past the speed March moving 169 troop one step closer to their green berets what I've asked and there's any carry kids you had white it was literally that I had it he was around like this and his legs were like this RG [ __ ] granny flex soda just under eaves or something to you Hughes has returned from the Medical Center after being past fit to rejoin the troop what were your activities over the weekend I was buted madura maid my good friend I do graduation boy I said him I inject on how long did it take you to drive own to stop two hours and over four hours I suspect in a vehicle there and back over a period of slightly more than 24 hours you prepared yourself with tea and coffee do you think on your hearts of Arts was the best preparation that you could have done no sir okay I believe that's the right answer you're going to go through the rest of your career having to balance family life and your military life and unfortunately it is a nightmare so start preparing yourself as quick as possible work on rehydration and getting some substance in your body so okay so where do you go he's put himself in a dog [ __ ] position these are hard balancing act a lot of life's don't get it right a lot don't I struggle at times to get it right if you ask my wife that I came back from Afghanistan thought I'd a nice bitter call it to Tom background via phone calls back on ship again the wharf is absolutely devastated you know we're not here to [ __ ] you about but the reality join the Marines is you gotta be ready to move or short notice your family unfortunately I gonna have to sports suck it in why did you go on I'm a well they got me bubby gives a [ __ ] on my three kids oh no I'm Susie I'm not on that's weekend like the other recruits who failed tests Hughes will have a rerun before he does all of 169 trooper must complete the fourth and final test Molly a 30-mile speed march across Dartmoor carrying their rifle and at least 32 pounds of kids hey we seen this blister the biggest one everyone dreads it's a certain Miley but you hear people breaking their legs on it and getting fractured hips and stuff like that if you fail to yeah you're out the tube so that's that uh still want to pressure is [Music] having all failed one test lion Harris and Hughes will need to get through the 30-mile er before facing their reruns this is the one that proves that you thought the commander's spirit determination that corporal Godfrey said that's not gonna [ __ ] encourage you on this this is your individual effort your final contests [ __ ] you want to grill it [ __ ] nice go get it for everybody in eight hours time three two one and away you go [Music] you said feta master someon your life colors is it's not that much more than a marathon is it really and then you take someone else across that one and then like our so you use paths and stuffs like no it doesn't matter that there's a hilltop there or we go around the river we use the bridge just like there are some tactical will go through the river it's got a reputation for like being boring if that makes sense because it is literally 30 miles across Dartmoor and despite the fact that what civvies think about that more Dartmoor as a [ __ ] shell [Music] Chaffin is but really bad like ball chafing is a is a killer they're pretty tender anyway so you don't get the money ready than what they need to be [Music] you think about stupid stuff I thought about my missus knowing that I was gonna get to see her eventually I always recited Nando's menu like Nando's I started the appetizers but mixed olives got nuts hummus at 295 pretty good and get peri predict without as well we've got the sauces so we've got lemon herb mango online medium hot extra hot got meal platter full platter which is a whole chicken for size and refill this is like that last leg what is waiting at the end of it your green beret that is not one of the teams that is one of yours [Music] the recruits are almost at the end the successful ones will be presented with their Green Berets by the head of Lim Stern Colonel Kassabian across that bridge everybody will [ __ ] nails nobody will show any emotion not like they're [ __ ] dangling it's a piece of piss look right you've gone through nine months what I'm fellows good effort and you get that bridge see everyone clapping you in and you're like these last few steps and then suddenly you've done it and you've got all your trading team coming at you shaking your hand strong effort that's right good effort all round very good brother my brother it was so hard but I promise you know I'll never forget that for you no one was really liked this morning that much because I think everyone was just in shock because it's so immediate because they literally finish the 30-mile in ten minutes later they'd given their Green Beret there's a whole mishmash of emotions which are flying round they have achieved all that they need to do to be war Marines commandos so handing him over at that exact point is done first and foremost because they've deserved it and why should we deny them that moment any longer the 30-mile er marks the end of nearly eight months of some of the most intense military training in the world the recruits who have survived and earned their Green Berets are now short of their final pass out Royal Marines good effort good effort alright well congratulations you've done something in your life that you worked you've worked so hard to get by the Sirians what I'm a nice fit like [ __ ] now I've actually done this they've given me a green lid I flew the best the best thing in the world let your actions speak louder than your words and don't feel the need to go off about what you do just do it and let that be the illustration of what it is for you to be a raw Marines commando the recruits who still need to do reruns have to stand apart unless they pass they won't get there Green Berets as a part of 169 troop mix the motions as bit gut-wrenching not be able to get it like it's touching distance it was [ __ ] watching everyone else you know get the world on speech yeah you've passed and then there's four of us just the back obviously everyone's that hyped up yeah they've passed they're in and then I've got away like two days to find out that was there that's pretty [ __ ] what I'm fellows good effort [Music] it's like a skin graft I know Khmer special it's the day of the reruns for the recruits who failed to test got a smashing today walk getting their lion faces a three-hour wait before he can repeat the endurance course wasn't [ __ ] pass or fail green Ledo go stay strong stay with it having collapsed on his first attempt at the nine mile speed march this time Hughes has to do it on his own come on keep it going if you have to fight through this pain now you have to fight for it like it means absolutely everything to you we know what you can unlock as determination on this one at least or at least a lot of digging outlined in today Hughes's 600 meters from the end of the speed March we've got enough time to do this why won't start doing damage this one I think worse I'm gonna do him damage he's gone he's gone he's gone it's gone we're doing it Bob Bob Bob they're not doing damage if out I need to do this what if he fails he won't get his green beret and pass out in time for his wedding 67 I had exactly the same stoppage on the range again I've managed to get almost more rounds off before it happened I got seven so that's enough to pass [Music] Aris now faces his third and final tours and rerun [Music] if he fails now he will be sent back in training and his time as one of limp stones longest-serving recruits will be further extended I've been in for so long Bosley going Arliss will have wasted two to eight years of my life he has 13 minutes to complete the course nothing now I thought to myself and they've gone across miles of [Music] [Music] [Music] so come a little moment on top of the on the chasm take a deep breath I think I took a bit too long on that I stole the whoring myself up happen to mess it up once again gave the 4ek then to make it hard for myself into a full 'very game there we go soon as I got back up and over the chasm i xl oh that's it 169 treat after today they'll get to spend a few days with their families before being sent off to unit will now commence with the award ceremony with the individual presentation of the green berries drafted to 4-5 commando marine lion you know everyone's really proud about it my missus she was a bit like you know finally we did get to be about together luckily we never had to try and rearrange halls and churches and stuff like that that was good the tours are the so course specialist who loved it so much that he insisted on doing it three times well done good effort roughly 2 for 3 commando Marine Harris I am really really worried about the danger of the job he's in now but someone's got to do it and he's brave enough to do it so I just keep my fingers crossed but when I saw him you know get in there I was so proud of him I can't wait to finally get to where I wanted to go to it's great to get out of it start living my life now why did you get your lids no one really cares how you've done it drafted 42 commando Marines Stevens [Applause] Kings out there no I'll be relieved now you don't you don't get emotional about it so we're not that sort of blows you pass them out you move them all we've got these lives through lots of sea drinks you grow fonder no I don't oh not in the slightest farro fleet they will go on to do decent things these doesn't cause some of them my opinion will go on to do some great things one six nine three the king squad there's some clear characters out there and I might be little bit prior to touch to up I don't think would phone this is quite the
